Pioneer class AL1 electric locomotive No E3001 passes the Jodrell Bank telescope circa 1960. There's something very sci-fi about the appearance of the first-generation West Coast electrics. It's the raked-back cab fronts and electric blue livery that does it.

PODCAST: Michael Johnson
A muffin company wants to make more money. It’s hard to increase their current customers weekly muffin intake – so they need add some new ones. To flip muffin fans who aren’t choosing theirs, they need to tell them about their company or muffins that will get them to try one. And tell them in a way that gets their attention. But the first thing they need to do is choose who to speak to.  An ad…

The 76 Meter Lovell Radio Telescope - March 8th, 1996.
"Jodrell Bank in England is the home of the Lovell Telescope, one of the largest radio telescopes in the world. Completed in 1957 under the direction of Bernard Lovell, the 250 ft. diameter dish was the largest steerable radio telescope. The telescope has been used to monitor extremely faint radio emissions from space, including the transmissions of the Pioneer spacecraft in the distant Solar System. The telescope has been used in many astronomical investigations, including the determination of structure in local interstellar gas, searches for pulsars, determining molecular abundances towards the galactic center, and mapping hydrogen emission in galaxies."

🍏🔭🚀 Princess Anne visiting the Jodrell Bank Observatory, which was granted UNESCO status in 2019, on 30 January 2024.
During her visit, she planted a pip which was taken to the International Space Station by Tim Peake and originated in the garden that inspired Sir Isaac Newton’s theory of gravity.

I've been to Jodrell Bank Observatory a couple of times and had the tour. Astronomers get to book slots on the telescopes there (there's the giant Lovell radio telescope, and a couple of considerably smaller ones). The guard who moves people on when their time is up is always a non-scientist. This is so they won't be moved by the protests of the astronomers who want just a little bit more time. A guard who was an astronomer/scientist themself would be sympathetic and would probably be moved by puppy eyes from a fellow scientist. But as it is, they go 'nah, that's your timeslot up, time to switch'.
I had a thought today: maybe there's a similar setup in the Titan hangars. The engineers and mechanics will have to be rotated at some point to prevent fatigue, but when they're not forced to take a break, they'll just keep going until they drop from low energy levels. Part of it's because they're very dedicated to the war effort, but it's mostly because working on a Titan is the coolest thing anyone can ever do. The Titan maintenance crews might have some members from the other two factions whose job it is to push everyone out of the hangar and make them go and rest before their next shift.
