I keep getting Altered Carbon by Richard K. Morgan and The Expanse books by James S. A. Corey mixed up.
I haven't read either books, the mix up is because I ordered both as a christmas present for my boyfriend. I ordered Altered Carbon books too late, but it's still a gift.
I keep saying The Expanse books have shipped. They are on our shelf. It's the other sci-fi trilogy with a tv series that shipped.
Also I only just noticed that Richard K. Morgan also wrote The Steel Remains.

I don’t know how I never noticed this before, but last night it hit me how many similarities Amos Burton from The Expanse has with Konstantine Bothari from the Vorkosigan Saga.
It starts with their shared childhood and background, and extends to the way they are written as latching onto somebody else to serve as their moral compass and create their identity. The authors of The Expanse have to have taken inspiration from Bothari when generating the character.
Bothari followed Cordelia Vorkosigan, and her son Miles, because she made him a better man than he could ever have been on his own. Amos follows Naomi Nagata, and later James Holden and the whole Rocinante crew, for the same reasons. Because by letting them guide him he can act as a better man than he would be on his own.
Where the characters diverge is where they try to go themselves: Bothari wants nothing more than to be Cordelia’s “dog”, so he stays as he is for his entire life and is even buried at the foot of her grave when he dies. Amos instead decides that he wants to become better himself, and so makes an effort to form his own judgements and build an internal moral code.
In a way, Amos is who Bothari could have become if he a group of people supporting him (The entire Roci family) instead of just one person holding him together.
There’s so much here to discuss that I never realized until last night.

Book Review #103 of 2022--
The Sins of Our Fathers by James S.A. Corey. Rating: 3 stars.
Rating: 3 stars.
I’ve completed The Expanse series! This was my first real foray into hard sci-fi and I enjoyed the series as a whole. Almost every single thing I read from the series was rated 4 stars or above. The only exception being the last book and the final novella. I think part of that is understandable. I think wrapping up such a massive series can be hard.
As far as this novella goes, I have to say that I didn’t enjoy following this main character around following the events of the last book. I’ve always disliked this character so I think seeing them all grown up doesn’t do a lot for me emotionally. I think they’ve grown in the years since we last checked in with them. But they’re still blaming their past and their relationship for their parents for their current actions. Which feels like a gap in logic to me. Or an excuse. I did find myself agreeing with them at times which makes me question a lot about myself, but does point toward them growing up and actually acting like an adult finally. At least some of the time.
I do enjoy the fact that we got to see one of the civilizations that got cut off and we got to see them trying to make life work and work toward having any kind of future at all. It’s bleak, but that’s to be expected. I like that they’re having to confront a lot of problems head on.
Overall, I don't think this is the finale to the series that I wanted, but it was still a good read.

He'd outgrown his childhood home, but in the back of his mind, the unexamined assumption was that it would still be there. Changed, maybe. Grown a little older. But there.

I’ve been collecting this series, and am ready to jump in. My friends have been raving about ‘The Expanse‘ and it has also been touted as one of the best television adaptations too. Big shoes to fill!
