Cine online: Alex and The Handyman (2017)

Alex (el muy expresivo Keaton Nigel Cooke) "conversa" con Jared. La imagen muestra que éste no es más que un muñeco conformado por la cabeza de un plato plástico, una cara cuyos rasgos fueron delieados con lápices y un traje adornando una silla. Minutos después conocemos al verdadero Jared (Aaron Profumo), que acuerda con la madre del niño (Hogan Gorman) tres jornadas de trabajo en tareas de carpintería de la mansión en la que viven (la mujer se ha divorciado de su esposo).

Alex, que tiene nueve años, comienza entonces a acosar al hombre, hablándole sobre su película favorita ("El club de las divorciadas", "The First Wives Club", 1996), estudiando la información de su página de Facebook, escribiéndole una carta o dedicándole un banquete improvisado. Luego, acudirá a estrategias más inusuales para un niño de su edad.

Nicholas Colía es el creador de esta pieza de humor negro (el tono amable y colorido con que se presenta la situación se convierte en la fachada perfecta de las verdaderas intenciones del niño) en el que la obsesión de un pequeño con un apuesto y desganado desconocido alcanza ribetes insospechados.

Ganz besonders schön, anrührend und nur ein ganz kleines bisschen absurd  geworden sind Patrick Wangs weitläufige, zweiteilige Geschichten rund um das kleinstädtische Kulturzentrum Bread Factory. Ein vorgeblich chinesisches Aktionskünstlerpaar ist nebenan in einem neugebauten Aktionskünstlertempel eingezogen und macht ihnen die Schulzuschüsse streitig, und auch sonst ist es schwierig. Überall Gentrifizierung, Touristen und steptanzende Yuppies im Café, ganz zu schweigen vom singenden Immobilienhai-Quartett. Der Besucheransturm für ihre Produktion von Hecuba ist auch etwas mager, so daß sich Greta und Dorothea, des reizende Paar, das die Einrichtung seit 40 Jahren leitet, fast fragen, ob das alles die Mühe Wert ist. Aber anregender als das, was die Aktionkünstler machen ist es allemal, und Tyne Daly, die die resolute Kunst- und Bildungsverfechterin Dorothea spielt, hat sowieso schon mal 1000 Pluspunkte, weil sie auf der allerersten Aufnahme von Gypsy, die ich mir zulegte, Mama Rose sang. Und sie kann auch kochen.

『トッド・ソロンズの子犬物語』Wiener-Dog（2016）

映画感想一発目がトッド・ソロンズっていう私ってどうよ、と自己ツッコミしつつ。WOWOW録画鑑賞。

トッド・ソロンズ、一生懸命映画を観てた20年ぐらい前、一生懸命観てたのでもちろん彼の作品もしっかり観ていました。でも2004年の『おわらない物語　アビバの場合』以降観てないなあと思ったら実際彼の仕事もちょっと間が空いていて、2009年『Life During Wartime』（これは日本未公開？）2011年『ダークホース～リア獣エイブの恋～』（邦題…）と続くらしい。そしてこの『〜子犬物語』が今のところ最新作のようです。

トッド・ソロンズ作品はどれも一見普通の人たちの普通の様子を普通に描きながら、その普通の中にとんでもないものをぶち込んで来る。それも下品とか下劣とかそれ犯罪だから、みたいなことが多く、別にそういうの全然キライじゃないんですけど大っぴらに言ったり文字にしたりするのにちょっと躊躇する自分もいたりします。イイ年してと言われそうだけど、でもこういうある種キワドイ系を好きと言っていい場面とそこは知らんぷりしたほうがトクだという場面はあるというのはそれこそ長く生きてきたので感覚として持ってるんで使い分けて生きています。何の話だ。

あ、ところでグレタ・ガーウィグ演じるこの↓女の子の名前はドーンだったりします（ニヤニヤ）。そして、彼女の目線の先にいる人はブランドンだったりします（ニヤニヤ）。

今作は、これも彼お得意のいくつかのパートに分かれたオムニバスな作りで、共通してダックスフント（Wiener-Dogというんですね）が登場します。この犬が最初は同じ犬として話が繋がってるんですが途中から同じかどうかもよくわからなくなって、まあそこは特に拘らないのかもですが、その犬を介しての主に家族って何？みたいなことを描いている…ような。一番自分の胸に響いたのはエレン・バースティン演じるものすごく愛想の悪いおばあさんのパートで、彼女の見る夢の中に少女時代の自分がいっぱい出てきて、それが「素直になれなかったあの時の私」とか「間違った決断をしたあの時の私」みたいな「人生の節目節目で違う選択をして捨ててきた自分」という表現で、あれにはさすがに泣かされてしまった。しかもその揚げ句に…という。

オチのどぎつさ（いや、さすがにアレはどうなの）はあるにしても『ハピネス』あたりに比べたら今作は表現やディテールは控えめおとなしめ優しさもアリ？だったかも知れません。なんならお子さまに見せても大丈夫かも？と思えるぐらいに。犬可愛いし。いや、ダメか、犬可哀相だし。そういえば『ハピネス』は当時一般向け試写会で観たんですが、普通にハガキで応募するような試写会だったんでお客さんはフツーのお年寄りも多くて、というわけで案の定途中で退場する人がいっぱいいて笑いました。いやあこれを一般向け試写会やる配給会社ってチャレンジングなのか何も考えてないのかって。あの時のお年寄りの皆さん、今作なら許してくれたかも知れない。ムリか。

#ACMI #MQFF Boys on Boys Shorts. A fairly good collection of 5 short films. Runner up for me was Heavy Weight from the UK, shot by Jonny Ruff in 2 days and starring the writer, Chuku Modu & first timer Jace Moody; a small, tough look at internalised homophobia. Best was the very funny & poignant Alex and the Handyman from the US, directed by Nicholas Colia & starring the amazing (11 year old?) Keaton Nigel Cooke. (at ACMI)

I'm torn. Every episode has some truly funny moments - the incessant questions of the kid; the Mexican hitchhikers; the young film student unable to name a movie and the bomb; Fantasy - but the stories overall are really depressing and its main characters rarely likable. So while it's probably Solondz's most accessible movie, I can't say I completely liked it. The tone of his movies really is special.

Side note, DeVito's character name is Schmerz which is German for pain.
