George W. Bush, the infamously anti-gay and neoconservative former U.S. president who invaded Iraq on a lie, has criticized congressional Republicans for threatening to defund the U.S. President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR), a largely successful African HIV-prevention program that he launched back in 2003. “There is no program more pro-life” than PEPFAR, he wrote.

Though PEPFAR is estimated to have saved over 25 million lives, its funding is set to expire on September 30. Congressional Republicans are falsely claiming that the program promotes abortion and using its re-funding as a bargaining chip in budget negotiations. Republicans have threatened to defund the entire federal government at the end of the month unless they’re allowed to slash military diversity programs and military aid to Ukraine and to increase anti-immigration measures at the U.S.-Mexico border.

“We are on the verge of ending the HIV/AIDS epidemic. To abandon our commitment now would forfeit two decades of unimaginable progress and raise further questions about the worth of America’s word,” Bush wrote in a Wednesday opinion article in The Washington Post.

Bush said that his Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice, his White House chief of staff Joshua Bolton, and his senior policy advisor Michael Gerson had advised him to begin PEPFAR. Gerson reportedly told Bush that it would be “a source of national shame” if the U.S. didn’t try to help end the worldwide HIV epidemic.

Bush’s opinion article cited words that Gerson himself had written in defense of PEPFAR in November 2017: “Are Republicans in Congress prepared to squander a legacy of GOP leadership that has won the United States considerable goodwill around the world? Among evangelical Christians, what definition of being ‘pro-life’ does not include saving millions of lives from preventable disease and death?”

Adding his own thoughts, Bush wrote, “There is no program more pro-life than one which has saved more than 25 million lives. I urge Congress to reauthorize PEPFAR for another five years without delay.”

During his presidency, Bush backed a constitutional amendment against same-sex marriage, and used bans on same-sex marriage to help him win re-election in 2004. While he served, 27 states banned same-sex marriage.

Despite Bush’s anti-gay record, PEPFAR was “a sound investment in U.S. security,” Ben Plumley, the former CEO of the now-defunct international HIV organization Pangea, said in a now-deleted interview with Hornet.com. Plumley said the program “generated very significant goodwill towards the United States” and countered “the spread of radical Islam or radical anti-Western attitudes in sub-Saharan Africa.”

Plumley also noted that most HIV transmissions in sub-Saharan Africa are heterosexual, meaning that conservative Republicans could support PEPFAR without worrying about seeming too overtly supportive of the LGBTQ+ community.

“You can’t stay in high school forever,” he told the Post-Gazette in a June interview. “I thought it might be nice to go out on top, on our terms, with complete stories. … It was such a return to East High in every way, and it felt like the cast was graduating.”

Season three ended with the East High drama club gaining some national notoriety due to their participation in a (again, in-show) Disney+ documentary chronicling their summer-camp production of “Frozen: The Musical.” Some of the documentary’s revelations test established relationships, including the bond between Carlos (Frankie A. Rodriguez) and Seb (Bethel Park native Joe Serafini).

It also helped solidify the long-gestating romance between East High drama club standouts Ricky (Joshua Bassett) and Gina (Sofia Wylie). Those two are an official item when season four begins, though they face plenty of tests throughout the season due to their own insecurites, diverging post-high school plans and Hollywood’s siren call.

As examples of how the show’s young cast were clearly ready for life after “HSMTMTS,” Federle cited Bassett’s then-upcoming world tour, Julia Lester (who plays Ashlyn Caswell) joining the cast of Broadway’s “Into the Woods” revival and Wylie’s starring role in the 2022 Netflix film “The School for Good and Evil.” 

“I thought, ‘Let’s wrap this up on our terms and really graduate together,’” Federle said.

Unsurprisingly, season four mostly revolves around the theme of “figuring out the future,” as Federle put it. The teenagers’ stories take up the bulk of season four’s screen time, but they do have to share the spotlight with returning “High School Musical” talent like Lucas Grabeel (Ryan Evans), Corbin Bleu (Chad Danforth), Monique Coleman (Taylor McKessie), Kaycee Stroh (Martha Cox), Bart Johnson (Jack Bolton) and Alyson Reed (Ms. Darbus).

Those folks “slotted in perfectly” with Federle’s grand designs and desire to give the show’s actors and devoted fans “a really nice arc for everybody that pays off.” He especially enjoyed finally getting to map out eight episodes with Ricky and Gina as a full-fledged couple.

“It’s fun to write a no-holds-barred Ricky and Gina season. Even though there are always challenges in high school and exes and the future and anxiety and self-doubt ... it was a blast to finally flex our Rina as a show.”

Just as important to Federle was giving Seblos their time to shine as well. Serafini wasn’t in much of season three, and season four begins with those two trying to weather a rough patch stemming from the distorted way in which the “Frozen” documentary presented Carlos’ summer at Camp Shallow Lake. Don’t worry, Seblos fans: Serafini is around a lot more as Seb and Carlos navigate this messy situation.

“We sort of had a feeling when we were filming season four that it would likely be the last season,” Serafini told the Post-Gazette in June. “It wasn’t too much of a surprise. I think it’s been a great four years and we wrap it up pretty nicely. I’m excited to share it with the world and put a nice close on that chapter.”

Both Serafini and Federle are former Pittsburgh CLO Mini Stars who met at the Gene Kelly Awards for Excellence in High School Musical Theater held annually at the Benedum Center. Federle said that Serafini, who was back home last month starring as Jack in Pittsburgh CLO’s “Into the Woods” production, is blessed with “a wildly beautiful voice” and has been “an incredible member” of the “HSMTMTS” family.

“Seb and Carlos have been on a journey,” Federle said. “For a lot of our young audience, it’s the first real representation they’ve seen in the media that reflects them, or certainly on the Disney platform. That has been an honor to do that. ... You can’t do the show without Joe in a meaningful way, and it was so great to get one of Pittsburgh’s finest back on screen.”

Naturally, it’s bittersweet for Federle’s four-year “HSMTMTS” odyssey to be winding down — “with an emphasis on sweet,” he said. As he prepares to step into a future away from East High, Federle is celebrating where he came from by reflecting on how Western Pennsylvania institutions like the Pittsburgh CLO Academy and Center For Theater Arts gave him the skills he needed to thrive in the best part he’s ever known.

“My values are ultimately about trying to be a very fair and kind leader,” he said. “I learned that in Pittsburgh, which I think may be an East Coast city but has a Midwest heart. I think that Midwest heart beats at the center of this series.”

HIGH SCHOOL MUSICAL (2006-2008) : its my childhood and part of why i am so gay 😅

all these muscled men, the iconic Sharpay Evans, her twin brother Ryan who is supposed to be gay even though he dates a cute girl, Troy who was one of my first crushes, all the songs that i knew by heart and that i sang in song shamelessly with my friends 🤣

My ideas for an HIGH SCHOOL MUSICAL story would be

-- Troy Bolton and his childhood Chad Danforth best friend falling in love / using a slave

- Why it could be good : they have a great chemistry and they are very dominant

- Why i may not write it : because i doesnt have any idea for the plot (them graduating and falling in love and / or using a loser slave when they are at university?)

-- Ryan Evans in love with Troy Bolton : maybe Ryan secretly loves Troy

-Why it could be good : because i love the (lack of) chemistry between these characters

, and i think a lot of gays guys would recognize themselves in the love of a gay guy from. It could be funny to see Ryan and Sharpay competing for the same guy

- Why i may not write it : because i don't want to be make this love story toxic, I want to show that Troy was secretly in loves with Ryan (maybe by alternating the pov)

-- Sharpay Evans and Zeke Baylor : because i am an addict to interracial porn and at the same time their love is pure and underrated. It could be a story where they finally become an official couple. It would be funny to see this rich asservative white woman date a black man who isnt even hunky or masculine but who is funny and kind, protective and loves he

-- Chad Danforth and Ryan Evans : of course there is their song I don't dance, but also it would be funny to see them dating.

- Why i find it intersting : because i love the contrast between the skinny effeminate classy rich white boy into arts and the muscular masculine poor black man into sports.

It could be funny to see Ryan dates Chad while Sharpays dates Zeke, so their conservative rich white parents see their only childs marry two muscular black men

--- DESCENDANTS (2015-2019) : it was interesting movies, not good, not bad, i hoped it would be better since it was made Kenny Ortega who directed HSM movies.

-- my idea would be to write about Chad Charming who would be a narcistic bully, a white privileged prince who uses a (male / female) loser as his homework slave as he did with Evie, or maybe he ends being in love with his loser slave.

I chosed him because he is the most handsome man according to me.

It could also be a femdom story about him being enslave by Audrey (Aurora's daughter), who could even humiliate him with Jay.

Chad could be Audrey and Jay's pet slave who lick their feet and follow them obediently

-- I had begun a story about Harry Hook being in love with Ben, Beauty and the Beast's son

This story would have been about their love story and Harry becoming Prince consort

I love the contrast between a prince charming and an evil pirate

There was such an homoerotism between them

i havent continued it because i wasnt inspired enough. But some people told me i should write about the handsome actor Thomas Doherty who plays Harry Hook, so maybe i'll continue it.

--- LIVE ACTIONS

i am far from loving all the live actions. there is live actions of animated movies, and there is movies with actors but not adapted from animated movies (Mary Poppins, Enchanted is my favorite, Pirates of the Caribean...)

There has been good propositions (Cinderella is the best, Maleficent, Alice in Wonderland, Cruella and 101 Dalmatians with Glenn Close) and some were kind of awful (Beauty and the Beast, The Lion King, Aladdin). Maybe in some years we will see them and like them all

so i havent a lot of ideas with the characters of live actions

I am interested upcoming Hercules, and i planned on writing a Hercules multiverse story

My story would have been about the different cinematographic version of Hercules meeting and showing their differences (those who are bi, gay, straight, with slaves....).

-- Prince Anders from Aladdin (2019). A minor character but he is kind, sexy and funny.

I love furs coats and i imagine a servant smelling his furs 😍

-- David Gyasi as Percival in Maleficent - Mistress of Evil (2019) was an interesting character. He play the commander of the army of Uthread, the kingdom of King Henry and Queen Ingrith, Prince Philip's parents. He could be the bull of the Queen.

Percival could also be the lover of his son Prince Philip. You know how much i love interracial (gay) couples and hot tall muscled black men. As much as i love Prince Philip's character, i found Brenton Twaithes and Harris Dickinson's versions of him too... wimpy!

In this story Percival could be the bull, humiliates the cuckold dad and the wimp son, taking over the kingdom, (makes Aurora his fuck slave or wife), marry Philip and maybe enslaving him and so the kingdom is ruled by a strong black man.

--- ONCE UPON A TIME (2011-2018) : an amazing series, respectful of the fairytales and the Disney animated movies inspired by them

I already said i want to write a gay story about the Hunstman / the Sheriff Graham. It would have been about him in love with a boy, or him with a male version of Snow White
