Jason and Jay are standing in front of two separate cakes, Jay’s with twelve candles and Jason’s with twenty-two. There are piles of presents stacked around them like a billionaire’s kid on Christmas, Jason’s are wrapped in plain red paper, and Jay’s are in a silvery-white paper with little robins on it.
The rest of everyone else—except Stitches and Riddler, who are in Arkham, and Kon, who is still in Kansas—are singing.
“…Happy Birthday dear Ja-sons, happy birthday to you!”
The room goes pitch black as they blow out their candles.
A familiar voice speaks up, “Damn it, not again.”
(Jason grabs for his son and is relieved to find him still standing only a short distance away)
"I don't think I'm meant to be here," pipes up a second voice from AK's general direction. This person is male, and older than Jason. Maybe in his thirties.
"DAD?!" There's a third voice, and the sound of someone being tackled. The third person is young—a teenager, probably.
There is some shuffling as another person picks their way through the assembled crowd to a sheltered corner, but it’s hidden well by the sounds of everyone else.
Jason hands Jay to Wil and leaves to flip the breaker.
A short time later the lights flicker back on to show that nobody disappeared this time, but there are four people who weren’t there before.
“I guess introductions are in order?” Starts the older man, who is currently being full-body bear hugged by a teenager and acting as though that is a normal occurrence. “My name is Jason Todd, and I’m,” he glances at the cakes, “ten years in the past.
“Morel Todd.” His voice is muffled because he’s speaking directly into the eldest Jason’s chest. “I don’t know what happened, and I don’t care because my Dad is alive.”

He's pacing. He's not even aware that he's pacing, but he is. That itch was growing stronger and stronger - but the paper files, the evidence, and the request were all in her hands now. All he needed to do was make the ask.
"I'm sure you understand my need for discretion on this project. I would be happy to do something in exchange for this favor."
@deathxcko is up to no good but war criminals stick together
Her eyes flickered up from the papers at the movement, and back down again. "Grant used to do that too," she muttered. Looking back up again, she gave him a 'really' look.
Tumblr media
"Oh, Jason, am I losing my touch or something? Since when does Searchers deal in anything but discretion?" Uncle Sam wouldn't have her on payroll otherwise. As for as the public was aware, Searchers Inc was a private detective agency, that's all. Addie gently set down the papers, her charming playfulness fading away. This was a fucking lot to take in. It's touching a nerve she doesn't like to think about. Morel trafficked too.
"I'm guessing goodie Grayson and co aren't approving of this." Otherwise, he wouldn't be here. "Want your picks of The Toybox? I think you'll find almost everything you need or want. Honestly, I don't need the favor. If you don't do something about this, I promise if we told Rose, she would." Not that Addie wasn't above getting her own hands dirty.
Getting up, she tidied up the papers and gave them back, heels clacking out of her office towards an elevator.
"I think you'll like it more than my son does." Joey never really did have a love or appreciation for weapons.

Today’s compilation and mix:
This Is Strictly Rhythm, Volume 2 1995 House / Garage House
OK, so, for those that don't know, Strictly Rhythm was, at some point, pretty much New York's premier house label. They're still kicking around today, but I honestly have no idea what the current house landscape is like, so I don't know if they're still held in the same high regard that they were when this double-disc compilation/label sampler mix combo came out in '95.
With that said though, this awesome comp/mix actually wasn't released by Strictly Rhythm themselves; SR had their own series called This Is Strictly Rhythm, but so did German label ZYX Music, and this is Vol. 2 in ZYX's own series.
*BUT,* these tracks also aren't just *strictly* Strictly Rhythm tunes; a couple of them come from a Miami label called Groove On, which was an offshoot of George Morel's, a guy who happened to be a higher-up at Strictly Rhythm at some point. So, there's something of a tangential connection there, but officially, not all of these tunes actually come from Strictly Rhythm.
Both discs of this release make for an excellent snapshot of just how good Strictly Rhythm was in '95 though. It's not a retrospective sampler, so you're not getting the best tunes that Strictly Rhythm had released since its 1989 inception, but rather only tunes that came out around '94-'95. So, if you want a good, ephemeral helping of some sweet mid-90s house tunes from one of New York's greatest labels to ever serve it up, this is well worth a listen.
Ironically though, the most remembered track from these discs isn't even really a house track. It's the one that kicks things off, Josh Wink's "Higher State of Consciousness (Tweekin' Acid Funk)," which is a spectacularly wigged-out, acid-chirping, classic mid-90s breakbeat whopper. When Wink released this song on his Higher State of Consciousness 12-inch, I don't think that he intended for it to be the one to blow the doors off (it's the last track on the B-side, for fuck's sake), but that's ultimately what happened. And it happened on a house label, no less; one that he'd never release on again. Go figure!
More dopeness: Jason Nevins, under the moniker of Soundstation, before he topped charts all across Europe with his famous remake of Run-D.M.C.'s "It's Like That" in '97, delivers maybe the best house track on this release. It's got literal frog ribbits in its rhythm, folks! Just wait for the drums to come in and then tell me you don't love this shit! I dare you!
Also, two great offerings from Chicago house legend DJ Pierre are on here as well (check out my long write-up on how he and the rest of his trio, Phuture, pioneered acid house with the genre's first-ever song, "Acid Tracks"); one as Timewarp and the other as Photon Inc. Both tracks employ a hard and heavy kick drum and a high string, but they definitely go in different directions besides having those two elements in common.
And disc 2 of this release just so happens to be an unexpectedly excellent mix by Germany's Hans Nieswandt. I say unexpectedly because it's never an easy task to do a label sampler mix. Your selection pool is so limited since you can only choose from the output of a single label. And Nieswandt was limited even more by only selecting tracks that were released between '94 and '95. But he really pulled it off here anyway. It admittedly takes a little bit of time to warm up to, but once he gets to around the halfway point with Maurice's "Got Me Burning Up" (DJ Pierre's brother), his set really hits its stride. It's an expertly blended and well-varied house trip that includes some of the tracks from disc 1, some different mixes of some of the tracks from disc 1, and a few tracks that aren't on disc 1 at all, like that aforementioned Maurice joint. And as far as label sampler house mixes go, this might be the best one I've ever heard. No joke.
A superb journey back to 1995 to experience some tasty offerings from legendary New York house label, Strictly Rhythm, by way of Germany's ZYX Music. I unfortunately don't have a link to Nieswandt's disc 2 mix, but feel free to PM me. Plus, if you're in the US, you can currently purchase both discs from Discogs for under $10, and that includes shipping. Well worth the price, in my opinion, considering all the gold that's inside 😁 .
Highlights:
CD1:
Wink - "Higher State of Consciousness (Tweekin' Acid Funk)" Manhattan Progression - "Pray (The USA Anthem mix)" Soundstation - "The Deep State of Sound (State of "Dope")" G. Funk - "Misused (The Underground Network mix)" Timewarp - "A Feeling I Know (W.P. II)" 1-900 - "Keep Him on the Phone (Spero's Deeper 'n Deeper dub)" Photon Inc. - "Project Blast (Wild Style mix)"

The older Jay is still lying on the couch. He’s sleeping in his helmet, which Jason can certainly attest is very uncomfortable.
Tim, Bernard, and E are in the workshop, and Dick is sitting in Jason’s armchair trying to pretend that he isn’t looking back up at Jay every minute or so to check on him.
Wil, Jason, and Morel, who was dropped off by Arlo when they left for work, are in the kitchen—talking quietly and starting on dinner.
Kon and Stitches are marathoning some movie series or another in Stitches’ room.

Garton is set to roll out a new music video for the song in early to mid April, with a full-length director’s cut also available. The video was partially shot on his Oklahoma ranch and in his hometown of Bristow, where he enlisted the help of Bristow’s Police Department and the Juvenile Detention Center. A teaser of the video is currently posted to C.J.’s YouTube channel. About C.J. Garton: Traditional country singer-songwriter C.J. Garton is a 6th generation rancher with Cherokee blood running through his veins, and still lives on a cattle ranch that was founded by his family during America’s land rush in the late 1800’s, just outside of Bristow, Oklahoma.  C.J. is a consummate cowboy in well-worn boots, schooled in the kind of life that rises with the sun and is sustained by the land.  A life like this inevitably shapes a man into a natural storyteller which just so happens to be the very foundation the Red Dirt music scene was built upon. C.J. Garton is a proud descendant of that Oklahoma soil and the unprocessed music that grows out of it.  His songs are, by definition, working man’s music; all heart with an honest story behind them. It was never a path he chose to take; it’s just the way he was born. For years he has split his time between his home in Oklahoma and the one in Nashville where his songwriting savvy has been embraced by artists like Tanya Tucker (“Scars”), David Alan Coe (“Scars” & “There’s No Holes In These Hands”), Struggle and Whey Jennings (“The Gun” & “I Went Crazy”), and Daryl Singletary (“Unlikely Angels”). WHILE STREAMERS WATCHED THEIR FLICKS BY NIGHT...
Merry Christmas Eve Eve everybody! The Phoenix Film Critics Society...
Tumblr media
...of which Your Humble Narrator is proud to be a founding member, recently announced our 2022 Award winners. As always, some of the winners--like Best Actor--reflect my voting, others don't, but there are a lot of movies worth seeing on the list.
A few other odds and ends...
Tumblr media
Cash on Demand--Last week I was shown this 1961 gem I had never caught up with, a no-kidding Christmas movie from Hammer Films! It's available on DVD; I highly recommend. Peter Cushing plays a joyless bank manager, cold and critical toward his employees, who gets his Christmas Eve ruined when a suave bounder (Andre Morell) tells him that his cohorts are holding Cushing's wife and son hostage while he plunders the vault at the provincial branch. Cushing, unsurprisingly, is great--despicable at first, gradually shading into sympathy as his desperation rises--and Morell is sensational, in maybe the best role he ever had, as the sinister yet curiously charismatic thief.
Tumblr media
Richard Vernon nicely leads the small ensemble that plays the branch employees. It's a gripping, imaginative caper, though of course it's just one more variation on the Scrooge story, with the robber serving as a felonious Ghost of Christmas Present.
Tumblr media
Something From Tiffany's--Two guys, played by Ray Nicholson (Jack's kid) and Kendrick Sampson, buy jewelry at the title shop as Christmas presents for their respective lady friends (Zoey Deutsch and Shay Mitchell). One's a pair of earrings; the other's an engagement ring. A mishap mixes up the gift bags, and wackiness ensues. I was recently pointed toward this romcom, streaming on Prime. It's very undemanding, but it's inventive, Zoey Deutsch makes a sweet heroine and her costars, including the great Rose Abdoo as the Tiffany's clerk, are pleasant company. And it seems like it's a cut above most of the Hallmark Christmas movies.
Tumblr media
American Murderer--A stalwart FBI man played by Ryan Phillippe searches for fugitive Jason David Brown, who was on the Ten Most Wanted List at the same time as Osama bin Laden and Whitey Bulger for killing an armored car guard here in Phoenix in November of 2004. As Phillippe talks to Brown's family and acquaintances we get his story in flashback (it's often different from what they're telling the agent). I'm late to the party on this true-crime drama released earlier this year, written and directed by Matthew Gentile and available on various streaming platforms. Don't let the poster fool you into dismissing this as a routine action flick; it's an absorbing feature debut for Gentile, a tense, believable piece of work, full of disturbing scenes that feel like something you'd witness as a passerby. Soap actor Tom Pelphrey plays Brown as a tightly-wound obsequious hustler, sort of a coked-up Eddie Haskell. Though he worms his way into the house and bed of his single-mom neighbor (Idina Menzel) and plays video games with her son, and though he can still get over on his own siblings, his Mom (Jacki Weaver) has long since recognized him for the callous creep he is. But even he isn't prepared for the psychic weight of murder, and Gentile gets across this internal horror impressively. It's worth checking out, maybe after Christmas.

The lefty allowed four hits, struck out six and walked two in seven innings. “That's a pretty special outing,” Cardinals manager Oliver Marmol said.Ĭhicago wasted a sharp performance by Smyly (5-7) in its second straight loss after a five-game win streak. Montgomery threw 99 pitches for the NL Central leaders in the opener of a five-game series, 65 for strikes. But Montgomery retired Nick Madrigal on a grounder to DeJong, ending the inning. Morel hustled into third when shortstop Paul DeJong mishandled the relay from left fielder Tyler O'Neill. Rookie Christopher Morel doubled with two out in the third for Chicago's only hit. “Every bullpen I'm working on something and then when I get to take the ball, I'm competing and just trying to make pitches,” he said. The left-hander struck out seven and walked none in his first career complete game, improving to 4-0 with a sparkling 0.35 ERA in four starts since he was acquired in an Aug. That one run was all Montgomery (7-3) needed. “I was thinking just change his eye level and like, you know, don't let him hit it obviously was my thought,” Smyly said. Smyly (5-7) called it a tough way to lose, given the pitch was way out of the strike zone. It was Pujols' 940th multihit game, snapping a tie with Paul Waner for 10th on the career list. Pujols matched Barry Bonds’ major league record by homering off his 449th different pitcher. “I come out here, no matter where I'm playing, and continue to do my work for 22 years.” “I think at the end of the day you know you have to trust your work, and that's something that I do,” the 42-year-old Pujols said. There was a noticeable round of cheers from the crowd of 29,719 as the three-time NL MVP rounded the bases on his second hit of the night. 14 overall in his final big league season. Pujols led off the seventh with a drive to left-center for his seventh homer in his last 10 games and No.

Field draft control
Tumblr media
Nevertheless, due to the COVID-19 pandemic that began at the end of 2019 and caused numerous deaths and wide economic disruption, the importance of infectious disease control from an international perspective has been recognized. However, the kinds of research conducted and what benefits they have brought to our society have not been adequately verified. As of now, research is supported on the condition that the research plan is reviewed and the actual experiment is supervised. The dual-use risk of infectious disease research using enhanced potential pandemic pathogens (ePPP), particularly gain-of-function (GOF) research, has been debated since 2011. 6Biological Security Research Center, London Metropolitan University, London, United Kingdom.5School of Human Sciences, London Metropolitan University, London, United Kingdom.4Section of Peace Studies and International Development, University of Bradford, Bradford, United Kingdom.3Innovation System Research Center, Kwansei Gakuin University, Hyogo, Japan.2Uehiro Research Division for iPS Cell Ethics, Center for iPS Cell Research and Application (CiRA), Kyoto University, Kyoto, Japan.1National Defense Medical College, Saitama, Japan.22, 2022, in Chicago.Nariyoshi Shinomiya 1 *, Jusaku Minari 2, Go Yoshizawa 3, Malcolm Dando 4 and Lijun Shang 5,6 Louis Cardinals' Albert Pujols before baseball game between the two clubs, Monday, Aug.
