Summer months can be hit-and-miss for catching live music tours, but this week appears to be far more on the “hit” side of things. San Antonio will be awash in great music options, both from local acts like longtime guitar-slinger Jimmy Spacek and touring artists such as…

Carrie (1976)
By Cris Nyne
Stephen King’s first novel, Carrie, was published in 1974. Within two years, his story of an outcast teenage girl who uses her telekinetic powers to get revenge on those who bullied her, would sell four million copies and fetch $400,000 for the paperback rights. Director Brian DePalma brings the book to life on screen in 1976. Carrie follows the likes of The Exorcist and Texas Chainsaw Massacre as horror films shifted away from campy, B-movies, to become major box-office draws with higher budgets. Following Carrie, we would see films like The Shining (King’s second adaption, and probably most famous), Poltergeist, and Firestarter (also King) continuing to push boundaries and increase audience sizes.
Tumblr media
Carrie White, about to punish the last of her tormentors.
“It’s a beautiful plot—a teen-age Cinderella’s revenge. “Carrie” becomes a new trash archetype, and De Palma, who has the wickedest baroque sensibility at large in American movies, points up its archetypal aspects by parodying the movies that have formed it—and outclassing them.” -Pauline Kael for The New Yorker, November 1976
As soon as the film begins, it’s evident that Carrie is like the chum in an ocean of bullies. From the popular kids in her class, to the neighborhood boy on his bicycle, to her own mother, Carrie cannot seem to find any peace or acceptance. There are no friends she confides in. Even the gym teacher, who on the surface seems to be supportive, ultimately knows why she is an easy target for ridicule. Within the first five minutes of the film, Carrie is taking a shower in the girl’s locker room. As she pulls up her hand from washing the inside of her thigh, it is covered in blood. She is in complete shock and apparently had no knowledge about menstrual cycles and that she would be having her first one today. The other girls in the locker room torment her by throwing feminine hygiene products at her. It is quite a brutal opening to a movie, but we are quick to see that Carrie does not have a connection with anyone.
“She has telekinesis, the ability to manipulate things without touching them. It's a power that came upon her gradually and was released in response to the shrill religious fanaticism of her mother. It manifests itself in small ways. She looks in a mirror, and it breaks. Then it mends itself. Her mother tries to touch her and is hurled back against a couch. But then, on prom night...” -Roger Ebert, January 1976
1976 was the celebration year for the Bicentennial in the US. Jimmy carter defeated Gerald Ford to become the 39th President, and Apple release its first computer. It is interesting to me that this horror film dealing with the powers of the mind coincided with the release of technology that has inched closer and closer to fusing with the human thought process, ever since. When watching the original Carrie, we can really see how far we have come in the age of technology and slick Hollywood production.
youtube
Carrie was both a critical and commercial success. With a budget of 1.8 million dollars, Carrie would go on to generate over 33 million dollars in sales. It would be the second-highest grossing horror film of the year, behind The Omen. Sissy Spacek would receive an Oscar nomination for Best Actress and Piper Laurie would also be nominated for Best Supporting Actress for her role as Carries overzealous, religious fanatic of a mother. Roger Ebert gave it three and a half out of four stars. Rotten Tomatoes currently has Carrie (1976) with a rating of 93%. Carrie is a franchise amongst itself, with three different film remakes or adaptations, and even Carrie: The Musical (1988).
Carrie had all the makings of a cult seventies horror flick. DePalma would purposely slow down or speed up a scene, depending on the control, or lack thereof, emanating from Carrie White. The religious dictation from the mouth of her mother in a dark room with perfectly timed lightning to punctuate dialogue. The short gym shorts with knee-high socks. The blood. Carrie became more soaked in it during the final prom scene as the shots progressed from the original dumping of the bucket of pig blood from a relatively unknown John Travolta and his girlfriend from under the stage. At times, the scenes had this dream sequence to them that you would see in soap operas as they would fade to a memory.
Tumblr media
After the release of his first novel, King quickly became a name brand for the horror genre. Audiences would file into theaters just to see how his words would translate onto screen. Sissy Spacek became a well-known actor after her breakout role in Terrence Malick’s 1973 hit, Badlands, where she would be nominated for a BAFTA for Most Promising Newcomer to Leading Film Roles. Brian DePalma was an up-and-coming director who was aiming for his first blockbuster as horror films were pulling in bigger numbers at the box office. Although just about everybody involved was still relatively green in the gills, the burgeoning star power of the writer, actor, and director made this a conventional Hollywood film. They were all just getting started.
The film was presented on a bloody platter with no strings attached. At the end, you had a feeling that maybe there could be more to come as DePalma shows an empty lot where a house used to be with a For Sale sign on a cross. I first saw Carrie when I was probably too young, but some of the images from the film would make a defined imprint in my brain. It was still an engaging film after watching it again for the first time since I was a child. At times, the dialogue and supporting actors came off as a bit dated as we have progressed as a culture in the last fifty years, but some of the images and scenes remain rooted in American cinema history, and my mind.

Idle Hours - ‘Televangelist’ Single
Manchester indie risers Idle Hours announce debut EP ‘The Fourth Wall’, set for release August 19th, and share intoxicating new cut ‘Televangelist’, arriving today (July 5th).
Following on from motorik-infused, jangle-pop lead single ‘Souvenirs’, Idle Hours’ quizzical and assuring social commentary comes to the fore once again in second EP reveal ‘Televangelist’. Heavily influenced by the likes of Blur and Ulrika Spacek, the band’s garage rock sensibilities have already culminated in slots alongside acts including The Lounge Society, Keg, The Rills and Silverbacks, with several of their own sold-out hometown shows ticked off, and further live dates lined up to coincide with their summer EP release.
Speaking ahead of their latest single release, frontman Jack Waldron revealed: “The song was born out of a short-lived fascination with the American Televangelism industry, fuelled by late night attempts to escape the YouTube hole - often unsuccessful. The greed, narcissism and exploitation surrounding Televangelism felt like a very interesting subject to write about”.
Produced by Seanda Mcphail (The Orielles, Doves, Blanketman), Idle Hours’ ‘Televangelist’ is out July 5th and will be available on all digital platforms.
‘The Fourth Wall’ Tracklist 01 - Made Flesh 02 - French Disconnection 03 - Souvenirs 04 - Televangelist

Last year for Halloween I posted suggestions for outdoor decorations for Poet Scarlett Sabet and her boyfriend Jimmy Page here.
This year I thought I would make a stab at Easy Halloween costumes for them.
Poet Scarlett Sabet as misfit, telekinetic Carrie White from Stephen King’s 1976 movie Carrie. All she needs is a crown!
Jimmy Page as “Father Jimmy” from Kensington Catholic brought in to exorcise Carrie’s demons.

Stand by your man. Workin' 9 to 5. Rockin' to the rhythm of the rain. Independence day. Wild one. Tell me why I haven't heard from you? Man I feel like a woman. Cry pretty.
And on the MSR (Midnight Star Review), I would give this special show a 3 out of 5 stars.  Somewhat felt like it was average except for maybe Carrie Underwood's ending.  But probably a good start to see if CMT (Country Music Television) sticks with this for another year.  Thanks for taking the time to read this review.  See ya all next time.

COFFEE TALK with Dauzat St. Marie
Tumblr media
Q: Everyone in the music industry has a few favorite “industry moments;” the time you had dinner with your favorite artist or worked with someone you respected and/or admired… what are a few of your favorite industry moments?
Mat - One of my favorite “industry moments” that most people don’t know about is when I got to jam some of my favorite songs with Ozzy Osbourne and band when I auditioned for the guitar seat in the Ozzy’s band. We sounded GREAT! And EXTREMELY LOUD!!! 🔈 🔈 🔈
Heather - When we toured with Pat Benatar, every night during her set, she would make it a point to call us out by name and commend us on our talents (and adorableness). And every night, I felt like I was floating above the ground to have such an incredible musician give us accolades.
Q: If you were to make a playlist of the songs that are part of your DNA, the comfort food that you keep coming back to, that never fail to move and inspire you, what would those tracks be?
Mat - Ugh. How does one decide??? I’ll give you a list for today, but that would likely change should you ask me again tomorrow. Here goes (in no certain order): “Photographs and Memories” by Jim Croce. A masterful song by one of the true masters of song. “More Than A Feeling” by Boston. It has everything - great guitar riffs, guitar solo harmonies, vocal hooks, LOADS of vocal harmonies, and plenty of opportunities for me to show off the fact that I can hit some seriously high notes! “One More Try” by George Michael. Devastatingly powerful vocal performance. “Tiny Dancer” by Elton John. And if you ask me again tomorrow, I’ll give you another Elton song. And again the day after. “No More Tears” by Ozzy Osbourne. Signature bass riff, crushing guitar riffs, crushing guitar tone, stellar vocal melody and performance, and one of my favorite guitar solos of all time. “Tom Sawyer” by Rush. I know that one might seem like a weird choice, but anytime that song comes on my radio, I turn the volume ALL THE WAY UP and I get out my air drumsticks and GO TO TOWN... and all becomes right with the world. “Rain When I Die” by Alice In Chains. This is another band where you can ask me again tomorrow and I might give you another song. SO MANY GREAT SONGS! “The Sweetness” by Jimmy Eat World. An ultimate singalong song... whether you actually know the correct lyrics or NOT! It just oozes with hooky poppy sugary goodness. “Red Rain” by Peter Gabriel. Or really any song on “So.” “Like Suicide” by Soundgarden. Dark and moody, but delicious. “Buttercup” by Brad. So moody and powerful. “Say Hello 2 Heaven” by Temple Of The Dog.
Heather - My playlist changes with my moods or with the weather. Lol But I’ll narrow down some of the songs that I get lost in when I’m playing them: “Isis” by Bob Dylan - The live versions of this song are fantastic! And the attitude and delivery of the vocal is perfect. “Unbound” by Ásgeir - His voice is so smooth, and his songs are equally beautiful in English and his native Icelandic tongue. “Hold On” by flor - It’s hard to pick one song from this band, but this song is how I discovered flor. It’s perfect for a road trip - or dancing while doing laundry! “Hurricane” by MS MR - Such dark attitude and a KILLER vocal! “Fears” by MTNS - I love how this song builds up tension musically with an almost lazy vocal - until it just blossoms on the chorus. “Nola 1” and “Hallucinations” by PVRIS - Lynn Gunn is one of my favorite vocalists. She can go from singing to shredding in a beat, and the blend of genres keeps the band interesting. You never know what you’re gonna get with PVRIS - but it’s gonna be great! “Somebody Else” by The 1975 - What can I say? This is one of those songs that’s a crystalized gem of perfection. “Lifespan” by Vultures - Another band with a powerful female vocal! Their songs are so much fun to sing. I just wish the band had stuck together to make more music. “Come Rain or Shine” by James Booker - This guy felt every note he sang and played! His music was coming from every cell in his body. “I.Y.H.” by Elliot Root - Woah, such a dark and bittersweet song! And that smokey vocal just cuts through that painful emotion-scape. “Looking Too Closely” by Fink - Watch YouTube videos of Fink performing live. Fin always sounds like an album - he’s just sooooo good! “If I Get High” by Nothing But Thieves - I love this band’s soaring vocals and creative guitar lines. This song, especially, is so much fun to sing!
Q: Are there any artists that never really made it, that you’ve discovered, that you wish people could hear and embrace.
Mat - I’m not sure what the threshold is for having “made it” any more, but one artist who I’d love to see get a little more mainstream attention is Martin Sexton. I met Martin many, many years ago when we played the ASCAP Sundance Festival showcase (I was playing with Schuyler Fisk at the time). I was blown away. Schuyler and I met up with him again some years later while we were on tour and saw him in his element in front of a quite sizable crowd... OUTSTANDING! His live show is raw and powerful. Go to one of his live shows if you ever get a chance.
Heather - Like Mat, many of the “smaller” bands I listen to may feel that they HAVE, indeed, “made it.” Success is different for all of us. But I do love discovering new artists. Many of the bands on my setlist above are all doing their thing to varying degrees of audience reach, and I would love for y’all to check out the ones you haven’t heard before. A few others are Aquilo and Colouring.
Q: Who was your mentor? Why?
Mat - I’ve been blessed with many mentors on my journey through life and music, and I draw wisdom and inspiration from all. Traveling with Ozzy Osbourne and family when I was touring with Kelly was awesome because Ozz would drop all kinds of wisdom nuggets daily.... and plenty of WILD stories as well. Touring with Schuyler Fisk afforded me time with her mother Sissy Spacek, who imparted a lot of wisdom... and a LOT of laughs! Touring with Rick Springfield has certainly shaped us as we get to travel and work with one of the savviest and hardest-working guys in the biz... and he is always so supportive and helpful to our efforts.
Though you can probably spot an obvious theme of mentorship by folks we tour with, the biggest mentor in my life is one we don’t tour with... my father. His influence inspires so many aspects of my life, and my awe of his strong work ethic keeps me driven every day.
Heather - I was fortunate to have many people take me under their wing and guide me through the twists and turns of my life… and I’m grateful for each of them. If I had to choose one, I’d say it is my Grandmother. She taught me how to face adversity with a smile - understanding that these are the moments that shape us. And at 98, she still faces life with fearlessness and excitement.
Q: What’s the best part of what you do?
Heather - Mat and I put quite a bit of thought and heart into our lyrics, so it always means a great deal when people share their experiences about how our songs have impacted their lives. I feel that we’re all on this earth to make connections, and if our voices and our art creates a deep and lasting impression on someone’s soul - then we’re doing something right!
Mat - ☝🏻☝🏻what SHE said!

Carrie (1976) by Michael Bump
Carrie (1976) by Michael Bump
Carrie is a 1976 film directed by Brain De Palma. The film is based on the novel of the same name by Stephen King. The story is about a high school student named Carrie White who has telekinetic powers. Carrie is bullied by her classmates relentlessly. As her powers grow stronger, she began to become isolated, and her powers were unstable leading a tragedy at the high school. The opening of Carrie starts with her experiencing her first period in the locker room. Carrie was unaware of what was going on with her body. Carrie became visibly upset and her classmates began to tease her. Word of the incident quickly spread through the school and Carrie began to get bullied much worse. Sissy Spacek does an amazing job portraying the character's vulnerability and innocence. An interesting aspect of the film is the use of split screen scenes. In doing so the viewer is exposed to multiple scenes at once. The music playing throughout the film is haunting and atmospheric. It provides the movie with a consistent feeling of doom and unease. Carrie’s mother is played by Piper Laurie. Margaret White, Carrie’s mother, was a religious fanatic. She behaved abusively towards her daughter. Laurie’s performance is chilling.
The climax of Carrie, and most likely one of the most famous scenes from the film, is when Carrie is drenched in pigs' blood in front of her classmates and by her classmates. The picture I tagged along with this post is a photo from that scene. Films and television pay homage to this scene by recreating it in their own projects. The music during this scene is ominous. The scene felt like it lasted a long time, and the combination of effects and terrifying music made that scene epic. The film’s ending and the book’s ending differed from each other. The end of the film is tragic for Carrie unfortunately, she ended up succumbing to the abusive parenting of her mother.
Carrie is a classic horror film, but the message still holds true today. The message of what happens when someone is bullied and pushed into isolation. This is a testament to what would happen if the one being bullied had telekinesis and could take revenge on their abusers. The year that Carrie was released had many historical events. The first event was Jimmy Carter defeated President Gerald Ford, who was the incumbent, and became the country’s next President. It was a shocking upset because it is common for the incumbent President to get reelected. The other major historical event in 1976 was the landing of the first Martian module. It was the first craft ever to reach the surface of Mars.
Carrie is the epitome of horror. It was well received by the audience. The budget for Carrie was a little over One million dollars. After the release, the film grossed over thirty-three million dollars worldwide. Carrie is a conventional Hollywood horror film. Although there are elements of terror that are unlike other films in the same genre. The music of the film tends to stick in the ears because of how disturbing it is. Anyone who is interested in scary movies should see Carrie. It is a classic Stephen King novel brought to life.
“Part of his success is a result of the very good performances by Sissy Spacek, as Carrie, and by Piper Laurie, as Carrie's mother. They form a closed-off, claustrophobic household, the mother has translated her own psychotic fear of sexuality into a twisted personal religion. She punishes the girl constantly, locks her in closets with statues of a horribly bleeding Christ, and refuses to let her develop normal friendships.” Roger Ebert
“Carrie” is a terrifyingly lyrical thriller. The director, Brian De Palma, has mastered a teasing style—a perverse mixture of comedy and horror and tension, like that of Hitchcock or Polanski, but with a lulling sensuousness. He builds our apprehensions languorously, softening us for the kill. You know you’re being manipulated, but he works in such a literal way and with so much candor that you have the pleasure of observing how he affects your susceptibilities even while you’re going into shock. Scary-and-funny must be the greatest combination for popular entertainment; anything-and-funny is, of course, great—even funny-and-funny. But we come out of a movie like “Carrie,” as we did out of “Jaws,” laughing at our own childishness. It’s like watching our team win a ballgame—we’re almost embarrassed at how bracing it is.”- Paula Kael 1976

Scaring Up The Neighborhood For 32 Years, HOUSE Released Today in 1986
Hollywood released quite a competitive catalogue of films in 1986, many of which we consider classics by today’s standards. For mainstream films, these included Pretty in Pink, Top Gun, Ferris Bueller’s Day Off and Platoon (just to name a few). The horror genre released quite a few memorable features as well in 1986, attempting to capitalize on the overwhelming popularity of visual effects of the times. Such horror films included Aliens, Poltergeist II, Night of the Creeps, The Fly and Little Shop of Horrors. A particular film, released 36 years ago on February, 28th 1986 was House.
The American horror (sometimes comedy), came into the scene with a cavalry of seasoned actors/actresses, bringing genre fans a movie both terrifying and appealing. Rather than the overly gore filled horror films of the time, House was a dark, character driven story with personality.
Box Office
Directed by Steve Miner (Friday the 13th Part II & Part III) and co-written by Fred Dekker (Monster Squad), House reportedly placed second at the U.S. box office, grossing $5.9 million opening weekend against a production budget of $3 million (USD). Also released on February 28th, Pretty in Pink dominated the box office with $6.1 million, taking first place as highest grossing film that weekend. UPI journalist, Bob Webster, published an article shortly after the films release stating, “Three films fell close behind Pretty in Pink in competition for the nation’s second most popular motion picture. House, a New World horror suspense film about the weird doings of strange and sometimes funny monsters, either fell to or remained in second place — depending on who you ask”. Ultimately, House was a financial success grossing $19.4 million in domestic box offices.
  Plot
Novelist Roger Cobb, a troubled Vietnam war veteran whose son went missing under mysterious circumstances. His ex-wife, played by Kay Lenz (Death Wish 4, Headhunter), continually makes an effort to help Cobb move beyond his grief. After the puzzling suicide of Cobb’s aunt, Elizabeth Hooper, he inherits his childhood home and immediately moves in to work on his latest novel. In an attempt to absolve himself from the trauma of war, Cobb’s latest novel is based on his wartime experience in Vietnam. As Cobb’s nightmares become more vivid with every passing night, the spirits of the house begin terrorizing him with visions from his past. Eventually, the fears borne from Cobb’s mind materialize in the form of monsters capable of killing him. Throughout battling the evil spirits plaguing the house, Cobb manages to unfold the mysterious behind the disappearance of his son, Jimmy.
  Cast & Crew
Prior to directing House, Steve Miner’s directorial debut included the first two sequels of the Friday the 13th franchise. Initially serving as associate producer to the first Friday the 13th film, Steve Miner helped pave the way for Jason Voorhees’ entry into the film series. After helming the classic horror series, Miner’s third feature came to be his first horror-comedy, House (1986), produced by Sean S. Cunningham. Yeah, THAT Sean S. Cunningham.
Written by Fred Dekker, House was meant to serve as a segment for a horror anthology that was initially inspired by The Twilight Zone: The Movie (1983). In an interview with Roger Cobb’s House, the official movie website, Dekker states, “My college pals and I wanted to be filmmakers. Between beers (or because of them), we decided to embark on a group endeavor inspired by Twilight Zone: The Movie. Each of us would direct our own segment of a video anthology.” He later explains, “At some point, it occurred to me: what if my Twilight Zone-ette and my scary haunted house movie were one and the same? What if my protagonist is the Vietnam vet, and the reason he’s going into the house is to exorcise his personal demons once and for all??”
William Katt, who plays House protagonist Roger Cobb, is also known for a notable role in the horror film world. Katt played Tommy Ross in 1976’s Carrie alongside Sissy Spacek. Katt would eventually star in a variety of roles which required a different set of disciplines and challenges prior to returning to the horror genre in ’85. As Sean S. Cunningham, House producer, notes on the selectiveness of choosing the right actor(s) for the film, regarding Katt he states, “In this picture, if you don’t like the character of Cobb you haven’t got a movie.” He continues, “It was essential to have an actor who could blend humor with pathos; and the part also required the actor to be in top physical condition. Bill was a natural for the role.”
The film also employs the masterful American film composer, Harry Manfredini, whose movie credits include that of the Friday the 13th series (including an original score for The Friday the 13th: The Game). According to Manfredini’s official website, he has scored over one hundred films including Slaughter High, The Hills Have Eyes 2, The Horror Show, and Lake Eerie.
  Monsters and Special Effects
Creature and special effects designer James Cummins wanted to create an environment that would compliment Cobb’s nightmares with its manifestations. In describing his attempt to design the creatures for House, he stated, “While we hope the creatures are frightening, we want to cut down on gore and shoot for something more surrealistic.” He continued, “The overall feel of the motion picture is that the character of Roger Cobb is experiencing things in a surreal, dreamlike way, so we constructed the beasts to achieve a fantastic, almost cartoonish quality.”
  Legacy
Known for its horror and slapstick humor, House also utilized a familiar theme that was pretty controversial at the time; the film touches base with PTSD in an era during the American public’s lack of understanding. Just as Roger Cobb was wrestling with the demons of his past, the audience could have an opportunity to better understand how his nightmares and guilt were collaborators in tearing at his sanity. Roger Cobb was not only a victim to the haunting spirits in the house, but to his wartime traumas as well. At some point throughout the film, you may find yourself asking if Cobb had imagined the entire ordeal. I know I did. Today, House stands as one of the most notable horror films of the 1980’s, mainly due to its special effects at the time. Even for a saturated market in the horror genre, House held its own by even producing three additional sequels.
Let’s celebrate House’s 32nd birthday today by revisiting this little horror gem! Pop in your movie disc, VHS or stream this monster classic to relive the haunting nightmare.
