The urge to ask why is quelled by the way he clears his throat and turns away, pulling his wallet out at the counter before she can offer. She changes the subject instead, picking up an enamel pin of the building, designed to look like gingerbread. “I used to collect stuff like this when I was a kid,” she says, running a finger over the ridges at the top, tiny red, white, and blue gumdrops. “Okay, well—I still sort of do that whenever Disneyland gets new pins I like.”

There’s a pause before Jordan lets out a slightly strangled sigh. “Sweetheart,” he says, “we have so much to teach you.”
