Berserk's Continued Popularity and Trauma
Tumblr media
I often keep up with what's selling in the manga world, so it's not a surprise that I check out ICv2's Manga Week when the site posts up interviews and insights about the industry. What caught my eye this time was Kentaro Miura's Berserk still being a top-seller and a top manga franchise in the English-speaking side of the world.
How popular is Berserk right now? It was the top manga franchise of Fall 2023 beating out everything that was either Shonen Jump, Junji Ito or Attack on Titan. The Deluxe Editions have sold well for all of 2023, especially the first edition (which contains Volumes 1-3 of the series). It helps that Dark Horse Comics, the North American publisher for the manga, has been promoting the Berserk Deluxe Editions non-stop. Even when they didn't announce anything new at Anime NYC last year, Dark Horse made a huge note about the latest Berserk Deluxe Edition that would come out.
I think it's great that Berserk is getting a lot more attention (especially after Kentaro Miura died) because this is a story about trauma and how we still carry the wounds of it at times.
In my opinion, Berserk is a story about people trying to overcome their own trauma - one caused by interpersonal relations. Ultimately, it's about three people in particular. Guts, the main hero who falls into despair after his experiences in the Golden Age Arc and has to deal with the curse of constantly being hunted by monsters beyond his imagination. Griffith, the antagonist who once had admirable dreams, but fully gives into darkness after going through painful torture and is the main source of Guts' trauma. And Casca, the strong heroine who becomes a victim of Griffith's desires and mentally shattered as a result until recent events in the manga. The connection between all three characters says it all - sometimes, the trauma caused is not from strangers who are "dangerous," but those closest and dearest to us.
Berserk is so relatable because we carry on the weight of whatever personal trauma we experienced without realizing its hold on us until it becomes apparent. The worse thing is we often have a very hard time talking about it.
Around 2021, I heard about a certain book about trauma that took during the COVID pandemic. It was Bessel van der Kolk's The Body Keeps the Score. Originally published in 2014, the book blew up for good reason because COVID forced everyone to confront issues kept hidden for a long time. Van der Kolk talks about how horrible people can be to one another and that psychiatry seems to ignore the complexity of trauma when it comes to helping its victims.
Because of the nuance and how long it takes to heal, maybe that's why we can't talk about trauma easily.
Which is why I want to get to this point - I sometimes find it hard to talk about Berserk because of the sexual violence and horror aspects. Yes, fans love to call it the GOAT and/or recommending the manga to other manga/Western comics fans. But I will say I can't exactly recommend Berserk to anyone who's experienced trauma, especially sexual trauma. If they haven't come to terms and/or processed their pain, why would any manga fan shove Berserk in their face? I know there's heavy debate about microagressions and triggers, but just because it's critically-acclaimed doesn't mean it's for everyone.
I will say that the sexual violence in Berserk is used in a way to highlight the brutality of the real world at times. It serves its purpose in the story. Maybe I feel that Berserk is about acknowledging the dark side of life. The world is full of absolute cruelty. And maybe more importantly, you never fully move on. That's the key point. Moments that hurt will stick by you for a long time. People love to shame others for not being able to move on and/or cheer up. They don't know how trauma forces its victims to stay still out of a realistic yet unhelpful fear of certain kinds of people.
But you can still move forward. I'm admired by Guts fighting in the face of despair. He embodies the belief that you probably can never move on from whatever emotional pain you experience and that's okay. At least take the steps to make your own life worth living. It's the best you can do for yourself.
And a good start to moving forward is accepting the bad thoughts. I recently read how positive thinking is pushed so hard to promote better mental health. Some positivity is fine, but there's so much pain in this world that all the wellness industry strategies in the world will never make go away. It is a huge problem when we're told to grit and grind while suppressing our inner-most vulnerabilities.
A lot of people can't handle that kind of vulnerability. Maybe that's why I'm happy that Berserk is being discovered by new fans. Guts is a strong yet so very vulnerable hero. I think it's those vulnerabilities due to his trauma that allow him to gain some very good friends (Puck, Farnese, Serpico, Isidro, and Schierke) along the way who genuinely care about him.
We all want someone to acknowledge our pain and be willing to sit with and stick by us through the neck of it all.
I remember a friend who once told me that when they went to see someone perform, all of their grief and vulnerability was so apparent that they wished that they didn't need to air it out since a lot of people can't handle it. I told them I can handle it and they said that I was built different.
Much like the popularity of Berserk these days and what I hope the series encourages, I want my difference of being able to sit with trauma to be the norm.

MK was an Interesting person.
Malin had spent the previous week drawing out a plan to ingratiate themselves with his group. The Mayor, as he requested they call him, had opened to them to a brand new avenue of thought; an avenue they had to admit to never before considering.
Friendship was a rarity for Malin; A rarity they never truly noticed in their day to day. After all, they had plenty of people to talk to and spend time with: Acquaintances, business partners, collaborators, other artists and content creators. Impersonal, platonic relationships that held them aloft in a manageable bubble of personal interest.
It's not like they were inclined to avoid social situations, or keep strangers at a distance. They quite enjoyed the company of other people, even sought it out often and openly. But true friendship? The type of bond they hoped to achieve with this endeavor? That was something they've only ever managed to find in Milton.
Their longtime ally and close companion was a notably special case. They had known each other since early childhood; And while the both of them didn't consider their bond to be in any way romantic or familial, neither of them could (or would) deny the trust they shared.
He took good care of them- socially, emotionally, financially- and Malin felt compelled to do the same; acting as his compass and using their skills and talents to grow his wealth and power. It was a give and take that ran deeper than mere favor. Their relationship was a different texture than that of a vlog squad, or an interesting conversation partner. It was something emotional. platonic, but intense. He meant something more.
To achieve a mutually sustaining, long lasting connection, Mk would have to mean something more. The Monkie Kids would have to mean something more. They needed to be close to get to Sun Wukong; And with force thoroughly removed from the table, the only option without risk was complete sincerity. And thus, the planning had begun.
Putting themselves on Mk's radar would be easy. It was simply a matter of memorizing his schedule and sporadically inserting Milton and themselves into his general area. To familiarize his subconscious with their likenesses would ensure that he remembered their faces after the first meeting.
Malin’s past experience and skill in establishing (business or otherwise) relations would ensure that the meeting itself would go smoothly. Pre-thought-out questions, answers, statements, and conversation extenders were easily customized to any and every possible situation, they even had a number of “Sorry for being weird” gifts ready for the worst case scenario.
They planned for everything. It was, after all, what they did best. Unfortunately- Or rather, very fortunately -Mk just seemed to have a way with derailing well though out plans.
Malin had finished their monthly product review earlier than expected, and was taking advantage of this newfound free time to indulge in their very private, very personal hobby: Model kits.
They've harboured a love for them for as long as they could remember. One of their mother's final gifts to them had been a model kit. It was a hasbro official limited edition transformable Unicron that had sold out months prior, the proud smile on her face as they jumped and shrieked for joy was one of their better memories of her.
The craft store they deemed worthy of their patronage was a medium sized, family owned spot just west of their college campus. They supplied all kinds of sets and materials, and the owners were happy to fill special orders and stock specific items upon request. Malin was salivating over a deluxe sized Lost Light set when they felt a light tap on their shoulder.
“Hey, uh. Excuse me, are you ‘Bone Meister’?”
They turned to the voice, ready to switch to their meet and greet persona, only to fall silent when they locked eyes with Mk himself.
He was wearing his standard outfit- one which appeared in nearly all of his pictures on social media -and a friendly smile on his face. One hand held a bundle of comics, and a basket full of art supplies occupied the other. Malin noted faint multi colored smears on the one holding the basket; the presence of paint pens and fine liners among the assortment inside told them that he’d spent a nominal amount of time in the pen testing isle before wandering over. He hadn't followed them in, then.
“Yes, that's me. Are you a fan?” Malin smiled, taking hold of the model kit they were looking at.
“Oh, no. Uh- Well- Not that I don't like your stuff, I mean-” he chuckled nervously “I uh, saw your performance at the lunar new year music deathmatch tournament two weeks ago. I don't know if you remember me, I- We performed too-”
Malin turned to face him better; displaying open interest with their body language, but keeping their face more aloof “Yes, I do remember you. ‘The Monkie Kids’, is that right?”
Mk’s smile lost a bit of the stress it held, relief etched into the subtle way his shoulders sagged “Yea, I'm the drummer.”
Malin was a bit surprised. They had considered the possibility of him remembering them from the competition, but it had seemed unlikely at the time. It was a big event, and there were a lot of contestants, so they didn't do much planning around this scenario. Luckily for them, Mk seemed just as interested in conversation as they were.
“It… Stings that I lost to you," Malin carefully admitted "But you guys were good.” They didn't even have to lie “Your sound is really something else, I might have to steal away your vocal coach."
Mk laughed “Yeah, well, yours was great too! I've never seen anyone dance like that before. You were like,” he made a flying gesture with his hand, turning Malin’s smile into something more genuine “The wind.”
Malin giggled, briefly surprised they didn't have to force it “Thank you. It was actually inspired by a mix of hip hop, ballet, and fighting forms shown in older material arts movies. I felt it would compliment the desperation and power in the lyrics while simultaneously tying them to the rhythm.”
“Yeah it did!” Mk perked up, balling up his fists and performing several showy air punches and wide kicks “It was so cool! The beat drop after the slow rise into the crescendo made my blood go crazy!” Malin watched, amused, as he did a jumping twirl and landed on one foot, singing out the part he was mentioning “And- and when you bought out that sythe???! Oh my gods! You were amazing! It was like I was actually in the scene!”
Observing the energy that filled him when just talking about their performance made Malin’s pride swell, the sweet nectar washing over them and carrying them out into sea.
“Your performance was nothing to sneeze at, either.” Malin pointed out “I would be lying if I said I wasn't moved myself. You guys really have a way with words.”
Mk looked positively ecstatic, his grin glimmering like sunlight itself. He stood straight, pulling out his phone and tapping on it a bit “We should totally colab! And hang out! Like, today. You hungry?”
As the pair walked out of the store clutching their purchased spoils, and later down the street with lunch in tow, they continued to talk until nightfall. Mk joked, Malin laughed; and in the fleeting moments after they went their separate ways, Malin couldn't help but wonder…
Malin gave him a grin of their own, taking the offered phone and entering in their number. Hook, line, and sinker.
‘That was so easy... Why hadn't I thought of doing this before?’

Magolor Epilogue infodump time!!!
!!! Big warning!! There will be spoilers for the Magolor Epilogue!!! If there is any spoiler tag mod missed, please let mod know!!
Mod first wants to preface this by saying that some things here may be false, based on assumptions, or opinionated due to lack of information, or mod's own feelings and thoughts about Magolor's characterization. You have been warned!
---
Okay, so Magolor. The boy. The catboy, the wizard from another world. First of all, this man is literally as short as a waddle dee, the only reason why he seems taller is that he's a floaty boy! We know he can be great at lying and theatrics, but did you know that he lied about Halcandra being his home? In Kirby's Return to Dream Land Deluxe, when playing in the Extra Mode, if you talk to Magolor in Dangerous Dinner, he will reveal that Halcandra wasn't actually his native home! Instead, he had lived there for a while after he found the Lor Starcutter!
Anyway, small facts aside, time for what you guys really wanted, Magolor Epilogue thoughts! :D The Magolor Epilogue starts directly after the events of Kirby's Return to Dream Land (Deluxe) and gives us an idea of how Magolor survived his fight with Kirby! Playing as Magolor is such a serotonin-bursting thing for mod since Return to Dream Land was the second Kirby game they've ever played (the first was Super Star Ultra), and they LOVED Magolor. Mod didn't care that it was revealed he was evil the whole time, mod loved his design, his clothes, the chaotic vibes he gave off, mod loved everything about him.
Mod doesn't really know why they're using the past tense when they say "love", mod STILL loves Magolor. But anyway, back to the Magolor Epilogue. Mod is gonna skip straight to the final boss since this is the part where mod happened to take note of a Lot of Stuff. First of all The Music. THE MUSIC!!
youtube
Listen long enough and you can hear Magolor's theme deliberately placed into the song! It isn't hidden under the other instruments, it isn't played in a way where you have to focus to hear it, the song literally dedicates more than 30 seconds to playing Magolor's theme! And do you know what he's fighting against? THE MASTER CROWN!! The SAME THING that Magolor was after, the thing that Magolor wanted so he could have unlimited power, the very thing that took over his body and forced him to fight to the death!
And after the fight, he cries, wipes away his tears, and jumps through the portal that would send him home!!! Mod Cannot get over it, Magolor is so happy that he got rid of the Master Crown's presence within him, he's so happy he can go back to Dream Land (one of mod's assumptions, since Star Allies and the Clash games feature Magolor as a character) that he cries tears of happiness and floats into the portal with his arms opened wide, welcoming the feeling of the portal sending him away from That Place.
This one cutscene sent mod into tears!! Magolor fighting back against the Master Crown, the music dedicating an entire segment to his theme, him wiping away his tears and jumping into the portal with open arms!!! It makes mod want to cry again because it's just so symbolistic of Magolor realizing his mistake, understanding that he was given a chance to fix his wrongs, and taking that chance to fight back so he can!! Of course, mod isn't entirely sure about whether or not it was symbolism, but that's just mod's take on it!
Mod could go on and on about this, but you could probably tell from mod's recent post, this is a Very Heavily edited infodump! So they'll stop here >.<

Uh-huh. Well. That was. A lot. I'm gonna need a while to process this one. What I can say immediately is that I am curious about how much Anne will be appearing in s2. You've said it's mostly a Sasha season in the way s2 was mostly a Marcy season, so I guess I'm just worried she'll drop off the map... mostly because she really has some apologizing to do. Which is interesting, and certainly not a position that canon Anne is ever really put in. Cause correct me if I'm wrong, but Marcy was feeding herself by age 6? Is that what I'm getting from "She heated some leftovers and opened the Gladiator box that housed her new Nintwodo Double Screen. She spent the night hopping and jumping through Sanrio World Deluxe."? Cause if so, YIKES. Again, her taking Anne and Sasha was definitely a bad choice. But to a child in a home like *that*, it may have been her only choice. What I find interesting is the implication of child abuse from Sasha's end, given how Marcy talked about not wanting to tell her because "nothing was happening to her". Which creates an interesting possibility that didn't exist really in canon, which is for Sasha to call Anne out on something, and be completely right to do so. As for Valeriana... wow, can't believe the newt is homophobic, could not be me. (sarcasm). But yeah, the fact that she just... showed up when Anne was at her lowest to whisk her away, and the fact that "cult" shows up twice over in your s2 chapter descriptions... I get the sneaking suspicion that you're leaning into the "Valeriana orchestrated the events of the plot" angle, to which I say *interesting.*
Hey Cynda! I was wondering when you would come by, gonna compile my answers to this and your other asks right here for efficiencies sake, but let me start by saying thanks for leaving such thoughtful questions/comments for me ^_^
Anne's Prevalence in An Alchemist Abroad
So not gonna get too deep into it here, but I will say that AU!Anne will be around more than C!Sasha was in Season 2 of the show. Just to give a ballpark.
Marcy's Home Life & Motivations
It wasn't every night, but Marcy definitely was feeding herself when things got too busy. Which is awful terrible quietly tragic a great show of resourcefulness! And I'm glad that Marcy's motives are sympathetic. That was a big goal of that chapter and this season in general. Not justified mind you, but sympathetic.
Marcy's View of Sasha's Home Life
So Sasha's home life is complicated and bad in a very different way from Marcy, which we will get to in S2. However I will say that Marcy has also downplayed her own needs/wants for most of her life both with her biofamily and her friendship. So her undervaluing the hurt she has felt is not out of character.
Edit: Whoops forgot to Address Val lol
Valeriana
While I get why everyone is angry at her. I will say in her defense, she didn’t force, manipulate, or even prod Anne to leave. She just gave her a second option when Anne felt she had none.
Tumblr media
No, that was a funny guess. It wasn't super intentional, its very much a thing that I think I will explain and people will go 'oh that makes sense'. There wasn't a super clear wink/nod
That would be very funny though
Tumblr media
Oh man that would be so mean! Holy shit. Man I had considered leaving a coy 'Guess We'll See ;)' kind of answer, but honestly no thats not in the cards for this AU. I could see Sasha possibly going for it, she doesn't know they had dated, and probably wouldn't care if she did. Marcy would probably let it happen, considering her own self worth/guilt complex at the moment. I think the deal breaker here is Anne though, in that even as hurt as she is, I don't think she would be that spiteful given the circumstances. God so much drama if she did though.
Tumblr media
Sorry to disappoint but that was a typo, wherever it was. 20,000 words is a lot to work through. I probably left out or missed the 's' key.

The Killing Joke

BATMAN: THE KILLING JOKE MAY 1988 BY ALAN MOORE, BRIAN BOLLAND AND JOHN HIGGINS (ORIGINAL VERSION)
Tumblr media
SYNOPSIS (FROM DC DATABASE)
A concerned Batman visits Arkham Asylum and goes to Joker's cell. The Joker is sitting alone in his cell, playing with a deck of cards and Batman sits in the opposite end of the table. The Dark Knight tells Joker that the constant madness of their lives must end, or otherwise one of them will surely die at the hands of the other. Joker doesn't move and keeps playing with the cards, and Batman grabs the clown's arm, infuriated. Batman notices that he has white stains on his hands and grabs the man in front of him, who is just a man dressed and wearing make-up to look like the Joker. Batman questions the man about the location of the Joker, who has escaped Arkham and is on the loose.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Joker is looking to buy an abandoned amusement park and after he checks the whole place, he kills the owner and claims the park as his own. However, Joker is lost in thoughts and he starts remembering memories from a past life.
The man who would become the Joker is an unnamed engineer who quits his job at a chemical company to become a stand-up comedian, only to fail miserably. Desperate to support his pregnant wife, he agrees to guide two criminals into the plant for a robbery. During the planning, the police come and inform him that his wife has died in a household accident involving an electric baby bottle heater. Grief-stricken, the engineer tries to withdraw from the plan, but the criminals strong-arm him into keeping his commitment to them.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
At the plant, the criminals make him don a special mask to become the infamous Red Hood. Unknown to the engineer, this disguise is simply the criminals' scheme to implicate any accomplice as the mastermind to divert attention from themselves.
Once inside, they almost immediately blunder into security personnel, and a violent shootout and chase ensues. The criminals are gunned down, and the engineer finds himself confronted by Batman, who is investigating the disturbance. Panicked, the engineer deliberately jumps into the chemical plant's toxic waste catch-basin vat to escape Batman, and is swept through a pipe leading to the outside. Once outside, he discovers to his horror that the chemicals have permanently bleached his skin chalk white, stained his lips ruby red, and dyed his hair bright green. This turn of events, compounding the man's misfortunes of that one day, drives him completely insane and results in the birth of the Joker.

Joker makes his move and he knocks on the door of Commissioner Gordon. Barbara opens the door and is shocked at the sight of the Joker, dressed in a tourist outfit and pointing a gun at her. Joker shoots Barbara in the spine and his henchmen enter the house and knock Commissioner Gordon out, while Joker starts undressing the wounded Barbara and takes out a camera.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Barbara is taken to a hospital and the doctors tell Bullock that the damage caused by the bullet would make her unable to use her legs ever again. Batman visits Barbara and when she recovers, she begs Batman to save her father from whatever the Joker has planned.
Joker takes Gordon and imprisons him in a run-down amusement park. His deformed henchmen then strip Gordon naked and cage him in the park's freak show. He chains Gordon to one of the park's rides and cruelly forces him to view giant pictures of his wounded daughter in various states of undress. Once Gordon completes the maddening gauntlet, the Joker ridicules him as an example of "the average man," a naive weakling doomed to insanity.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Batman searches all over the city for Joker with no good results. Suddenly, the Bat-Signal beacons in the night and Harvey Bullock gives Batman two tickets to the abandoned amusement park. As Batman arrives to save Gordon, the Joker retreats into the funhouse. Gordon's sanity is intact despite the ordeal, and he insists that Batman capture the Joker "by the book" in order to "show him that our way works". Batman enters the funhouse and faces the Joker's traps, while the Joker tries to persuade his old foe that the world is inherently insane and thus not worth fighting for. Eventually, Batman tracks down the Joker and subdues him.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Batman then attempts to reach out to him to give up crime and put a stop to their years-long war. The Joker declines, however, ruefully saying "It's too late for that... far too late". He then tells Batman a joke, which reflects their current situation and is funny enough to make the normally stone-faced Batman laugh. While they are laughing, Batman reaches across to Joker. The picture moves away from the two foes, and they stop laughing abruptly while the sirens of the police cars keep getting louder as they approach the two men. In the end all noise cease and only the rain keeps pouring down.

REVIEW
It wasn’t just Bolland who regretted paralyzing Barbara Gordon. Alan Moore also does.
I asked DC if they had any problem with me crippling Barbara Gordon - who was Batgirl at the time - and if I remember, I spoke to Len Wein, who was our editor on the project ... [He] said, 'Yeah, okay, cripple the bitch.' It was probably one of the areas where they should've reined me in, but they didn't. -Alan Moore
This is a story that could blend in any continuity (and it even blends with the New 52). But I think it’s obvious that Moore was thinking of the pre-crisis Batman when he did this. There is an obvious portrait of the extended Batfamily, including Batwoman and Bat-mite. Even the original Batgirl, all of them were retconned out of existence at the time.
Of all of Moore works, I think Killing Joke is the easiest to read and re-read (Watchmen can be re-read infinite times, but it’s twelve issues). As a result, I lost count of how many times I bought it. I had the “Argentinian” version, then I had one of the many original editions, then the Deluxe Edition, which I sold, and then bought it again when I moved into New Zealand. I also have the digital version from Comixology. But I have to warn you, the original version and the deluxe version, two different comics. And both are good.
The original comic had the work of John Higgins on colors, while the Deluxe version is only Brian Bolland. And digitally colored as well! Bolland also did small tweaks in most pages, so the two versions are different in more than just colors. I like the approach Higgins took on some pages, but the deluxe version is neater.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
If you can have both... have both!
The story is famous for its ambiguous ending. Not only about the fate of the Joker, but on whether Batman went crazy when his parents were killed. The final joke is meant to be about Batman and the Joker, they are both crazy, but one of them is clearly far more insane.
I am not sure if Batman is crazy, I think crazy is the wrong term. He is still a child avenging his parents by fighting a never-ending line of criminals. That’s insane. But there is a way out of it for him (but it is hardly considered by writers for obvious reasons). The Joker on the other hand is fighting to remain insane (at least in this novel), because reality was too much for him to handle.
See, insanity is very subjective. Joker thought that he could prove to anyone, that going insane was just a bad day away. He is clearly wrong here, but he is not so wrong about Batman.
Funny thing is that the premise of one of them killing each other at some point eventually came true in “Endgame”.
Another fun fact, Joker’s cell number is 0801, which in numerology means “HA”.
The Deluxe Edition also includes a short story by Bolland from Batman: Black and White. But recolored.

I obviously give this novel a score of 10

A Pesar De Ciertas Joyas Notables

via Politics – FiveThirtyEight
Democrats are favored to take back the Senate this year, according to our forecast. And that’s true, regardless of which of the three versions of the forecast you look at.
In fact, the Lite (polls only), Classic (polls and fundamentals), and Deluxe (polls, fundamentals and expert race ratings) don’t currently show that much difference. In our Deluxe version of the forecast, which is the default version, Democrats have a 74 in 100 chance of winning a majority, and in both the Classic and Lite versions, Democrats have at least a 77 in 100 shot.
This reflects the fact that both the polling and fundamentals contain good news for Democrats. If we dig deeper into the different versions of our forecast, we can see whether polls show more or less competitive races than the fundamentals and election handicappers’ ratings suggest.
Here’s a look at just how much different versions of our forecast differ in the 19 contests that aren’t considered “safe” (meaning that no party has a 95 in 100 chance or better of winning) in both the Deluxe and Lite versions of our forecast, based on the Democratic chances of victory in each contest:
Difference in the Democratic win probability between the Deluxe and Lite versions of FiveThirtyEight’s Senate forecast, as of Oct. 27 at 4:50 p.m.

*Special election.
Excludes races that each version of the forecast considers safe for one party (a 95 in 100 chance or better of winning the race).
Topline take away: In these competitive races, Democrats have a greater than 1 in 2 shot in winning in 9 of these races, according to the Deluxe version of our forecast. And in many of them, Democrats’ odds might be even higher based on the latest polls. Georgia’s special election is a weird exception, since there are more than two major-party candidates running,1 but Georgia’s other Senate race plus the contests in Maine and North Carolina show that Democrats have gotten some really good polls recently. This is notable because all three are Republican-held seats where Democratic victories could be enough to spell a Democratic majority in the Senate — depending on the presidential race — as the GOP currently has a 53 to 47 majority.2
Let’s start with Georgia’s other Senate race (the one that isn’t a special election). This race, which pits incumbent Republican Sen. David Perdue against Democrat Jon Ossoff, falls in the “toss-up” zone in the Lite edition of our forecast — where neither party has a 60 percent chance or better of winning — while it leans toward the GOP in the Deluxe version. That difference comes down to Georgia’s traditional Republican lean, which is at odds with some polls that show Ossoff leading Perdue, but it’s possible that these polls are picking up on a move away from the fundamentals in Georgia. According to our adjusted average of Senate polls in this race, Perdue only leads by 0.7 points.
In Maine and North Carolina, meanwhile, the different versions of the forecast agree that Democrats have an advantage, but in both states the polls point to a much stronger edge. Take Maine. If we look just at the polls-version of our forecast, Democrat Sara Gideon’s odds jump from around 6 in 10 to about 3 in 4 thanks to Gideon’s 6-point lead in our adjusted average of Senate polls. This could prove important for Gideon, too, because of Maine’s ranked-choice voting rules, which reallocate votes based on voters’ second choice (or third choice, etc.) until one candidate has a majority. The bigger the lead for Gideon, the harder it will be for Sen. Susan Collins to catch up, even if the incumbent is the second-choice candidate for many third-party voters. (Of course, this assumes no one wins a majority of first-choice votes, which could happen). And in North Carolina, it’s a similar story if we look at just the polls: Democrat Cal Cunningham’s odds jump from around 3 in 5 to almost 3 in 4. He was involved in a sexting scandal in early October, but that doesn’t seem to have greatly altered the trajectory of the race.
Some other contests also see meaningful Democratic improvement in the Lite version of our forecast, albeit not as much as in those other three states. In Arizona, Democrat Mark Kelly has long outpaced appointed Republican Sen. Martha McSally in the polls, and as such, his chances get only better in the polls version of our forecast, even though the Deluxe version takes into account his incredible fundraising edge. And in Michigan, the polls give Democratic Sen. Gary Peters a slightly cushier edge against Republican John James, who has managed to run nearly even with Peters in fundraising. In the GOP-held seats in Alaska and Kansas, the Democratic candidates are pretty clear underdogs, but their chances do tick upward in the polls-only version of the forecast.
But the polls don’t give Democrats a better shot at winning everywhere. Importantly, the Lite version of our forecast points to Alabama Democratic Sen. Doug Jones being even more of a goner than the Deluxe version. Jones was always going to have a difficult time in a state that President Trump might win by 20 points at the top of the ticket, and his 11-point deficit against Republican Tommy Tuberville in our adjusted average of Senate polls in this race looks like too much to overcome. A GOP pickup in Alabama will force Democrats to have to pick up a fourth seat the GOP currently holds if they want to have a shot at the majority, too.
Beyond Alabama, the polls also give Republicans a slightly better shot in two more peripheral races: Minnesota and New Mexico, seats currently held by Democrats. In Minnesota, Democratic Sen. Tina Smith won a special election in 2018 but is now competing for a full term, and she faces former Rep. Jason Lewis. Smith has a clear fundraising edge, but she leads by a little less than 8 points in our adjusted polling average of the race, so the Lite version doesn’t view her as quite so sure a bet. The same is true of Democratic Rep. Ben Ray Luján in New Mexico, where he’s favored against Republican Mark Ronchetti. With Democratic Sen. Tom Udall’s retirement, the lack of an Democratic incumbent defending the seat should help Republican chances, but even with that, the polls think it’s a more competitive race than either the fundamentals or experts.
All in all, though, the polls-only Lite version of the forecast gives Democrats a better shot at winning many critical seats in the battle for Senate control. And that has an impact not only on their overall chances of winning the Senate, but also on just how big of a majority they might be able to win. Whereas the Deluxe version gives Democrats an 80 percent chance of winning between 48 to 55 seats, the Lite version gives them an 80 percent chance of capturing 48 to 57 seats. In other words, if the polls are a better predictor than the fundamentals and experts this year, Democrats may be able to win a bigger majority than we might otherwise expect.
