So I Gender-swapped Kakyoin and Giorno, it’s about time I posted some art of Fem! Jonathan aka Joanna Joestar!

So I’ve been writing a part 3 rewrite (Every Little Thing She Does Is Magic) but if some of the characters were gender-swapped for funsies and Joanna was my first. I was originally going to start my AU with part 1 but I found it hard to write it so just went to part 3 and I’m back writing part 1 while planning for future part 3 chapters (why is my brain like this?).

So I decided to draw some outfits for Joanna, I’ve seen far too many people draw Fem! Johnathan in a dress or corset but the more I watched part 1 and read the manga the more I realised that wouldn’t make sense, I mean with how much fighting she’s doing the dress would be in the way so I’ve made her a Tom-boy. In my AU, if she’s wearing a dress it’s because Dio or her father is controlling her wardrobe, not because it was her choice.

I saw this cool looking coat on Pinterest and immediately wanted to use it with how the bottom looked and I think it fits, helps with her silhouette and very dramatic. I loved how it came out! And of course I had to do the battle outfit, because cropped tops weren’t a thing back in Victorian England I made it that it was torn in a fight (maybe from a zombie or something? Haven’t decided).

I would like to do Jonathan’s other outfits Araki has drawn him in in the future, I think it would be fun.

Okay, so JJBA, right?

Specifically, the CANON FACT that a kid of mixed fatherhood (Dio w/ Jonathan's body) can exist. What if, somehow, by some twisted turn of fate, Dio (& technically Jonathan) had a daughter with someone fully aware of the depraved reason for that strange scar he has? The mother moved to America for family reasons & went into labor. Since she was born female & the mother wanted a boy, the mother didn't want her. Instead, she opted to leave the baby at a fire station's doorstep with a name written on a scrap of paper: the options are below.

(TBH I am terrible at colliding names, I just offered the first one because it sounded close to Jane Doe, an unidentified woman's body.)

As for her personality, she could be mixed with several traits of the Joestars we know. Jonathan's manners (to an extent), Joseph's love for his family (obviously, all the Joestars have this trait aside from those Dio made. I mean in the since of being protective af of those she views as family), Josuke's love of his hair & his friends, Jotaro's stern & stoic behavior with his planning, Giorno's wit & persistance, & Jolyne's boldness (minus the moonlight from between prison bars, please). She's likely the same height as Jonathan during the whole fight(s) with Dio with decent muscle. Not feminine muscle or however the men of this ranchise are designed to look like. Think of Josuke's muscle; not too much but not too little, ect. Add Dio's genes into the cocktail that she is & you could have something interesting. As in all of these traits, but put to a Dio-level amount. Don't get me wrong, she's still decent, she just has lapses in her quiet existance & all that, but then someone slaps her trigger full force & then she's 100% Brando in terms of violence & brutality.

All of that being said, she isn't just her genetics. She could also be a roast queen, frigid/shrewd, attractive but intimidating, loves things like roller durby, boxing, snakes/reptiles, bats, spiders, big birds (falcons, hawks, harpy eagles, etc.), dogs, cats, football (american, likely), & sewing. She might be the kind of friend who could be the Uncle Iroh of the group or the one who tells you to your face when something is stupidly dangerous. Likely not one for Toxic Positivity or negative outlooks. Neutral. You don't bother me & I don't bother you mentality with a drizzle of you help me & I help you mentality.

MORE JOJ GIRLS joanna's design isn't creative at all with the exception of her dress. like its deadass just jonathans outfit. now i already touched a bit on the subject here, but boy howdy if she still doesn't live in my head rent free. since writing said post, I've had a brain blast in the form of an epiphany that, what if all those concepts, but she's TRANS. i know, i'm a genius (read also: stupid gay idiot). t4t jonaeri, anyone?

i wanted her design to reflect the journey of coming into her own, and finding her own definition of womanhood. at the beginning of PH, she wears very traditionally victorian clothing. long dresses, corsets, those big ass hats, the whole sha bang. over the course of the story, however, she realizes she doesn't need to conform to societal standards to be "worthy" of the title of woman, so she begins to dress in ways she wants to, or is practical for that specific situation. i wanted to make it a point that while she lets her hair down, she never cuts it or is like "EW EARRINGS BLEH' cuz like. femininity isn't her enemy!! its the patriarchal standards that enforce such a rigid, static form of it onto people!!

when it comes to the trans aspect of her story, I thought long and hard about how to go about it cuz like. i'm trans masc myself, and the last thing i'd want to do is try to infuse transness into a story and have it feel like a redundant, shitty commentary that intrudes on the narrative or smth. i think I've come up with a good idea of where to go with it, though.

i think joanna probably came out sometime in her early teen years, around 13-15, but started questioning around the time she met erina, (haven't come up w a name for him yet, if yall have any ideas feel free to shout em.) who came out much earlier, like 9 or so. just like the idea of joanna being like "omg wow u changed ur gender wow that's so crazy haha doesn't everyone feel that way tho" and erina's like. no???? they don't????

anyway once joanna came out lady joestar was like "ok fine u can trans ur gender BUT you gotta be a lady." which sucks cuz no more rugby but fuck it we ball (or I guess. not. ball.) she struggles a lot with being a poised debutante cuz shes like 6'5 and rich dudes don't really like it when their dance partners could chuck them to the colonies with one arm but fuck them. rest of the story remains mostly unchanged, blah blah blah dio blah blah stone mask blah blah you know the drill ANYWAY speedwagon's first appearance is when we really start making some real impacts on joanna's character, with some definite parallels being drawn between joanna, who was lucky enough to be rich and accepted by her family (for the most part,,,) and speedwagon, who lives in the slums with no family to speak of. by proxy, some parallels to dio as well (she'll get her own ramble when I post her design in 284738374 years), because phantom blood sets up so much for a conversation about classism that we see so little of :( love phantom blood tho dgmw

also you can bet your sweet ass that hamon is becoming a metaphor for queer liberation.

don't wanna divulge too much about it cuz like I am hoping to write something about this at some point but,,, big Thoughts here trust me bro.

to address the elephant in the room, how does joanna got honkers if there was no hormone therapy in victorian times? hamon doubles as hrt. if araki's allowed to pull new hamon capabilities out of his ass every 5 seconds, so am I. it works for the metaphor too but like that's less funny.

Joanna sighs, looking down at the tiny phone screen and reading. She shoves the cellphone back in her pocket as she takes a seat, drinking time's no time for work talk. Last thing she needs is a migraine-

She ponders the drink for a moment, looking up to the bartender and, eventually, the man just a little ways away. She takes a sip of the drink as she eyes him up and down.

So I read this really good Jojo Eyes of Heaven Rewrite and I got inspired by a certain scene in chapter 3 and decided to draw my own version of Joanna from the description. The fic is called ‘I ain’t a doll, this ain’t a dollhouse’ by @vaurelias it’s so good I definitely recommend.

Situated in the middle of a smaller, more cluttered room before him was a beautiful woman with a light tan complexion. She sat seemingly lifeless on a rocking chair. A waterfall of midnight hair cascaded down her large frame. A gaudy wedding ring sat on her ring finger. She wore a form fitting deep blue dress with a v-neck that stretched down to her navel. The neckline was not to show off her body, but to make room for the large golden arrow lodged deep in her chest. Large, thorned lavender vines sprouted and writhed from the wound like a nest of bagworms to span the entire floor. They covered every surface in the room like a web.

Details of my process and version without background under the cut:

Though I took some liberties with the description of Joanna’s dress because I thought Dio would go for something more over the top then actually sexy (just look at his stupid outfit in part 3) so I went for something that was revealing but also something I could see coming from the 80s. I found a similar looking dress on Pinterest and immediately chose it as the dress.

I also wanted some flower or vine imagery around her legs so I gave her shoes inspired by Ashlynn Ella from Ever After High but with roses on the front as Dio in part 3 is surrounded by roses throughout the story. I also gave her a choker with a heart on it as a reference to Dio’s headband, and to show he sees her as his thing or his doll (ha) also kept it green so it looked out of place on purpose.

Also I know the text said the arrow is stuck in Joanna’s chest but I tried to follow that description but with the POV I wanted it wouldn’t have been possible for me to draw the arrow that way without it looking awful so she’s holding it in the art. Also very proud of myself for doing the arrow head’s details because before actually doing it I thought it’d be impossible with how detailed it looked. Yay, me!

Also just wanted to say I hate doing backgrounds, that’s why it’s not super detailed but hey, good thing Dio’s mansion is always shadowy and dark so I didn’t need to worry as much. But here’s a version of Joanna on her own, I really like it.

A secondary use for Stereo Heart it's that it can do a sound blast that sends the target flying away, this doesn't do much damage to the victim of the ability, but it is pretty good in the ways of defense.

Joanna is a combination of JoJo and Ghost In The Shell, design wise. At first her faceclaim was basically Motoko Kusanagi from 90's film, as it was the closest description to a biological daughter of her parents, Josuke and Velvet Crowe in a crossover RP on Discord years ago. Later after the story concluded, I requested my friend to have the rights to her basically. And so I wanted to give my own spin of her personality and design, and I just started watching JoJo and fell in love with Joseph. So, a lot of her design and style is very Joseph Joestar, with a tad touch of her mother with the dark and warm colors. A lot of her design, in my opinion, tells about story and connection to the Joestars and how she holds them in high regard.

Maria's design is suppose to empower magical prowess and intellect. Her cloak is much like Doctor Strange, yet she has other designs that give a tomboyish nature as well a sense of elegance. Another source of inspiration, especially in regards to her tattoos, is Miriam from Bloodstained, capable of using weapons but a sword-whip in her art was inspiring for Maria. I was even able to customize Miriam in the game to look like Maria. Lol

Despite her warm appearance she definitely harbors a cold mindset given the hardships of the world she endured and you may not know what she is planning with her many persona's.

And you cannot talk about one twin without discussing the other.

Aeon and Maria was two sides of the same coin. Their color schemes are inspired by Dante and Vergil from Devil May Cry, fitting for rival characters and being siblings. Aeon has gone through many designs but blue and gold has always been a constant theme. His design inspirations and changes are mix of several different characters. The combat readiness of Geralt, the sunny disposition of Zack Fair, and the intuitive nature of his abilities from Link. I would say he has different outfits for the weather of course, but I always felt being contrast with Maria would always fit perfectly. That and his aura abilities inspired by Lucario fit as well. He use to be a lot darker, more black than blue and a brunette with a Sasuke haircut but I think he has definitely found a more iconic design.
