Let's not forget that Jimmy Carter hosted the greatest jazz concert in the history of Washington, D.C.—or maybe anywhere, for that matter. [Ted Gioia]
+
"In 1978, Mr. Carter presented an all-star jazz concert to the White House South Lawn. Its lineup of artists spanned the history of jazz, from the ragtime of Eubie Blake to the avant-garde of Ornette Coleman. As an encore, Mr. Carter — the former peanut farmer — joined Dizzy Gillespie to deliver the two-word chorus of a bebop standard: “Salt Peanuts.”" [NYTimes]

Count Basie and fellow trumpeters played Carnegie Hall on December 23, 1938. It was part of an all-Black "From Spirituals to Swing" program, which bought down the house.

the chellist and the trumpeter - very in the groove - sometimes smirk at each other. pianist mesmerised by the movements of his hands at times jumps from the seat suprised at the melody they produce. drummer alone in the corner drags the rhythm, but oh, so loudly. sometimes fades in the background entirely and then looks around, confused.
an evening full of awfully good impressions. couldn’t calm down even after getting home. it was a jazz concert. and an exhibition of stripburger comiczines on the side.

Today, I had the privilege of attending my friend Shine's Jazz 🎺 concert in Taipei! The lady on the right of the photograph is our English teacher, Susan.
Tumblr media
Shine has lived in the United States 🇺🇸 for 3 to 4 years and has brought American jazz music 🎺 back to Taiwan. As he said, from "Classical Shine" to "New Jazz Shine".

The Guests of honor at today's concert include the Speaker of the Legislature of the Republic of China 🇹🇼 on Taiwan, Mr. Si-kun Yoo, and one of the concert's sponsors, Mr. Thomas Wu, the owner of Taishin Bank, and Shine's father, senior journalist Dr. Sen-Hong Yang.

the band room
When I first stepped into the place that we call
“the band room,”
I didn’t like it at all.
There was paint peeling
off the walls
and there were stains
on the carpet.
The room smelled like wet socks after it rained,
and instrument cases hung out of the cubbies.
But that was when the room was empty.
When my fellow band kids stepped inside
the stains on the floor magically disappeared.
When music filled the air
no one cared about how much paint was peeling off the walls.
When we came back in after a long marching practice
no one cared that they were sweaty or cold
because the room felt like a warm hug.
After we came back from a long competition,
the band room was still waiting for us.
It always seemed to have that effect
when the people I cared about most were in it.
On the last day I stepped into that room with my friends
they told me that the carpenters had finally painted over the off-white walls.
The old crusty carpet had been replaced with clean, gray fuzz.
I didn’t notice because to me
it had always looked that way with my friends in it.
When it was finally time to leave,
I stopped at the door
and smiled at the one place that had been a constant
when everything else in my life had seemed to change.
I guess that’s the thing about the band room.
It tricked me into thinking
four years
was a very long time.

Ekko likes Jazz, Jinx can't stand it but won't tell him so he drags her to bars and she sits there wanting to claw her ears off. Ekko is very aware she doesn't like it and thinks it's funny to watch her squirm.
"Here you go Jinx, a table riiiight next to the trumpet."
"Oh...joy..."

I forgot to tell you about Hux's concert the other day!
It was pretty fun. The clones seemed to think the music was a little weird (Can relate. Jazz is a little weird. I much prefer the jizz wailers.), but we all had a good time.
At the after party, the clones insisted on sharing some of their traditional music with us. I was afraid their competitive natures might lead to a big fight over who was the best singer, but the party just sort of broke out into an impromptu karaoke night, instead.
12/10. Best possible outcome.
