First Impression: Ippon Again!
Tumblr media
The cicadas are singing a summertime symphony when they are suddenly disturbed by a thudding sound. The dull thump repeats over and over, displacing the indolent hum of the insects from the soundscape with a driving rhythm to give the early morning hours a sense of direction and purpose. Gradually, we draw nearer to the source of the indefatigable sound, pulling up to the school dojo. Is someone training? Lingering close-ups of tatami mats and a water bottle would indicate so. And then we see her, the lone high schooler practicing shoulder rolls, one after the other, in quick, steady succession. She is a judo club member, and pretty soon her teammates join her. From here, the episode flashes back to the previous year, when the main girl, Michi, lost her final judo match of her middle school career—and indeed of her life, as she had sworn off continuing with judo once in high school. It was too sweaty, exhausting, and time-consuming, and she had a boyfriend to catch if she wanted to fulfill the romantic plot she had outlined for her life. But a fateful visit to the school dojo, and an encounter with the girl who once bested her, would soon scupper those plans. And so begins the life (and leisure—beach trips are already being planned) of the West Aoba High School girls’ judo club!
Tumblr media
If the stunning opening sequence—rich in realism, lingering in its camerawork, warm and airy in its color design, and accompanied by evocative sound design—is a sign of things to come, then this may just well be the most beautiful work of animation on offer this season. The action sequences—of which there are quite a number—are well animated, particularly the climactic rematch between Michi and her opponent, Towa, whose combination of timidity and pure smackdown physical skill recalls the similarly paradoxical (and charming) Bocchi. If the team from DIY redid Bamboo Blade, the result might have been something like this, with a pastel color palette, feather-light line work, and layers of detail that add an almost painterly quality to it. Quite a different look from the young Bakken Record studio’s other standout series, Joran: the Princess of Snow and Blood, but just as compelling. While the animation and sound design are enough to sell this series and then some, the characters too seem a delightful bunch, adding a bit more energy and drive to the usual combo of personalities found in any “cute girls doing cute things” show. Anna Nagumo, who is actually a member of the—gasp! horror!—kendo club, has pretty strong potential for the season’s best girl award, what with the way her over-assertiveness is met with blasé disinterest as everyone patently ignores her, and her downcast eyebrows that make it seem as if she’s perpetually cooking up a scheme. All told, this sports slice-of-life series promises a very pleasant viewing experience indeed over the weeks to come. Count me in for one more ippon!

MOU IPPON!: le adorabili judoka di Yu Muraoka si mostrano in un nuovo trailer
La commedia slice of life debutterà in Giappone a gennaio.
Tumblr media
youtube
L’adattamento targato BAKKEN RECORD (Joran: The Princess of Snow and Blood) andrà in onda da gennaio 2023 e sarà la prima vera prova alla regia di Ken Ogiwara (direttore d’episodio in Joran: The Princess of Snow and Blood e in Shadows House).
Tumblr media
La sceneggiatura è in mano ad Aya Satsuki (My Master Has No Tail), mentre il character design è curato da Airi Takekawa (Joran: The Princess of Snow and Blood).

Another new season of anime, another excuse to watch too many shows. Seriously, there are, like, almost 20 airing anime I’m watching right now. HELP.
86 Eighty Six: A false utopia with commentary on the nature of war, strong production values and a cast of interesting characters? Yep, this looks right up my alley.
Backflip: Pretty Boys do Sports(tm), gymnastics edition! Animation is strong and lived-in; feels like a really good team working on this one. I’m down to see where it goes.
Blue Reflection Ray: My only drop so far. I was willing to give it a chance, but it’s just boring and ugly to look at and doesn’t seem to know what it’s doing. What a shame.
Don’t Toy With Me, Miss Nagatoro: On the spectrum of Teasing Waifu shows, this one is far worse than Tagaki but far better than Uzaki. Hopefully it doesn’t stay this extreme, cause, uh, she is outright bullying this dude.
Farewell, My Dear Cramer: Uuuugh, I hate how bad the production is on this one. This is from the Your Lie in April author, you really had to stick it with Lidenfilms?
Higehiro: I am told this show is actually wholesome and not creepy. I am praying that turns out to be true. Cause first impressions... aren’t promising.
I’ve Been Killing Slimes for 300 Years: Between this and Spider, Aoi Yuuki is single-handedly saving isekai. Low-key fun with promised yuri on the horizon, so you bet I’m sticking with this one.
How Not to Summon a Demon Lord Omega: I remember when this show had at least a little charm. I miss thoze days.
Joran, Princess of Snow and Blood: If I had a nickel for every anime this season centered on steampunk supernatural spycraft in approx-1930 Japan, I’d have two nickels.
Mars Red: Which isn’t much, but it’s still weird that it happened twice.
My Hero Academia Season 5: It’s more MHA, and I’m still here for it.
Pretty Boy Detective Club: So is this just if Monogatari and Ouran had a love child? Because I am here for it.
Shadows House: Still waiting on the narrative hook, but man the gothic atmosphere and mysterious setting are great. Very excited for this one.
SSSS.Dynazenon: I was lukewarm on Gridman, but this is looking like a fun time. At least the protagonist actually has a character this time.
Those Snow White Notes: I’m a sucker for a good angsty music anime, but man, this felt really rushed. At least the shamisen playing is genuinely spectacular.
To Your Eternity: Wolf’s Rain by way of the Silent Voice mangaka? Yes, yes, yes, and might I add, yes.
Vivy Fluorite Eye’s Song: Re:Zero’s author and Studio Wit collaborate on an original sci-fi anime that is absolutely knocking it out of the park so far. Don’t let this one slip under your radar, it fucking slaps.

Blue Eye Samurai (2023) / Lady Snowblood (1973)
I've only watched two episodes. The premise reminds me of Lady Snowblood, where a vengeful character hunts down the one who defiled her mother and kills those who stand in her way.
There's been numerous Japanese films and anime set during the feudal era with a warrior female lead, like Lady Snowblood, Crimson Bat, Ichi, Tsukikage Ran, Koto Nakazawa, Yae no Sakura, Joran: The Princess of Snow and Blood, Undercover Geisha, etc.
Unfortunately they are not known in the west as the films were made for domestic market. So Hollywood take the opportunity to "recreate" them for the western audience like this Blue Eye Samurai.

youtube
Il cast giapponese è composto da:
Lewis: Chikahiro Kobayashi
Mac: Takahiro Sakurai
Nina: Yuuko Kaida
Oscar: Takanori Hoshino
Patty: Atsumi Tanezaki
La peculiare serie animata in computer grafica, è stata prodotta presso gli studi BAKKEN RECORD (Joran The Princess of Snow and Blood) e 5 INC (Make My Day).
