I’ve decided to include our babeypurser McElroy because the role of Purser is sometimes regarded as an officer role. Among all the officers, Lightoller (B), Pitman (5), Boxhall (2) and Lowe (14) survived the sinking. McElroy was the only officer whose body was recovered and identified; he was buried at sea.

Now to the fun facts!

Henry Wilde: he was already captain and was set to command the SS Cymric for the Liverpool to Boston Route. Unfortunately, the coal strike happened and his first voyage with Cymric was delayed to presumably 1st May. White Star Line decided to put him in onto the crew of Titanic as Chief Officer.

As you guys may know already, Henry Wilde is my favourite officer so it’s not surprising that I have been posting about him for this April. I also am currently doing a series of TikToks for his actions throughout Titanic’s maiden voyage as well🙈

William Murdoch: Charles Lightoller thought his bestie’s moustache make him look ugly so he grew his moustache so that Will could shave. Nevertheless, we all think otherwise.

Charles Lightoller: of course, his role as one of the captains of the little ships during the Dunkirk Evacuation. He saved around 130 lives in it with his family yacht, the Sundowner.

Side note: currently, the Sundowner is a museum ship in Ramsgate but sadly, the yacht is in a bad condition and we need money to repair. I know I don’t have much high opinions on the British (yeah except Henry Wilde), despite having been living in England for almost 5 years, but Lightoller has been one of the most intriguing figures to me; being through 4 shipwrecks and fire, also living through Titanic, WWI, and Dunkirk, his story of hope and survival is worth a movie. Herbert Pitman: despite suffering from seasickness, this son of a farmer had a more than half-century long seafaring career, retiring in 1946. He started his career as an apprentice, then a deck officer and when he could not pass the eye test due to colour blindness at one eye, White Star Line made him a purser and he stayed in this position for the rest of his career. Pitman served in both world wars on troop ships; when he retired, he was a Lieutenant-Commander of the Royal Naval Reserves and was created an MBE in 1948, in recognition of his long service in the merchant marine.

Joseph Boxhall: he had a very happy marriage with his wife Majory and they were very fond of their dogs. This may be a substitute to children given that they do not have children together but anyways if anyone asked why you haven’t had kids yet, tell them about the Boxhalls and their doggos 🐶

Harold Lowe: he was a hobby artist who works with watercolours, as well as wood carvings. This may come across as surprising but you should not be surprised given that his father was an artist. There are a few of Harold’s drawings exists today, including a sketch of Titanic (in which he messed up with the funnels). Oh yes, he was also in the church choir as well when he was young.

James Moody: During his South American runs, he would sometimes flirt with female passengers with his very patchy Spanish and well, sometimes he just dropped in some swear words by accident. Yeah, in case you wondered, he’s not that shy as you thought after watching Ed’s portrayal of our daring Jim in the 1997 movie (the real Jim was quite cheeky actually).

Hugh McElroy: as the ship’s purser, he was there to take care of passengers’ needs (like he’s basically the “manager”). From parrot-tending (yes, and he trained the parrot to do morse code) to organising marriage ceremonies for runaway couples, he’s there to try to help. And as a result, he was a very popular man on the ship and passengers were honoured to share a table with him.

THE FOUR SURVIVING TITANIC OFFICERS...

In this unique historical snapshot the four, surviving senior officers of the Titanic pose for an image truly destined for the annals of posterity.

From feft to right we see Fith Officer Harold Lowe, Second Officer Charles Lightoller, Third Officer Herbert Pitman seated below Lightoller, and Fourth Officer Joseph Boxhall on the far right.

As a junior officer, Lowe left the Titanic in Boat Fourteen at around 0130. He would later organise the most comprehensive and determined rescue effort of survivors left in the water after the ship sank.

Second Officer Lightoller supervised the loading and lowering of the port side lifeboats. He was still on the ship when she sank, but was washed clear. He managed to subsequently swim to a capsized, half submerged collapsible boat. Along with twenty-two others he stood on the upturned hull until another boat took them aboard.

Herbert Pitman was ordered by First Officer Murdoch to take charge of Boat Five. It left the Titanic at 0043 that night, with around thirty-six people on board. The boat and its occupants were eventually picked up by the Carpathia at about 0600 on the same morning.

Joseph Boxhall was ordered to take charge of Boat Two, which left the Titanic at 0145. The forty-seat boat contained just eighteen souls. It was the first boat to be sighted by the onrushing Carpathia at around 0400 that morning.

Their fellow officers- Chief Officer Henry Wilde, First Officer William Murdoch, and Sixth Officer James Moody, as well as Captain Edward Smith himself-were lost with the ship.

Part 1 out of 2: The Coutts’s: Their Story!!! ❤️ First to start off with their names: Minnie Coutts, (Wife/Mom), William Coutts, (Husband/Father), Willie Coutts, also known as William and Bill, (Son/Brother), and Neville Coutts, (Son/Brother). William Coutts was already in America before, to start a new life, he worked as a jewelry engraver. At the time of the Titanic, (April, 1912), Minnie had enough money to buy tickets for Second Class, but instead bought tickets for Third Class, to save enough money, so Minnie, Willie and Neville were Third Class passengers, (Steerage), on the Titanic. They boarded the Titanic in Southampton, England. On the Titanic during their journey to America, Minnie said that the food in Third Class was that to a First Class Meal, it was good, and the Titanic, more or less, beautiful, a nice experience. Willie, met a group of Third Class passengers, boys, he became friends with, Frank Goldsmith, Harold Goodwin, Albert and George Rice, William Johnston, and James and Walter Van Billiard, they played on the baggage cranes and wandered down to the boiler rooms to watch the stokers and fireman at work. (Only Willie Coutts and Frank Goldsmith, would survive the sinking.). During the time of the disaster, Minnie woke up to a jar, unaware of what it was and she went up on deck to check out what happened, then she went back to her cabin to wake up her two sleeping boys, Willie and Neville and dressed them and she found two life preservers, only, in her cabin and put them on her boys. She told Willie, “If something happens don’t be afraid to fret and watch after your younger brother Neville!”. Then they all went through a maze of crowded corridors, finding locked gates along the way. Soon to cross paths with the Coutts family, a Steward, the Steward noticed that Minnie didn’t have her a life preserver and so he led her and her boys to his cabin and gave he gave her his life preserver and led them up on deck and patted the boys heads and said “If I go down with the ship, please pray for me!”. Then there was more trouble, Willie found a dog on deck, out of the mad scramble, taking time to pet it. They boarded lifeboat number 2, Officer, Joseph Boxhall in charge of the lifeboat, at first, didn’t let young Willie pass, because he was wearing a straw boater hat, and to tall for his age! So the family protested, and finally Willie was able to board the lifeboat. On the lifeboat, Minnie recalls, the ship going down, and hearing the cries, groans and shouts. Seventeen people total in their lifeboat. Willie recalls, on the Titanic, hearing the song, “Nearer My God To Thee”, and on the lifeboat, the ship going down and lights from the ship shining. The trouble wasn’t over yet, their last name on the list was different which caused some confusion, but William was sure that it was his family. They reunited in New York, soon to live in Boston, Massachusetts. Then soon to live in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, where young Willie, settled in his later, adult years. Willie became a professional musician, playing, Guitar and Banjo and taught lessons. He worked as a credit manager. He married his Wife, named, Alma Eiferd and they both had two children, (Girls, Fay and Barbara). Neville, in his later years, got married to Edna Jordan, but they didn’t have any children. Neville went to a screening of the movie, “A Night to Remember”, (1958). Willie was outgoing and he loved to talk about the Titanic!!! Minnie on the other hand didn’t like to reminisce of the Titanic. (I would put all of the dates, but the internet is wrong with certain dates! So, I’ll just put Minnie and Willie’s dates.). Minnie lived until she was aged, 84. Born: February 2nd, 1876 ~ Died: February 29th, 1960. Willie lived until he was aged, 55. Born: September 6th ~ Died: December 25th, (Christmas Day!), 1957. I just saw the new Titanic movie, Unsinkable: Titanic Untold, and I have thoughts. No huge spoilers, but I'll still put it under a cut if you want to scroll on past

Alaine Ricard is fictional. I have never been more disappointed in my whole entire life

Absolute disservice to Harold Lowe; all of his best moments were ignored. He had a little snark in the beginning but nothing else to show his brilliance. I don't think they even mentioned Lifeboat 14

They called Frederick Fleet a quartermaster at one point? It's clear they knew he was a lookout, but the lookouts didn't have the title of quartermaster, did they?

In the scene with all of the surviving officers, only Lightoller and Lowe talked, which, fine. I guess that's to be expected. Pitman and Boxhall do tend to get left in the background. But I'm like 99% sure there was only one other officer with them. Like? Which officer are we ignoring here?

2am thoughts: First Impressions on the Titanic Officers

Disclaimer: these are totally random thoughts, and most of these are sort of from the 1997 movie, as you have already guessed (nevertheless I’m not the biggest fan of the movie because the romance is just not my cup of tea). My heart goes to everyone who were involved in this disaster, especially those who have lost their family members in the sinking.

Summary:
