Rebus – BBC picks up new series
BY IAN MCARDELL FILED UNDER NEWS
Richard Rankin takes on the role of the famous Scottish detective
The BBC acquired the Scottish crime drama Rebus. Made by Eleventh Hour Films for Viaplay, and based on Ian Rankin’s novels, the series stars Richard Rankin (no relation) in the title role.
The detective has been previously played, as an Inspector, by both John Hannah and Ken Stott.
Rebus
The six-part series has been adapted for the screen by Gregory Burke who reimagines the character earlier in his career. Detective Sergeant John Rebus is drawn into a violent criminal conflict that turns personal when his brother Michael, a former soldier, crosses the line into criminality. Rebus finds himself torn between protecting his brother and enforcing the law to bring Michael to justice.
Gregory Burke To Adapt Ian Rankin’s Rebus Series as Eleventh Hour Drama Black Watch. Both adaptations, have Richard Rankin’s participation. Based on interviews with former soldiers, it tells the story of troops from the then Black Watch regiment serving in Iraq. The play toured around the world and went on to win four Olivier Awards.

The series promises to explore family, morality and class in an emotionally charged story, set against the Scottish landmarks that Rankin’s readers know so well.
Joining Richard Rankin (Outlander), the series also stars Lucie Shorthouse (Bulletproof), Brian Ferguson (The Ipcress File) and Amy Manson (The Nevers). Plus, Neshla Caplan, Noof Ousellam, Stuart Bowman, Caroline Lee Johnson, Sean Buchanan, Thoren Ferguson and Michelle Duncan.
Filming took place in Glasgow and Edinburgh last year.
Author Ian Rankin says:
“I’m thrilled that Rebus is coming to the BBC. A great cast and a compelling story – I really can’t wait for viewers to see it.”

United Way starts to distribute N.S. wildfire relief
United Way Halifax has begun giving out funding to organizations as part of the wildfire recovery.
The charity says the money is being used to cover needs like food, appliance replacements, baby hygiene and cleaning supplies. Twelve organizations in the Tantallon-area as well as Shelburne and Barrington have received funding so far.
The Wildfire Recovery Appeal has raised more than $1.3 million dollars -- more than $300,000 of which came from a relief concert.
“The money that United Way raises is going to people affected by the wildfires,” said Sue LaPierre, director of social impact strategy with United Way Halifax. “People who were displaced. People who’ve lost their homes. People without insurance. People who can’t afford their deductible.”
About $15,000 went to St. Nicholas Anglican Church in Upper Tantallon.
Their volunteers are working as quickly as they can to give it to those who need it.
“Mostly in small denominations,” said Tanya Moxley, the treasurer and board member at St. Nicholas Anglican Church. “Grocery cards, Walmart, helping with kids supplies -- that kind of stuff.”
The team of volunteers is also managing larger requests.
“We’ve also had two specific requests from United Way to put together a $1,000 package for two folks that were uninsured completely and really needed a lot of support.”
United Way approved about $20,000 dollars to the St. Margaret’s Bay Toy Library, a volunteer-run group that usually helps loan toys to kids.
Their volunteers will be giving $200 gift cards to Toys R Us to kids from the hardest hit areas, some who’ve lost everything, as well as $50 gas cards for their families to get there.
“We think of toys as something silly but it means a lot to these kids and we want them to know that we care and we’re going to do our best to replace it,” said Jill Crowe, who is helping to run the operation.
The wildfires levelled Terry Hiltz’ home. The house was insured and he plans to rebuild.
As he tackles his own tasks, he and his neighbours want to see any relief money help those people who need it most.
“I’m not looking for any handout or anything. I’m not like that,” said Hiltz. “But there’s a lot of people that are way worse off than I am, and I mean, that’s where the money should go to help those people out.”
For some, credit card debt is mounting to cover things like cleaning costs. In Mona Buchanan’s case, insurance has been slow.
“More costs are mounting on,” she said.
Hiltz notes how contractors have been digging into their own pockets to help support people as they rebuild and he believes they too should be eligible for help.
“Contractors that are working for people that maybe don’t have house insurance. Or don’t have a lot of money to work with. Maybe give some money to those people because they’ve got to make a living too,” Hiltz said.
CTV News asked United Way about whether contractors would be eligible for funding and Sue LaPierre noted how United Way only gives to people through non-profits, charities or Indigenous governing bodies.
“It is possible that one of those organizations could try to coordinate efforts and contract out on individual’s behalf,” LaPierre said.
She noted United Way still has well over $1 million left from the money it’s raised thus far.
“It’s just the early days of distributing money,” she said. “We are continuing to fundraise and we don’t know what the future needs are going to be.”
LaPierre said she expects United Way to be working for months to help people as their needs evolve.

And thus we are now up to date, at least until tomorrow when I go to see Birds of Prey with a friend.
So last night (24/02) I saw the beautiful masterpiece Emma. It has stuck with me since. Now this was one of those times where I had run out of things to watch at the cinema and this was all that was showing, I had half an interest but not one to go out of my way to see this. Let me tell you now that I am seriously debating going to see it a second time because I have been emotionally impacted.
Never did I think that when I saw a strong female character that I half related to burst into tears because of her own actions and breaking her own heart that I, in turn, would also start balling my eyes out. Perhaps ‘balling my eyes out’ is a strong term, I think it was more sudden tears that I couldn’t control more describes the trauma. The worst part was after the initial 10 minutes of the film I found myself way more involved in these characters lives than my own, we are talking seriously invested, I was aggressively shipping Emma and Mr Knightly from the get go.
Also I would just like to mention in the off chance that some poor soul reads these that the scene with Emma’s nosebleed toward the end is pure genius. Soooo many connotations and long story short I am in love with this film!
I’m not sure that I would describe Emma as a ‘rom-com’, it is so many aspects of so many genres that I couldn’t be bias and just label it as one, like I cannot praise this film enough, it made me feel things that I had suppressed for a long long time and tried to ignore and it takes a lot of talent, especially from a brit-based film, to do that. By the end I was envious of the love they have in movies. Such drama, and I want in. There is so much romanticism in dramatic relationships in a way which is both toxic and needful, I crave it. But luckily I’m better off on my own, so I am.
Emma both cinematically and literally is exactly what it says on the tin, Handsome, clever and rich. Even if you think it isn’t your cup of tea, it is, it really is and I need people to recognise such talent!. Also shout out to Johnny Flynn, you’ve come a long way from being the dude in the Cineworld advert which eventually got on my nerves. It gives me no end of pleasure to point out to people who you are and who you’ve grown to be lol.
Well done once more to everyone involved in this film, truly a rich masterpiece and I am so happy I saw it.

not to be shady because I like England and was rooting for them tonight and I don’t think Sampson is a bad manager (I actually wish Jill had some of his managerial traits) - but why does he shade teams and coaches every tournament and is never called arrogant as much as Herdman is from some who follow WoSo? He came for Herdman wearing tight shirts like he ain’t out here wearing shirts 2 sizes too small himself btw. And Herdman has turned around a Canadian program, an abundance of youth talent and 2 bronze medals after whatever that mess as before 2011. The gag is that Sampson spends every tournament shading other teams and coaches but continues to get out coached when it matters. i’m just saying....

y’all better start putting some respect on John Herdman’s name!

BBC Reveals Release Date And New Pictures For New Crime Drama Rebus
Rebus, a new crime series based on the best-selling Inspector Rebus novels by Ian Rankin, will launch on Friday 17 May, the BBC has announced. All episodes will be available on BBC iPlayer from 6am, with episode one airing on BBC Scotland on Friday 17 May and on BBC One on Saturday 18 May.
Written for the screen by Gregory Burke (’71, Six Four), Rebus reimagines the iconic character John Rebus as a younger Detective Sergeant, drawn into a violent criminal conflict that turns personal when his brother Michael, a former soldier, crosses the line.
Tumblr media
New pictures released by the BBC show Richard Rankin (Outlander, The Replacement) in the titular role, Brian Ferguson (The Ipcress File, Spanish Princess) as John’s brother, Michael, and Lucie Shorthouse (Line of Duty, Ten Percent) as Rebus’s investigation partner, Detective Constable Siobhan Clarke.
Previously announced cast also include Amy Manson (The Nevers, The Diplomat), Neshla Caplan (The Rig, Scot Squad), Noof Ousellam (Vigil, Guilt), Stuart Bowman (The Serpent, Bodyguard), Caroline Lee Johnson (Trying, Ridley), Sean Buchanan (Censor, Mary Queen of Scots), Thoren Ferguson (The Midwich Cuckoos) and Michelle Duncan (Baptise, Elizabeth is Missing).
Tumblr media
Shaken after a violent encounter with gangster Ger Cafferty, Edinburgh detective John Rebus finds himself at a psychological crossroads. At odds with a job increasingly driven by corporate technocrats, involved in a toxic affair he knows he needs to end, and all but supplanted in his daughter’s life by his ex-wife’s wealthy new husband, Rebus begins to wonder if he still has a role to play – either as a family man or a police officer.
In a time of divisive politics and national discord, Rebus’s ex-soldier brother Michael, who’s broke, desperately crosses the line in order to provide for his family, and Rebus starts to question if the law still has meaning, or if everyone is reverting to an older set of rules. And if so, why shouldn’t he do so too?
Tumblr media
Rebus (6x45’) is written by Gregory Burke and is adapted from the best-selling novels by Ian Rankin. The six-part series is directed by Niall MacCormick (Complicit, The Victim, Wallander) and Fiona Walton (Shetland, Annika) and is produced by Angela Murray. Head Injury - Rose Lavelle Imagine
Tumblr media
Prompt: hi, can u do an imagine with rose lavelle where r is injured like a hit on the head or something like this but Jillian has already made the three substitutions so r must stay on the field obligatorily?
Rose wakes up when she hears a thud followed by a groan. She cracks her eyes open to see her girlfriend sitting on the floor beside their bed. Rose smirks at her.
“Did you just fall off the bed?”
“No,” Y/N grumbles, “This was an active choice I made.”
“You chose to fall off the bed.”
“I didn’t – whatever. I’m going to shower.” Y/N stands up and leans over to give Rose a quick kiss. “We have to leave in an hour.”
“Mm, okay.” Rose says, her eyes closing again.
“That means get up!” Y/N yells from the bathroom.
The two get ready and head to the stadium. They have a game against Canada and everyone’s been buzzing with excitement. The two teams are friends off the field and everyone loves getting to catch up whenever their teams play. On the field though, is a different story. Both teams were extremely competitive and would do anything to win. That lead to games getting a little too rough with a few too many fouls. Rose is still excited, just like she is before every game.
Rose immediately walks over to Sam when she enters the locker room and Y/N gets pulled away by Mal. The locker room is loud, everyone is talking (yelling) and there’s music blaring from Sonnett’s speakers. The team is getting pretty rowdy when Jill comes in. Everyone quiets down and listens to her. They go line up in the tunnel and Y/N pokes Rose in the back. Rose turns and raises her eyebrows.
 “Score a goal for me?”
Rose rolls her eyes. “We’ll see.”
The game quickly gets rough, as expected. There are fouls on both sides, although Rose thinks Canada might be a little but more aggressive than them. The game remains scoreless until Alex is taken down in the box in the 41st minute. She stays down and the trainers come out. Rose watches Jill tell the bench to start warming up. Alex has been recovering from an injury she received a few weeks ago so it’s no surprise Jill’s being cautious. Alex stays in the game but Jill doesn’t stop Christen who’s warming up on the side.
Pinoe scores the penalty kick, putting USA in the lead 1-0. Canada seems to get even more aggressive, if that’s even possible. Rose is relieved when the first half ends. She’s sure the rest of the team is too.
In the locker room, the girls all congratulate Pinoe on her goal and Alyssa on her great saves. Alyssa shrugs and says she couldn’t have done it without her Department of Defense, while Pinoe soaks up the praise like a sponge. Alex is pulled out of the locker room to get checked by the trainers again. Rose smiles when she sees Y/N walk up to her.
“It’s pretty intense out there. I thought we’re supposed to be friends.” Y/N grins.
“All’s fair in soccer and war.”
Y/N’s nose crinkles. “That’s not how it goes.”
Rose giggles and kisses Y/N’s nose. “Don’t care.”
Jill comes in and gives the team a pep talk and announces that Christen is subbing in for Alex. She assures everyone it’s just precautionary and that Alex should be able to play the next game. They take the field again and start the second half. Canada seems to have regrouped and are pressing hard. They equalize in the 67th minute off a header from Sinclair. USA quickly takes the lead again off a screaming goal from Rose. Y/N sprints to her as soon as she sees the ball hit the back of the net and leaps into her arms. Rose laughs as Y/N screams in her ear. The rest of the team engulfs them in a hug.
The game goes by quickly after that and Rose barely notices the next two subs, Lindsey for Sam, and Sonnett for Kelley. As the game goes on, Canada gets more and more aggressive. It’s clear they’re fighting to win and will do what it takes, but so will USA. In the 83rd minute, Y/N goes up for a header at the same time as Kadeisha Buchanan and Rose hears, rather than sees, the elbow that comes down on Y/N’s head. The ref blows the whistle immediately as Y/N falls to the ground holding her head. Rose rushes to her side immediately.
“Hey, it’s okay. Just breathe, you’re okay.” Rose says.
“I’m not fucking okay! My head hurts!” Y/N snaps. Rose knows she doesn’t mean it, but she recoils anyway. Y/N grabs her arm before she can get up.
Rose can hear Pinoe and Tobin arguing with the ref over the lack of card, but Rose only listens to what the trainers are saying. They’re going through concussion protocol and Y/N grimaces through the whole thing.
“I don’t think you have a concussion,” The trainer says, “And normally I’d take you out just to be safe, but we don’t have any more subs. The game is almost over, do you think you can stay on?”
Rose sees Y/N’s “are you fucking kidding me” look, but she nods anyway. As she stands up, Rose whispers to her, “Are you okay?”
Y/N pinches the bridge of her nose and sighs. “My head is fucking killing me.”
Rose wants to tell her to go off, but she knows they can’t play a player down, even this late in the game. They keep playing, although they’re really just passing the ball around, trying to keep possession. They’re winning and there’s no point in trying to score again and giving up the ball for a Canada counter-attack. Rose keeps glancing at Y/N, who’s not running around like she normally would. She’s staying in the same spot, only jogging a few steps then stopping. Rose wants to do something, but she can’t.
As soon as the ref blows the whistle, Rose runs to Y/N’s side, ignoring her teammates cheering around her. Y/N is sitting on the ground with her head in her hands. Rose kneels beside her and rubs her back.
 “Are you okay?”
It’s a stupid question to ask, Y/N’s obviously not okay, but Rose doesn’t know what else to say. Y/N looks up with tears in her eyes.
 “It hurts.” She whined.
“Okay, let’s go inside. The trainers will help.” Rose helps Y/N up and leads her off the field.
Y/N is quickly taken by the trainers to the training room and Rose is left to either wait, or join the celebrations on the field. She doesn’t know what to do, but luckily for her, the team makes their way into the locker room where Rose is sitting by herself. Most of the team doesn’t notice Rose, which was fine by her. Her thoughts were in the room down the hall where Y/N was. Rose doesn’t notice Ali sit next to her until Ali touches her shoulder.
 “You doing okay?”
Rose shrugs. “I’m just worried about her.”
Ali nods. “We all are. It sucked, what happened. We all wished there was something we could’ve done.”
Rose sniffles and Ali pulls her into a tight hug. They’re interrupted by a knock at the door. It’s one of the trainers and she looks around until she spots Rose.
 “Rose? Y/N’s asking for you.”
Rose practically runs to the training room and bursts through the door. Y/N is sitting on a training table holding a cool towel to her forehead. She looks miserable but her face lights up when she sees Rose.
“Hey,” Rose says quietly, “How are you feeling?”
“Like I just got elbowed in the head.” Y/N jokes. Y/N takes Rose’s hand when she notices Rose’s worried look. “I’m okay. No concussion, just a headache. And a pretty big bump too, if you wanna feel it?”
Rose finally smiles. “No, thank you. I’ll take your word for it.”
“Can we leave now? I wanna sleep and cuddle.” Y/N pouts.
“Of course, head injuries always call for sleep and cuddles.” Rose helps Y/N stand up and walk out of the stadium.
“I thought all injuries constituted sleep and cuddles, but if it’s only head injuries, then I don’t have to cuddle you the next time you’re sore.”
Rose glares at Y/N. “If you weren’t hurt right now, I’d hit you.”
“But then you wouldn’t get the cuddles you love so much.” Y/N says.
“I guess not.” Rose shrugs. “Now come on, let’s get you home to rest.”

I gotta say i'm sad that again I wasn't at all impressed by either Spitse or VDS, both seemed really all over the place. Granted the whole team was scrambling to get things together, but yeah :/ Not too boring for a football game though! :D Which is all we can hope for ultimately (France v Canada was fun although a little one-sided, but some gorgeous plays on both sides, Buchanan was doing bits in the defense!)
It was a bit of a mess at times wasn't it? Hopefully the next two games will be better - they're going to have to be much better against France in particular!
I only caught a tiny bit of the France-Canada game - too many matches on at the same time!
I really think that both Spitse and VdS shouldn't be starting that much anymore. Spitse is a fantastic set piece taker, no doubt about it, but I do think some of the reason the attack isn't really there is that she's not really firing in the midfield. Frankly Dom has shown with Wolfsburg that she can take a mean free kick, so maybe she should have a go 😉
I'd really like to see a midfield of Jill-Daan-Jackie or Daan-Jackie-Dom at some point, with Lieke-Viv-Lineth up top.
