Wood Engraving Wednesday

JOHN LAWRENCE

Once again we turn to the fanciful engravings of English illustrator and wood engraver John Lawrence (b. 1933), this time from a small (4.25" x 3") 1992 Folio Society edition of Robert Browning's version of The Pied Piper of Hamelin, printed at The Bath Press in Bath, England on Fabriano Ingres laid paper. The engravings themselves are only 3" x 2", but they are vivid and richly detailed.

John Lawrence, whose career spans nearly 70 years, is one of England's most-respected living wood engravers. He has illustrated well over 200 books and has taught his craft at the Brighton School of Art, Camberwell School of Art, and Cambridge School of Art from the 1960s to 2010. He has influenced generations of noted contemporary wood engravers, and was himself a student of Gertrude Hermes (view some wood engravings by Hermes we have posted).

Our copy of the Folio Society's Pied Piper is yet another donation from the estate of our late friend and colleague Dennis Bayuzick. The book was originally bound in full moire silk by Hunter and Foulis, but our copy was specially rebound in 2001 by English bookbinder Stephen Conway (see below).

This will only work if we ignore the obvious problem with aging and make everyone as old as when they were onscreen for the majority of the time all at the same time (so ignoring returns and later sad deaths like Ted in the numbered episodes and people leaving the service like Rod/Yorkie etc.)

I have included those who rose through the ranks or 'acted up' onscreen in those positions as well [For example - acting Superintendent Derek Conway would be allowed to be chosen as a Superintendent, however you couldn't promote someone who hadn't been seen onscreen as that rank - say making Will Fletcher a Superintendent] It's likely that I've forgotten some so please feel free to point it out and add them in!

You obviously cannot have people in more than one position however, so unfortunately (for me!) there's no Inspector Smith, Sgt Smith and PC Smith all working at the same time!

There are no rules on the sexes of characters (ie - you don't have to have 6 PC's of each sex). The numbers are as follows...

Birthday remembrance

HARVEY KORMAN

February 15, 1927 – May 29, 2008 (81)

Harvey Herschel Korman was a Character actor who excelled in comedy and performed in television and film. Korman was also a voice artist. His big break was being a featured performer on CBS' The Danny Kaye Show, but he is best remembered for his Emmy award winning performances on the comedy series The Carol Burnett Show. He was featured in some now classic sketches with Burnett and other cast members and with comedian Tim Conway. Korman also appeared in several films by Mel Brooks.

Korman was married to Donna Ehlert from 1960 to 1977, and they had two children together, Maria and Christopher Korman. He married Deborah Korman (née Fritz) in 1982 and was married to her until his death in 2008. They had two daughters together, Kate and Laura Korman.

Korman died at age 81 as the result of complications from a ruptured abdominal aortic aneurysm he had suffered four months earlier.

Just got back from once again seeing the Young'uns' Christmas gig at Conway Hall, London, which was spectacular (and knowing the songs better this year helped me join in, especially with the Goose Truce!). I love their cover of John Connolly's I Am Christmas, it's a beautiful song and I need them to release a Christmas album, because Kate Rusby's version (and John Connolly's for that matter!) while good, doesn't have the same warmth and companionship that Sean, Michael, and David bring to it.

Books of 2023

I was pleased to read lots of books this year! I greatly enjoyed the majority of these - the only one I wouldn't really recommend was Rated M for Mature - and the favourites are bolded. There were quite a lot of others that I didn't end up finishing, which were mostly memoirs of people who I felt interested in but didn't find their writing very compelling, and some second-world fantasy novels that didn't grab me. Most of this year's reading was historical, contemporary, memoirs, or horror: it was only towards the end of the year that I got some fantasy in there, which is funny as I've always thought of myself as a big fantasy fan - if anyone has any queer non-YA fantasy recommendations, I'd love to have them. The most recent new-to-me fantasy I loved was The Sacred Dark series by May Peterson, if that helps!

I was really happy to read Alison Rumfitt, Torrey Peters, Maya Deane, Lee Mandelo, EE Ottoman, and Brandon Taylor for the first time in particular, and look forward to reading more of them in the future; Ducks by Kate Beaton hit hard and stuck with me; Passion and Play is a massively illuminating read for anyone interested in writing intimate scenes in games and made me feel a ton more confident and intentional in doing so; I loved returning to and crying over old favourites Elizabeth Wein and Terry Pratchett after a very long time.
