Archaeologists Find 2,000-year-old Makeup in Ancient Roman City of Aizanoi
Archaeologists discovered rare 2,000-year-old makeup and jewelry products during excavations at the ancient Roman city of Aizanoi in Türkiye’s Kütahya province, reports said Saturday.
The excavations, which have been carried out in collaboration with the Kütahya Governorate and Dumlupınar University, were conducted east of the Temple of Zeus, Professor Gökhan Coşkun, the head of the Archaeology Department at DU, told Anadolu Agency (AA).

Noting that they reached 2,000-year-old shops at the marketplace in the ancient city during excavations, Coşkun said they found the remnants of a cosmetics and jewelry shop.
“We found out that the shop sold perfume, jewelry and makeup products,” he said, adding that they found many perfume bottles, pieces of jewelry and makeup.
“Women were always women,” the professor said, noting that they discovered blushes and eye shadows in the excavations.
“We know that ancient Romans stored their eyeshadows and blushes in oyster shells and we found numerous oyster shells in the shops we were carrying out excavations in,” Coşkun said.
The professor said that archaeologists discovered makeup products of 10 different colors and different sorts of hair accessories and jewelry.

It was late March when you had invited Hawks over to cook dinner with you. Well, you were the one standing there, taking care of the cooking process, while he stood next to you, cutting the ingredients for the chicken and potato stew you had planned. It was one of the recipes that your grandma had taught you.
"Do you still feel uncomfortable with the photo shoot tomorrow?" You had realized that Hawks wasn't as bubbly as he usually was. "Mhm," he sighed while cutting the potatoes into cubes, "I don't know why the HPSC thinks this is necessary. I mean, I really like the jewelry those designers came up with and all, but, you know..." You nodded. "Well, I'm sure they are trying to push your popularity. Now that you have entered the top 10, they sure are interested in keeping it that way. It makes sense from a marketing standpoint." Hawks reached out to grab the next potato. "But I'm a hero, not a model," he mused. You laughed as you stirred the contents of the pot in front of you, making sure that onions, garlic, and ginger didn't burn. "I mean, the jewelry is based on your quirk after all, and you sure are an attractive guy. Of course, they would pick you as the model. Could you please hand me the chicken?" You turned your head to look at him, but he didn't react.
"Uhm, Hawks?" He snapped his head around, a light pinkish hue present on his cheeks. "Y-yeah, I... What?" You laughed. "I need the plate with the chicken on it. It's next to you on the counter. Could you hand it over, please?" Hawks nodded and sent a few feathers to carry the meat over to you. "Don't worry," you said and gently laid your hand on his wrist, taking the chicken off his feathers with the other one, "everything will go just fine."

Eventually, the pictures of Hawks wearing the jewelry were published a few weeks later. There were ads in every newspaper and magazine, hell, even giant billboards had his face on them, already advertising the pre-order period that was about to start in another two weeks all over Japan from here on out.
"The pictures turned out great," you said casually, checking out the ad in one of the magazines while sharing a cup of coffee with Hawks at the agency, admiring the beautiful jewelry as well as the professional way the hero had presented the items. "I really like what the designers did with the necklace. It's cute."

You had started your day early this morning, arrived ahead of everyone else at the office, and went through the mail, while the heroes, one after another, entered their workplace. You greeted every single one of them with a soft smile on your lips, carrying out your daily routine of checking the mail. A somewhat fancy looking letter that was adressed to Hawks caught your eye. "Boss, you've got mail," you said, holding the letter out for him to grab. He took the letter from you and opened it, while you started to work on your computer.
Soon, Hawks hummed in approval. "What do you think, y/n?", he asked, holding the piece of paper between your face and the screen of the computer. "I think you should stop blocking my vision so I can keep working," you scoffed, hands still lingering mid-air above the keyboard, eying Hawks. "You gotta read that," the blonde waved the paper back and forth in front of your eyes. You snatched the letter out of his hand, reading the lines out loud.

You trailed off thanks to getting distracted by Hawks, who was waving around two VIP tickets next to your head. "What do you say? You and me," he shot you a toothy grin. "Oh no!" You raised one hand in defense, handing him the letter back with the other one before raising this hand as well. "I'm not going to join you on that," you shook your head vehemently. "Oh, come on! It won't be fun if you aren't there," Hawks pleaded, trying to look as disappointed as he could muster, even pushing out his bottomlip. "This is your jewelry line, I don't have any business being at an event like that. Which hero would bring their secretary anyway?"
Hawks laughed as he couldn't keep up his front anymore. "Well, the invitation says it's for 'Hawks plus one'," he mimicked the quotation marks with his fingers, "I can bring whoever I want." You sighed. "I don't even have anything to wear for such an occasion." The hero wasn't ready to give up. "We'll figure something out. Maybe you're free for a shopping trip on the weekend?" Damn it, you were losing. "And how would I even get there?" In response, Hawks spread his wings, flapping them a few times to emphasize what he was about to say. "I can come pick you up and bring you home after the event. It's not like I haven't been at your place before." The sidekicks that were following the exchange between the two of you in the background shared a surprised look, and you were ready to disappear into a hole in the ground out of embarrassment. "Hawks, please, you're making it sound weird. And I still don't - " He had the audacity to interrupt you once again, a cheeky grin on his lips. "I'm your boss, and I pick you to be my plus one, so..." You rolled your eyes at his antics. "Does this count as overtime then?" He gasped, his hand shooting up to his chest to be placed right over his heart in the most dramatic way you had ever seen. "You hurt my feelings, Ms l/n!" Oh yeah, you had definitely lost against Hawks at this point.
"Fine," you groaned, placing your fingers against your temples and rubbing them in a circular motion to mirror his dramatic behavior, "but you are giving me a massive headache." Hawks grinned while making his way over to his office, the letter and tickets still in his hand. "You could always write an email to my agency and complain about me," he shrugged before entering his office, leaving the door standing ajar behind him. "You do realize that it's me who's answering the emails?" All you could hear was laughter coming from his office, successfully ending the playful banter.

Meeting Hawks at the shopping mall on a Sunday evening was really something you didn't think through well enough beforehand. No matter in which store or boutique you went, there were fans literally everywhere. You had explained for the umpteenth time that, no, you were not dating. You'd tried your best to avoid being in any picture that was taken, leading up to you getting shoved away from him by his fans, who desperately wanted an autograph or touch his wings and, at some point, you simply gave up.
You walked away from the scene and plopped down on a bench in the middle of the mall. Rummaging through your purse, you got your mobile out and texted your boss where to look for you, in case he would find a way to lose his fans. You put your phone away and, more or less out of sheer boredom, started scanning the store windows from a distance. Your eyes widened when something caught your eye. There, in the window of a nice little boutique, was the most stunning dress you'd ever seen. The vibrant red color reminded you of Hawks' wings, the classic form, and the fact that it was neither too flashy nor revealing really met your style. You stood up and walked over to get a closer look, completely missing Hawks calling out your name. You sure were enchanted by the dress in front of you. "Sorry for the delay," he rubbed the back of his head when he had finally caught up to you, still holding his own phone in the other hand. "Nice pick," Hawks said when he took a closer look at the dress in front of you, purposefully not mentioning anything about the color that matched his feathers perfectly. You nodded, gazing down at the price tag. "But it's way too expensive." The blonde next to you laughed. "What kind of boyfriend would I be if I didn't pay?" You could feel your heart skip a beat. "Excuse me?!"
In the end, Hawks did pay the outrageous amount of money for the dress like it was no big deal at all.

May the Love Triangle Be Ever in Your Favour
The Hunger Games is trending (for some unknowable reason) and as my favourite YA series, let’s honour that with a long rant about the series’ infamous love triangle
SPOILER WARNING: Hunger Games, Catching Fire, and Mockingjay by Suzanne Collins
IMO, one of the greatest triumphs of The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins is her masterful ability to make basic political science concepts and political theory not only palatable to a general youth audience but also making them entertaining.
Considering this, I want to take a deep dive into an aspect of the series that is less commonly viewed through a political lens: the love triangle.
One ugly reality of the Hunger Games is that our media ended up mirroring that of the Capitol in the promotion of the books and films. When the films first came out, I remember all sorts of merchandise available -  makeup, Mockingjay jewelry, tote bags, and my local bookstore had these massive cardboard cutouts of the characters with the captions "Team Peeta" or "Team Gale". The marketing teams followed the Capitol's playbook to a tee, centralizing the romance and showmanship over this story the core themes of inequality, poverty, and the abuse of power. 
So let’s do it, let’s reclaim the love triangle from the Capitol.
In my analysis, I see the "love triangle" as acting as a metaphor for Katniss's own struggle to determine her worldview and ideology within the context of the greater inter-district conflict she was forced into. I read Katniss as starting the trilogy favouring Gale. By extension, she favours his state-level utilitarian and militaristic ideologies emphasize individual security and power using no-holds-barred methods. Within the arena, Katniss is introduced to wider Panem, the concept of revolution, and Peeta with his personal ideology that advocates for individual agency towards collective action. His choices, as the boy with the bread and repeatedly acting to protect Katniss, also reveal an ideology that presumes it is the responsibility of individuals and states to protect and support others in their sphere in as pacifist a movement as possible with the end goal of collective welfare.
Through Catching Fire, Katniss is in the thick of the "Love Triangle," but she is also in the thick of determining how she will respond to the revolution: to run away, to play along and ensure personal security, or to become the Mockingjay and use her individual agency to incite collective action for the betterment wider society. By the third book, she sees both Gale and Peeta's ideologies in action and lands on her own ideology, becoming the Mockingjay and using violence sparingly to topple not one but two dictatorial regimes. Her new ideology most closely aligns with the things she learns from Peeta through the series, hence him being her final choice for love interest by the end of Mockingjay. From this view, the inclusion of the "Love Triangle" serves less as teenage-heartthrob fodder and more as a metaphor that allows a young audience to better conceptualize a shifting worldview in a conflict setting. 
This is not a brilliant new theory. I have seen similar ideas floating around online that address this theory. But I want to dive a little deeper into how we can conceptualize this theory using terminology from political science, connecting Peeta and Gale to Realism and Liberalism, the critical ideologies of International Relations.
First up is Gale and his connections to Realism. In the field of International Relations, Realism refers to a style of foreign affairs management that prioritizes the survival and self-help of the state over idealistic ideology or morals. This model encourages countries to prioritize their own self-interests by limitlessly amassing economic and military power under the assumption that all other states are also steadily accumulating their own power. In relations with other countries, a state using a Realist model of International Relations will take any and all appropriate steps to ensure their own security with little, if any, consideration for the morals or ethics of the action. This model effectively sets out that there are different moral codes for individuals within a country versus how a country should treat other nations, with the latter permitting any means of violence in the pursuit of the greater good. The sovereignty of an individual state is emphasized, with alliances only being considered in the case that a nation is too weak to be secure by its own power alone. In this context, security refers to the ability of the country to maintain its own nationhood and internal control by exercising its political, economic, and militaristic power. This model presumes that each individual state must act in the spirit of "self-help," looking only to their own internal ability to provide security or opportunity. Most notably, this model of international relations has been most predominant in unilateral political systems, such as a system in which the Capitol is the dominating political, economic, and militaristic force with no identified contenders.
I believe the model of realism offers a clear parallel to Gale's ideology throughout the series and Katniss's political ideology at the outset of The Hunger Games. At the beginning of the series, we find ourselves in a unilateral system. Both Katniss and Gale hunt because they believe that there is no higher power capable of helping them, meaning that they must rely solely on their own self-help to ensure their family's security and welfare. Their plans for defying the Capitol focus on their own safety and are within their personal power, such as running away. When we finally see Gale in full combat mode in Mockingjay, we see that his day-to-day ethics do not apply in battle and that he is willing to use all means necessary to secure his side's power. These methods include trapping civilians in The Nut and potentially being responsible for the trap that leads to Prim's death. 
 As a foil to Gale, we have Peeta, who models the ideology of Liberalism. Within the study of International Relations, Liberalism refers to a model of foreign affairs that views all citizens of all nations as deserving of fundamental rights and the expression of their own individualistic agency within the higher systems. It sees global power politics as an alterable construct in which war is caused by undemocratic regimes and a failure to balance power in the system. This model emphasizes collective over personal security, though there are disputes by proponents of liberalism regarding whether states have a responsibility to protect other nations from corrupt regimes within their borders or a responsibility to non-intervention in sovereign affairs.
The model of Liberalism is clearly demonstrated by Peeta throughout the series and by Katniss at the end of Mockingjay. Peeta recognizes the undemocratic processes that have lead to the Hunger Games. His primary objectives within the Games are to maintain some semblance of his own ethical code and to cooperate with other players for their collective security. Outside of the Games, we see him repeatedly work to support those in his sphere of influence, such as accepting personal punishment to give Katniss bread or donating some of his funds to Thresh and Rue. By Mockingjay, Peeta calls for a ceasefire and works for the most peaceful possible solution to the war. What Gale is to realism, Peeta is to Liberalism.
Throughout the series, Katniss's ideology shifts in the same breaths as we see her romantic affiliations shift. She starts the series with Gale and with an emphasis on her personal security. In the Games, her affections swing to Peeta, and with it, she finds herself seeking ways to maintain her ethical code in war and to work together with other players for their survival. In Catching Fire, we see her interest turn back to Gale as she works primarily for the security of her and her family. When she decides that joining with other Districts in a revolution is possible, we also see her love for Peeta flourish. In Mockingjay, we see her swing back to Gale momentarily as she launches attacks on the Capitol. Then, after firmly rejecting Gale and his plans for the Nut in favour of a less violent, direct approach, we see her align most closely with Peeta and his ideology through to the end of the book, where she topples two undemocratic systems to help ensure power is evenly balanced throughout the Districts. If we look closely at The Hunger Games, where every element of the book is perfectly designed to introduce YA readers to the fundamentals of Political Science, I have to believe this applies to the "Love Triangle," too.

I have so much to say about Cam‘s outfit and none of it is good. You already mentioned the footwear but the pants look weird on him too. Maybe they don’t fit him well but they could at least have ironed the pants. Also, how the fuck did the stylist think that white is the perfect color for Cameron? Makes him look extra pale and ghostly. In the other hand it’s totally on brand for Cam to make questionable fashion choices so this is also kind of endearing to me iykwim.😂
Same. I think what gets me most about this is that everyone involved could've saved their money and just let Cam pick something out of his own closet. The results would've been the same if not slightly worse, but because a PR agency tagged him in their photos, I'm struck by how many players contributed to this.
So, for starters, this is a new suit from BMC Studio's Spring-Summer '24 RTW collection. To me, it looked like a mismatched silk tuxedo blazer and linen pant, so I'm surprised to find that it was a coordinated set. The trouser is meant to be worn shortish, I guess, which is a Cam signature, but I'm really not feeling the boot cut on him, plus, to your point, stark white is not a color that does him any favors.

Next, the boots. I get that styling footwear with an all-white suit is always a tricky business. I happen to not like dark shoes with white suits, although I've seen it done with some finesse and it wasn't the worst imaginable pairing.

But there is something to Cam wearing a heeled bootie that drives me bananas. Why the heel? He's almost 6 feet tall flat-footed. Why that almost insatiable need to climb another inch when it's categorically unnecessary for him and adds such an overdone flourish?

Less important, but also worth mentioning are the jewels. Brosway markets itself as a unisex brand, okay, but who selected the tennis bracelet and eternity bands for our boy? I'll never not be down for a hit of androgyny with Cameron—I think his best modeling work has a goodly amount of it, but this jewelry reminds me of stuff you'd buy on QVC. It's too tame to be gangsta and too dainty to be subtle. A miss all around...

Federal prosecutors today announced charges against four people allegedly involved in a massive dinosaur bone smuggling scheme. Thousands of pounds of dinosaurs and other fossils were secretly excavated from government lands in Utah, according to court documents. Some were sold at gem shows, and others were shipped to China after being mislabeled as construction materials or gems. The poaching and subterfuge, court documents allege, lasted at least from March 2018 to earlier this year.
“By removing and processing these dinosaur bones to make consumer products for profit, tens of thousands of pounds of dinosaur bones have lost virtually all scientific value, leaving future generations unable to experience the science and wonder of these bones,” United States Attorney Trina Higgins said in a press statement.
"It’s certainly a significant volume of dinosaur bones," says David Evans, a paleontologist at the Royal Ontario Museum who’s not involved in the case. He adds that it’s unusual for so much material to be removed from government lands, and that many people likely aren’t aware of the scale of the black market on U.S. dinosaur specimens.

Some of the dinosaur bones were fashioned into commercial products, including dinosaur dig kits, carved figurines, knives, jewelry, and polished bowling ball-like spheres, according to court documents.
Federal agents seized one shipment of dinosaur bones bound for China in December 2022 in Long Beach, California. The 17,000 pounds of fossil material had been mislabeled as industrial stone.

Before now, one of the biggest known dinosaur fossil busts occurred in 2006, when 8,000 pounds of fossils—including thousands of dinosaur eggs, petrified pine cones, and prehistoric crabs—were seized by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents at a gem and mineral show in Tucson, Arizona. Those items had been illegally taken from Argentina.
In Utah, dinosaur bones found on private lands may be legally excavated and sold, but it is a crime to dig up and sell fossils discovered on federal or state lands. Charges against the four Utah defendants, who are scheduled to have their initial court appearance later today in Salt Lake City, include conspiracy against the U.S., false labeling, theft of U.S. property, money laundering, and attempted smuggling of goods, among others.
A Dino 🦕 Trafficking Scheme
Beneath Utah’s surface, there’s a rich cache of dinosaur fossils, revealing details about prehistoric animals such as carnivorous allosauruses and spine-backed stegosauruses. Almost three-quarters of the state consists of public lands managed by federal or state agencies, and recent fossil finds there include a huge collection of Utahraptors and an entirely new species, a big-nosed distant relative of Triceratops.
Court documents describing the years-long Utah poaching operation allege that Vint and Donna Wade purchased illegally obtained bones and other fossils to sell at U.S. gem and mineral shows and also to ship to China, and that Jordan Willing and his father Steve Willing trafficked dinosaur bones to China using their company JMW Sales. The documents also allege that two unnamed and unindicted coconspirators illegally excavated fossils from federal lands and sold them off to the Wades.
In total, the Wades sold over $1 million in paleontological material to the Willings, according to the court documents, which were filed in the U.S. District Court in the District of Utah.
The fossil heist also led to $3 million in damages, the federal government claims, including large restoration and repair expenses and the costs of losses to science.
During the years of the alleged smuggling activity, the fossil shipments did sometimes run into problems. One shipment of dinosaur bones that was sent from Scottsdale, Arizona, to China in March 2019 was falsely labeled as items including jasper and wood, but the cargo was ultimately held up in China “due to high radiation levels,” court documents state. The fossilized materials had apparently picked up natural radioactive material over time. (Investigators can sometimes discover the origin of fossils based on radioactive signatures in the specimens that provide clues about where they were buried.)

Paleontologists typically remove dinosaur bones using a methodological process designed to limit damage and preserve evidence found in the fossils and their surroundings—information about when dinosaurs lived, what species they were, and sometimes even how they behaved.
Amateur diggers hunting for recognizable body parts to sell, however, generally do not take such care. Federal prosecutors claim that the loss to science from this poaching ring is largely incalculable.

WBMR for Bayonetta, please? If you know, you know.
Sadly, yes I do know. And I have my two cents to share on matter:
For starters, NO, they didn't "made Bayonetta straight". Bi/pan people exist, and we'd appreciate if y'all stopped erasing our existence all the time. Wanna be disappointed at the narrative choices? You can go right ahead and whine for as long as you like; just don't go spreading fake news like that.
People are upset because the revelation was a predictable easy-way-out of things that invalidates Bayo's relationship with Jeanne. Long Story Short: Queerbait. And before anyone comes with the argument that "BayoJeanne was never confirmed in canon, so it can't be considered queerbait", may I remind you that Bayo grows attached to her after regaining her memories, and she travels through HELL to save her despite Rodin's protests, that both of them were confirmed to live together, and THIS OFFICIAL ARTWORK OF BLOODY FATE:

Like, Luka is cute, but Bayo's waaaaaay out of his league. Literally. Even Hideki Kamiya himself confirmed that she'd never involve with him romantically becuase he would end up dead long before she would, and the witch teases him constantly because she finds him annoying. The Trivia section on the series' Wiki says:
"She [Bayonetta] teases Luka; like a toy, but will never commit, he'd die long before her."
So, not only Bayo3's ending is queerbait-y, but it also reeks of Retcon and Character Assassination.
Basically, people have collectively chosen to ignore Bayo3 because the revelation was dumb and makes no sense, and Luka doesn't have the same chemistry that Jeanne has with our beloved Umbra Witch.
Guess Kamiya-san lost his marbles after blocking too many people on Twitter, huh. Wouldn't be surprised if he ruined his own series on purpose because of that (and don't get me started on the whole Hellena Taylor scandal).
Plus, I've heard that the story of Bayo3 touches upon the Multiverse Theory (like almost everything else on the market as of late), so if this is the path we're taking, I'm entering the ring, and grabbing a steel chair to beat canon to death with. There's no third Bayonetta game, folks; only a third Splatoon game.
Without any further ado, let's welcome this Queen to Wondaria:
Bayonetta/Cereza is now, Umbra Madame Bayo, S-Rank Magi, Assigned Gemstone is Phantom Amethyst, Essence is Darkness;
Her mascot/familiar is a white cat named Jeanne, after her beloved rival;
After discovering an universe where she marries Luka, she mysteriously disappears in shame and disgust, aiming to start anew somewhere else;
She then opens a mercenary agency in the kingdom of Arcadia with a group of flamboyant arcadian artists, with the occasional additional of a modelling side-gig;
Bayo is semi-retired. While she's running away from her old life, she doesn't plan on stop dancing so soon;
Is a history nerd who loves to collect ancient and intricate jewelry, specially ones with butterflies and roses;
As expected, she has several admirers. Most of them are queer women with anxiety who find her comforting;
Becomes the wondarian equivalent of Batman, with how many pupils she takes under her wing;
Bayo personally thinks that Wondaria's bouncy atmosphere clashes with her style, but she has already made herself comfortable, and people are instantly enchanted by her;
As a Magi, Bayo goes on to study about the Multiverse Theory, search for a new Universe, and live a life with no regrets.

Deep Dive: K-Box Color Albums

K-pop’s success in Japan was not overnight. Instead, as I had begun teasing out in my post “Building the K-Pop Brand In Japan,” it resulted from a years-long project and the combined efforts of multiple parties, including agencies, idols, and Korean government agencies, whose efforts have been mainly forgotten. Indeed, even well-intentioned admonishments to pay homage or thank those that have made k-pop’s current place in the Japanese market possible only focus on post-2009.
This post is not arguing for greater recognition of the aforementioned groups or their efforts. Instead, this is about narrowing the lens to look at a particular relic from k-pop’s brand-building years in Japan, which I have only briefly touched on: the compilation albums, K-BOX ~Korea Music Collection~ Red and K-BOX ~Korea Music Collection~ Blue.
Released simultaneously by Victor Entertainment in March 2003, the K-BOX albums featured a combined 24 different songs from 24 artists, divided according to the genre, each represented by a color. Red, named for a color associated with energy and passion, represented dance-pop and featured idol groups and rock bands. Meanwhile, Blue, a color meaning peace and calm, featured ballad and R&B songs, mainly from soloists. This color theme would be used as a design motif for the albums' design as well, with the cover art aping the Pantone swatch format down to the use of Helvetica bold. The back of the albums also featured oversized letter ‘R’ and ‘B’ against red and blue backgrounds, respectively.
Although some artists included on the compilations had or were promoting in Japan in 2003, their Japanese releases are not what made it on these albums. In keeping with the ‘Korean Music’ of their title, all songs were in their original Korean, with Japanese translations (and blurbs about each artist) included in the liner notes.
That also was the point of these albums, as well. They were intended to introduce a slice of Korean music to a new audience. Hence the use of the compilation album. As k-pop groups today who release compilation albums before or immediately following their debut in Japan have figured out, the format is ideal for introductions to new audiences. They can offer a best-of, or as Victor Entertainment did, a sampler of the current moment in k-pop, showing that it was not limited to a specific sound or group, but the opposite. It was dynamic, with a much greater range.
