The Strength card is a representation of inner fortitude, courage, and self- confidence. It signifies the triumph of compassion, patience, and the strength that lies within.

Horseshoe crabs are ancient creatures that demonstrate their own form of quiet strength in the face of change. They have withstood the test of time for hundreds of millions of years, and survived through numerous environmental shifts and extinction events. Their unique appearance and armor-like exoskeletons might evoke a sense of formidable power, but beneath this exterior, they demonstrate a gentle grace and calmness.

Horseshoe crabs have survived countless challenges and environmental changes, attesting to their ability to endure. They demonstrate an incredible composure and steadiness despite the ever-changing tides and conditions they encounter.

Additionally, the horseshoe crab's role in nature reflects the deeper meaning of the Strength card. As crucial players in the ecosystem, they play a significant role in maintaining the balance of marine life. Their eggs serve as a vital food source for migratory shorebirds and many other animals.

In May and June on full/new moon nights during high tide, they engage in mass spawning events. Multiple individuals come together, demonstrating their capacity for harmonious interactions and collective purpose.

These ancient creatures inspire us to embrace our own inner strength and wield it with compassion, to find balance within ourselves, and to approach life's challenges with grace and determination. They remind us that true strength is not found in overpowering others but in understanding and harmonizing with the world around us.

ava & shannon - divinium

The Halo being so brutally and beautifully severed from her body had stretched spinal nerves near to tearing and then beyond. Reya had pumped her full of a divinium cocktail, but the pain in her spine is omnipresent now. That persistent echo of the last moments of her first life haunts her, sharp contrast to the barely-remembered softness of Mary's face pressed to hers. And then her muscles had drawn taut as bowstrings through days-months-years spent in a protective huddle over Ava as the girl bled out and resurrected and bled out and resurrected and finally, finally sat up. 

Now, Shannon finds that if she pushes herself, it sends long clawing pains radiating through her back, threading between the gaps of her ribcage, threatening to lever the bones apart with the ferocity of the muscle spasms that breach the surface in their wake.

There's no way to image her back properly, Jillian's team says, wringing their hands and looking anywhere but at the shackles that hold Shannon's wrists to the table. Absolutely no chance, not with the ring of divinium resting dormant between her scapulae, nor with the sheer amount of metal coursing through her bloodstream, turning capillary beds into river deltas that shine phthalo blue beneath her skin. Jillian doesn't seem impressed by this conclusion, her eyebrows pinched together, mouth a thin line.

"She doesn't like to be told 'no'," Ava explains later, as they're digging their way through two family-sized sushi boats. "If something is labelled impossible, she takes it as a challenge." 

The remnants of the rawness where the handcuffs had chafed Shannon's wrists now glint bright blue beneath the cuffs of her hoodie, and she tugs the elastic down over the heels of her palms. Her eyes find Ava's and she leaves the cuffs aside, lunges for her pair of chopsticks so she can battle for the final crab roll. She lets Ava win, as always, and receives a chipmunk-cheeked grin as a consolation prize. As Ava chews, swallows, Shannon rolls the words around in her mind, examining them from every angle. "She's the one who tried to use you as a battery pack," she says finally.

Ava grumbles the affirmative and stabs at another piece of sushi. "She used Lilith in the same way, I think. As a means to an end, I mean. Not as a battery. Though she'd probably have given it the old college try if she'd had any suspicions it might work."

"I've gotten the feeling she wants to make me her next lab rat."

"I wouldn't put it past her."

Appearance and Personality

Appearance: Eldoris has a regular but medium average male body build, but he seems to have some muscular up-putting due for swimming a lot underwater and in addition of more training. He has light blonde beige colored hair which it looks long but slightly messy when being tied up for physical training or SIDC workloads. He has sliver grey colored eyes which they can turn into nude pink whenever he uses his myth abilities. Eldoris has selective personality when it comes to interaction towards anyone.

Personality: Was born within in one of the quiet neighborhood apartment buildings within the city streets of Crystalsle in the Island of Enchantment, as the youngest child within his family, he's mostly with his father and older brother whenever he's mother is busy with work. Around his childhood, especially when his mother isn't busy, she tends to teach him of respecting others, in various genders that he will might meet in the future when he gets.

Eldoris, whom that he had it during his childhood days as a younger toddler to kid, didn't know much about it till he interacted with a few of anyone he sees or they had spoken to him, thanks mother's teachings he then became to social a little bit till he was used to it.

Eldoris has a quiet tongue though he's mostly selective when speaking to anyone he speaks to within the academy, though there are days that he would stay quiet throughout the week but he will be talk if you make the move on him first, he isn't good at starting the conversation but will only talk back if you do it first though.

Despite his selective social circle on talking at random, he seems more relaxed whenever he's with his fellow half-myth companions and his SIDC co-workers. Eldoris is used to his race chaotic messes, which he seems to be okay with but till he gets annoyed with some of his friends slightly on accident or not.

If you were to get close to him slowly day by day or week by week, we can all tell he has a sweet personality after chatting with you, which many can see a rather a cute side of him eventually, only if you ever can catch him off guard that is, of you can you'll see a stuttering point of view to his embarrassment.

Don't to be fooled by his appearance, as an ocean-myth he knows when to give you a shocking welcome. Eldoris doesn't trust much at random strangers, especially to those who are trying to get on his good side if he ever sees it on coming. Eldoris will keep his act up for long as he wishes to be, but then when the timing comes, you will get a free yet lasting electro shocking from him eventually. Mostly he won't feel a little pitiful about it.

-The name 'Eldoris' means by the word 'gold'. While his surname 'Treyton' is a meaning "a settlement near trees".

Marine Biology Story of the Day #9

Welcome back to the blog—hello new followers!  

So what does a marine biologist actually do for work?  Is it always adventure on the high seas?  

Well, it’s not always adventure on the high seas—you see, science isn’t exactly super well funded these days, and you need money to do that kind of stuff, AND that money usually comes from shareholders that want you to research things that may be beneficial to them.  In addition, as a biologist, you have to spend long periods of time on shore in your office and lab, analyzing data and writing peer reviewed journals in the hopes that they’ll be published.  That’s the price you pay for the cool fun times.

So what do I actually do for a living?  

Welp, a big chunk of my research is working as a shrimp disease researcher and a shrimp ecologist.

Really, Jillian?  You say, What about the sharks?  What about the deep sea?

Well, here’s the thing—big charismatic animals are cool and all, but my tumblr handle is teenyfish, and that is because what I like to research are the tiny animals that are much lower on the food chain.  Why?  Because in many ways, they are the most important, and the most diagnostic when it comes to determining the health of an ecosystem.

How’d I get into shrimp disease?

Well, I used to work for the Virginia Institute of Marine Science Trawl Survey.

Basically, we went out on the Chesapeake Bay and would catch all species of fish to determine how fish populations were doing in the Bay from year to year.  I began noticing that all the penaeid shrimp we caught began showing signs of blackened gills.

I informed one of our P.I.’s (principal investigators) and our Black Gill Disease survey was born.  

What is Black Gill Disease? Well, the blackened gills are actually an immune response that a variety of marine invertebrates (crabs, shrimp, lobsters) have in response to foreign invaders (bacteria, viral disease, parasites).  In penaeid shrimp (aka the shrimp we like to eat—think bubba gump shrimp), its caused by Hyalophysa lynni, a parasitic ciliate that embeds itself into the gills of the shrimp. Ciliates are microscopic single celled organisms that propel themselves around with little “hairs”

Once the ciliate bites down on those shrimp gills, the shrimp release melanin  that surround the ciliate and begin releasing chemicals that break it down.  Unfortunately though, the chemicals also cause tissue death in the surrounding gill tissues, so they start not being able to breath as well. It’s kind of like when you get the flu (or COVID-19—lets be topical) and your body responds by giving you a fever that makes you super duper weak.  Gets rid of the problem, but you feel like shit.

So, this means the shrimp are weaker, slower, and about 2-3x more susceptible to predation.  Which means THEY IN DANGER GIRRRLLL.

This disease was first “discovered” in Georgia and North Carolina in the late 90’s, so it’s actually relative new and completely understudied.  Which means once I jumped on this project my career ABSOLUTELY BLEW UP (in a good way).

I got a job as a biologist with Texas Parks and Wildlife’s Coastal Fisheries Division about two years ago, mostly because of the shrimp disease research I was doing in Virginia.  Since moving down to Texas, I’ve been in charge of two major shrimp disease monitoring projects across the entire Texas gulf coast (It takes 8 hours to drive the full length from Louisiana to Mexico).  We go out and collect samples from 7 major bays in Texas (Sabine Lake, Galveston Bay, East and West Matagorda Bay, Corpus Christi Bay, and Upper and Lower Laguna Madre)

I rely pretty heavily on our fisheries techs to collect samples for me since our coast is so expansive, but I do go out often on our local bay with my husband (he works at another local TPWD lab).  

Once we get shrimp, I isolate DNA from shrimp gill tissue, and then I use a really cool DNA fragment tissue sequencing method to see if the shrimp have H. lynni DNA or not.  DNA sequencing is just a matter of using DNA primers to go in and select a certain part of the ciliate genome that is unique and differentiated from shrimp DNA. DNA is just a sequence of proteins--adenine (A), thymine (T), guanine (G) and cytosine (C), and each species of animal/plant/bacteria have parts of their genome that have a unique ATGC pattern—that’s how we can differentiate species!

Once I know which shrimp are positive for black gill, we can determine if temperature, salinity, dissolved oxygen, location, or time of year have an effect on how much black gill we see in shrimp populations coast wide.

Now, I got asked to be on TPWD’s PBS show—so here’s a small segment to kind of streamline what I do.  Watch me be awkward on television.  

I’m just going to point out, I do not do lab work CSI style, in the dark.

So in addition to black gill, I’m beginning to look at other common shrimp diseases too (like the aforementioned White Spot Disease in the video).  Because of this, I got to go to a shrimp disease pathology course at the University of Arizona.  Why is a marine disease lab in Arizona you ask?  Because Arizona is not near any body of water, so they do not risk contamination.  Also, they tell me the Arizona sun is pretty good at disinfecting aquarium equipment. I got to learn new DNA sequencing methods and dip my toe into histology, which is basically sectioning shrimp samples and dying organs so you can see what is going on with an organism’s body.

Because of this, my TPWD coworkers and I are hopefully going to hop onto a big disease study with the University of Arizona and South Carolina’s Department of Natural Resources—but we are still waiting to hear back from the USDA to see if our study is going to be funded.  Fingers crossed.

In addition to the University of Arizona study, I’m working with Texas SeaGrant and commercial shrimpers to collect more samples in the Gulf of Mexico (think WAAAAAYYYY offshore, 70-100 miles offshore).  This is where all the big adult shrimp are, and I want to collect samples to see if adult shrimp are passing the disease to their offspring as their babies move inshore.  And from the looks of it, the adults have it to.

I’m sure I’ll have some more information for you all in the future as my studies progress, but for now, I’ll leave you with this:  The Texas Gulf Coast shrimp populations are infected with H. lynni—and at some of the highest levels in the country.  In the summer, upwards of 80% of shrimp can be infected in coastal Texas regions.  In addition, low salinity and high temperatures tend to increase disease prevalence as well, and this might be tied to climate change and warming waters, as well as salinity changes due to increased precipitation (due to climate change) and the rerouting of river flow.
