Triadobatrachus massinoti

Time and Place: Approximately 251–250 million years ago, in the late Induan to early Olenekian of the Early Triassic.

Triadobatrachus is only known from the Sakamena Formation in Northern Madagascar.

Physical Description: Triadobatrachus superficially resembles modern frogs, it was only around 10 cm long, had a broad head and a very reduced tail. Its skeleton had many features associated only with frogs among amphibians, including a very frog-like skull with big eyes and their characteristically elongated hips. Soft tissues preserved around the fossil even show that it had the wide, round body of frogs too. However, the skeleton of Triadobatrachus differed from living frogs in a few major ways. It had much more vertebrae than living frogs, 26 compared to the maximum 4–9 of frogs alive today, giving it a much longer body, and these vertebrae had ribs, unlike living frogs. Its legs were shorter and more squat, especially its back legs, which were hardly any longer than its front ones, making Triadobatrachus incapable of hopping despite its derived hips. Even the stumpy tail was still more prominent than in living frogs, and may have even retained some degree of mobility. To sum it up, Triadobatrachus more or less looked like a stretched out frog with short legs. Think of a horned toad lizard but with more of the toad part and less horned.

Diet: Like other frogs, Triadobatrachus was probably carnivorous, likely feeding on invertebrates like insects and other arthropods, molluscs, worms, and perhaps even any small vertebrates it could fit in its mouth.

Behavior: One of the most standout features of Triadobatrachus is that it couldn’t have hopped like modern frogs. Instead, Triadobatrachus would have walked around on land more like a salamander, although it is unknown just how much time it would have spent on land in the first place anyway. It was clearly amphibious, and it probably swam by kicking its back legs like frogs, unlike the undulation of newts and salamanders. It would have spawned like living amphibians too, laying shell-less eggs in water that hatched into tadpoles and underwent metamorphosis just like modern frogs. Otherwise, its behaviour is a mystery. We don’t even know if it would have croaked or not.

Ecosystem: Not much is directly known about the ecosystem Triadobatrachus inhabited, as the only known fossil had been washed out to sea along the coast. The intact body at least implies the body wasn’t transported far, so Triadobatrachus probably lived in coastal floodplain rivers and swamps. Various other temnospondyl amphibians are known from the area, including Edingeralla, Deltacephalus, Mahavisaurus, Wantzsosaurus and Tertremoides. Despite being amphibians, many of these temnospondyls were likely euryhaline, meaning they could tolerate salt water and inhabited the coastline, something only a few living amphibians are even remotely capable of standing. The peculiar aquatic reptile Hovasaurus lived along the coasts, although it’s unknown if it ever crossed paths with the freshwater frogs, and terrestrial procolophonid parareptiles were also present. Plant remains suggest the environment was tropical and semi-arid with a monsoonal climate that supported conifer forests along with seed ferns, horsetails and clubmosses.

Other: Triadobatrachus is one of the only known stem-frogs, along with the polish Czatkobatrachus, and is certainly the oldest. The early evolution of Lissamphibia (all living amphibians) is poorly understood, particularly whether their ancestry lies in the temnospondyls or some other “amphibians”. Triadobatrachus doesn’t solve this debate, although it does show similarities to the Permian amphibamiforms like Gerobatrachus, supporting the temnospondyl affinity for batrachians (the frogs and salamanders) amongst dissorophoids.

Before they were considered to be temnospondyls, lissamphibians were often thought to be lepospondyls, a probably paraphyletic or even polyphyletic (i.e. unnatural) collection of “amphibians” on the tetrapod tree more derived than temnospondyls (some may even be honest to goodness amniotes!). This picture is complicated by caecilians, which at one point were suggested to be lepospondyls while batrachians were temnospondyls, making Lissamphibia polyphyletic! The story got even stranger after a little Triassic amphibian, Chinlestegophis, was discovered in 2017 and was considered to be a stem-caecilian. Chinlestegophis pulled caecilians back into temnospondyls with the other lissamphibians, but at almost opposite ends of the temnospondyl tree—batrachians in amphibamiforms and caecilians in with the stereospondyls related to the giant metoposaurs! So lissamphibians may all be temnospondyls...but also polyphyletic, unless nearly all of Temnospondyli is classed as lissamphibians and becomes part of the crown group. This would also mean our small modern amphibians both independently miniaturised from the much larger, classic predatory amphibians of the Palaeozoic and Triassic. What a concept.

Regardless of temnospondyl taxonomic troubles, Triadobatrachus is a perfect transitional form from more generalised amphibians to the highly specialised anatomy of frogs. Particularly, it shows that some of their unique anatomical adaptations evolved before they were able to hop, and may have functioned for other activities like swimming. The almost complete preservation of a skeleton as delicate as one of a small amphibian is a remarkable find, let alone one that represents a perfect transitional form for a group of animals whose evolutionary history is shrouded in mystery, and makes Triadobatrachus a fantastic find, no matter how unassuming it may be.

The Entry Barrier

Warhammer Community

A year ago, I purchased Game’s Workshop Adeptus Titanicus game. It looked cool (and is), and I thought it would be a good way to dip my toe into the Warhammer 40k universe. While the game is wonderful, the problem I was faced with was figuring out what factions I would paint my Titans. The game provided some very generic background, but not enough to really make a good call. I went to several websites and was immediately overwhelmed. There were novels, a LOT of them. I asked some fans where to start and got, and I’m not exaggerating here, no less than 25 suggested starting places in the franchise. Finally, I just picked some color schemes from some factions that looked cool and went with those. I no longer care about the factions, or if their Titans would ever fight each other. I went for what colors looked cool.

I had a variant of an entry barrier issue with Flames of War. I bought the rules, but that wasn’t enough. I had to purchase books for the forces I wanted to field. Then came the dice, the artillery templates, etc. I purchased the minis, painted them, and then found out they had moved to a new version of the rules. Now I needed a new rules book, decks of cards…ugh!

Wargames Illustrated

Jason Weiser, who masterfully contributes to this blog, recommended Battlegroup rules to me. I got the rules book (and love the system), but I also now needed a campaign book to actually play. This was a small entry barrier – but it was there. I was surprised that Plastic Soldiers didn’t offer a bundle – the rules and a campaign book sold together. I would have gladly spent the money to get everything I needed in one shot.

As a longtime writer for BattleTech I often see people who ask, “Where do I get started?” It’s not easy. First, fans don’t necessarily agree with what novels you should start with. Others argue about eras, which determine what rule sets or books you might need. Yes, there is a beginner’s boxed set, but that is set at a certain tech level which might not be where the players want to jump in. All of this makes it difficult for new players to join in on the fun because the entry barrier can be so daunting.

Dungeons and Dragons cracked this nut a long time ago. As a player, you need the Players Handbook. If you are running the game – you need the Dungeon Masters Guide and Monster Manual. Everything else is a voluntary add-on. I played D&D for years without knowing what the Forgotten Realms were, nor did I care. The low entry barrier for D&D has been a massive part of its success. It has allowed generations of players to hop in, regardless of the current version, and start playing.

Dicebreaker

Oddly, many companies seem to ignore this relatively simple concept. What game companies that have product lines need to do is get better at producing materials to lower the entry barrier for new players. A primer to the game is a good starting point – but it isn’t enough. Players want to know what components, at the bare minimum, are needed to play. Companies should bundle these components as a package that players can purchase. Boxed sets for entry can be a great starting point, but new players come in with no background, and most boxed sets lack the depth needed for many. They don’t know the flavors and flair of various factions.

When you are dealing with long-standing and large intellectual properties, like Warhammer 40k and BattleTech, you need to provide lists of novels and sourcebooks that are ‘essential’ vs. ‘great to read.’ Guidance needs to be provided for players to help them make a choice as to the time era they might want to explore. Players want to know, “if I pick this faction or this era, what do I need to consume.” The game companies need to make that easier – with some customized product bundling that can help new players assimilate quickly.

Nothing replaces meeting other players and asking them about the universe, but the game companies could do a lot to get players into the game quickly and easily. Gamers are more than willing to pay to jump into a game, as long as the money is well spent. Game companies have an obligation to make that as easy and simple as possible. It’s not about loading up web pages with lore. It is about providing good guidance and making it super-easy.

Danielle Bradbery’s sophomore album, I Don’t Believe We’ve Met, is officially out today. From the pre-released instant-grat tracks to the new songs, we absolutely cannot get enough of this album!

I’ve been imagining this moment since before we had a title or release date. I remember thinking Dec 1, 2017 was a lifetime away when we decided on it. And now we are here. It was so important for me to be as honest and vulnerable as I possibly could with this record because I owed it to you guys. I will never be able to express how grateful I am for your loyalty and patience - it’s because of you that I felt secure in taking my time to develop in to the adult, writer, and artist I wanted to be. I hope that shines through in these songs and I hope the wait was worth it. I love you all. The album began to come together when Bradbery wrote the song, “Potential,” with Emily Weisband. Weisband told Rolling Stone about getting to know Bradbery through her songwriting: “I've worked with Danielle for around four years, but I don't believe I really met her until we wrote that song.I think it was around then that she got more comfortable showing me and her team her meatier parts. And you could just tell that she was layered, that she had something to say... She wasn't trying to be something or please somebody. When we wrote, I felt like we were just two young girls saying what every other young girls wants to hear that nobody's saying."

Two of our favorite tracks from the album include the deep-cuts, “Human Diary” and “Messy.” “Human Diary” explores one of the hardest parts about breaking up—letting someone leave with the secrets you shared. Bradbery told Rolling Stone Country, “I was immediately brought to tears when I first heard ‘Human Diary. It’s such a relatable song, and I really wanted to expose what I was feeling that day. Everyone knows what it feels like to put their trust in someone and then feel robbed when they walk away, so I feel like this is a perfect taste of what I was going for on this album – pure honesty. Un saltamontes con forma de hoja, entre las especies más curiosas de 2016

Un saltamontes con forma de hoja que se mimetiza con el entorno, una araña cuyo cuerpo recuerda al sombrero de un mago, ciempiés que corren bajo el fondo del mar como si lo hiciesen en tierra firme, plantas que ‘sangran’ y orquídeas que parecen la cabeza de un diablo. Todas forman parte del Top Ten de nuevas especies descubiertas en 2016 elaborado, como cada año desde hace una década, por el International Institute of Species Exploration con la intención de concienciar sobre la importancia que tiene conocer y clasificar la biodiversidad.

Aunque sea difícil de apreciar a simple vista, entre las hojas de la foto se esconde un saltamontes, el Eulophophyllum kirki, una nueva especie descubierta el año pasado originaria de Borneo (Indonesia) y que cuenta con una extraordinaria capacidad de camuflaje.

Esta criatura forma parte, junto a otras nueve, de la lista de nuevas especies que cada año elabora el comité liderado por Quentin D. Wheeler, del International Institute of Species Exploration y que cuenta con la participación de Antonio García Valdecasas, investigador del Museo Nacional de Ciencias Naturales en Madrid.

La edición de este año se corresponde con el décimo aniversario desde que comenzó a elaborarse el listado que tradicionalmente se publica durante el 23 de mayo coincidiendo con el nacimiento de Carlos Linneo, botánico sueco del siglo XVIII y considerado el padre de la taxonomía moderna.

“En estos años se han descubierto y nombrado cerca de 200.000 especies. Lamentablemente hay que recordar la crisis de la biodiversidad en la que estamos inmersos y que hace que las especies se extingan sin darnos tiempo a descubrirlas”, lamenta Wheeler.

El Top Ten de criaturas descubiertas el pasado 2016 también incluye una araña con forma de sombrero de mago, plantas que ‘sangran’ y orquídeas cuya forma recuerda a la representación icónica del demonio.

“Con esta iniciativa tratamos de concienciar sobre la importancia de seguir conociendo y así proteger la incalculable biodiversidad que nos rodea. Cada especie es un tesoro que nos descubre diferentes estrategias para sobrevivir, pero solo conocemos una pequeña parte. Ordenarlas por parentesco, nombrarlas y conocer, tanto su forma de vida, como sus áreas de distribución, es la única forma posible de entender el desarrollo de la vida sobre nuestro planeta y aprender a protegerla”, explica Valdecasas. Las cifras varían, pero según los científicos quedan alrededor de 12 millones de especies por descubrir, cinco veces más de las que ya se conocen.

Eriovixia gryffindori

Esta pequeña araña de menos de 2 mm de largo posee una forma y colores que le permiten camuflarse en la hojarasca en la que se esconde durante el día, dado que se cree que es una especie nocturna.

Su rasgo más característico es la forma, que recuerda a la de un sombrero de mago. Es por ello que sus descubridores la han bautizado como gryffindori en homenaje al mago Godric Gryffindor de la saga Harry Potter.

La especie es endémica de los bosques húmedos de la zona centro-occidental de la India, donde construye redes verticales en forma de esfera.

Es un animal que solo se conoce por fotografías dado que los investigadores no han podido recoger ningún ejemplar. Fue descubierto por casualidad mientras los científicos buscaban tarántulas y serpientes en Borneo (Indonesia).

Se trata de unos saltamontes con una increíble capacidad de camuflarse entre el follaje, usando su color y forma para mimetizarse con el entorno. Tanto las patas como el resto del cuerpo recuerdan a hojas. Las hembras poseen un color rosa brillante, mientras que los machos son completamente verdes.

Esta especie es una hormiga espinosa originaria de Papúa Nueva Guinea cuyas espinas dorsales han sido objeto de estudio mediante imágenes en rayos X en tres dimensiones, conocidas como microtomografías.

Normalmente se creía que esas espinas servían de manera exclusiva como mecanismo de defensa, ahora se apunta a que algunas pueden servir de anclaje para los músculos encargados de soportar el peso de la cabeza y mandíbulas, que en su caso son especialmente grandes.

La hormiga se alimenta de semillas que ella misma tritura antes de ingerir y que no podría hacer si el tamaño de sus mandíbulas fuera menor.

Gracilimus radix

El Gracilimus radix es una pequeña rata que forma parte de las siete especies de roedores descubiertos en la isla de Célebes en Indonesia desde 2012.

Esbelta, con orejas redondeadas y una cola con poco pelo, se trata de un animal único por seguir una dieta omnívora, especialmente raíces –de ahí su nombre–, si lo comparamos con sus parientes que son exclusivamente carnívoros.

La Scolopendra cataracta es un nuevo ciempiés que tiene la característica de ser el primero jamás observado por los investigadores que es capaz de sumergirse y correr bajo el agua de la misma forma en que lo haría en tierra firme.

La criatura es originaria de Laos y los científicos temen por su población debido a que la actividad turística de la zona está provocando la rápida pérdida de su hábitat. Cuenta con 20 pares de patas y puede medir unos 20 cm de largo.

Esta raya de agua dulce procede del río Tocantis en Brasil, uno de los máximos exponentes de la biodiversidad donde viven unas 350 especies que, como esta criatura, no se encuentran en ningún otro lugar de la Tierra.

Tiene un color pardo negruzco con motivos amarillos y anaranjados. Suele medir poco más de un metro de longitud y cuenta con un peso de 20 kg.

Los frutos de este arbusto de origen australiano son duros como los huesos de frutas. Cuando se corta, su carne se oxida y pasa del color verde al rojo sangre, dando la impresión de que la planta está sangrando.

Este efecto ha servido para que los botánicos bauticen a la especie como ossicruentum, es decir, ‘hueso sangriento’. Oficialmente se ha descubierto el pasado 2016 aunque se conoce desde hace 50 años, pero erróneamente, se consideraba que era una variación de la especie S. Dioicum.

Illacme tobini

El Illacme tobini es un milpiés que podría ostentar el récord de número de patas que ahora tiene el Siphonorhinid con 750.

La nueva especie, descubierta en el Parque Nacional Sequoia de EE UU, cuenta con 414, pero los investigadores han descubierto que a lo largo de su vida continúa añadiendo segmentos a su cuerpo, cada uno con sus patas correspondientes.

Además, cuatro de sus patas están modificadas para transferir espermatozoides a las hembras que segregan seda. Vive en pequeñas grietas bajo la superficie de suelo y se cree que pertenece a un linaje que se remonta a hace 200 millones de años.

Telipogon diabolicus

Una orquídea recién descubierta y que ya se encuentra en peligro crítico. Solo se la conoce en el sur de Colombia, en un bosque de montaña amenazado por la reconstrucción de una carretera.

La nueva especie tiene una estructura reproductiva derivada de la fusión de la flor masculina y femenina que muestra un aspecto que recuerda a las representaciones que suelen hacerse de la cabeza del diablo, de ahí su nombre.

Esta es una de las 3.600 especies de orquídea que existen solo en Colombia, con cientos de ellas aún a la espera de ser descritas.

Xenoturbella churro

El Xenoturbella churro es un gusano marino, originario del Golfo de California (México). Cuenta con cuatro surcos longitudinales profundos que recuerdan a los churros, por esa razón los investigadores lo han bautizado con ese peculiar nombre.

La nueva especie tiene boca pero no ano, se descubrió a más de 1.700 metros de profundidad y se cree que es un representante de un grupo de gusanos primitivos de los más tempranos en el árbol genealógico de los animales bilateralmente simétricos.
