#Jim Kirk is seriously the love of my life

Spock prime and AOS Spock canonically meet. You and many other authors have done a great job exploring and delving into the interesting ways they react.

Recently I've been fascinated by TOS Kirk might react to his AOS counterpart.

You are one of my favourite fic authors, I would love to get your opinion. I've recently reread The Recitation of Names and adored your exploration of Kirk. Personally, I find that AOS Kirk's characterization emphasized how fascinating and elusive the inner workings of TOS Kirk's mind is.

On surface level I think that AOS Kirk would use meeting Kirk prime for self loathing purposes. It probably would activate his problems with authority, because who is more of an authority on your life and how it should/could have gone than an older version of you.

TOS Kirk's reaction is harder to crack.

I think you're right about AOS Jim. In my fic Grief as a four-dimensional figure, knowing about Kirk Prime triggers Jim's daddy issues...you know, guy you've never met who everyone's always comparing you to, who you know you'll never be as good as. Especially if AOS Kirk isn't with his Spock and he knows TOS Kirk is/was—like great, if I were as cool as him, Spock would like me, but I'm not so he never will.

TOS Kirk though....hm. If he was a lot older, I think he'd try to help, give his younger self the kind of fatherly guidance his own dad gave him. (AOS Jim almost certainly would react badly to that.) But if they're the same age? I think TOS Jim would be downright offended that he worked and struggled and was top of his class and worked his way up the ranks, only to see his alternate self just got handed a ship for saving the Earth a total of once. I could imagine some resentment. Plus, Kirk Prime doesn't have much patience for officers who mess around and don't take their job seriously. He'd be pretty cold to him.

Alternatively, they'd have sex. Because both of them agree, James Kirk is hot and charming.

Here’s my thoughts on Star Trek V: The Final Frontier

There’s swear words, star trek, and spoilers oh my!

Start it up:

- “The planet of galactic peace.” Somehow. I don’t believe that.

- This guy on his horse looks like death

- “Let us explore it together.” Come take my hand. Let us take ibuprofen together.

- It’s hard to dislike Sybok when he smiles like that so they have to add in a somewhat evil laugh

- Epic music is a go (Music by Jerry Goldsmith)

- “‘You’ll be able to relax’ you call this relaxing? I’m a nervous wreck. If I’m not careful I’ll end up talking to myself.” Kirk convinced him to come here and now he has to watch his idiot husband climb a rock

- Kirk knows Spock and McCoy are there to catch him when he falls but goddamnit if they aren’t both really tired of his shit

- No but seriously what is with science fiction and thinking ‘yeah there’s a race of cat people’ looking at you too doctor who

- Caithlin Dar is awesome already.. I don’t trust Talbot (edit: haha too bad they’re characters don’t really do anything anyway)

- Scotty narrating is my favourite actually

- UHURA IS AWESOME

- are Uhura and Scotty dating?

- “Admit it. We’re lost!” “All right, we’re lost. But we’re making good time.” Didn’t know I needed Sulu and Chekov to go hiking together but I do

- “Yes uh- yes, we’ve been caught in a blizzard.” *Chekov starts blowing into the microphone* god I love them. He just went with it!

- Bones ringing the triangle out of spite and love

- The husbands sitting down and eating beans. Why would they make star trek about literally anything else

- Coming back strong with the extra wh sound (it was in the last movie when McCoy said whales)

- The trivia panel is telling me that one of the goofs is Kirk calling Tennessee whiskey bourbon and it looks like something Spock would write

- McCoy laughing and talking about Spock’s Vulcan metabolism and Spock indulging by saying he’s also half human and McCoy responding with “well it certainly doesn’t show” to which he knows Spock’ll take as a compliment. Yes I do need old married mcspirk.

- “You know, you two could drive a man to drink.” Then Kirk with all the innocence and nonchalance in the world says, “me? What did I do?” “What did you do? You really piss me off, Jim.”

- McCoy is lecturing Kirk cause he can’t take anymore of his almost dying bullshit

- “I knew I wouldn’t die because the two of you were with me.” “I do not understand.” “I’ve always known I’ll die alone.” I’m about to cry because this is true. He dies in a distant future without either of them. Thinking about it they all somewhat die alone. Maybe Spock was there for McCoy but we never see his death. And Spock dies in an alternate past :(((

- “It’s a mystery to me what draws us together…Other people have families.” “Other people, Bones, not us.” They are each other’s family.

- SPOCK ROASTING A MARSHMALLOW (not sure why they call it a ‘marsh melon’)

- This is the silliest thing they could have possibly put in a movie (this is like a comfort fic but a movie and I am so here for it)

- “God, I liked him better before he died.” McCoy is getting nasty and Kirk is now like ‘well time to sleep’

- “Life is not a dream.” “Go to sleep, Spock.”

- Why is the head Klingons outfit so cunty. Why’re the Klingons so silly?

- They caught Spock in his jammies

- “Well gentlemen, it seems shore leave has been cancelled.” They can’t go on ONE DATE

- Why’re they huddled together on the ship like that?

- “‘All I ask is a tall ship and a star to steer her by.’” “Melville.” “John Masefield.” “Are you sure about that?” “I am well versed in the classics, Doctor.” “Then how come you don’t know Row, Row, Row Your Boat?” Spock makes the most frowny and tired face imaginable. I think McCoy was justified in biting back there cause imagine you wake up, get in a shuttle, and then get corrected. All I’m saying is Spock was being a bit of a know it all (wouldn’t have him any other way)

- “*laughs* I don’t think I’ve ever seen him happier.” McCoy is so jolly in this one

- The yeoman with Kirk’s jacket is played by Shatner’s daughter

- HE ACTUALLY HAS A SHIRT THAT SAYS ‘go climb a rock.’ omg

- That fucking outfit oh my goodness

- “What’s the matter, Jim?” “I miss my old chair.” And then it switches to Spock who’s going :[

- Love how the Klingons all know who Kirk is. Like he’s THAT important

- Aww Kirk can’t write his diary :((

- Their silhouettes are so cute (34:06) (also they look like how aliens coming out of a spaceship look, I just think that’s neat)

- McCoy has to turn on the lights like, ‘stop sulking in the damn dark.’

- “Imagine that, a passionate Vulcan.” What McCoy? You want Spock to be more passionate?

- “This is Captain Pavel Chekov speaking.” He’s so silly for that. But also it’s probably best he doesn’t say ‘acting captain’ as that would arouse suspicion cause as everyone knows the captain is always the first to go on dangerous away missions

- What’s going on? Why is Uhura dancing ? What.

- What. Was. That. Scene. Why.

- “Spock.” “Yes, captain?” “Be one with the horse.” “Yes, captain.” Oookay

- “Hold your horse, captain.” Good one.

- Spock just. He just nerve pinched that horse.

- Spock does not know how to deal with seeing his estranged brother again (yeah I was spoiled) so, “you are under arrest for seventeen violations of the neutral zone treaty.” Is what he went with

- Sybok complimented and then winked at Kirk HE IS TAKEN

- “We’re going to forego the tractor beam and fly her in manually.” “Manually?” “How often have you done this?” “Actually it’s my first attempt.” Personally wouldn’t trust anyone else to attempt that other than Sulu. He is THAT bitch (/pos)

- EXPLOSION!!!!! CRASHHHH

- whooo space stuff! Sorry the photon torpedo just missing as the enterprise went into warp was cool

- Spock’s got a gun!

- McCoy comes out of the ship and is so confused and looks to Spock and Kirk

- Ohhh no. Sybok is gonna do his thingy magic thing to Sulu and Uhura with Scotty watching ‘em from above

- “What you have done is betray every man on this ship.” “Worse. I have betrayed you. I do not expect you to forgive me.” “Forgive you? I ought to knock you on your goddamn ass.” “If you think it would help.” “You want me to hold him, Jim?” “You stay out of this. Why, Spock? Why?” Lots to think about in this dialogue. But I think McCoy offering to hold Spock is him going ‘Jim you’re overreacting can’t you see he’s already remorseful?’ I could be misreading but if you understand it as the idea of McCoy holding him down is so redundant because Spock is strong enough to get out of his grasp easily but probably wouldn’t resist in this moment then it’s just like aughhhhhh

- Also Kirk asking Spock to shoot someone is bad enough. But the fact that it was his brother…

- Kirk is in disbelief. He didn’t know his own husband has a brother (half brother technically. Same Spock same.)

- “Stop it, Jim! Spock could no more kill his own brother than he could kill you. If you want to punish him for what he’s done, why don’t you throw him in the brig? Besides, we’ve got bigger problems to deal with.” Bones not only defending Spock, but also getting them back on track

- Apparently both Gene Roddenberry and William Shatner didn’t like that Sybok was Spock’s brother. Roddenberry didn’t think that Sarek would have a child with another woman (I kinda agree but also Pon Farr would’ve made him become engaged to a Vulcan before he met Amanda, so it’s not completely unthinkable). And Shatner didn’t like it cause it was too much like ‘a soap opera plot line’ but they went with it so that Spock’s actions made sense with the way he acted towards Sybok. I personally like that Spock has siblings he never told anyone about. It’s funny.

- lmao this time Kirk gets to stand on top of Spock to reach something (See patterns of force)

- Spock talking about himself in the third person because he doesn’t want to admit that he couldn’t get out of the brig

- “The bond between these three is strong, difficult to penetrate. This will be quite a challenge.” IT’S CAUSE THEY’RE MARRIED

- It’s funny that- canonically - Sybok can sense a really strong bond between them

- Kirk and McCoy’s ass I mean- oh look it’s Spock. With rocket boots!

- Spock holding onto Kirk and McCoy for their dear lives

- “I believe I overshot the mark by one level.” “Nobody’s perfect.” McCoy keeps saying this to Spock and I think it’s healing. Also flirting.

- They’re lit really nicely

- McCoy is NOT having this “Sounds like brainwashing to me.” You’re so right, back OFF Sybok

- (drawable moment 1:08:17)

- “Your pain is the deepest of all. I can feel it. Can’t you?” OH WAIT WE GET TO SEE MCCOYS PAIN WHAT

- I have no words for this scene. Holy Shit.

- Forced therapy

- Oh they all get to see each others pain cause they’re connected

- Spock gets to see his own birth… why. What.

- young Sarek 😧😳😳😳

- “So human.” YOU FUCKED THE HUMAN SAREK. God he’s such a bitch.

- SPOCK FOR THE WIN!! He’s not leaving

- MCCOYS STAYING WITH HIS HUSBANDS!!! YEAH LETS GOOO! (Personally I don’t think McCoy would go with Sybok at all, but I wasn’t sure what the writers were gonna do and I was scared they would make him leave)

- I know we’ve moved on from this but maybe Sarek saying that Spock was human was like saying ‘he’s got your eyes’ like comparing Spock to Amanda in appreciation. We’ll never know but it’s still a bitchass thing to say.

- Kirk has a plaque with ‘To boldly go where no man has gone before’ what a nerd

- They’re really hot in their uniforms

- hi god

- Kirk wants to ID god. Fair enough.

- There’s McCoy in the corner. Losing his religion

- “I doubt a God who inflicts pain for his own pleasure.” YEAH McCoy’s not standing for this shit

- Oh so Sybok wasn’t the enemy. Yeah that’s a good ending for his character. Saying bye to sock and asking for forgiveness

- “Beam up Spock and Dr. McCoy now.” “Now, just a damn minute-” Kirk said that so fast so that his husbands couldn’t argue with him

- “I am a foolish old man.” “Damn you, sir. You will try.” Spock ain’t fucking around. Also he picked up a couple of words from McCoy

- “I thought I was going to die.” “Not possible, you were never alone.” Throw me out an airlock I need some air

- SORRY the immediate moment after that was SO MUCH WORSE “Please, captain. Not in front of the Klingons.” THEY WERE ABOUT TO MAKE OUT SLOPPY

- “Cosmic thoughts, gentlemen?” “We were speculating. Is god really out there?” They were having a nice quiet conversation and it’s a shame they didn’t show it :(

- KIRK TALKING ABOUT SAM??? Oh no he was implying it was Spock

- this ending- I’m not okay.

Unfortunately I really enjoyed this one. William Shatner made a movie that was so shippy and was oblivious to it the entire time.

I know it took a really long time for me to post this one because I wanted to watch undiscovered country first, I haven’t watched it yet but I felt I needed to finally edit and post this one. I hope you enjoyed my silly little thoughts.

Captain Kirk fluff alphabet

A = Attractive (What do they find attractive about the other?)

Oh boy does he have a helluva time with that question if you actually ask it. The answer is definitely your hips/lower waist, if you have love handles all the better, he loves to love the love handles. Seriously pulls you in by the waist all the time, for kisses, hugs, snuggles, everything.

B = Baby (Do they want a family? Why/Why not?)

Not right now, he wants to give his potential children a normal life, and by that he means one that doesn’t put them in danger out in space. But at the end of the five year mission, you bet your buttons he wants mini hims and yous running around. Of course if you don’t want children it’s not a deal breaker for him, but then he does want a pet instead.

C = Cuddle (How do they cuddle?)

Basically nonstop. He doesn’t care if there are people around, he likes knowing that you’re there and seeing you just isn’t the same as feeling you near. If you sit in his lap he’ll die, you can’t leave now. If one of you can’t sleep, then you end up in each other’s quarters, curled up together and sleeping harder than anyone knew was possible. When you’re in bed Jim really loves when you put your head on his chest, he likes that he can still see you, he also likes that it gives him the opportunity to rub your back or play with your hair.

D = Dates (What are dates with them like?)

You’re both busy people so you have dinner together every night just to guarantee to get to see each other, so he longer really considers dinner a date. Dinner would definitely be involved still, it just isn’t the main event. If you’re on shore leave he would find a concert that he thinks you would enjoy and depending on late the show is he’ll either take you to dinner before or after.

E = Everything (You are my ____ (e.g. my life, my world…))

It feels kind of cheesy, but you’re his Universe. It was bound to happen, I mean the man absolutely adores you AND you guys are in outer space, it was gonna happen. At first it surprises you a bit because he’s not much of a “you’re my ___” kinda guy for the most part, but you quickly come to love it.

F = Feelings (When did they know they were in love?)

Back in the academy when he was having an absolute nervous breakdown. He was a mess, a wreck, shaking and babbling total nonsense. It was caused by the anxiety of final exams, Jim didn’t think himself at all prepared. And you seeing a grown man having a breakdown, what did you do? You plopped down right next to him and gave him a hug, told him that he was gonna do great because you knew him, he was born a Captain. You even offered to help him study. And he didn’t think he could have made bigger heart eyes 😍 at you in that moment… he was wrong the heart eyes have definitely gotten bigger over the years.

G = Gentle (Are they gentle? If so, how?)

Kirk is just a big puppy dog of a man. He would never intentionally hurt you and if he ever did he might die inside. He’s so careful it’s kind of ridiculous. He’s still Jim, he’ll still crack jokes and flirt (not just with you), but if he ever finds out that bothers you when he makes flirty comments to others, then it all comes to a crashing halt. This man will not stand for hurting you or your feelings in any way, shape, or form.

H = Hands (How do they like to hold hands?)

Holding hands is nice, but he probably only holds hands at more formal events or if you’re uncomfortable with more contact than that in public. Jim likes to be touching you as much as possible, he’s more of an arm-over-your-shoulder kinda guy. He just hates being alone and loves physical affection, please love him 😫🥰😩

I = Impression (What was their first impression?)

Jim’s first impression of you isn’t bad, but it’s maybe not what you would hope your first meeting with anyone would be. You were talking to some and weren’t looking where you were going, you tripped over a tree root. Boy, are you lucky he was there and has such quick reflexes, otherwise you would have absolutely bit it. So his first impression is that you need just a little bit of protecting and he was willing to be the one to do it. Looking back, Kirk thinks that he was actually in love with you right from the moment you landed in his arms.

J = Jealousy (Do they get jealous?)

Both yes and no. Jim doesn’t at all care what you say, flirt all you like, but it’s when touching is involved that he gets a little nervous. If someone’s hand lingers too long he might swing by and give you just a little kiss on the cheek. If you hug someone (even though he completely understands that sometimes people just need hugs) he will cling to you for the rest of the day. Someone else making you laugh will do the trick too, it’s not “hey that’s not allowed to happen” type of jealous, it’s “gee I wish that was me making you laugh” kind of jealous because he loves hearing laugh, and it makes him so friggin happy to know that he got to make you laugh.

K = Kiss (How do they kiss? Who initiated the first kiss?)

Jim just loves kissing you, period. But he really really loves to kiss the top of your head because it usually requires a hug to get there. He also loves to kiss your jaw, just little butterfly 🦋kisses because if you kisses light enough it elicits giggles from you! Your first kiss on the lips was an accident, you both happened to go to kiss each other on the cheek at the same time. In the general though, the first kiss was initiated by you. Jim had just given you a really fancy copy of your favourite book, and you got so excited that you kissed his cheek and gave him a hug. It was a very difficult moment for him because you weren’t together yet, but it was after he had realised his feelings for you.

L = Love (Who says ‘I love you’ first?)

Jim does, this is actually when you realise you have feelings for him. He had just gotten the scores on his final exams back, he aced them!!! He ran to your dorm with his PADD in hand and the scores pulled up. He didn’t even knock, he dashed right and picked you up. “I love you!!! You’re the best!!!! I passed all of my exams! I couldn’t have done it without you” he swings you around before finally calming down enough to put you down and show you his actual scores.

M = Memory (What’s their favourite memory together?)

If you couldn’t already tell he’s big on physical affection and snuggles 🥰 so his favourite memory is definitely the first time you two cuddled. You were both exhausted on the couch and watching a movie in his dorm and the cuddling just kind of happened.

N = Nickel (Do they spoil? Do they buy the person they love everything?)

Jim would love to if that’s what you want, but he himself is really a quality time kinda guy, like sure he’ll buy you pretty much whatever you want, but he really really really wants to cuddle and watch a movie! Like pretty please 🥺 snuggle the baby.

O = Orange (What colour reminds them of their other half?)

It’s warm brown. It reminds Jim of a teddy bear 🧸 and you are his teddy bear, he snuggles you to relax and to quell any anxieties he may have. You’re his anchor and his teddy bear in the best way possible. Warm and cozy brown

P = Pet names (What pet names do they use?)

It’s not super creative, but he won’t change his mind, Sweetheart and Sweetie are his favourites for you. He can’t help it if they happen to be true, you’re the sweetest person he knows and he wants you to know it!

Q = Quaint (What is their favourite non-modern thing?)

Cabins in the woods. He loves the fireplace. Cabins are the most perfect place to snuggle in. If you stay in a cabin together, you will be alone even less often than usual. He will drag you to the couch to cuddle under a blanket in front of the fire.

R = Rainy Day (What do they like to do on a rainy day?)

It’s not even a question, you aren’t leaving bed. He will hold you hostage for snuggles while you listen to the rain. If it’s cold he won’t turn on the heat either, we all know that body heat is the best way to warm up. 😢🥰

S = Sad (How do they cheer themselves/others up?)

Hugs. If you look upset he will find you later so he doesn’t embarrass you in front of others. When he finds you, he won’t even ask, he knows you'll tell him what’s up when you’re ready. He engulfs you in the biggest bear hug and won’t let go until you do. If he’s upset he’s probably gonna want to snuggle with you and put his head on your chest so he can listen to your heart beat, please please run your fingers through his hair❤️‍🔥, he will be eternally grateful.

T = Talking (What do they like to talk about?)

He’s a bit more of a listener, he could listen to your voice for ages. But when it is his turn to talk, he likes to tell jokes and funny stories because like I said before, he loves making you laugh. If you also like to hear him talk though, he will tangentially talk about anything to make you happy, it’s stream of consciousness, anything and nothing.

U = Unencumbered (What helps them relax?)

Taking naps, naps are his remedy for basically everything, but it only works if it’s a nap with you. He must have snuggles, otherwise he’ll be left to stew in whatever’s worrying him. Also if you thought his snuggling was aggressive before, he’s got in a vice once he falls asleep, will.not.let.go

V = Vaunt (What do they like to show off? What are they proud of?)

Honestly? He’s not much of a show off, but he loves to show off for you. It’s dancing he loves to learn new and fancy dance moves just to impress you. McCoy once caught Kirk practicing a move that required a partner and got himself roped into helping Jim practice. This man dips and twirls you like no one else! 🩷❤️🩷

W = Wedding (When, how, where do they propose?)

You'll have been together for quite awhile before Jim proposes. He just wants to be 1000% certain that marriage is what you want too. It doesn’t need to be fancy or extravagant, but it does need to be meaningful. If Jim really gets the feeling that you do want to marry him then he’ll wait until you’re both back on Earth. He’ll take you back to the academy under the guise that he’s to be a guest speaker. On the way up to the main campus though, he would pretend he dropped something right in front of the same tree root you had tripped over. He got down on one knee and pulled out a ring. “Yes!! Oh my god YES” you would yell before he could start “can I say a few things first, Sweetheart?” Of course you said yes again, but it was difficult because now you’re crying. “I know you’re the one who tripped here so long ago, but I was the one who fell. I didn’t know it then, but when I caught you it was the best thing to ever happen to me” you’re absolutely sobbing now “That- that was ssso cheesy, but I’m still saying yes” you cried.

X = Xylophone (What’s their song?)

Dancing in the Dark by Bruce Springsteen. He loves it because it’s a relatively chill rock song. He also has definitely at some point or another brought you to his quarters, turned out a majority of the lights and played this song to dance with you to. After the first time he does it, turning out the lights and dancing becomes a really good way for both of you to relax.

Y = Yes (Do they ever think of getting married/proposing?)

All the time, he wants nothing more than to spend the rest of his life with you. If you don’t want to get married that’s fine too, but he still wants to spend the rest of your lives together. You’re his Universe and he can’t imagine a future that doesn’t have you in it.

Z = Zebra (If they wanted a pet, what would they get?)

A dog, any kind of dog, but a really big one. He would love to wrestle with a big dog (in a loving way). And he would run with that dog too, like you might never see him again if it weren’t for the fact that the dog would get hungry and thirsty eventually. He would love that floofer to bits.

Space Seed

So I met Khan (not the Benedict Cumberbatch whitewashed version)! The episode was good, lots of good dialogue, a solid plot and an uncertain ending (kofkof uncertain for them).

The toxic masculinity vibes were off the charts though:

First, I'm not commenting on McGivers instantly falling for the hyper masculine guy, accepting his abusive behaviour and choosing to stay with him; because if I do, I'll get mad. But you know, it's terrible and I hate it.

Then the admiration for Khan, "the best and most dangerous of the tyrants" expressed by Scotty, Bones and Jim. Sigh. Of course it's all three of them, the only one out being Spock ("Illogical"). We're supposed to take away that it's because he doesn't feel the human/manly appeal of courage, ambition, greatness or whatever. Honestly not even IC? (sorry but I don't want to picture Jim and Bones as real life fans of Napoleon lmao they are the worst)

SPOCK: Gentlemen, this romanticism about a ruthless dictator is KIRK: Mister Spock, we humans have a streak of barbarism in us. Appalling, but there, nevertheless. SCOTT: There were no massacres under his rule. SPOCK: And as little freedom. MCCOY: No wars until he was attacked. SPOCK: Gentlemen.

You tell them Spock!

MCCOY: Well, either choke me or cut my throat. Make up your mind.

MCCOY: Well, there aren't any regulations against romance, Jim.

Duly noted!

Jim thinking he and the bridge crew were dying and recommending commendations in his log? Him being in the decompression chamber being murdered? I was on the verge of tears then

A Taste of Armageddon

Wow the plot's heavy but powerful. The whole episode is dark but hopeful ending! (plus pissed off Jim is v sexy)

Death, destruction, disease, horror. That's what war is all about, Anan. That's what makes it a thing to be avoided. You've made it neat and painless. So neat and painless, you've had no reason to stop it. And you've had it for five hundred years. 

I've given you back the horrors of war. 

Ending a 500-year war is just one of many things Captain Kirk does!

And of course:

SPOCK: Captain, you almost make me believe in luck. KIRK: Why, Mister Spock, you almost make me believe in miracles.

Sorry it took me a minute to answer this, my last couple of days were busy busy!! Thank you so very very much for the ask!

24. What should have happened in Star Trek, but didn't? 🎷

In my honest opinion (aside from Kirk, McCoy, and Spock getting together at some point, especially by the end of the 5th movie) I genuinely think closure from a few things that happened in the series needed to happen but never did. Like Bones practically resigning to die and actively putting his life on the line and worrying Jim (and Spock) to the point of near breaking, just to be like "oh shucks, another day on the Enterprise!" by the end of it with us not seeing any real emotional closure. Or the times when Jim and Spock saw some seriously fucked up shit™️ and they were mega affected during the episode, but then it's never brought up again. The episodic nature of the show prevented a lot of major closure sure, but even just a tiny bit more than what we got, I feel, is something that would have fully benefitted everything, especially later episodes and then the plots in the movies.

Further closure and information on Jim's time on Tarsus would also be hugely helpful and never happened, and I feel that is part of this contextually as well!

I'm seriously a die-hard McSpirk shipper! I love the other branch ships I've come across: Spirk (of course), Spones, and recently I discovered Scones and I adore the grumpy drunk men dynamic, but I will always fall back to my little thruple that are so made to fit together like puzzle pieces for the heart mind and soul. I could prattle on about their whole dynamic for hours literally 💜

headcanon. the conversation with jim in 2.6

Do I ever shut up? No. I have to break down the Sam and Jim conversation in 2.6 because I cannot stop thinking about it every second of the day.

(And before I start, the amount of RESPECT I have for these two actors? They made each of these lines mean so much that is not really on paper. I believed that they were brothers with all this baggage, and I appreciate that so much.)

JIM: So, what’s new and exciting in the world of xenoanthropology? SAM: Literally everything in xenoanthropology is new and exciting. 

I think it’s pretty clear that Jim doesn’t really want to hear an answer, and Sam knows it. As is made clear later in the conversation, Jim seems to lack respect for what Sam does. Meanwhile, Sam loves his job so much that it seems to him that it should be OBVIOUS that xenoanthropology is the coolest thing ever, and why doesn’t Da– I mean Jim see that?

SAM: But instead of giving you a long answer you don’t actually care about, why don’t we skip to your news? JIM: Wow. Sensing some hostility there, Sam.

No argument from Jim about caring about Sam’s answer, but also. Sam is so intensely jealous about Jim’s early promotion that he can’t even be chill a little bit about it, god. He’s been obsessing since he found out, you KNOW he has.

SAM: Not at all. Congrats, Jim. First officer of the Farragut. JIM: Well, not for another few months. I still have to train my replacement. SAM: Still, it’s quite an achievement.  JIM: Thank you.

LIke at the end of the episode, I think Sam is trying to get Jim to say what he wants to say first. He doesn’t exactly want to start an argument with Jim (although he WILL) but he also can’t let things go if he can’t convince Jim to acknowledge an issue before Sam says it outright.

SAM: And youngest first officer in the whole fleet. Youngest first officer ever, actually. I don’t suppose you remember who held the record before you? JIM: Ah, okay. That’s what this is.

To me, Jim’s response supports the idea that Sam tries to hint his way into an argument a conversation, then gives up and just says what he thinks Jim is doing wrong. 

SAM: It was George Kirk Sr. First officer of the Kelvin.

There are LAYERS here. First, he’s supplanting their father, and he did it on purpose (as Jim basically admits later). Second, he’s zipping past Sam career-wise. Third, he’s following in their father’s footsteps in a way that Sam never will, and (worse) never could.

JIM: Dad gave you his first name, even if you choose not to use it, so I have to do something to keep up.

Jim, bless your heart, but this is such bullshit and you know it. I’ve already posted about my take on why Sam uses his middle name, but… Jim is so obviously the favorite, and Sam only got the name because he was born first.

SAM: You’re making me look… JIM: Like what? Sam, what does my ambition have to do with you?

(This is where I start screaming.) It is unfair for Sam to be upset with Jim for running up the ranks. It is. But also Jim’s response is so painful. I don’t think Sam has ambition the way that Jim does (or their father did). He wants to accomplish things and be there for people, but rank only matters to him because it matters to their father and it matters to Jim. Regardless of what Jim meant when he said it, I know Sam heard it as “if you tried harder, Dad would love you more.”

SAM: Dad has a very old-fashioned idea of what a successful career looks like, what a fulfilling life looks like, and it just so happens it looks a lot like you.

(More screaming.) He calls their dad “old-fashioned” but instead of taking that as “he doesn’t quite get me and how I live my life, but that’s okay” it’s “I can’t be as good as Jim in our father’s eyes.”

JIM: Well, if you’re so worried about impressing Dad, then why are you wallowing in a science lab? SAM: Wallowing? Seriously?

(SCREAMING.) Just… open disrespect for what Sam does. It hurts me. And for the record, this is the part where Sam fully stops hiding how upset he is behind a smile.

JIM: Records are made to be broken. I put in some legwork to beat this one. So what? 

(JIMOTHY TIMTAM KIRK STOP THAT RIGHT NOW) “I put in the legwork” refers back to the concept that, if Sam just worked harder, he could be where Jim is so why is he whining? And to be real and to be honest, I do not think that Jim really believes that. I think he knows he’s special. Yes, he worked hard, but also he is special in a way that Sam is not.

JIM: We can make the old man proud in our own ways. SAM: Or. Not at all.

(I am deceased.) After everything, Jim’s line feels really disingenuous. I don’t think he means it (since he seems very confused when Sam walks away), but after not being interested in what Sam’s been doing at his job, the “first name” line, and “wallowing in a lab”... They must both know that their father might say he’s proud of Sam too, but Jim is the one he’ll bring up to people, you know?

Also, Sam’s “not at all” punched me directly in the face and i’m suing dan jeannotte for his acting and face.

such a GOOD episode

(this time I’m leaving all my feelings and thoughts as they occurred as I went through the episode, so it’s a mess and I mention things that the episode explains later. I mean these posts are pretty much just for me anyway)

Kirk/La’an in the preview!!! why are you teasing me so?????? (also the parallels in the preview between Kirk/La’an and Spock/Chapel.... if you’re experimenting with Spock/Chapel, I want you to experiment with Kirk/La’an, ok? I think that sometimes people misunderstand, because I don’t expect or even want Kirk and La’an to live happily until Kirk’s 60 and dies, I just want them to give them a chance... for a year or two (which is entirely plausible because there are years before Kirk gets the Enterprise where we don’t know anything about a girlfriend), it’s about the journey, not the endgame - and I feel like people are always focused on endgame. After ep 3, I made a mistake and looked around the fandom and the amount of people who would just be like doomed doomed doomed is annoying. And like, so what? I know people do this with Spock/Chapel too, even though with them it’s way more about glee than anything else, and it’s also pretty annoying)

- omg thank you for 1. Sam being jealous 2. the brothers not having a loving buddy buddy relationship 3. love seeing that Jim’s biases against soft sciences are actually still very much present

considering that Sam has a family, a wife and kids, I wonder if Kirk Sr. doesn’t consider that enough... and that’s why Jim is always going after career because that’s what his father instilled in him. = to be a man, you’ve got to be successful, you’ve got to aim high, you’ve got to be the best. And so Jim goes through that life while yearning for a home and family... and eventually, he just gets an empty house.

- I really like these types of episodes where we can see everyone. This is already so much better than last week’s episode

- Spock and Chapel do play chess together. Yay :D

- oh, wow, it’s gonna be Chapel who ends it? (just me theorizing, because she’s like pulling back now :/) That... hmmmm, will make tos!Chapel look worse. Please, handle the relationship with care or officially make SNW a different timeline where stuff in TOS happens differently (I know ep 3 did that, but also a lot of people are sooooo stubborn against it, like, ok, they changed the years, but it doesn’t mean that what happened in the episodes changed. But... anyway, handle it with care and don’t make tos!Chapel look bad because she’d still be pining even though it’d be her fault that the relationship ended. I mean we’ll see how it goes...) Also LMAO at Spock actually being extra invested. He really wants this to work, and Chapel is probably going to break his heart? (even though that is not what TOS implies but could be interesting. I’d actually prefer if we could get them having a relationship together, but... yeah)

love how Kirk implied that Spock might be losing against Chapel in chess lol (Kirk was like, ok, I guess Vulcans are good at chess BUT they’re also easily distracted. Noted.)

- why can’t all episodes just have everyone interacting, so we can learn more about their dynamic?

- uhmmm, Pike, you shouldn’t be your crew’s friend......... (I kind of miss the lack of proper professionalism like it was in TOS. I know, I know, different times, but...)

- is Kirk literally going to meet everyone from his future crew in this episode? (we’re missing Chapel and Spock atm, even though he already saw them playing chess)

- and as I was just wondering where is La’an since it’s a security job, she appeared. Good. Would be stupid if they kept her away from an episode with Kirk (can they meet pls?)

- why is everyone calling Kirk “James”??? (do the writers have some fanfics wishes for Uhura to do that or what? Wouldn’t an ensign call her superior officer by the title? Now, what’s missing is Kirk calling her “Nyota”)

1. just the way he opens up to her because he doesn’t want her to think he’s one to chase every pretty skirt

2. Kirk not truly growing up on Earth but jumping from an outpost to an outpost, from a planet to a planet is my long time headcanon. (So I’m gonna take it and use it so much.) Kirk not really growing up with a father around as well. (which might also mean that Kirk’s parents’ relationship might not be ideal, but we’ll see. So much validation in this little scene. Gonna probably be really annoying about it later)

it must still be hard for La’an, but tiny steps

- thanks for giving me good scenes with Una in this episode (but I still have the same problem when it comes to the relationships. They showed Una and Hemmer interacting once...)

- and when I thought they would ignore Spock, they had to insert him in lol At least, that’s out of the way, and now they can just exist while having adventures with other people. I like it was together with Uhura and that Uhura introduced them and that it was completely casual, but omg please stop with Spock needing to clean dishes after Sam Kirk. 

McCoy: So, Jim, how did you and Spock meet? Kirk: He came to my table when I was talking with Uhura to clean a glass after Sam. Can you believe that? Who does that in a bar?

(I kind of entertained the thought that “meet James Kirk” was about Spock (or rather it was literally the first thought when hearing the line), just edited in that way in the trailer, and... I was right lol)

aaaand is Pike like going to loose the Fleet Captain badge in the next episode? Is that really what will happen? Temporary promotion for one single mission. Okay. Sounds... like a good writing (I think it’d be better to just ignore The Menagerie than do this... are you gonna not let them meet after this or what?)

anyway, such a good episode, and I’m actually so glad that they left Spock out, because people would probably just talk about that and wouldn’t focus on Uhura, and she deserves it so much. (the fact that startrek.com’s promo pic about the episode is Kirk and Spock is so insulting - it was like three seconds)

I kinda like that it felt like Kirk wasn’t actually sure about his “charm and jokes”, that he feels like he needs to use them, but they’re not really him, and it will take him years to grow comfortable with them. 

Thank you for making him so serious. And thank you for making him immediately open up to La’an (and La’an knowing what to say back, so they kind of connected through understanding) T_T 

I loved Kirk and Uhura together. Now, Mirror Mirror has so much background when it comes to Kirk and Uhura. Love it.

Now, since Pike was already randomly promoted, I wonder if we’ll still see Kirk or if this was his last episode in this season. They got everything out of the way. And tbh two episodes are enough lol

Next ep is the crossover (and he’s not in that one). Then I suppose it might be some M’Benga and Chapel and PTSD from the war episode (because I feel like that still needs to come up again), the 9th episode is ????, and then it’s the finale, which imho might have Batel (unless that’s 8 - you know, there’s a scene in the trailer where she is on some planet and some ship is attacking), so... Kirk isn’t really needed tbh

well, we’ll see

anyway, I was so worried about this episode, and I’m so happy they didn’t disappoint me T_T (doesn’t mean I’ll start trusting them though, but I got so much of my headcanon and even expectations validated. I’m so happy. I’m gonna be so annoying with all this Kirk info)

I mean, SNW just does that, doing what I expect (even though sometimes in a slightly different way), but it has to end one day...

Realizing that Amok Time, from T'Pring's perspective, is basically the equivalent of a Vulcan Hallmark Movie, where a holiday (Pon Farr) makes our hero realize she wants hometown boy Stonn and a simple (Vulcan) life instead of big-city (space) boyfriend Spock, and it all comes to a head in an embarrassing misunderstanding in front of her family, is certainly making me feel some kind of way

been having many thoughts about my child. i did a little section for tidbits in his intro but i decided to add onto it because no thoughts just the red ear slider turtle boy.

he gave himself his middle name. leo likes space and space media. he felt naming himself after jim kirk would be a cool move.

he has vitiligo around his eyes in the same pattern red-eared slider turtles do. would be in the same place the red is here. 

he is gay !! but he doesn’t know it yet … it’s a little self discovery journey he’ll have here in elias. 

he doesn’t know when his actual birthday is. splinter just assigned them random days.

he does have medical trauma from his days of being experimented on. he just blocks it out really well. the fact that he’s the medic of the gang is ironic. he can help others with ease but the moment someone tries to help him in that sense or he’s taken to a doctors office he freaks out.

the turtle transformation is painful so now leo will only transform if he absolutely has to … or if he needs to win a dance competition or something because he’ll do whatever it takes to win. 

he loves glam rock. if he could have background music when he fights rock you like a hurricane would be playing thank you !!

has heterochromia ( blue and brown ) from mutations. when in turtle form his eyes turn blue. in turtle form his red slider marking are in fact red and not pigmentations. this translates to lorena as well. 

theatre kid. ( derogatory ). will take karaoke night very seriously and can sing very well. ( x )

as a kid he was afraid of donnie’s softshell getting seriously injured, so he started researching how to heal softshell injuries along the way he decided to learn more medical stuff just in case. 

banned from asking splinter questions about their origins after leo asked an innocent question that revealed splinter didn’t actually know how old they were. 

speaking of his actual birthday is august 14th. leo is indeed a leo. 

cannot do math for the life of him.

 got scolded a lot more than the others as a kid; it’s why he’s so hard on himself and doesn’t take criticism lightly.

has really great taste in men visually but literally always misses the glaring red flags.

has an extremely flirty personality but when speaking to someone he actually finds attractive my man has no game. cannot pull whatsoever. his brothers are better at flirting at he hates it thanks !

called people ‘babe’ ironically at first, but now he can’t stop.

he sunbathes and tries to convince the others to come with him 

ate a frog for $5 once. purposely freaked mikey out with it. 

he likes nonverbal communication a lot and prefers it when he’s in a mood 

when it gets super cold he and donnie bundle up for what donnie calls “The Brumation Period” and leo calls “The Super Nap” and they just sleep on the couch together for like three straight days

once asked mikey to doodle on him when they were younger and kept his favorite drawing in his pocket once he found out what a tattoo was and plans to get it .. you know when he’s a real person in the eyes of big brother.

would never admit it but watching horror movies gives him nightmares sometimes and he has to hang in raphs room when he can’t sleep. whenever he can’t sleep you can find him in raph’s room tbh. he feels safer in there because he knows raph will keep him safe.

leo has a little bag filled with medical supplies. takes his role as the group’s medic seriously. 

insomnia due to mutation complications. his slider sleeping requirement and human sleeping requirements did not mesh too well. 

fluent in spanish and has spanish nicknames / pet names for literally everyone. 

tw. child experimentation: he and donnie are ‘twins’, loving dubbed the disaster twins. when they were being experimented on the two shared a cage. experiencing the trauma they did together left them ridiculously co-dependant. one is never seen without the other. it might be a problem but it’s a problem they don’t want to address. 

has a small fear of heights after he got dropped from a roof. he almost died and didn’t realize he was in actual danger until raph yelled at him. 

listens to 2000s pop RELIGIOUSLY. britney spears, katy perry, rihanna, kesha, miley cyrus, etc, etc, etc.

big fan of magic. he’s tried to impress his brothers by showing them a few magic tricks. he actually works very hard so they’ll think he’s cool.

he’s a biter. he bites people affectionately, not hard but just a little chomp. he didn’t a lot when he was younger now not as much. maybe when he’s feeling really affectionate. 

does not believe in ghosts. will listen to his brother’s ramblings ( if they believe ) but always reminds them that ghosts aren’t real. 

he’s the fastest of his siblings. he’s mastered keeping his movements light and quick. he might not have the fastest reaction time out of all his siblings but he’s the first one to catch a baseball if you threw one a the group. leo might not be able to deliver hard hits like his brothers can, but he makes up for it by using his speed, portals and a plan to get the upper hand in a fight. 

he’s not a hard hitter so much as he manipulates objects to hit hard for him, usually with the help of his portals. 

he can easily adapt in a fight. he may not expect the unexpected but he can work with it and play it off thanks to his confidence. he can be so caught up in himself and his goals to win. whatever he’s doing that he ends up with tunnel vision in the middle of a battle. 

leo has a win at all costs attitude when fighting. he will do whatever it takes to come out the other side with bragging rights, whether he’s earned those rights or not. 

humor is his coping mechanism. he used to make the others laugh when they were younger and being experimented on to try to cheer them up or distract them. if he’s laughing whatever's happening can’t be that bad or it won’t feel as real if he doesn’t acknowledge it. so he refuses to take situations seriously. leo also jokes to overcompensate for his insecurities, a fear of being average, and his perfectionism. knowing that helps you see that he does the same thing while fighting.

great strategist. he might not always be the one that makes a plan but he’s usually the one to bring ideas into action. 

he can be just as intelligent as donnie but he’s street smart instead of book smart. 

he feels like he’s nothing without his brothers because of that, he sometimes shows off as much as possible in a fight in order to earn glory and praise that could separate him from any other fighter. 

he doesn’t think he’s a good leader and does everything in his power to prove to his brothers that he isn’t a good leader. lot of self sabotage in hope raph will be leader again. 

very self-sacrificing. is willing to put himself in danger for the safety and well being of others. it’s not that he wants to die but leo’s very careless with his life. if he dies he dies. it goes back into leo thinking he needs his brothers more than they need him so he’s willing to throw himself into the line of fire if it means they get a chance at survival. he feels most people in his life don’t need him as much as he needs them. he took the whole it’s not about me thing a little too literally 

he never screams whenever he wakes up from a nightmare, so it’s difficult for someone to tell he’s even having one. before he wakes up, he just curls into himself, clutches his blankets close, and wakes up sweaty and shaking. even after awhile they never fully go away. 

in the future he loses his right arm while saving donnie. ( let’s give it up for the self-sacrificing baby !! ) once donnie was done being pissed at leo for almost dying ( let’s be honest they were all upset with him ), his brother joked it was karma for when donnie saved leo from shredder during the fight that sent them to elias. leo yelled at him for at least an hour saying he got to keep his arm. 

took literal months to convince him to go to therapy because ‘what if the healthy coping mechanisms make me lose my swag’ after a while he talks to his therapist like they’re his best friend. strolls in like he owns the place sunglasses and all.

harbors a lot of resentment towards his younger self. it fucks him up on the daily when lorena acts exactly like how he did when she was his age. he has to constantly remind himself that they’re two different people and lorena is not him, well, not fully. she’s her own person and deserves to be. 

when it came to saving aerwyn, leo was absolutely ready to take her in because he saw himself in her in that moment. had splinter not taken in him and his brothers, leo knows they would have been used for evil. their lives would have been worse than what they were already given which was pretty damn rough. the thought of the little girl falling into that kind of trap solidified her being adopted.

he becomes the leo we know from most other iterations, the mature traditional leader, in the future. he’s a little stricter in the future but mostly when it comes to training the next generation of hamatos. honestly the tired old man who’s a father / uncle figure to too many kids. if you’re wondering yeah, master leonardo has gray hairs and he does indeed dye it. refuses to gray first he’s too hot for this.

     Eyes stinging my head swayed a touch before settling against the sturdy structure of  Bones' shoulder as we waited for the familiar end of class. Honestly we both should be done with classes but If I wanted to make the last leap to being bridge crew or med-bay crew, I needed a few more specialized classes. I was not about to mess that up just to get a few extra hours of sleep. Between sheep dogging my brother out of trouble, studying alone, studying with Bones and more I was always running on less than fumes these days so When the trilling hit my ears relief was immediate. Forcing my head off of my best friend's shoulder I began gathering my things, accepting Bones' helping hand as we hurried from class after my far too excited brother.

     "So will you two do it for me?" I scrunched up my eyebrows in confusion, tossed bones a look of confusion. What had I missed whilst dozing through the last twenty minutes of class?

     "I have no interest and Nell wasn't paying attention."

     "I didn't ask if you have interest and if Nell was paying attention. I asked if you two would do it?" Shuffling ahead, I turned to walk backwards to get a better view of both men's faces.

     "I'm about to ask you an obvious question: Why bother?"

     "Because I failed the test twice." I couldn’t help it: I laughed, shoulders shaking with the force of it at the exasperation settling like a second mask over Bones features and the subtle annoyance on Jim’s. Jim wasn’t used to failing and with this piece of information I finally was beginning to understand what he was going on about. The Kobayashi Maru- a test designed to be failed.

     "That's what this is about. Jim, no one passes that damn test."

     "and he's determined to make it three. We've all failed it-everyone has, and that's the point! No one goes back for seconds, let alone thirds- it's not like you need to pass it to graduate." Nodding in agreement, I pointed at Bones. He was often more right than the both of us. Part of me wondered if that was just his wisdom in the five years he had on us or if it was just his natural understanding of the world.

     "Leo's right Jim. If it was required to graduate there are plenty of people who would have dropped out."

     "So Bones, Nell... why do they make us take it?"

     "He told you to stop calling him that Jim, and it's a learning experience to tell us all that no matter what we do we can't save everyone."

     "You two are the greatest really- thank you. Bones, Eleanor." This time both of us groaned in annoyed distaste.

     "You'd better study for it this time."

     "Oh, no- Bones- I gotta date." Keeping in step with my two favorite men, I kicked my brother's shin.

     "A date, really James."

     "Listen, as smart as you are, which ain't much, if you don't prepa-"

     "Stop worrying you two, You have no idea how prepared i'm gonna be- no idea." With a kick to his own to my shin Jim raced off.

     "Seriously, Stop calling me Bones!" Snickered, I faintly heard the beginnings of his mutter under his breath. With a kiss to his check I turned to walk away. I had my own tests to study for and unlike my brother I wouldn’t do it in bed with another life form hoping they would whisper all the answers in my ear. Pausing, I turned back once more to my best friend trying to ignore the flush that coated my cheeks every time we were alone together.

     "Don't worry Leo, you'll come to love it. Though I swear to god if you start calling Eleanor I'll chop off your manly bits." With a wink I skipped away.

     "Leonard McCoy you better have a good reason for pulling me away my studying for McChalskey’s midterm or so help me god I will make good on my threat from earlier." I snapped, shoving through the door of the McCoy-Kirk dorm with a frown in place. Leonard hopped out of the way, clearly not having expected for my response to be so aggressive, but i hadn’t been lying earlier, I had test after test to take because I was taking Xenolinguistics and Medical classes this term and If I wanted to pass them I needed to make sure I studied. I glanced at his face to see he was grinning good natured.

     "Which threat Nelly, the one about stealing your food or the one about calling you Eleanor?"

     "Both, at the same time. Now out with it, why'd you call me." Leonard didn't even give me time to blink before I was being tossed over his shoulder and deposited on one of the fluffy beds set in the main part of their housing area. The bed itself was neat and clutter free, all the clutter falling on the nightstand and desk in the form of PADDS and study material which was the first clue presented that it wasn’t my brother's bed I had been chucked on.

     "Your brother won't be back for a while, he called to let me know." Fighting the blush I could feel creeping up my neck, I stared up at Leonard, eyebrow raised.

     "So?"

     "So, that means Darlin', that I'm taking you out to dinner away from the main part of campus to force you to take a study break before you overwork that pretty brain of yours." I whined in disbelief. Of all the times I had wanted him to call me pretty and take me to dinner, I didn’t want it to be because I was overworking myself but because he wanted to.

     "Leo, really. I'm not dressed to be going out and last time I was hit on the entire night and you had to pretend to be my boyfriend to get them to leave me alone. I don't want to deal with that again."  Leonard slipped onto his back on the bed right beside me, laughing a little.

     "I ain't got an issue pretending Darlin', you're gorgeous and I know that when we leave I can shove you into a puddle and the worst that will happen is you'll pull me in right after. So come on, let's enjoy a little time without your brother." Biting my lip, I rolled over and placed a hand on her best friend's chest.

     "You do realize pretending to be with me means you have to kiss me right, right in front of everyone or no one will believe it, correct?" Leonard nodded.

     "Fully aware doll, like I said. You're gorgeous so I ain't got an issue with it. Now are we gonna go or not?" Pulling myself up and onto Leonard's lap, I crossed my arms hoping the look I was giving him was plenty stern. Kissing Leonard, a dream come true. Kissing Leonard because we wanted to keep the freaks away just to turn around and be best friends again tomorrow, not so much.

     "How about no." Leonard snickered, flipping us around so I was the one sprawled on the bed, his larger body hovering over me. I think my brain might have switched off because when he asked again, I nodded yes. I had barely settled back into the intelligent woman I am before he was dragging me by the hand out of the living quarters, tucking his wallet into his pocket as we went. If only he knew the effect he had on me, the feelings I had for him something tells me our entire friendship would be entirely different. And sadly, it might not even exist. His divorce and heartbreak was too fresh. I was content being his friend but that didn’t mean I yearned for more. I would never force that on him though. Better to suffer in silence.

Dinner turned out to be at the cute bar and grill just off of second street, two blocks from the Starfleet campus. Seating was easy as everyone in their right mind was either at home enjoying some down time or back on campus studying. There were a few men lingering about at the bar, beers in their hands bullshitting with whatever and whoever came to sit beside them. They looked the type to assume women owe them something so I prayed we would sit far away from them. 

Thankfully Leonard took the que and sat us six tables away from the bathroom, completely out of view of the bar. The waitress of the night came over right away and upon seeing the ruggedly handsome man before her, completely turned to block me from her view. Not much of a surprise. Anytime I was out with him or my brother it happened, but it was always far more annoying when I was with Len. It was almost painfully obvious that I would never really fit in as anything more than the blonde girl that followed him around like a lost little puppy.

“Thank you for choosing Daisy’s Bar and Grill. My name is Olivia and I’ll be your waitress for the evening. What can I get started for you?”

“I’ll have a bourbon and my lovely companion a strawberry lemonade.” Olivia enthusiastically wrote down the drink order and hurried off, only to turn back around and dump the menus onto the table in front of us. Part of me hoped this was her first week on the job and she’d get fired. I knew it was petty. Our drinks came, mine dropped nearly over in front of me and Len’s drink was nicely handed to him before Olivia took our food order.

“So, how was the studying coming before I dragged you out?”

“Good, I guess. My roommate was probably trying to seduce one of her professors to raise her grade and Nyota- the girl I met in my basic Starfleet classes was working on something. So I thankfully had no distractions. What about you, did you get any studying done or was dragging me out your excuse not to?” The smug bastard didn’t even seem phased or bothered by the question.

“I’ve been studying for the last week Nell, I’m as ready as I’m going to get and so are you. So take a breath and enjoy this before I let Jim taking you out drinking to demonstrate fun again.” Groaning, I dropped my head into my hands. The last time Jim and Len took me out drinking I wasn’t allowed to leave until I’d had at least three drinks and danced twice with each of them. Which was a surprise because usually Len refused to dance with anyone.

“I would love to never have to live through that thanks.”

Food was delivered a little more gracefully than the drinks, and then we lapsed into silence to eat. Len was eating his weight in a tender steak and a side salad, clearly unbothered by the looks Olivia was shooting at him from the wait station. I however was self consciously enjoying the pork chop and garlic potatoes (praying Len wouldn’t have to kiss me because garlic kisses weren’t a top ten good kiss).

The walk back to my dorm was nice and quiet, no need to fill the space with words but part of me wanted to fill it. To tell him that friend “dates” didn’t need to happen, that it was a good way to send mixed signals but there were no signals to mix between us. It was a friendly offer to make sure I didn’t drown the night away under PADDs and study prep and medical terminology. He had never shown a hint of true romantic feelings towards me and saying any of what I was thinking would just cause problems and ruin what we had.

When he kissed my forehead at the door, I could barely muster a smile. Going to bed was a miracle, because at least in my dreams reality was so much easier to change. How I wish I had savored what we had a little more, because my brother was about to set in motion a chain of events that might just make it impossible for our friendship to last- whether through my big mouth or death.

I know it's part of their whole banter thing, but sometimes it goes too far imo.

Spock: on the contrary, Wilkins are particularly sensitive to cold. However, mental discipline allows us to endure many discomforts.

[ID: A comic with the above dialogue. Spock walks in to find a Jim who is entirely bundled in a blanket and furiously protesting the cold. He picks up the still-bundled Jim with an unimpressed sigh and carries him to the bridge, where everyone else is also revealed to be bundled up tightly.

In the addendum, Jim angrily shouts after Spock, asking why he isn’t cold. Spock admits he in fact is but can ignore it, but everyone on the bridge exclaims in surprise and dismay. Jim quickly hugs Spock, who looks taken aback, and everyone else follows suit with loving smiles and hearts floating around them. The Spock We Know From TOS Is Grief Incarnate

You ever think about how the reason Spock is so disdainful of emotions and his humanity in general is probably because he’s grieving?

He’s hurting, a lot. Within the span of less than a decade he:

Loses his sense of linear time and almost his sanity, institutionalizing himself after his first five year mission on Enterprise.

Loses Michael, who was his first and strongest link to human friendship and familial love (aside from his mother). Due to circumstances beyond his control. His visions, his needing Michael, indirectly leads her to fulfilling her destiny, and being forced to leave him behind.

Has a falling out with T’Pring, because she feels he does not value their relationship or his Vulcan heritage enough. Which he internalizes as not being Vulcan enough period. A confirmation of what he already believed.

Has a falling out with Chapel, because she’s in love with the humanity in him which he has come to resent, and cannot be what she wants/thinks him to be. He is not human enough among humans. A confirmation of what he already believed.

He loses Chris, his captain, his best male role model (cuz he’s not getting that from Sarek and his only brother has been in rehab most of his life). Pike, who accepts him as he is and cares about him. Who sacrifices himself because he knows for a fact Spock will go on to do greater things. In doing so, also ends up parting ways with Spock.

He spends 90% of his young adulthood losing people.

Spock’s Vulcan ties reject him, and every human he has ever loved enough to reach out for so far has seriously hurt and/or been hurt by him.

He associates emotion with his humanity (even though Vulcans do feel), and his humanity with the humans that have touched his life.

It hurts to love, love is a human emotion, the logical solution is to further reject my humanity and connection with humans so that I do not feel this pain again.

“I am a Vulcan, there is no pain.”

Is it a wonder that he’s so disdainful of humanity by the time we see in in TOS? Not just from human vs Vulcan prejudices (because damn they hostile to each other constantly), but because being condescending and rude and aloof keeps people from reaching out to him or finding him approachable. If you think about it, that persona, the one we don’t see formed yet in SNW, is a deliberate product of all of that.

Logically, if you don’t want friends, if you don’t want the inevitable pain that love causes, the most direct course of action is to project a persona that people don’t want to be friends with. Evidence suggests that bad things happen to the people who accept him as he is. The last thing he wants is to be loved and to be hurt by another human, another person, right now. Not after what happened to Michael, to Hemmer, to Chris.

You know the two people aboard who immediately see through that and start chipping away at the ice from the moment they meet him?

Jim and Bones

“Listen closely little brother, this is the last advice I’ll ever be able to give you. Find the person that seems farthest from you, reach for them.”

He gets along with Kirk so incredibly, reality bendingly well. It scares Spock! He keeps trying to avoid it but Jim has him pinned and isn’t going to let him go. “When I feel friendship for you I am ashamed” goes beyond the inherent embarrassment of a Vulcan feeling an emotion, it’s the shame of getting attached and believing whole heartedly that it will end in suffering. So much so that he leaves and attempts Kolinahr rather than chance that bond deepening further! Which ultimately fails because, while Chris and Michael both loved and needed Spock, not nearly the same way, the same soul wrenching intensity, that Jim needs him. It’s the stuff that myth is made from.

And Bones, like the saw for which he’s nicknamed, makes it his business to cut through Spock’s bullshit. He forces Spock to acknowledge his humanity, that well of love and of pain and loneliness, where Spock would otherwise deny it. Bones sees through the Vulcan-isms that Spock is hiding behind and sees the truth, a truth so obvious to him and foreign to Spock that it actively pisses him off. Bones confronts, challenges, goads, dares Spock to feel. Bones accuses Spock of being so far gone he can’t feel, just to make Spock prove him wrong. He knows what he’s doing and it’s working. Which is what makes them as inseparable as Jim and Spock, rather than two coworkers who hurl casual insults to each other. Bones KNOWS him, and in his own way needs him for the same confrontational nature he dishes out.

Neither of them could get Spock to heal on their own. Jim isn’t confrontational enough, and Bones is too prickly. Which is one of the many, many reasons the Triumvirate is such a powerful trio.

Love is going to hurt, it always does, but the love is always, always more important than the pain of losing it. Where Nyota’s character arc begins, is where Spock’s ends.

It’s so funny to me when straight people are like “there is no way Kirk and Spock could have been in love/married, they would have no reason to hide it!” And I’m like... yeah in-universe sure but did it ever occur to you that these episodes/movies were um... not made in the 23rd century? In the 60s, homosexuality was a mental illness. It could completely destroy your life. It was illegal to be gay in the 70s and 80s in many places in the US. This is the environment in which this show was made.

Did you expect them to tearfully confess their love and start making out? Bro if we can’t even get a main gay character in a family friendly mainstream franchise now what makes you think that would have happened then? And especially since they are cultural icons and the entire franchise revolved around their story. I can’t even imagine a popular, commercialized franchise having their leading gents fall in love today. The near ubiquitous disgust towards gay people during that era is something that is sort of lost on us kiddos sometimes.

Kirk and Spock are so culturally significant because they represent the first characters that a generation of queer people saw themselves in. Media rep is important, and this was absolutely an important first step in the shifting of a culture. Intentional or not. Heck, my uncle even admitted to me that those two singlehandedly made him reevaluate his homophobia. He confessed that when he saw the sickbay scene for the first time, he was struck by the deep love they had for each other. And he saw the beauty in that. Why should it matter if they’re two guys?

The fact that they even came up with the concept of “t’hy’la” or included lines like “Jim, this simple feeling is beyond V’Ger’s comprehension,” “I’ve spent a lifetime learning to hide my feelings,” “I have been and always shall be yours,” and the whole “noblest part of myself, I’m responsible for his soul” thing (and the entire plot of The Search for Spock tbh, which is legit just “dude rescues the love of his life by sacrificing everything”) was incredibly bold. If they hadn’t thrown in the words “friend” or “brother” it would be extremely difficult to interpret these moments in a way that wasn’t romantic. And thus, their affection was confined to meaningful looks and layers of subtext.

They seriously went as hard as they could have given era. Depicting them as being explicitly in love would have been impossible. Star Trek takes place in the future, but it is limited by the social conventions of the era in which it is made.

thoughts about Jim Kirk saying he knows he'll die alone

as long as he has his ship, his crew, Bones, Spock, he knows he won't die. he won't die, he refuses to give up and he has so much faith and trust in them.

he'd sacrifice himself a hundred times over, because he can't be without them

how terrified he must have been in The Tholian Web "I had a whole universe to myself....there was absolutely no one else in it. I must say, I prefer a crowded universe much better." When you see the image of him shouting out for Spock, any hope that he's not alone.

the five year mission ends, Spock leaves him. and then we see him in TMP, "Spock, I wish you were here" "I need you" he says to both Bones and Spock. (don't let me be alone) Then he nearly loses Spock, risks his life to make sure Spock is okay. "I need Spock on the bridge"

in WOK, he's an Admiral now, he's lonely and feels old.

(also Spock basically saying "why did you accept position of Admiral? you belong at my side" and Jim's like "yeah ur right lol" then saying "I have been and always shall be yours" like I'll never leave you)

the Kobayashi Maru, he changes the programming. he never gives up "I don't believe in the no win scenario" "you've never faced death" there's always a way out as long as he's not alone.

his face when he realises Spock isn't at his station, and then runs down to the engine room. he considers flooding the whole room with radiation just to get to Spock. "he's dead already" the devastation in his voice. losing the one who was there without fail, realising he won't be there anymore. "you never have faced death." "no, not like this" Spock's death means his own.

the beginning of SFS, losing Spock makes the whole ship feel so empty. he's back to feeling alone again after having got Spock back then losing him. even worse that he loses the Enterprise and he's starting to lose Bones too. he risks everything he has just for a chance to get them back. "you'll lose everything, you'll destroy yourself" David gets killed. he blows up the supposed love of his life (his ship) to have Spock. he can't even watch during the ritual which might lose him everything. "if I hadn't tried, the cost would've been my soul" "the needs of the one outweigh the needs of the many" yes he was talking about the needs of Spock but also himself. he needs Spock, can't live without him.

let's be honest TVH is just a big ridiculous film so there aren't too many dramatic moments where they seriously think they'll die. but you can see the change in him from the first 3 movies. him and Spock are practically married in this.

"I've always known, I'll die alone." you can see Spock thinking he's never going to leave his side again even if it kills him, he spends the whole film trying to prove it to Kirk. he doesn't want to believe Spock betrayed him. "you're either with me or you're not" "I am here, Captain" he's saying you're not alone Jim, I'm right here with you. but Jim doesn't hear what he's saying. "I belong here". sacrifices himself for Spock and Bones, again. and this time he really thinks this is it, he thinks he's alone "what are you waiting for?". then the disbelief and pure adoration when he sees Spock. the moment he finally understands "you were never alone". he won't abandon him. then goes to kiss him THEY'RE FAMILY

The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe (2005)

Adapting C. S. Lewis’ classic novel into a live-action film was a daunting task. It would’ve been impossible a decade ago, but finally, the technology required to make it happen is here. The results have been worth the wait.

Peter (William Moseley), Susan (Anna Popplewell), Edmund (Skandar Keynes), and Lucy Pevensie (Georgie Henley) are evacuated to the country home of Professor Kirke (Jim Broadbent) to escape the dangers of World War II. While playing hide-and-go-seek, Lucy stumbles upon a wardrobe like none other: its doors lead to the realm of Narnia. Inside this land where winter has no end, the cruel White Witch (Tilda Swinton) rules, but her “subjects” know it’s only a matter of time before two daughters of Eve and two sons of Adam, along with the lion Aslan (voiced by Liam Neeson) comes to their rescue.

Between the extended version, which runs a mere 5 minutes longer than the theatrical cut, and the one you saw in theaters, I say go with the original. The additional footage doesn’t add much. The most noticeable change are a few quick shots of the White Queen sending harpies into battle (they look decent, but I suspect they were cut because they stand out against the rest of her army). My only other significant criticism (applicable to both versions) is that, at times, the child actors are only so-so. The exception is Skandar Keynes, who brings depth to Edmund - a character that could’ve easily been one-dimensional. You can forgive this flaw in the same way you did in the early Harry Potter films, but it’s worth noting.

This is a great family film. It’s got exciting battle scenes and likable characters both adults and children can relate to. C.S. Lewis’ story could’ve easily been lost in the flurry of special effects, but amid the crazy creatures and exotic locations, the heart and drama that made this story a favorite remain. Surrounding the child actors and amplified by special effects are a great cast of seasoned performers, including James McAvoy, Ray Winstone, Dawn French and Michael Madsen. There was care poured into this picture, and it shows.

The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe has something for everyone. Lovers of fantasy will be impressed by the  mythological creatures (which include everything from great-looking centaurs and griffins to hideous monsters at the service of the White Witch). Children will enjoy the whimsical story, the frequent close calls as our heroes dodge danger at every turn, and the character growth. Adults will love Tilda Swinton as the villain, who always remains the most imposing and frightening figure on-screen. They’ll also admire the handling of this sophisticated story. It’s a plot complex enough to keep you entertained, but not so much that young audiences won’t be able to keep up.

The Chronicles of Narnia makes me think of The NeverEnding Story; another fantasy adventure that compliments its source material by bringing the visuals to stunning life and preserving what made the story endure. I'll even call it "good for the kids" because it takes them seriously. There are intense moments that allows for a full range of emotions but its tried-and-true themes mean young ones won't be overwhelmed. When you catch it, make sure you stick around for the credits. There’s a scene midway hinting at more to come. (Extended version on DVD, July 21, 2017)
