But all of the stories about the devil making a deal and then cheating missed the point. The real horror was that once the bargain was struck, the devil didn’t cheat. He gave you exactly and explicitly all that had been promised. And the price was your soul.

Everyone Needs to Read The Expanse
I am screaming at how many people are sleeping on The Expanse books! It’s one of my favorite sci-fi series of all time especially the final three books. Persepolis Rising, Tiamat’s Wrath, and Leviathan Falls are masterclass examples of existential sci-fi. The final 3 books alone have:
1. Accurate depictions of PTSD and how it effects people differently.
2. Some of the best cosmic horror I have ever read. It nails the fact that the center of cosmic horror is not only horror of the unknown but its effect on humanity
3. This one is going to sound weird but, the entire main cast of characters are in their 60′s. While it sounds boring it allows for more through exploration of the fear of death, coping with the loss of loved ones, the joy of watching a new generation grow, the fear of repeating the mistakes your predecessors did, what happens after the day is saved, and the cycle of violence that power generates.
4. Just the lore and story telling itself is amazing. Using the terms: “The Dreamer,” “The Romans,” and “The Goths” to explain the ring space and the gates helped add to the almost mythical nature of what killed the gate builders.
5. The characters!!! Oh my g-d I adore the character writing in the final 3 books. In the first 2/3rd of the series James S.A Corey had an issue with writing almost more like the writing of a journal which lead to the characters sometimes falling flat. However in the final 3 books he really comes into himself as a writer and fleshes out all of the characters he neglected in the first 6 books while introducing some of the best characters yet.
6. I said it in number 3 but it deserves to be said again: the trauma and cycle of grieving the books explore from the death of a loved one/ watching a loved one die of a terminal illness is some of the best I have ever read. As someone who watched a parent die from Alzheimer’s; I can say that the way James S.A. Corey explores how you grieve for someone who isn’t even dead yet, and the lashing out that occurs from the feeling is amazingly well written. It’s accurate to the feelings I myself experienced and felt like it was written by someone who watched a loved one of their own die from a terminal illness.
Anyway!!! Go read The Expanse books I am begging you. If you like sci-fi, in depth world building, or mystery I’m going to recommend this series to you.
Thanks for coming to my TedTalk

“That’s the thing. The people you’re controlling don’t have a voice in how you control them. As long as everyone’s on the same page, things may be great, but when there’s a question, you win. Right?”
“There has to be a way to come to a final decision.”
“No, there doesn’t. Every time someone starts talking about final anythings in politics, that means the atrocities are warming up. Humanity has done amazing things by just muddling through, arguing and complaining and fighting and negotiating. It’s messy and undignified, but it’s when we’re at our best, because everyone gets to have a voice in it. Even if everyone else is trying to shout it down. Whenever there’s just one voice that matters, something terrible comes out of it.”
“And yet, I understand from Ms. Fisk that the Transport Union was condemning whole colonies that didn’t follow its rule.”
“Right?” Holden said. “And so I disobeyed that order and I quit working for them. I was all set to go retire in Sol system. Can you do that?”
“Can I do what?”
“If you are given an immoral order, can you resign and walk away? Because everything I’ve seen about how you’re running this place tells me that isn’t an option for you.”
Singh crossed his arms. He had the sense that the interrogation was getting away from him.
“The high consul is a very wise, very thoughtful man,” he said. “I have perfect faith that—”
“No. Stop. ‘Perfect faith’ really tells me everything I need to know,” Holden said. “You think this is a gentle, bloodless conquest, don’t you?”
“It is, to the degree that you allow it to be.”
“I was there for the war Duarte started to cover his tracks. I was there for the starving years afterward. Your empire’s hands look a lot cleaner when you get to dictate where history begins and what parts of it don’t count.”

I'd love to hear your recommendations for no 35 and 71, please 😀
35. a book featuring the found family trope
The Expanse novels by James S.A. Corey, starting with Leviathan Wakes. The main crew start out as coworkers who're thrown together basically by work roster, and they come to really know each other, have each others' back, tell each other off when needed, make each other better, all that good family stuff.
71. your favourite LGBTQ+ fiction
Pretty much always whichever one I've last finished. ;-P But I appear to be a sucker for what I've been jokingly calling the "sad historical gay men" subgenre, which so far includes:
the complete works of Natasha Pulley
A Marvellous Light by Freya Marske
A Strange and Stubborn Endurance by Foz Meadows
Spellbound by Allie Therin
And is probably eventually going to include Witchmark by C.L. Polk, Silver in the Wood by Emily Tesh, A Taste of Gold and Iron by Alexandra Rowland, and at least one book by K.J. Charles. Are these the best queer books out there? The least problematic? Are they my catnip anyway?
Thanks for asking!

Book Review #103 of 2022--
Tumblr media
The Sins of Our Fathers by James S.A. Corey. Rating: 3 stars.
Rating: 3 stars.
I’ve completed The Expanse series! This was my first real foray into hard sci-fi and I enjoyed the series as a whole. Almost every single thing I read from the series was rated 4 stars or above. The only exception being the last book and the final novella. I think part of that is understandable. I think wrapping up such a massive series can be hard.
As far as this novella goes, I have to say that I didn’t enjoy following this main character around following the events of the last book. I’ve always disliked this character so I think seeing them all grown up doesn’t do a lot for me emotionally. I think they’ve grown in the years since we last checked in with them. But they’re still blaming their past and their relationship for their parents for their current actions. Which feels like a gap in logic to me. Or an excuse. I did find myself agreeing with them at times which makes me question a lot about myself, but does point toward them growing up and actually acting like an adult finally. At least some of the time.
I do enjoy the fact that we got to see one of the civilizations that got cut off and we got to see them trying to make life work and work toward having any kind of future at all. It’s bleak, but that’s to be expected. I like that they’re having to confront a lot of problems head on.
Overall, I don't think this is the finale to the series that I wanted, but it was still a good read.
