TECNOSTALGIA

In discussing the importance of location scouting, Hancock noted that “noise, too, is a tremendous factor… the absence thereof.” The house was a perfectly quiet set for more dialogue-heavy scenes, and its interiors were visually compatible with a farmhouse exterior that was, in reality, located three miles away in Old Saybrook.
Large, old Victorian houses have been woven into the American horror lexicon as inherently spooky in everything from “The Addams Family” and 1986’s House to Hitchcock’s Psycho. “That scary house exterior was a real find,” Hancock said. “I’d hate to see the movie without it.”
The Victorian-style “old Bishop House,” with its distinctive tower, is one of the more consistently striking visuals in the film, mostly framed in long shots against an overcast sky at dusk or bathed in a dreary fog. Originally built in the 19th century, it still stands to the present day. “Given the period houses, beautiful foliage, and picturesque country lanes, the Old Saybrook area is ideal for filmmaking, especially the horror genre,” Badalato added.

Blu-ray Review: Unearthed & Untold: The Path to Pet Sematary
Tumblr media
Although Pet Sematary may not quite make it into the top echelon of Stephen King adaptations, it certainly ranks among the better films with the king of horror’s name on it. It’s notable because, unlike any of the previous adaptations of his work, King (who also penned the screenplay) insisted Pet Sematary be filmed in his old stomping grounds of Maine. Unearthed & Untold: The Path to Pet Sematary is a documentary chronicling the making of the 1989 film.
King unfortunately opted not to participate in the film (although he does appear in archival material), but, with the exception of the late Fred Gwynne, nearly every cast member is accounted for. All the main stars (Dale Midkiff, Denise Crosby, Brad Greenquist, Mike Hughes, Susan Blommaert, Andrew Hubatsek, et al.) are present, and so too are various extras and locals who excitedly worked on the film when Hollywood came to rural Maine. Much of the talent from behind the camera is interviewed as well, including director Mary Lambert, cinematographer Peter Stein, and composer Elliot Goldenthal.
Tumblr media
A Nightmare on Elm Street star Heather Langenkamp (who became engaged to special effects artist Dave Anderson on the film), '80s favorite Dee Wallace (who starred in Cujo, another King adaptation involving animals), the Ramones drummer Marky Ramone (who plays on the film's theme song), and various fans, historians, and experts are also featured. Unearthed & Untold co-directors John Campopiano and Justin White occasionally appear on screen to share anecdotes that they do not have on video otherwise. They were unable to use any footage from the actual film, but there’s plenty to keep it interesting.
Unearthed & Untold begins with a voice over from Lindsay Doran, the Paramount Pictures executive who championed the movie, while a transcription of her audio scrolls up the screen. Although the story provides valuable insight into the film's conception, it's a curious choice that lacks panache to kick off a film. From there, it goes to a more logical place: the origins of King's book, which is said to be inspired by such classic genre literature as Frankenstein, Dracula, The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, and "The Monkey's Paw."
Tumblr media
The narrative then sets the stage for the film, breaking down the cast - including working with children and animals, as well as the decision to cast a male in the unforgettable part of Zelda. Shooting on location in Maine is discussed at length, supplemented by rare (and, in some case, never-before-seen) photos and footage from the set, in addition to revisiting the locations as they appear today. The film’s 1992 sequel goes unmentioned; it needn't be a major point, but its absence feels like an oversight considering Lambert returned to direct.
Originally released by Terror Films, Synapse Films is distributing the documentary on Blu-ray. Special features include two audio commentaries with Campopiano and White (one a traditional commentary, the other a podcast interview from Halloweekly), 18 minutes of deleted scenes, eight minutes alternate edits of existing scenes, an interview with Campopiano and White, a compilation of location photos, a poster art concept gallery, six minutes of VHS footage from the Pet Sematary set, a sizzle reel, and a trailer.
Tumblr media
Unearthed & Untold: The Path to Pet Sematary could have been a great special feature on a special edition Pet Sematary Blu-ray, but it's substantial enough to warrant its own release with extras. The production of Pet Sematary may not have been particularly eventful - by all accounts, things seem to have run pretty smoothly with little drama - but Unearthed & Untold provides an exhaustively thorough retrospective on the cult classic.
Unearthed & Untold: The Path to Pet Sematary is on Blu-ray now via Synapse Films.
