NASCAR Numerology: How NASCAR's Current Teams Got Their Numbers: Part Four.

Welcome everybody to the mission creep blog! We've done Trackhouse, Penske, Wood Brothers, RCR, SHR, Hendrick, RFK, and Spire, which means we've cleared the first ten numbers!

Today we're going to talk about:

Joe Gibbs Racing, who runs the #11, the #19, the #20, and the #54 this year.

Kaulig Racing, who runs the #13, the #16, and the #31.

Rick Ware Racing, who run the #15 and the #51,

and 23XI Racing, who run the #23, the #45, and sometimes the #50.

So, starting with Joe Gibbs Racing...and their story starts with none of their current numbers! Rather, it starts with the #18 in 1992.

Why the #18? Once again, it was a story of lowest available number, as 1-12 were taken, the #13 was being used by a part time time along with various superstitions around it, and #14, #15, #16, and #17 were taken as well. Thus, JGR debuted in 1992 with Dale Jarrett in the Interstate Batteries Chevrolet. This partnership won the Daytona 500 in 1993 and won at the fall Charlotte race in 1994, but for 1995, Dale Jarrett would leave. He moved to Yates Racing to take over the #28, subbing for the injured Ernie Irvan, and when Irvan returned to the #28 in 1996, Jarrett moved to a second Yates car, the #88.

Thus, JGR had to make their own story with Bobby Labonte, who impressed immediately by winning the 1995 Coke 600 and sweeping Charlotte.

1997 would bring only one win, at Atlanta, so for 1997, JGR switched to Pontiac. This era of JGR, with Bobby Labonte running the Interstate Batteries #18 Pontiac, is when the team really broke into the top of NASCAR.

Bobby would finish second to Dale Jarrett in 1999, but in 2000, Bobby Labonte would win the championship for JGR.

This was also the time that JGR became a two car team for the first time, but more on that in a moment.

For now, Labonte continued in JGR through the end of the 2005 season, with his last three years in a Chevrolet as GM began phasing out the Pontiac brand in NASCAR. Upon his retirement, he was replaced by JGR development driver JJ Yeley, but Yeley would only last two winless seasons.

He would be shuffled off to Hall of Fame Racing for 2008.

This is when JGR experienced its biggest change in history when, feeling like they were second or even third fiddle at Chevrolet, they switched to Toyota for the 2008 season. Toyota looked downright bad in 2007, but with a year of experience and JGR making the switch, there was hope.

Another reason to hope was that Kyle Busch, the hotheaded but fast kid from Hendrick Motorsports, made the switch, with JGR signing M&Ms as a sponsor over from Yates.

Thus, one of the most recognizable partnerships in modern NASCAR began, with Kyle Busch, Toyota, and M&Ms - they won the 2015 and 2019 championships together, took countless wins, and along with Kevin Harvick of SHR and Martin Truex Jr., Kyle formed part of the "Big Three" drivers that dominated the late Gen 6 era of NASCAR, particularly 2017-2019.

However, during the 2022 season, Mars Inc., parent company of M&Ms, announced that they were ending their NASCAR sponsorship. Kyle Busch was forced to move to the #8 car at RCR, while Joe Gibbs announced that his grandson, Ty Gibbs, would move up to the NASCAR Cup Series.

Rather than the #18, he would continue in his Xfinity number, driving the #54.

Ironically enough, the #54 originates with Kyle Busch, as Kyle Busch Motorsports has long run the #51 (a tribute to Days of Thunder antagonist Rowdy Burns, who Kyle has nicknamed himself after) and the #4 in trucks. When KBM moved up to the second-tier Nationwide series in 2012 neither number was available, so they ran the #54 instead.

Kyle and Kurt Busch split the season, with Kurt taking its only win at Richmond.

For 2013, KBM's Nationwide team was sold to Joe Gibbs Racing, where, in 2022, Ty Gibbs ran the #54 to the Xfinity series championship (for those who don't know, Busch, Nationwide, and Xfinity are all the second-tier NASCAR series, it just doesn't have a proper name so it has always been known by its title sponsor, which has changed a few times).

So, the #18 became the #54.

Meanwhile, Joe Gibbs' second number was the #20, introduced in 1999. Why the #20? Because the #19 was taken by a part-time team at the time, so the #20 was the next available number after #18. This number was initially ran by Tony Stewart with immediate success, winning the championship in 2002 with Pontiac and 2005 with Chevrolet. The Home Depot #20 was one of the iconic cars of NASCAR's boom era, and Tony Stewart was its superstar driver. In 2008, however, JGR switched to Toyota, while Tony was an all-American GM guy to his core.

The awkward partnership only lasted for one year before Tony left JGR to start his own team with Gene Haas, forming SHR.

Joey Logano replaced Tony in the #20, showing flashes of brilliance, but with only two wins in four seasons, Logano was replaced with Matt Kenseth for 2013. Logano would move to Penske, with much more success there than he had at JGR.

Matt Kenseth, meanwhile, saw the #20 switch from Home Depot sponsorship to running a Dollar General primary. Nevertheless, Kenseth showed immediate success, taking seven wins and falling just nineteen points off championship leader Jimmie Johnson.

Two years later in 2015, Kenseth was on for another championship contending season before being spun out from the lead at Kansas by none other than Joey Logano. Getting caught up in a wreck at the next race at Talladega saw Matt Kenseth get eliminated in the round of 12, while Logano won his third race in a row at Talladega to sweep the round of 12.

In retribution, at Martinsville two weeks later - the first race of the round of eight - Matt Kenseth wrecked Joey Logano as the crowd cheered. Kenseth was suspended for two races, but getting wrecked at Martinsville, a tyre problem at Texas, and failing to win Phoenix meant that Joey Logano didn't advance either.

A historic feud between drivers of the #20.

Kenseth would leave JGR after 2017, handing the #20 over to Erik Jones for three seasons, before it ended up in the hands of current driver Christopher Bell in 2021.

Bell has made the championship four in both 2022 and 2023, but finished fourth in the standings both years.

JGR's third car was the #11, co-owned by JD Gibbs and running the #11, which was the number JD used in college football at William & Mary. The #11 debuted in 2004, running various drivers such as JJ Yeley, Jason Leffler, Ricky Craven, and even Terry Labonte before settling on Denny Hamlin at the end of 2005. Hamlin went full time for 2006.

The team, with primary sponsorship from FedEx, has run ever since.

Denny Hamlin and the #11 team have won three Daytona 500s, fifty-four races, and have basically done everything in NASCAR besides winning a championship. Truly the Chicago Cubs of the stock car racing world.

Last on the list for JGR is the #19, which Joe Gibbs was finally able to secure in 2015. They had already poached Matt Kenseth from Roush for the #20, so Gibbs decided to do it again and nabbed Carl Edwards for the #19, a partnership that lasted two years before Carl abruptly retired at the end of the 2016 season for reasons NASCAR fans still speculate about to this day.

In the words of Carl Edwards himself...he had taken too many knocks to the head over the years and with him then starting a young family with a neurosurgeon wife, he decided to retire.

Daniel Suárez replaced Edwards for 2017 and 2018, before the other leading Toyota team in the form of Furniture Row Racing collapsed, giving JGR the chance to pick up 2017 champion Martin Truex Jr. for the 2019 season. Truex brought sponsors Bass Pro Shops and Auto Owners Insurance over with him.

2024, however, will be Truex's last season. Chase Briscoe will take over the #19 for 2025.

One team down.

Kaulig Racing has two full time cars, the #16 and the #31, as well as a part-time #13. The #31 is driven by Daniel Hemric, the #16 by AJ Allmendinger, Shane van Gisbergen, Josh Williams, Derek Kraus, and Ty Dillon, and the #13 has been used by Allmendinger in races where both he and SVG were running, such as COTA and Chicago.

Kaulig took #16 since it was available in 2021 (their usual Xfinity numbers, #10 and #11, were both taken), the #31 was chosen for their chartered entry for 2022 since RCR had vacated it after 2019, and the #13 because one: it was vacated, and two: it's the inverse of the #13. Yeah, not much story there, Kaulig is a new team and their numbers don't have much historic meaning behind them.

I mean, Roush ran the #16 for a long time, most successfully with Greg Biffle, but there's no link between that and Kaulig.

Kaulig does have two wins - Indianapolis Road Course 2021 and Charlotte Roval 2023 - with AJ Allmendinger, which is the most success the #16 has had since Biffle, for whatever that's worth.

Now onto Rick Ware Racing.

Rick Ware Racing has built up their history as a start-and-park team running the #51, and initially their numbering scheme was built on that, running numbers such as #52, #53, and the #54 as well. This is also the number that Rick Ware uses on its co-entries in other series, such as its alliance with Dale Coyne Racing in Indycar - where the #51 is currently run by a slew of drivers, of which Katherine Legge is expected to finish out the season - and IMSA LMP3 racing, where Rick Ware runs his son Cody.

Cody Ware was arrested in 2023 for assaulting and strangling his then girlfriend, so that's the first and only time I will mention him on this blog.

Anyway, more recently Rick Ware Racing has started professionalizing its NASCAR efforts, with Justin Haley showing promise in the #51 car that he runs in alliance with RFK Racing. Their other car, the #15, is still somewhat of a revolving door of drivers, but it does appear to be improving.

So, that's the #11, the #13, the #15, and the #16. Roush has the #17, the #18 is currently vacant, JGR has the #19 and the #20, Wood Brothers has the #21, Penske the #22...that means 23XI is next.

23Xi Racing, a joint venture by Michael Jordan (the 23 part) and Denny Hamlin (the 11 part, or XI in Roman numerals) is another new NASCAR team, having entered NASCAR in 2021 in alliance with Joe Gibbs Racing.

The history of their numbers is quite simple, the #23 is Jordan's jersey number, and the #45 is the number he wore when he returned to the Chicago Bulls in 1995 after a brief sabbatical during which time he played for the White Sox's minor league affiliates.

Bubba Wallace has run the #23 since it was established in 2021, while Kurt Busch was the initial driver of the #45 before a career-ending crash at Pocono. Ty Gibbs was drafted in to replace Kurt, before 23Xi briefly switched Bubba into the #45 to compete for the owner points playoffs. Daniel Hemric and John Hunter Nemechek also had starts in 23XI cars in 2022.

For 2023 though, Tyler Reddick has been brought in to drive the #45, winning twice in 2023, and another two times so far in 2024.

Bubba, meanwhile, won Talladega 2021 in his #23, and Kansas 2022 while filling in in the #45.

23XI's third car was initially the #67 - get it, like 2,3,4,5,6,7? - but this year, in a promotion with sponsor Mobil 1, it has run as the #50 to celebrate their 50th anniversary.

Travis Pastrana, Kamui Kobayashi, and Corey Heim have all started in the #67/#50, while Juan Pablo Montoya is scheduled to run the #50 at the 2024 NASCAR Cup race at Watkins Glen.

So yeah, we started with a college football number in the #11, and we finish on a team named after basketball numbers with 23XI.

I believe tomorrow will be the end of this series, as Front Row Motorsports with the #34 and #38, Legacy Motor Club with the #42 and the #43, and JTG Daugherty with the #47 are the only remaining full-time teams.

Higher numbers are a bit sparse in NASCAR these days, huh?

D&D Camp 1.2

DAY TWOOOOOOO!! i like to call today the "day of planning"

party managed to follow plan (ie. drop one of the enemy guards from 150ft onto the owl bear killing both)

Team ties up the final evil guard and have him pass out for a while

goblin they captured earlier is interrogated (find out he has a cute backstory, and has hopes to get money to pay for his mom's and stepdad's wedding) and is brought into the party as an apprentice to the cleric-chef

In the middle of the night, the halfling/gnome rogue goes into the bush to collect rocks but is threatened by a big-boi-goblin who wants all his money

the artificer, druid, bard, and princess come outside the carriage to investigate

artificer vortex-teleports the big0boi-mean-goblin to empty space where both the rogue and bard stab (and kill)

the bard loots the body, finds out that evil-big-boi-goblin was married so cleric brings him back to life

big-boi-goblin (Jilly Joe) turns out to hate best-boy-goblin (billy joe jr) so the party is between killing JJ agian with mushrooms or by burning him at the stake

the princess intervenes so instead the party football punts JJ into the woods never to be seen again (or will he...)

Princess has a greataxe and knows how to use it

also the bible (pronounced bih-ble) exists and tells the story of besus (son of virgin barry) smt smt and bod (not god. bod. as in body, who is a girrafe)

*insert montage sequence here where they travel, built UP the carriage, make a therapy room, and the artificer makes a homunculus name Jyee (pronounced joe)

therapy with the princess begins run by the noble-rogue and the cleric (sat in on/listened to by everyone else)

turns into planning their mission

this goes on for an out of character 1.5 hours INCLUDING their snack break! they are doing great. i know nothing of their plan

more montage... more montage... more montage (headed towards the cave which is their only free entrance into the city)

along the way, find a cuursed amulet which can grant the spell Wish three two times (used for donuts)

everyone argues about if they should give the bracelet to the princess

i walk away and tell them that they need to work together as a team (to catch my breath and to help defuse tension)

I come back and they are happy and smiling

adulting (im 16/17) works.

I'm sort of obsessed with Jo having a kid now, whether biological or adopted, and all those cute little ideas we discussed with the outfit and chopping wood... I crave seeing all this in story form! <3

So this is inspired by the picture you sent me (below). Hope it cheers you up, friend! (sorry it took me a bit to answer this!)

“Come on, JJ (short for Joe Jr), I’m going to teach you how to chop wood with the Christmas tree.” Johanna calls out to her son, who is sitting on the living room floor and intensely preoccupied with his new log cabin Lego set.

He looks up at her, Lego pieces in his hand. “Why the Christmas tree?”

“Because Christmas is over so we’re going to recycle the tree for firewood.” Jo states matter-of-factly, one hand holding an ax and the other curled up towards her shoulder hugging the base of a Christmas tree. “And I’m going to teach you the ways of our ancestors.” She then walks out the front door, the Christmas tree dragging behind her.

JJ reluctantly drops the Lego pieces back to the floor and follows his mom outside.

“Alright, squirt, I’m going to show you what to do, and then you’re going to try it.” Her tone is nonchalant.

JJ throws her a bewildered look. “But isn’t that ax too big for me?”

Jo pulls a smaller ax seemingly out of nowhere and holds it out to him. “That’s why I bought this. Don’t make me regret it.”

Her son hesitantly grabs the ax. “Okay.”

“Now let me show you how to do this.”

For the next half hour, Johanna teaches JJ how to chop wood and watches him try it out on his own. Let’s just say the apple doesn’t fall from the tree. Jo is an immensely proud mama; her little man is a natural lumberjack.

Kohrville,TX My lil piece of Heaven

I grew up on the outskirts of Houston, Tx in a small community named Khorville. Khorville was founded by freed slaves who migrated from Alabama, and named after German immigrant Paul Kohrman. Kohrman became the first postmaster of the community. According to online sources, More than 100 families resides in Khorville by the 1960’s and faced economic hardships. Records show that in 1990’s the population of Khorville had decreased by half to fifty families. Despite it’s humble beginnings , Khorville’s African-American cemetery ,that was established in 1881 was recognized as a state monument in 2016. The historical context mentioned above was derived from research; although the information might be true, it does not properly depict Khorville from my point-of-view. So let’s get started with Khorville from my perspective: I was Born 8/13/1986 to Margaret and Donnie Lawrence. My brother is the one who named me Gregory Wayne Lawrence.

It was so much fun growing up. I grew up in a village where everyone looked out for everyone. Neighbors weren’t just neighbors, we were family. When standing in my front yard, I could look across the street and see the homes of my cousins Raymond and Pac-Man, my God sister Connie and my Aunt Dorothy and Cousin Mark. The remainder of this post will identify and describe some of the families in the community as I remember it. My hope is to shed light on how close knit we were and how it impacted me, which ultimately inspired this writing. Let’s get to it. Next door to Pac- Man and Raymond lived Uncle Buddy and Aunt Annie with their children Donald, Bae Bae, and Anthony. They had two dogs; one named Speedy and another one named Smokey. Uncle Oscar and my Nanny lived further down the street with my cousins Sheryl, Sandra, Kelvin, Tiny and Jennifer. Kelvin had a family of his own. He and his wife Jennifer had two children named Anthony and Jalica. At their home you would see chickens and hogs. Next door to the right of my house lived Reverend Thomas, Mrs .Debra, Roderick, Sheniqua,JJ and Derrick. My Aunt Helen, my cousins Joe Nathan,Tony and Steven lived next door to the left of me. They had a dog named “Shit Head”. The Whitfield family stayed in close proximity to my Uncle Bubu, Aunt Kathy, John John , Aunt Fae, Keisha and Karissa. My Uncle Lonnie Green and my Aunt Kathrine lived with their children Deshone and Shemitra. It should be noted that my God parents Kenny and Ellen Green along with my sister Candace spent a lot of time in the community. My uncle Carl, uncle Boots, my Aunt Maggie and my cousin John Jr. also lived close by. Further east Was Mrs. Jean Green, Mike Green one of the coldest football players, Mario, and Marquee, go down a little further east It was Mrs. Thelma Cossey and last house going east Was Mr. Wilbert Cossey, and Mrs. Joyce Cossey and Mark, Mika and Megan. My Aunt Annie and Uncle Carl Ray lived with their children Pumpkin and Maceo Next came my Uncle Neal and Aunt Bee. Mrs.Lord lived across the street from Aunt Versie, Ursula, Dimelle abs next to them was Mrs. Shirley Blacksur, Mr. Mack, Penny and Eddy, Alicia, Sandra and Major. Khorville is a place I hold most dear to my heart. The families mentioned are the people who have always loved me unconditionally. Without them I would not have learned some lessons and missed out on some great times. I wouldn’t be the man I am today. Kohrville, Texas we will be known all around the world one day. Remember, I said it.

Well, it is none other than Virginia Thomas, wife of Supreme Court justice Clarence. She calls it the list of snakes. Trump is now saying he even wants liberal judges on the Supreme Court to recuse themselves when it comes to “Trump related cases”. It just keeps getting worse.

Andrew Yang is a new correspondent at CNN. He tells us that he is getting word from former donors that Bloomberg is calling those big donors. Allegedly he is telling them they do not have to donate to his campaign because he can afford his own campaign but he still won’t forget them. He would like them to save their money and not give money to other democrats running either.** And I am so sick of talking heads trying to tell us to play it safe. We are not as stupid as we look, thank you!! ** Now there is a firestorm about Bernie telling the world that the education program that Castro implemented was a good thing. I understand the anger and it could not have come at a worse time and he did it to himself. BUT.. We are adults and we have to be able to talk about things as they really are, not in sound bites. Castro sucked and history teaches us that bad people do good things occasionally and good people do bad things once in a while. ** It seems that everyone was in agreement that we would all gather behind the winner of the democratic campaign to beat Trump. Suddenly when it could be Bernie, everybody is bitching.

This month held 2 more Democratic debates. The Nevada debate got pretty heated. I see that Mayor Pete and Bloomberg are lefties (left handed that is). Pete always looked poised and articulate which I appreciate and he got in a good one when he mentioned that the party should choose someone who is actually a democrat. Bernie seemed a little rattled by that. Later Pete really dressed down Amy Klobuchar and made himself look like a dick. Joe Biden jumped in with his credits occasionally but often seemed a bit lost. He slammed back that they were all talking about the health care plane he helped to create and that he himself had dealt with the Mexican President. His name came up after it was mentioned that Amy could not remember the President’s name. The gloves were off with Bloomberg as Elizabeth Warren called him out on Billionaires and NDA’s. I loved the interaction but realistically Mr. Mike can’t just release people from agreements they made in an NDA, especially if it did not involve him. Bloomberg sounded pompous and clueless about the world outside of his company. He got a moan when he said he couldn’t exactly use turbo tax and when he said he may have told a few jokes that women didn’t like. He brushed off his taxes much like Trump does. The former mayor of NY called out socialists as communists. Klobuchar had the best comeback of the night when she was told her health care plan could fit on a post it. She proclaimed that the post it was invented in her state of Minnesota. Again, there were people shouting from the audience as Joe tried to talk. C’mon give everybody an equal chance.

The South Carolina debate was fiery as well. The CBS debate was hosted by Gayle King and Norah O’Donnell. Bloomberg was booed right off the bat about Russia helping Bernie but he late had many cheers. He and Biden and Steyer had some real support there. Tom Steyer was actually quite impressive and seemed well spoken. He was the only one who brought up the impeachment. He had a great point that we all know that republicans who did not convict Trump are complicit in the Russian meddling. Then he ruined it all by being alarmist with his fear. He warned us off the former republican and the socialists. I loved Bernie’s ideas about small business’s getting in on the marijuana business and not letting big corporations taking it over. He is also the only one in debates that I have seen consistently bring up Native Americans. Biden again kept jumping in to tell us that he did this or that. Amy disagreed about a bill he claimed to have written. Warren said “dig in” numerous times. She went for the jugular with Bloomberg when she said a former female employee of his said to “kill it” in response to her pregnancy. He denied it but it sure is memorable. She did make great points that he has given much money to Linsey Graham’s campaign as well as other republican runs including against her. BTW he also gave 2.3 mil to Rick Snyder, the Gov of Michigan after the water crisis was well known. I love that Amy is always saying that we shouldn’t fight amongst ourselves but she just does not have the votes so she needs to go. Bernie got some boos about guns for he seems the softest in that area.

The final Criminal Minds has aired. CBS often aired double episodes which made it seem like they really wanted to get rid of it. Kirsten Vangsness and Erica Messer wrote the final episode which seemed to give special attention to Penelope and Reid as they were the originals. The other characters seemed a little overlooked but they all had happy endings. Where was Reid’s new girlfriend? I was hoping to see Shemar Moore but it was great to see Reisgraf and Howell which are old favorites.

She’s the oldest child, born on January 8, 2018

Like both parents, she is a speedster metahuman

Unlike Dawn, she’s still learning the language of the Speed Force

She can understand better than she can speak it and she can’t write anything at all except that stupid “This house is bitchin’” reference

Growing up, she was always affectionately called ‘Kid Flash’ by her Uncle Barry

Her dad has long let go of the hero name Kid Flash and instead goes by Flash but only when he’s with the Legends; when he’s chilling in CC, the locals still refer to him as Kid Flash

So now she’s the newest Kid Flash of Central City in Earth-1

Thank goodness that she didn’t go through the same dilemma about her hero name like her cousin Connor did

Her suit kind of resembles that of her mother’s but has a lot more yellow incorporated in it as a tribute to her father of course

She also added laces at the sides as a tribute to her other mother

She occasionally visits Earth-2 to visit her Grampa Harry, where people over there call her Flash Jr.

Meh she doesn’t complain too much about it

She mostly trains with Team Flash since it’s easier receiving instruction from other speedsters who’ve already honed in on their skills

Sometimes, she’ll head on over to Earth-38 to train with Alex Danvers because apparently her combat skills still suck but only if Dawn is there

Connor, even though she loves him, is a headache

Having graduated from high school early (at fifteen), she chose to attend college over on Earth-2 so she could have multiple majors with no one looking at her funny for being an overachiever

She knows she’s probably slowly burning herself out but she loves the material as much as she loves saving people

Although she does complain a lot about the amount of work she has to do every day to her friends, siblings and cousins

She still has no idea what she’ll do once she’s done with her degrees

Meh she’ll probably end up working for STAR Labs

She just has to figure out if that means Earth-1 STAR Labs or Earth-2 STAR Labs

Iris was pretty mad that Thea got Oliver, Barry and Kara’s kid to be named after her and when Barry confirmed that they weren’t planning on having any more kids, she promptly turned to her other brother and demanded that their first daughter will be named after her

Unlike Dawn though who is referred to by her middle name, she is referred to by her nickname: Irey

Thea tried teaching her archery but she’s so bad at it because grabbing an arrow, pulling back and aiming all take time and she doesn’t like things that take time

She’s an incredible multitasker

And that actually has nothing to do with her speed; she just doesn’t like wasting time

Connor likes to make her race him but, like his races with Dawn, he ends up losing

She’s a bit slower than Dawn but at least she’s still faster than Connor

She’s closest with her Aunt Iris, Pawpaw Joe, Zari, Ray and Grampa Harry.

He was once, in fact, a speedster like his twin

However, after years of already having his powers, Caitlin had belatedly found an anomaly in his DNA

He began to become horribly sick, which seemed to worsen by the day

No one knew why at first until Caitlin, Cisco, Alex and Jesse realized it had something to do with the Speed Force

It wasn’t their parents or any of the veteran heroes that saved him but his twin

“I’m sorry, JJ, but the Speed Force said the only way to save you was to sever your connection to it and...”

“Hey, it’s cool, sis. You saved my life. I owe you one.”

His nickname is JJ

He got his first name by Thea opening up a baby book and blindly pointing at one of the names

He got his second name as a tribute to Jay Garrick, who helped save Wally from imprisonment in the Speed Force by taking his place

He’s affectionately called Johnny Quick by Team Flash, especially when he still had his powers

They don’t call him that as much anymore, out of respect that he’s essentially had an important part of himself ripped away and calling him that would just be a cruel reminder

He’s a brilliant engineer but not so much an excellent student

He’s not the greatest at tests (why do schools rely on memorization as a way of measuring intelligence instead of actually measuring their intelligence?) but you could give him just about anything broken without saying anything and it’ll take some time for him to figure out what’s wrong before fixing that thing better than it ever was in an hour

Having Connor as a cousin and a constant presence had really made him consider not going to college at all but he found this university that cultivates knowledge and favors experience over stuff like tests so he applied and that’s where he’s attending college

Since William’s place is pretty close to the college, William offered him the other guest room since the bigger one is unofficially Connor’s

It’s been pretty dope so far

He really wants to take on the family business of becoming a superhero but ever since he lost his powers, it really felt like he lost his identity and was stripped of his heritage

Obviously, he doesn’t need powers to become a hero but having the Speed Force severed from him was traumatic

He’ll probably take up John Diggle’s offer or even Alex Danvers’ offer of training properly with their respective agencies, but for now he just wants to distance himself from all that insanity and try to live a regular life

Had he still had his powers, he says his code name would have been ‘Impulse’

Like his father, he’s an incredibly talented dancer

When they both have some free time, he’d team up with Dawn for mini-performances for places that would hook them up with a gig

He’s suspected to be dating someone but will deny for as long as he can

He’s closest to William, Cisco, Nate, Felicity, Winn, Curtis and Uncle Barry

He calls Wally “Dad”

Wally and Thea’s child

She is the last born but only by a few months

She was born on June 1, 2018

Her parents expected her to be a regular baby, but Caitlin did some tests and actually found the metagene present in her DNA

Her powers started manifesting when she was a toddler

She was definitely more problematic as a child compared to Irey and JJ when they too got their powers

She was a brat and often asked for attention, barely acknowledging her siblings except when she really had to or wanted something in return

That all changed when JJ started getting sick

She was actually the first person to witness JJ’s descent into his sickness when he passed out shortly after vomiting what seemed like the entirety of his lunch and maybe even breakfast too

Then Irey got hurt pretty bad on what was supposed to be a relatively easy mission

Now she’s extremely protective of her siblings, especially when it concerns Irey’s missions or JJ’s love life

Oh by the way, she’s definitely sure JJ is dating someone, despite his claims that he’s not

She has absolutely no proof but...

She just knows okay?

She can feel it

She is most definitely spoiled but not to Dawn’s level

Unlike her siblings, she’s not that great at being an intellectual

She considers herself average

When someone argues that she had straight A’s and did extracurriculars in high school, she points out that she worked hard for them, not because she’s a genius like her siblings

She’ll also be going to college but took a gap year to help her sister (and occasionally her cousins too) as a vigilante

Since Thea retired, she stole inherited her mother’s suit and mask sans the bow

She can do archery just fine; she just prefers using her speed over using arrows

Archery is something she loves doing but only recreationally

Intentionally shooting people is something she has a problem reconciling with

Since she’s not creative at all with names or even have the desire to think of one, she just took the name Speedy but it wasn’t her idea

For a while, she operated without a code name, which was obviously problematic since calling her by her real name on the field wasn’t at all doable

One day, while visiting Team Arrow Jr Team Light Team Light Arrow her brother’s kids team, with Irey and Liv teaming up with them, Thea slammed her hands on William’s desk and, through the comms, angrily told Liv to just take the name Speedy so her civilian identity wouldn’t get compromised simply because they had nothing to call her

So that’s how she got the code name ‘Speedy’

She sees Dawn as a little sister and Connor almost like a best friend (almost only because John Diggle Jr. would kick her ass)

She doesn’t see William as often as she sees Dawn and Connor but she loves him all the same

Connor keeps pushing to have a race with him and the others

She always shoots him down because she knows her limits

She knows she’s definitely slower than both Dawn and Irey

She doesn’t know if she’s slower than Connor though

She doesn’t race them because, in the end, hero-ing isn’t her calling like it is for Dawn, Irey and Connor

She just helps them out because she has the ability to

She’s obviously named after Oliver because Oliver made Thea name her after him

The Life of Captain Marvel - issue #1

So here we are. Issue #1 of The Life of Captain Marvel, the miniseries that was touted as a bold new origin story that would change everything we thought we knew about Carol Danvers.

And it starts strong by exploiting family violence, trauma, mental illness and traumatic brain injury for melodramatic effect, with no intention of dealing with any of these complex themes in any depth or sensitivity.

For all that, infuriatingly little actually happens in this first issue. No exaggeration, the issue actually includes a stretch of nine months wherein Carol essentially does nothing except mope and grow her hair out. The dang plot doesn’t even arrive until the final seven pages.

Content warning: This issue begins with a flashback to Joe Danvers verbally abusing and hitting his kids. I haven’t included any images, but I talk at some length about Margaret Stohl’s abysmal handling of themes of abuse and family violence. Just a heads up.

The story opens on a flashback to an idyllic childhood holiday in Harpswell, Maine. There’s a montage of Carol and her brothers flying kites, wrestling each other, splashing in the water and stuffing their faces with candy, while adult Carol muses that she used to think her family was perfect.

Then the flashback takes a turn. One of Carol’s brothers rips the kite from her hand, tearing it. Their father, Joe, descends on the boys in a rage and begins verbally abusing and physically beating them as Carol looks on, because — surprise! — it’s Traumatic Past Retcon time!

Goodbye Joe Danvers, well-meaning but hard-headed dad who’s never understood his daughter and whose approval always seems to be out of reach. Hello Joe Danvers v. 2.0, scary unpredictable drunk who hit his kids and terrorised his entire family. Aren’t comics fun?

The flashbacks are interspersed with shots of Carol in the present day, where she’s battling supervillains Tanalth and Moonstone. As the flashback progresses, present-day Carol lashes out violently, alarming friends and foes alike.

“That’s why fighting’s easier than remembering. I tell myself that if I’m strong enough… I’ll beat the memories down so hard they’ll never come back.”

What’s strange to me about this page is the way it deliberately draws a parallel between Joe, snarling and raising his fist to strike his powerless young children, and Carol, snarling and raising her fist to strike down a powerful villain. By implication, it places Carol in the role of abuser, indicating an intergenerational cycle of violence.

Which of course is never explored or discussed beyond this, because Stohl doesn’t want to actually talk about the lasting impacts and terrible toll of family violence, she just wants to exploit it for THE DRAMAS.

As Joe whales on his sons, kid!Carol tries to run to their defence, only to be held back by mother Marie, who tells her, “You’ll just make it worse. Now’s not the time.”

We will be told numerous times over the course of this book what an incredible, loving mother Marie Danvers is, and how she’s prepared to sacrifice everything for Carol. Her actions, though? Her actions consistently portray a woman whose number one interest is in not creating more work or emotional angst for herself, even when it means hanging Carol out to dry.

This is not to say that Marie isn’t a victim as well in this scenario: though she never fears for her life or safety (she could pummel Joe into the ground without breaking a sweat), it could well be that constant gaslighting and emotional abuse have left her feeling unable to oppose her husband in anything.

It could well be, but that is nuance that Stohl is not interested in exploring, and all we get throughout this miniseries is Marie making excuses for Joe’s abusive behaviour and prioritising her own comfort over Carol’s emotional wellbeing and safety.

So anyway, flashback!Marie says “Now’s not the time”, and in the present day Carol shrieks “WHEN - IS - THE TIME?!” while damn near beating Moonstone into a pulp.

The other Avengers are disturbed by this.

Iron Man: Hey, Carol? Could you maybe leave a little something on the plate for… you know… bad guy jail? Black Panther: Would you call that rage… disproportionate?

hellooooo unfortunate paternalistic implications. A female superhero has a hysterical outburst on the battlefield, while her almost exclusively male colleagues look on in bewilderment. (‘This is why women can’t be superheroes, they’re too emotional!!!’)

Cap and T’Challa have to physically pull Carol off Moonstone, as Carol begins to hyperventilate.

Adding to our list of things that this series has zero interest in exploring:

What it’s like to experience a panic attack or traumatic flashback

What it’s like to live with an anxiety disorder

What it’s like to live with trauma

The Carol of this story is not a woman living with trauma and mental illness, she is a woman who swoons hysterically whenever the narrative starts drag a bit. Her panic attacks are purely a plot device used to ratchet up the dramatic tension at convenient moments, and it’s some of the most insensitive handling of mental illness I’ve seen in comics for a while.

Next comes the obligatory scene of Carol getting a full medical in Tony’s lab, only for Tony to throw his hands up and declare, ‘welp, there’s nothing physically wrong with you, are you sure there’s not something else going on????’. Because apparently neither Tony — who has personal experience with trauma — nor Steve — who lived through a FUCKING WAR — know PTSD when it’s punching them (well, Tanalth and Moonstone) in the face.

I mean REALLY.

Tony: Look, the breathing thing is probably some kinda nervous tic.

hi, hello, person with an anxiety disorder here, please do not tell somebody having a full-blown panic attack that it’s just a ‘nervous tic’, you absolute insensitive fuckstick.

Carol: [sigh] It’s… Father’s Day. Not my favourite day of the year, you know?

waitwaitwait, so CAROL recognised that she’d triggered and experienced a traumatic flashback, but for some reason decided to play dumb about it until she’d after she’d had a pointless medical examination??

Tony tells Carol she needs to get herself sorted out or else somebody is going to get hurt, so she goes to visit her mother and younger brother Joe Junior at the family’s holiday home in Maine.

Carol flies into town past a sign that reads, “Harpswell Sound / Summer Home of Captain Marvel” Carol: [narration] Oh, brother.

‘Oh, brother’ is right. I guess at least it isn’t as embarrassing as the time Stohl introduced a D-grade Captain Marvel TV series.

“Sugar’s Donuts / Official Donut of Captain Marvel”

hoookay yep that’s a bit much now.

At the donut shop, Carol runs into childhood friend Louis Lee, who’s grown into a Designated Love Interest with an obnoxious phonetically-spelled accent

“Better keep that to yah self, Ms. Danvers. Wouldn’t wantitah get out that yah cheatin’ on us…”

I despise him already.

Carol goes up to the house and hangs out with her mother and brother. Over dinner, Marie and JJ ask her why she’s dropped by so suddenly. Carol evades and JJ blows up at her because apparently he’s been holding in some anger about how he feels she abandoned the family and didn’t even bother to come home when their dad was terminally ill. (Which, hey, here’s another potentially rich thread to explore — PITY IT NEVER COMES UP BETWEEN THEM EVER AGAIN.)

Carol shoots back that he knows full well she was avoiding home because of their abusive father, only to be interrupted by the door slamming as their mother walks out.

…eeeeeexcept apparently that was an art mistake, because the very next page is Carol chasing after her brother, the one who actually stormed out. She finds him at their father’s grave, drinking booze.

He offers his recovering alcoholic sister the bottle, and when she lightly turns it down he gripes that she’d always thought she was better than everybody else and she should feel free to piss off any time now. Then he gets into his car and Carol lets him drive home drunk like the responsible person she is.

“Part of me knew I should go after Joe Jr. I mean, nobody in my family was any good with a bottle.”

WHAT IN THE HELL, CAROL.

But nah, see, she has more important things to do, like scream at her dead father and desecrate his headstone, because that’s sure not going to upset her family further, nope.

Her little tantrum is interrupted by the sound of tyres screeching and a car plunging off a bridge because YOU FUCKING MORON you stood there and watched your brother stagger drunk into his car and made the conscious decision that ‘nah, I’m gonna let this one play out’.

and ohohohohoho how ~poetic~! He crashed right through the ‘Summer Home of Captain Marvel’

god I hate everything in this comic.

JJ is rushed to hospital, where he is diagnosed with a traumatic brain injury, leaving him in a catatonic state.

And of course, Stohl’s Carol makes it all about her-fucking-self.

“In an instant, everything changes. You ruin someone’s life… it ruins yours right back. You’d give everything to have gone after him… and acted like the hero you’re supposed to be.”

Yes, JJ is in a coma with a traumatic brain injury, but let’s talk about how his near-fatal car accident ruined Carol’s life.

Anyway— NINE MONTHS LATER.

No, really.

We just skip over nine months.

Wherein apparently Carol has been doing nothing but poor-me-ing over her brother’s hospital bed.

Like.

She gave up her entire life and career.

Stopped saving the world.

Stopped interacting with everybody.

Just sat by JJ’s hospital bed looking melancholy and growing her hair out so that comic bros would stop complaining that she looked like a lesbian.

Tony tries texting her and she turns off her phone. So he appears beside her in an explosion of pixels.

which-- how?!?

There’s no visible technology at work here, nothing to indicate what’s projecting his image or enabling the two of them to communicate. Tony might as well be speaking to Carol via magic, for all we can tell.

Christ, it’s a superhero comic, it’s not like you have to work that hard to sell it to the reader. Two lines of dialogue: ‘What the actual hell, Tony?’ ‘Well, you wouldn’t return my calls, so I [insert technobabble here].’ That’s all you need. How lazy can you get?

Tony asks her to come back to the Avengers — we miss you, we need you, this isn’t good for you, etc. — and Carol’s like, ‘nah, I’m too busy wallowing in self-pity’.

And yes, like Carol’s PTSD and panic attacks, like the family violence, JJ’s brain injury exists solely here as a plot device. It’s not a disability he lives with or a trauma he survives, it’s a vehicle to bring melodrama to Carol’s story and a weakly-fabricated excuse for Carol to stay with the family and discover what she’s about to discover.

Because now it’s time to bring the still-catatonic JJ back home. And since the downstairs living room is more accessible than his upstairs bedroom, he’ll be taking the couch, where Carol has been crashing.

Yes, even though Carol has her own childhood bedroom in this house — we see it next issue — she has been couch-surfing for nine months. But now that somebody else has claimed her spot, she’s got to move into… JJ’s bedroom.

So she goes up the room and rather rudely starts going through her catatonic brother’s wardrobe and pulling his clothes out to make room for her own shit. Again, I cannot stress enough that she had her own bedroom in this house. She’s just… weirdly choosing to impose on everybody else.

In the wardrobe, Carol finds a box belonging to her dead father. The box contains a love letter, in Joe’s handwriting, addressed to a woman who is not his wife — along with what is obviously a piece of alien technology.

This is a comic with a goddamn identity crisis. It keeps tossing out plot hooks, only to abandon them pages later in favour of the next shiny idea.

It begins by announcing, ‘This is a story about Carol returning home and confronting her childhood trauma.’ Then it abruptly swerves: ‘wait, scratch that, this is a story about Carol struggling to hold her fractured family together after her brother is hurt in an accident she had the power to prevent’, and then, ‘hold up hold up what we meant to say was, this is a story about Carol discovering a hidden truth about her family and parentage’.

It’s like Stohl doesn’t know editing exists. Because spoiler alert: this story is not about either of those first two things. The first fifteen pages of this issue are a dead fucking weight. They do not need to be there, and in fact a lot of problems could have been solved by cutting them.

Carol decides to spend some time with her family because she’s working through some personal shit, and discovers a letter hinting that her late father was leading a double life. That’s it; that’s the story.

All these convoluted logistics around who gets the couch and who gets the bedroom? Not necessary. Again, Carol has a bedroom in this house. Since she’s not around much, it makes sense that Marie might be using it as a general storage space. So: Carol is staying in her old room and has to shift a few boxes to make space. In the process, her dad’s shoebox gets knocked loose from whatever nook it was stuffed into. THERE. EASY. DONE. PLOT UNLOCKED.

Like, the car accident actually makes it harder to get Carol to that point. The only reason I can see for it being there at all is to force the passage of time so that Carol can grow her hair out and dudebros can stop complaining that she’s unattractive. Because I guess it just never occurred to anybody that they could draw her with long hair to start with?

But ‘oh no, the aliens and the superpowers I can accept, but in the last comic I read Carol had short hair and I AM SORRY BUT there is NO WAY human hair grows that fast, this is BEYOND THE PALE’.

Oh, and can we talk about how Carol’s response to finding OBVIOUS ALIEN TECHNOLOGY is to go, ‘huh, I wonder what this is, let’s see if I can open it by smashing it repeatedly with a hammer’??

Carol: Huh. Let’s see if we can open it. [starts bashing the device wildly] Gah! Why — won’t — you— Marie: [off-panel] Carol! Can you help me with Joe’s tube? Carol: [wandering off as the device activates] Coming, Ma!

And then IMMEDIATELY GETS DISTRACTED AND WANDERS THE FUCK OFF, failing to notice that the OBVIOUS ALIEN DEVICE has suddenly activated and is now beeping ominously????

So while Carol blunders around obliviously, the obvious alien device sends a signal to a galaxy far far away, which in turn activates what is seriously and embarrassingly called a Kree Kleaner. A small spherical vessel orbiting a distant planet lights up and begin speeding towards Earth, while inside some kind of Kree cyborg gestates and grows to maturity at a rapid rate.

Meanwhile Carol sits by the sea with Digital Tony and mopes that “I knew my family wasn’t perfect… but I thought love was”.

Look, I recognise that trauma is complicated and that family shit is even more so. I know people process and cope with things in different ways and at different speeds. And for Carol to suddenly discover that, on top of all the grief he was causing at home, her father was leading some kind of secret life with another women, must surely feel fucking horrible and bring up a lot of deeply painful memories.

But her reaction doesn’t gel with everything Stohl has told us about Carol’s relationship with her father.

We’ve been told that Joseph Danvers was a physically and verbally abusive alcoholic who terrorised his family to the point where, to this day, Carol struggles with PTSD and anxiety attacks. We’ve been told that Carol thinks of him as a mean, violent drunk who even in death haunts her family. She doesn’t understand why her mother stayed with him or why her brother still defends him, when all he ever did was make all of them feel small and powerless.

The idea that Carol would think all of this and yet still be totally blindsided to learn that Joe and Marie’s marriage was not a true-love-fairytale-romance is utterly, outrageously laughable.

Stohl presents the letter as bombshell that overturns everything Carol thought she knew about her family, indicating that Joe was leading a secret life she never knew about. It’s not. All it is is a confirmation of everything we’re told Carol already thinks about her father: that he was a cruel, self-absorbed bastard who treated his family like crap. You know what is a fucking bombshell?

The fact that Joe Danvers apparently had personal access to OBVIOUS ALIEN TECHNOLOGY.

AND AS FOR THIS LINE.

“And like they say, families were made to be broken.”

literally nobody says this.

I even checked, just to be fair to this comic, on the off-chance that it was in fact a thing.

One of the six search results is somebody on instagram quoting this comic. The other five are all related to the title of a single playlist on 8tracks.

But hey, like they say, Margaret Stohl is a fucking hack.

For my friends in the Nakamichi Audiophile Group: I used good old Maxell Type II cassette tapes for this live recording date I personally recorded on my Nakamichi 550, which I am the original owner purchaser of - I plunked down $550 cash for my Nak at Harvey Electronics on W. 45th Street NYC in 1976 - I made this recording with 3 Sennheiser microphones placed around the bandstand in the Ellington Room - the tune "No X-Cess Baggage Blues" I wrote for my friends at PIA Pakistan International Airlines - they very kindly let me take excess baggage on numerous flights I made with them out of John F. Kennedy International Airport - when you play Hammond Organ, it's impossible to travel light.
