I just got back from Japan and I’m so happy I had the opportunity to see モダンかアナーキー the night before I left! I went into the movie because I knew Murakami Nijirō was in it but I walked out of the small theater absolutely floored. While I saw some reviews complaining online about how some of the audio is quiet or not balanced, and that the lighting can be a bit too dim at points, I think all these choices really added to the atmosphere of the film!

While I do know some Japanese, the movie honestly relied a lot more on physical acting than dialogue and the dialogue that did occur (for the most part) was either whispered or too quick for me to pick up. I will say that even without understanding most of the dialogue, all the actors knocked it out of the park, their physical performances (especially the eyes of Yumi Kawai and Kaneko Daichi which somehow managed to take my breath away with how expressive they were). The final scene of the movie was especially haunting and made my jaw drop, a brutal few minutes of aragaki played by murakami nijiro broken and bloodied after jumping off a overpass stumbling up the stairs to jump off again and take his life after failing the first time.

The entire film was Kinetic in a way hard to describe in words, the dark nighttime streets of Nerima and the cluttered apartments of disillusioned youth painting a realistic and addicting picture. The way the story plays out, cutting back between after Aragaki’s death and to the events leading up to it, while perhaps unconventional, was a brilliant decision and had me on the edge of my seat.

I reached out to the official twitter account to inquire if they would ever consider releasing it digitally or physically on a DVD but they unfortunately said that they have no plans for that. While I’m disappointed since my love for this movie is overwhelming and I’d love to just watch it over and over again, there is something special about only being able to/having watched it at a small theater late at night in a foreign country that makes my experience even more special.

I did buy the pamphlet that was available for purchase, and it is a wonderful insight into the directors thoughts both on the movie, actors, and how the movie came to be. I especially love the art, both the front cover art, the page art, and the small portraits of each character. The colored pencil texture/style really works well with the tone of the movie and the emotions it brings out.

Modern or anarchy has instantly become one of my favorite movies, and I can’t wait to see more from the director Daichi Sugimoto!

Clara debuts for Bomin, Viola and Marianna! Thoughts?

Bomin and Marianna have always caught my eye so far, I'm really pleased with them. Viola I hadn't ever really noticed until that competition, and even then I wasn't terribly impressed. But hope she's improved since then!

Curious to see which cast will get the live cinema of Swan Lake for Royal Ballet. Also wondering if we will get any debut for Swan Lake

I am still not-so-patiently waiting for Campbell's debut in Swan Lake. I'm sure it won't happen but please, Kevin, shock me.

I think Swan Lake is probably going to be Naghdi/Ball or there's a slight chance of Kaneko. I'm really hoping for Lamb though; there's not a professional recording of her Swan Lake and she doesn't have too many left.

Osipova and why she only has 4 shows for fall season (theory/spectulation)

I don't want to be weird about her personal life, but I think there's a few reasons why Osipova doesn't have a lot of shows this upcoming autumn season (based on what I've read/heard):

1. She said in a 2022 interview (I think in the Guardian?) that she wants to have children. I'm praying she's able to conceive. It's going to be such big news in the ballet world if she does get pregnant/announces her pregnancy

2. She said she wanted to focus more as a director of her Bloom Dance project in the future rather than perform the same dance roles she's done so many times (Kitri, Odette/Odile). 

3. She's now 37 and embracing age, even said something like "I used to get 16 shows but now I get like 2, 3, 4 shows now." 

Basically I believe that she wants to focus more on her personal life now and have children before she gets older. 

I think all of this could be true but I don't think it's particularly strange she's only performing 4 times in the autumn. there are plenty of principals doing that, it just doesn't happen to all be in the same production. She probably isn't doing Nutcracker because she has to do two casts of Don Q into November and then is going to be filmed in Manon in Feb.

Do you happen to know why there is so much criticism about natalia osipova? In my opinion she's a true talent and definitively a ballerina that will go down in history for her amazing feats. And I just see people kind of brush her off like she's not the legend she is! I'd love to know if you have more information on this..

There's a few reasons, I think. Firstly, she isn't the type of 'trendy' ballerina we see today. This may be controversial but I see her much more like a Soviet-era dancer than a modern one. She is fast, she isn't too concerned about getting her legs as high as possible, and performance comes before technique. She is not long and graceful. I also think that people who see her in person have vastly different experiences seeing her in-person vs. on a video. She dances for everyone in the house. Her expressions are exaggerated in order to do this. In a video, this comes across as overacting instead.

yah, the titles a work in progress...

anyways! as i'm writing the fifth chapter of iswesib, i realized that i've never really given a complete layout/desc of the side characters i created for the story. so, i decided to make a public post about it! (in case anyone else wanted to see) so! first, we start off with Suzuki Daichi, akira's friend since kindergarten. he's twelve and has two older siblings. his dad, Suzuki Mintaro, is one of the targets akira has for mementos! he has brown eyes and black hair, and is only a little taller than akira. he's the biggest gossip in town, often spending a lot of time by his mother's side while she talks with neighbors. Kaneko Iki is another one of akira's friends! kaneko's eleven, with black hair and dark brown eyes. she's shorter than daichi and akira, but it lends well to her gymnastics, which she was the best in the town at! (until the yoshizawa sisters came into town, of course!) she's been friends with Yamaguichi Hanako since they were in second grade. speaking of Yamaguichi Hanako, lets talk about them! yamaguichi's eleven years old, and the tallest in the group. they're very passionate about sports, being in basketball themself. they're a bit too sporty for most, but they managed to make a lifelong friend in Kaneko Iki. they're the older sibling of their triplet sisters, and prefer to stay out of the three toddler's way until after they've had their nap. they have light brown hair and dark brown eyes.
