"Lust for Life" is a 1977 song performed by American singer Iggy Pop and co-written by David Bowie, featured on the album of the same name. The song is known for its opening drumbeat, played by Hunt Sales. The rhythm was based on the Armed Forces Network call signal, which Pop and Bowie picked up on while waiting for a broadcast of Starsky & Hutch. The drumbeat has since been imitated in numerous songs, including "Are You Gonna Be My Girl" by Jet and "Selfish Jean" by Travis; however, Sales's use of the rhythm was not original, as it was itself derived from "You Can't Hurry Love", released in July 1966 by The Supremes, and "I'm Ready for Love", released in October 1966 by Martha and the Vandellas.
The song's lyrics contain a number of references to William S. Burroughs' experimental novel The Ticket That Exploded, most notably mentions of "Johnny Yen" (described by Burroughs as "The Boy-Girl Other Half strip tease God of sexual frustration") and "hypnotizing chickens".
In a 1995 interview, Doors keyboardist Ray Manzarek and manager Danny Sugerman stated that the opening lyrics were about their deceased heroin dealer, nicknamed "Gypsy Johnny", arriving at Wonderland Avenue, with his heroin and his "motorized dildos".
"Lust for Life" gained renewed popularity in the late 1990s after being featured in the 1996 British film Trainspotting. The song was heavily featured in the film's marketing campaign and subsequent soundtrack album, resulting in a new UK chart peak of number 26 after being reissued as a single. It also reached number 39 on the US Radio & Records Alternative chart, number 44 in Canada, and number 2 in Iceland. A remix by the Prodigy was included in Trainspotting's 2017 sequel, T2 Trainspotting.
"Lust for Life" received a total of 72,7% yes votes!
On this day, 10 years ago, on July 7th, 2014, "Doraemon: Gadget Cat from the Future" made its official US premiere on @disneyxd with the first episode (containing the segments "All the Way From the Future World" & "The Mecha-Maker")!
It was an English dub adaptation of the third "Doraemon" anime series, running since April of 2005 and still going strong! (with 700+ episodes as of July 2024)
The dub had an incredibly high profile set of voice actors, starring Mona Marshall, Johnny Yong Bosch, Cassandra Lee Morris, Brian Beacock, and Kaiji Tang as the leads (Doraemon, Nobita/"Noby", Shizuka/"Sue", Suneo/"Sneech", and Takeshi "Gian"/"Big G"), with Mari Devon, Tony Oliver, Max Mittelman, Keith Silverstein, Spike Spencer, Minae Noji, Kirk Thornton, Cristina Vee playing the reoccuring set of secondary cast of the show's characters.
The show centered around the life of a misfortunate boy named Nobita "Noby" Nobi who suffers from bad grades, bullying from his peers, scolding from his parents (his ferocious mom mainly), and is generally an awkward, lazy, kinda weird, and slow kid.
A robotic cat from the 22nd century named Doraemon is sent back in time to aid Noby in his life, pulling out futuristic magical gadgets from his pocket that can turn everyday human life into something much more every day.
Hijinks ensue when Noby ends up misusing Doraemon's gadgets, often continuously using them for his selfish (or selfless sometimes) benefits until things get incredibly out of control either through inconveniences, bullies, or just... really really poor choices.
Occasionally every now and then, the show has little half hour adventures, such as Noby & the gang helping a group of little people ("A Little Adventure"), Doraemon & Noby seeing aliens ("Invasion of the Goat Aliens", "Doraemon and the Space Shooters"), Doraemon & Noby going after a time capsule ("Doraemon's Time Capsule"), escaping from a villian from the future ("A Visitor from the Future"), but generally overall, the show is incredibly episodic and formulaic with the premise listed above.
The dub made numerous edits to the source material such as having the show's setting take place in a random no-name town in America instead of Japan, changing Japanese yen to American currency, removing content, motifying the character Shizuka's personality due to American viewers misunderstanding or getting confused over her original traits, etc.
The cast of characters were also given Americanized names, though these are confirmed to be just nicknames, with it being implied that they still have their original names in media such as Stand By Me Doraemon 2 (the English dub) & in the English manga.
It ran for a total of 52 episodes (with two 11 minute segments each with the exception of a few half hour specials that were dubbed, especially by season two) across two seasons from July 7th, 2014 to September 1st, 2015, being seemingly cancelled or sidelined by Disney quietly, with no official answer on the status of the dub.
According to Sneech Honekawa voice actor Brian Beacock via his TikTok on a stream from around 2020, Disney lost interest and didn't want to continue pushing the series.
The show continued to air in reruns after the conclusion of the second season on Disney XD until on June 20th, 2018, it got preempted by a rerun of Phineas & Ferb and has never aired again nor been seen again on American television (photo above courtesy of Collin LW)
And sadly, as of 2024, there seem to be no plans to officially re-release the dub via formats, as its not on DVD and Blu-ray nor is it available on watch on major streaming services with anime like Netflix, Disney+, Hulu, or Crunchyroll.
Though thankfully, thanks to the efforts of an unknown to my head right now fan, the entire English dub's episodes in 1080p logoless quality (ripped from "Watch Disney XD" before being removed) is currently available to watch online on Archive.org (& MEGA), being helped made widespread by Doraemon US superfan & voice actor Collin LW!
Despite receiving some particularly heavy negative reception from several fans of the original Japanese dub over the years since its existence came to be, the dub has generally received positive feedback from those who saw it, especially from its devoted cult following. Particularly for the voice cast's performances, heartfelt moments, the cute cartoony artstyle, the fun cast of characters, the original soundtrack by Joseph Bauer, and the sense of witty hilarious humor that's been favorably compared to the likes of the 4Kids dubs of the "Pokemon" anime from the 1990s and 2000s.
(What are your own personal thoughts on the dub? I'd love to hear in the replies and reblogs on your personal views and experiences on the series!)
Again, happy tenth anniversary "Doraemon: Gadget Cat from the Future"!
Thanks to everyone who worked to make this dub possible and exposing so much people to this wonderful, timeless, underrated goofy, silly, heartfelt little show!
Still hope we get more of the dub via either a dub of one of the mainline movies (cough cough Doraemon: Nobita's Earth Symphony cough cough) or maybe another dose of the 2005 series somehow on Netflix after their Stand By Me Doraemon 2 release in 2021 ^^
Go Yuri Go!!!, Yuri!!! on ICE official fanbook, Hosoya Yoshimasa interview
Part 2.
-- You do you think is a rival of the character that you play?
H: I don't think that Otabek thinks about others as "rivals" that much, in general. I don't think that the feels that he is competing with somebody for getting better scores, or doing better performances. Watching the scenes, when he is saying his monologue, I thought that he rather wants to overcome the clumsy and mentally weaker old version of himself.
-- Please, tell us also something about Otabek and Yurio's interactions.
H: In the show, we see a scene, where Otabek says to Yurio, that Yurio is similar to him. After that he says his declaration of friendship, but in the screenplay, there was a note saying "he likes that in Yurio, that he is similar to him", so when I was playing my role, I was keeping that in mind. But as these two were talking, I couldn't stop thinking about Otabek's undercut, for some reason. I was wondering what actor would play the role of Otabek, if they were to make a live-action movie.
[Notes: YoI live-action movie...💀💀 Only if directed by Sayochin.
@thegirlwhorideslikeasamurai mentioning MAPPA in her reblog gave me some flashbacks 💀
Actually, it's very interesting that in 2019 Avex made another anime movie, Eiga no Osomatsu-san, which flopped (~6 oku yen at box office, for comparison, JJK movie made like 130-140 oku?), and they also managed to make fools of themselves, by claiming that they want at least 666666 people to see the movie and "let's count officially", but it ended up being close to "400000"... (I bet that's another reason, why they were even more wary of IceAdo, after the trailer also flopped, and theaters were like 90% empty). Both IPs' huge popularity was based on fujoshis mainly, and you can actually see that when people were commenting on that movie flop online, they also talked that "YoI is going to be next, bc fujos just get bored and move on..." In YoI's case, it's not that they just moved on, they actively started to hate the creators, and everything that they do, if it isn't 100% about Yuuri being the center of the universe, drawn in a way that they approve of (so in a """uke""" way). Too bad YoI is not a pixiv original fujo doujinshi (I know some people kind of forgot that it isn't), so their requests were actually never met properly 😞
But what's even more interesting though, is that unlike on YoI, they didn't give up on Osomatsu IP, even though it has been already dubbed "owakon", "finished content" by fandom in 2019... And made a live-action movie in 2022 starring Johnnys Smile-upers? ((I just looked it up how it came to be and oh boy, it seems that avex had quite close ties to a child predator with hundreds of victims, as multiple bands were under their label... (It's common for a big Jp entertainment-related company to have ties to him, but still... I never thought of it 🫠...))) So they went for a rebrand for that IP, you can say - now catering mainly to fans of boy idol groups. It's quite clear that YoI is treated.... Differently.]

Strap in my fellow feral Silverusso, we going for a long ride!
I mean... why in the world would a billionaire presumably keep the same number he had from the 80's AND answer an Unknown number...
BECAUSE HE WAS HOPING IT WAS DANIEL
Look at his reaction to the phone call:
There's a slight hesitation before he answers
He grabs it as if ripping off a bandaid (strike first!)
He answers a little hopefully but cautiously. I'm going to assume not many people have his personal cell
By the time Kreese starts to say 'Long', Terry is already pulling the phone away from his ear
After Terry hangs up, his arm drops heavily and his shoulders slump in disappointment
He goes right back to his music without skipping a beat. Which the actor has said is a way Terry distracts himself from feeling
Obviously we know that he wasn't happy to hear from John Kreese. And because we know that they spoke over the phone in KK3 - more specifically that Terry did indeed have a cell phone in 1985 - it's not unreasonable to assume that Kreese remembered Terry's number. But that only works if Terry never changed his number. Which is possible.
Knowing Terry his number is probably a pun of his name or something lol
Anyway, what I'm getting at is-- If Terry did not want to hear from Kreese, then why didn't he change his number?
I think it's fair to say that a billionaire wouldn't give out his number to just anyone. And the only other person from his past that we've seen is Daniel LaRusso. They had to set up times to meet up sometimes, right?
Ok maybe I'm reaching a bit
But c'mon! Over the course of almost forty years, it would be nothing to change your phone number. Easy peasy.
And it appears that Daniel was not far from his thoughts. Nothing forgotten. Terry was very aware of Daniel's car commercials to the point that he knew their catchphrase. Terry IMMEDIATELY refers to Daniel as 'Danny boy'. Like it was yesterday.
There was no: "What was that nickname I used to call him...?" And it's been said but, he was happy to see Daniel as opposed to angry at seeing Kreese.
So it's not crazy to believe that he kept that line of communication open. Boy, what I would give to see some of Terry's therapy sessions.
Now on the other side of that, it's perfectly reasonable to think that Daniel changed his number many times lol. He kind of lived like a nomad, not much money, probably was afraid of Terry contacting him. Daniel tells Johnny that he never heard from Terry again. You could take that to mean that he half-expected it. Heard from him how, Daniel?
But Yen, you may ask, why didn't Terry ever call Daniel if he did indeed keep that line open on purpose?
Well, take Mike Barnes for example. He tells Daniel that there were many times he wanted to reach out to Daniel to apologize, but was afraid of "triggering" something painful in Daniel. And since Terry went to therapy, he was probably told something similar. Terry did say that he understood Daniel's initial angry reaction, but still tried to appeal and apologize.
Maybe a part of Terry always hoped that-- when Daniel was ready, then they could talk. So he kept his number, the last number he knew Daniel had, just in case.
Then there's the UNKNOWN part of all this. You can't convince me that Terry Silver, of all people, wouldn't know every single last person who had access to his personal phone number. Meticulous and two steps ahead of everyone, Terry Silver.
And so
Why on Earth would he answer an Unknown caller? Why not let it go to voicemail? Why not hang up and consider it a telemarketer or something?
Because he knows who has his number. And out of two long lost friends there was only one that he was hoping to hear from.
Is my thinking anyway.
NOT TO MENTION. NOT TO MENTION THAT TERRY WAS WEARING RED DURING THAT SCENE.
Facing a very zen garden I may add
When we see Terry with Kreese, even in KK3, he wears more yellow, black, it's the Cobra Kai colors
DANIEL was the one who wore red all the time. It's in his name- LaRusso. But that's a post rant for another time. Because throughout the rest of Season 4, Terry never wears red again.
Anyhoo, I'm going to randomly talk about Terry's silk robes now lmao.
So... since it looks like Terry started his morning by playing the piano, seemingly right out of bed, threw on a robe etc, can we infer that he was shirtless under there?
I mean, we got to see him getting ready for bed here:
In nothing but a robe and sleep pants.
I must accept that he plays the piano shirtless like the sexy god he is 🚬
And studiously ignore how lonely he must be, going to bed alone and waking up alone, enough that he must play a difficult song on his piano first thing in the morning to distract himself from his thoughts and emotions, since he can no longer numb the pain and loneliness with drugs and violence. 🚬
Cheyenne doesn't count because she didn't seem to fill the void either. TiG said it was mostly the music and art collecting for Terry. No mention of beautiful women. Hmm.
This post got away from me. What was I talking about
What do you guys think? I love this show too much? Agreed!
