Book Recommendations: National Soup Month
Soup’s On by Mark Reinfeld
In this definitive guide to vegan soups, award-winning chef Mark Reinfeld gives you all the tools and tips to create easy, flavorful meals - within thirty minutes or less. Prepare to feast upon a wide array of plant-based soups-from consommés to stews, chowders to raw and dessert soups. From a selection of stocks to irresistible toppings and accompaniments, these inspired recipes cover a broad spectrum of international cuisine. Soup's On! contains an inspiring foreword by Dr. Neal Barnard and is divided into six sections: The Art of Soup Creation; Vegetable-based Soups; Soups and Stews with Grains, Legumes and Pasta; Creamy Blended Soups; Raw and Dessert Soups; and Garnishes and Sides.
Zuppe by Mona Talbott
A Chez Panisse graduate, Talbott was chosen by Alice Waters to be Executive Chef of the innovative Rome Sustainable Food Project at the American Academy in Rome. There, while cooking for the Academy’s creative community of scholars, historians, artists, archaeologists, and architects, Talbott perfected a repertoire of dishes made from local, seasonal, organic ingredients. Central to the menu are soups.
Inspired by the traditions of cucina povera, the so-called “cuisine of the poor” that has been the source of so many brilliant Italian dishes, Talbott’s recipes waste nothing, employ the concept of arrangiarsi (“making do”), and skillfully transform leftovers. And, in another nod to the wisdom and economy of traditional kitchens, she also points out which soups can easily be made into one-dish meals with the addition of a single ingredient such as a poached egg, a piece of grilled toast, or even clams.
Much more than a collection of remarkable soups, Mona Talbott’s Zuppe is also a wise and gentle tutorial on the “the beauty and delicious rewards of frugality” and how the humblest foods can be the most profoundly satisfying. In addition to 50 recipes, Talbott shares approaches and techniques that can change the way a cook thinks about economy, improvisation, and using all the flavors and nutrients inherent in each ingredient.
Superfood Soups by Julie Morris
Acclaimed superfood chef Julie Morris has chosen 100 favorites packed with nutrient-dense and plant-based whole foods such as vegetables and fruits, legumes and grains, nuts and seeds. Plus, she boosts each dish with such scientifically lauded superfoods as chia, medicinal mushrooms, turmeric, and kale. From a comforting Smoky Pumpkin Soup with Candied Seed Clusters, to an irresistibly inventive Watermelon Goji Gazpacho, to the tasty Cacao Black Bean Soup, every health-giving bowl delivers deeply nourishing deliciousness that satisfies on every level. Along with beautiful color photographs, the book is full of helpful soup-making advice and information about the health rewards of superfood soups, including soup cleanses and rejuvenating broths.
Soup of the Day by Ellen Brown

In Soup of the Day, Ellen Brown presents more than 150 classic and inventive recipes, most of which were collected from top restaurants across the nation. Soup for Two by Joanna Pruess
From Rainy Day Tomato Bisque with Mini Grilled Cheese Sandwiches to Tuscan White Bean Soup with Sage, the recipes in this innovative collection will sustain and nourish home chefs the way the best homemade soups should. The number of ingredients is modest and the techniques are easy, but the resulting dishes are nothing less than spectacular. The way Joanna Pruess cooks for two doesn’t mean you’re left with lots of half-empty containers cluttering your refrigerator shelves. In every case, from Mom’s Chicken Noodle to Swiss Chard, Potato, and Sausage, these soups require ingredients that can be easily procured in small portions. Try them all!

Heartache: Part Two
Pairing: Dean Winchester x Female!Reader
Word Count: ~2k
Warnings: canon angst and violence
Author’s Note: I do not own anything from Supernatural. All credit goes to their respective owners. Any and all comments on these are appreciated.
"Alright, so... what's the word? What did you find poking around at Paul's?" Sam asks when everyone digs into their food.
You share your fruit, veggies, and part of your sandwich with Joanna who eats it like it's her favorite thing in the world. You're sad since you don't know what her favorite food is right now. She takes her sippy cup and drinks the juice you had placed inside.
"Ah, just the usual--condoms and hair gel. No hex bags, nothing satanic, and nothing spooky."
Dean is using Sam's laptop while Sam is flipping through the case file papers.
"So, he didn't seem like a guy who would be voted most likely to disembowel?"
"No, they never do." Dean clips a few more things before coming up on something. "Wait a minute. Here's another one."
"What, another murder?"
"And a do-it-yourself heart bypass. Two days after this one."
"What part of Minneapolis?"
"The Iowa part. Ames."
"Well, Paul was here being questioned. There's no way that could have been him."
"This guy was a cop. This is exactly what happened six months ago. Minneapolis, then Ames. Guess you missed that one." Sam gives Dean the bitch face, but the older brother shrugs. "I'm just saying."
You look at his screen and read the headline: Officer Arthur Swensen, resident of Ames, now in Police Custody.
As soon as everyone is done eating, you take the three hour drive from where you are over to Ames, Iowa in hopes you can speak with Officer Swensen. When you get to the Ames Police Station, the officers there seem like they were expecting you.
"Arthur Swenson. Real top-shelf officer. Twenty years on the force."
"How did he get caught?" you ask.
"He ordered a pizza, which the vic delivered. The vic didn't make his next drop-off. His body was found on the walk in front of Swenson's."
"His heart was gone?"
"Yeah, heartless."
"And, uh, what about Swenson?" Sam asks.
"Crumpled on the front stoop, covered in blood, and crying like a baby. Ironically, he had been in court all week, testifying." A phone rings nearby, and the officer picks it up. "Go ahead."
"So, that couldn't have been him in Minneapolis," you say to the brothers while the officer talks on the phone.
"I hate when this happens," Dean groans. The officer hangs up and Dean turns to him. "So, this Arthur guy, what does he have to say?"
"Uh... it's not real helpful. I don't think you'll want to bring a baby in there."
"We'll be fine. Lead the way," you assure, putting a hand on her back.
He takes you three to the interrogation rooms where Swensen is. He's muttering something in a language you don't recognize, but the officer leaves you three to it.
"K'uhul ajaw, Cacao, shi-jiiy. K'uhul ajaw, Cacao, shi-jiiy," Swensen repeats.
"So, you getting his statement?" Dean asks his brother.
"Yeah, probably not."
"It's too bad I dropped out of Lunatic 101."
"Whatever it is, it sounds like he's repeating it."
"Look at his eyes." Dean walks over to Swensen and waves a hand in front of his eyes. "Hey, Arthur... did you do this alone?"
No response.
"Arthur, did some invisible voice tell you you had to kill?" Sam tries.
Swensen bangs his fists against the metal table and continues chanting.
"K'uhul ajaw, Cacao, shi-jiiy! K'uhul ajaw, Cacao, shi-jiiy."
"Oh, now you've pissed him off. Hey, Art. Can I call you Art? Listen, I'm gonna sprinkle your arm with holy water and it's gonna steam and burn if you're possessed by a demon." Dean says and takes out his flask. Sam gives him a look, but Dean waves him off. "He's a mushroom."
Dean pours the holy water over Swensen's arm, but nothing happens.
"Okay, he's not possessed. That's good," you say.
"Arthur, you want to tell us why you did this?"
"K'uhul ajaw, Cacao, shi-jiiy."
"Okay," Dean sighs and heads for the door.
You're not going to get anything out of him except for that chant.
Back at the motel room, Zeus is lying comfortably by your side with his head in your lap while you use your magic to hide Joanna's toys all around the room. Her job is to go find them. It's something to keep her mind active, to build her memory and problem solving strength, and to keep her entertained. You always put them in places she can see since you're not going to make this hard on her.
You've recently just hid her favorite toy, an Elsa doll that she begged you to have. She sleeps with that doll all the time, but you think it's cute. She rushes over to the bed and struggles to climb on it, throwing the pillows to see if it's there. When she sees Elsa's head peeking from between the mattress and headboard, she squeals in happiness.
"Mama! I found it!" she grins and grabs her doll.
"Yes you did, sweetheart. Good job!" you grin.
She slides off the bed and runs over to you to pass the doll into your hands. She looks at your growing stomach and places both hands on it to feel if the babies move or not. You know she's curious about your pregnant belly, so you try to put this in a way you know she'd understand.
"Sweetheart, you're getting a baby brother and a baby sister. You're going to be a big sister."
"Baby?" she asks.
"Yes, two babies."
"Now?"
"No, they can't come now. They have to grow inside my belly a little bit longer."
"You eat, mama?" she asks so innocently.
"No, baby, I didn't eat them," you chuckle and pull her into your arms, minding Zeus' head. "I'll need you to be a good big sister for me, okay? I'll need your help with them."
"Okay mama," she grins.
"That's my girl," you grin and kiss her head.
While you're having a heart-to-heart with your daughter, Sam and Dean are going over the recording that they took of Swensen chanting in the foreign language. They're still wearing their dress shirts and pants, but their jackets are slung over the back of their chairs. You don't think you've ever seen a more attractive duo than Sam and Dean.
"So, what do you think?" Sam asks after playing the recording a third time. "Can you actually understand any of the words?"
"I don't think any of us can," you comment.
"She's right. It sounds like babble to me. Wait a second." Dean takes out his phone with a proud smile. "I bought a translation app."
"You bought an app?" Sam asks in disbelief.
"Yeah, here, play it." Dean gets his app set up before Sam plays the recording. It takes Dean all of three seconds to read what the app has to say. "And babble wins. Language unknown."
Sam's phone rings, and he stops the recording to answer it.
"Agent Sambora," he greets. "What? Yeah, we're on our way. Thank you."
"What is it?" you ask.
"Arthur bashed his head in and is now in the hospital."
Dean immediately gets up and grabs his jacket, and Sam goes to do the same, but you are quick to stop him.
"Sam, you know I love you, but could you stay behind on this one? Joanna needs her nap, and I could really use the reassurance that she is going to get a full rest instead of out and about."
"Uh, yeah, I can do that. I can do some more research here."
"Thank you."
You lean up and kiss his cheek, and he turns away before you can see the faint blush on his cheeks.
Don't think about your brother's pregnant wife like that. Stop it.
You choose to ignore that comment inside Sam's head because you don't want to make things awkward between everyone here. Instead, you smile and leave with Dean once the two of you are ready. You two head to the hospital and meet with Dr. Kashi who is in charge of Arthur Swensen and his care. Arthur is lying in a hospital bed with a bandage wrapped around his head when you arrive.
"So, Dr. Kashi, what are we looking at here, some kind of psychotic break?" Dean asks.
"Oh, definitely. He was very thorough. Severed the optic nerve. He was determined to remove the eye."
"What did he use to cut himself with?" you wonder.
"He doesn't look strong enough, but he broke off part of the bed frame and used it as a knife."
"Wow. They should put warning labels on those beds."
"Like I said, determined."
"I noticed that he had two different-colored eyes," Dean remembers.
Maybe you were too preoccupied with other things because you didn't even notice that.
"Yes. Apparently, he was in an accident where much of one eye was shattered. His vision was saved with a transplant."
"When was this?"
Dr. Kashi looks at the file in her hands.
"A year ago, almost to the date. Interestingly, it's the transplanted eye he chose to cut out."
"Is it possible to trace the donor of a transplanted organ?"
"It's difficult."
"But possible?" Dean asks with a smile.
She seems smitten with your husband, so she agrees to do the research for him. It's to be expected wherever you go that women will fall for Dean's charming personality and good looks, but at the end of the day, you're the one he's going home to. You're the one who he has three kids with. You're the one he married.
"Would you excuse us? We need to get going, but we appreciate your help," you smile.
You take Dean off to the side, and he stops you before you can get too far.
"Are you jealous?" he grins.
"No, and you know why?"
"Why?"
"Because you're my soulmate." You reach up and cup his jaw, rubbing your thumb across his cheek. "And where are you going to find another woman like me?"
Dean smiles and pulls you in closer, not caring who is seeing this. He plants his lips on yours and kisses you passionately. You giggle against his lips when his fingers brush the ticklish spot on your waist and you pull away from him reluctantly. He reaches down and places a hand on your stomach, rubbing your belly from over your clothes. The babies are old enough to kick, but you haven't felt it yet. You feel them move every day, but not a kick yet.
"I love you," you whisper.
"I love you," he whispers back.
You two leave the hospital hand-in-hand, stopping to grab some food before heading back to the motel. Joanna is still sleeping when you get back, and Sam is dressed in his casual clothing rather than his FBI clothing. Zeus is taking a little nap on the bed, but you don't pay any attention to them as you head to the bathroom to change out of your FBI clothing into something more comfortable.
When you exist, Dean is in casual clothing as well.
"Arthur Swenson had an eye transplant a year ago, right?"
Dean must have caught Sam up when you were in the bathroom.
"Yeah."
"Well, I remembered that Paul Hayes was talking about a health scare he had a year ago that changed his life, so I pulled up his medical records from Minneapolis." There is a long pause, so you look between the brothers to see them staring at each other. You never had any siblings, so you don't understand how they can have full conversations with just their eyes. "You two want me on board, I'm on board. Anyways, you want to guess who else, other than Arthur Swenson, had a transplant in the last year?"
"Paul Hayes?" you ask.
"I gave it away, didn't I?"
"Or, I'm just really smart," you grin.
"Okay, so we've got two suspects in two identical murders in two different cities that both had organ transplants a year ago."
"Also, I got to thinking about all that stuff Swenson was talking about. Maybe your translation app called it 'language unknown' because it's a dead language, like ancient Greek or Manx."
"Manx?"
"I emailed an audio file of Arthur's mumbling to Dr Morrison.'
"Who?"
"You really have short-term memory loss," you half-joke. "He's the one who helped us on the Amazon case."
"Okay. Well, let's get our asses on the road."
"Headed to...?"
"Well, if we are in a repeat of a cycle from six months ago, then, after the murders in Minneapolis and in Ames, the next heart attack was in Boulder, Colorado."
"We can go when Joanna wakes up. I don't want to wake her up before her nap is supposed to be over."

Editore: More Stories
