Robert Mitchum and Gregory Peck in Cape Fear (J. Lee Thompson, 1962)
Cast: Gregory Peck, Robert Mitchum, Polly Bergen, Lori Martin, Martin Balsam, Jack Kruschen, Telly Savalas, Barrie Chase. Screenplay: James R. Webb, based on a novel by John D. MacDonald. Cinematography: Sam Leavit. Art direction: Robert F. Boyle, Alexander Golitzen. Film editing: George Tomasini. Music: Bernard Herrmann.
When I watched Martin Scorsese's 1991 remake of Cape Fear, I hadn't seen J. Lee Thompson's 1962 version. Now that I've seen it, I don't know why Scorsese wanted to remake it. The earlier version, with a screenplay by James R. Webb from the same John D. MacDonald novel, The Executioners, is a tense, well-cast movie with a Bernard Herrmann score that Scorsese had Elmer Bernstein adapt for his version. What Scorsese's screenwriter, Wesley Strick, did was to add more complications to the characters in the later film. Gregory Peck's Sam Bowden is a straight arrow compared to Nick Nolte's, and both Jessica Lange and Juliette Lange bring greater depth to Bowden's wife and daughter than Polly Bergen and Lori Martin do in the earlier version. But given that the movie in both cases is essentially a suspense thriller, I'm not sure that this is necessarily an improvement: The earlier film's emphasis on the innocence of the Bowdens makes the threat posed by Robert Mitchum's Max Cady more intense than that posed by Robert De Niro to the more morally compromised Bowdens of the Scorsese film. So in short, I have to say I prefer the earlier version. No one is saying that Lee Thompson was a better director, or that the screenwriter and actors in his version are superior to Scorsese and company. But if the intent of the film is to shock and to have the audience on the edge of their seats, then the earlier version does the job better. I have never been a fan of Gregory Peck, who is an actor who never surprises me with a line delivery or facial expression, as Nolte has been known to do, and Bergen and Martin are decidedly inferior to Lange and Lewis as actors, but they make better victims, which is all that the movie asks of them. The one performance that seems to me superior is Mitchum's, perhaps because there is a brutishness in his very persona that is lacking in De Niro, who has many film personae. I think De Niro overacts feverishly to make his Cady menacing, at the expense of becoming ludicrous. Mitchum, on the other hand, has only to narrow his sleepy eyes to suggest the deep psychosis of his character, and his menacing of Bergen, in which Mitchum apparently improvised the device of breaking an egg and smearing her with it, is truly chilling. Although Lee Thompson's final sequence, in which Cady sneaks up on the Bowdens' houseboat, is somewhat botched -- we're never quite sure where Cady, Bowden, and the detective assigned to guard them are at any given moment -- I still think it's preferable to the special-effects-laden storm that destroys the houseboat in Scorsese's film. Lee Thompson, whose only other really memorable film was The Guns of Navarone (1961), was never the filmmaker that Scorsese is, but here I think he does a better job of keeping the audience on edge.

Oh, Lucy's so excited to be recognised. The 'named specifically' bit. And I do wonder where from the lockers to the briefing room that Tim decided against asking Lucy to be his aide. It's obviously something he thought about enough to decide against because he didn't want it to hurt her career or how others viewed her. Boy does some quick introspection while walking. But he also looked at her. He was still contemplating it up to that point and then chose whoever was sat behind her (sorry Webb) as a deflection. And Lucy just trying to hide her disappointment and distract herself with whatever's at hand. My poor girl.
Did Lucy ever get a nickname from Nyla? I suppose Not Nolan might count, but that just applied to anyone who was, at the time, Not Nolan.
Oh Aaron, you actual sweetie. I am so attached to him already.
Harper is such a stirrer and I love it. Unofficial co-captain of Chenford. First mate, maybe? Or maybe more just a passing ship. I'm not sure how much she ships it as opposed to just being blatantly aware there are absolute feelings going on there between them.
Lucy you little shit ily. Poor Webb. Didn't stand a chance, that man. Really it's on him for not realising that Tim, of all people, does not do cat personalities.
How did we never get a Tim and Lucy get roped into babysitting. Not even as a couple, just somehow they both get roped into it. Maybe Angela asks them both and forgets she asked both, and they turn up and just decide to hang out. Think of the possibilities, people! Please tell me there's a fic like that!
Oh Nyla. No. Honey. No. James is clearly the better option anyway, but ouch.
Wesley, no. Honey, no. Just tell your badass wife and her badass found family pls.
Lucy and Tim, stop work flirting so hard right in front of everyone. Good lord. (never stop) Jesus those eyes are doing a lot of work, Tim. People are watching.
And more flirting. Good lord these two just cannot handle all the feelings they have no idea what to do with or what to name, and it just turns into this glorious work flirt.

Character Actor
William Boyett (January 3, 1927 – December 29, 2004) Actor best known for his work as the low-key but authoritative Sergeant William 'Mac' MacDonald on the police drama Adam-12.
In 1954, Boyett played respected settler Jim Hardwicke in the Death Valley Days episode "11,000 Miners Can't Be Wrong". It details the competition between Columbia and Sacramento to be the capital of California. When he informs the sheriff (Glenn Strange) that he had killed a man in self-defense, Hardwicke is forced to stand trial. Political influence coerces the jury to find Hardwicke guilty. His lawyer, Ed Barrett (Gordon Barnes), develops a bizarre scheme to free his client from the hangman's noose. Barrett steals from a safe in the local bank a petition with 11,000 signatures of persons who want Columbia to be the capital, rewrites the first page to call for a pardon for Hardwicke, and appeals to the governor, who is impressed that so many signed. The governor orders Hardwicke's release, but Columbia loses out to Sacramento
Boyett was often cast as a law-enforcement officer, and portrayed that role in such diverse series as Gang Busters, The Man Behind the Badge, I Led 3 Lives, M Squad, The Detectives, Sea Hunt, Batman and Gomer Pyle, U.S.M.C.
Jack Webb, the executive producer of Adam-12 selected Boyett for the role of Sgt. "Mac" MacDonald after several performances (such as playing Sgt. Sam Hunter) in both iterations of Webb's Dragnet. (Boyett can also be seen uncredited as a Baliff in the 1954 movie version.) Boyett stayed with the series for its entire 1968–1975 run. Boyett also supported Broderick Crawford in 64 episodes of Highway Patrol as either Officer Johnson or Sergeant Williams.
He also made eight guest appearances on CBS's Perry Mason throughout the series' nine-year run, mostly in law-enforcement roles. In 1962, he played slain police officer Otto Norden in "The Case of the Hateful Hero". The defendant was his rookie partner James Anderson played by Richard Davalos, cousin of series regular Lt. Anderson played by Wesley Lau. He also played a corporate executive, Buck Osborn, in the 1961 episode, "The Case of the Renegade Refugee". In the 1961 My Three Sons episode, "Fire Watch", he was a forest ranger.
Boyett appeared in a number of television programs, such as Official Detective, Navy Log, Laramie, Tales of the Texas Rangers, I Spy, The Man from U.N.C.L.E. (uncredited; "The Secret Sceptre Affair" from 1965), The Andy Griffith Show, Family Affair, Fantasy Island, The Love Boat, The Rockford Files, Star Trek: The Next Generation, The A-Team, Knight Rider, Rescue 8, Ripcord, Murphy Brown and Night Court. He also appeared in numerous episodes of Emergency! as Chief McConnikee of Los Angeles County Fire Department's Battalion 14. (Wikipedia)

ANGEL: You hired a vampire. What do you think he is going to do with the rings when he finds it, huh? Hand it over to you?
SPIKE: Good Lord, why didn’t I think of...? Oh, half a mo, I did. I hired a guy who doesn’t care about the ring, or anything else on God’s green earth except taking blokes apart one piece at a time. It’s called addiction, Angel. We all have them. I believe yours is named ‘Slutty the vampire slayer.’
(The music ends and Spike breathes a sigh of relief)
Thank you. Speaking of little Buff, I ran into her recently. Your name didn’t come up. Although she has been awful busy jumping the bones of the very first lunk-head who came along. Good-looking fellow. Used her shamelessly. She is *cute* when she is hurtin’, isn’t she?
ANGEL: I think she’s cuter when she’s kicking your ass.

Robert De Niro in Cape Fear (Martin Scorsese, 1991)
Cast: Robert De Niro, Nick Nolte, Jessica Lange, Juliette Lewis, Joe Don Baker, Robert Mitchum, Gregory Peck, Martin Balsam, Ileana Douglas, Fred Thompson. Screenplay: Wesley Strick, based on a novel by John D. MacDonald and a screenplay by James R. Webb. Cinematography: Freddie Francis. Production design: Henry Bumstead. Film editing: Thelma Schoonmaker. Music Elmer Bernstein.
Steven Spielberg originally planned to film this remake of J. Lee Thompson's 1962 Cape Fear, but when he decided it wasn't exactly his thing, he traded with Scorsese for the rights to make Schindler's List (1993). (Which in turn makes me wonder what Scorsese's version of List would have been like: Would Robert De Niro have played Oskar Schindler or Amon Goeth?) I'm not sure why anyone wanted to remake this specific material (James R. Webb's screenplay based on a novel by John D. MacDonald, revised here by Wesley Strick) since the premise of the film, an ex-con takes revenge on the man he blames for sending him to prison, is such a staple of melodrama. The only real twist to the premise is that the object of revenge is not the prosecuting attorney or the judge who sentenced Max Cady (De Niro), but his own defense attorney, Sam Bowden (Nick Nolte). Cady, while studying law in prison, learned that Bowden had suppressed evidence that he might have used at least to get a lighter sentence for Cady. (Bowden had been revolted by his client's rape and battery of a young woman.) Scorsese's version of the story is certainly watchable -- Scorsese has yet to make a film that isn't -- but it's just a melodrama ratcheted up to the heights. Scorsese has Freddie Francis film some dialogue scenes in closeups, with the camera slowly pulling in even closer on faces as the characters talk. But the one time Scorsese decides not to do this is actually the best scene in the film: when Cady talks with Bowden's daughter, Danielle (Juliette Lewis) on the stage of her high school's theater. Here the distance the camera keeps from them at first allows for a tension that grows in intensity, until finally the camera draws nearer. De Niro pulls out all the stops in a performance that earned him an Oscar nomination, but at times verges on self-parody, especially the Southern (?) accent that he adopts (and occasionally drops). Nolte and Jessica Lange (as Leigh, Bowden's wife) are fine, as one expects them to be, but the best performance is given by Lewis, who was 18 and makes Danielle a credible 15-year-old, her rebellious streak reinforcing her attraction to Cady at the same time that she knows to be wary of him. It earned her an Oscar nomination and launched her career. Robert Mitchum and Gregory Peck, the Cady and Bowden of the first film, appear in cameo roles -- a gimmick, and not an especially effective one.
