Beach, please
word count; 634 – f!ChubbyReader, this is for @ennoshitas-princess for @cottonlemonade's summer event, fluffy beach day with husband Ennoshita
Tumblr media
Going to the beach could be a tiring ordeal, but you haven’t known the trials of a beach day since back when you and your husband were just boyfriend and girlfriend. That’s because Ennoshita always came prepared.
You looked around in your cute bikini, one hand holding the brim of your sunhat while the other held the beach bag off the sand.
Meanwhile, Ennoshita efficiently put up the dedicated parasol and then rolled out the blanket, pinning each corner down. Not a trace of sand spilling on top of it. He got up for a second to admire his work before coming over, kissing your cheek and taking the bag, moving on to taking out the snacks and little cooling bag. “There you go, love.”
It was all so perfect, nothing could ruin a beach day with your husband.
Except maybe his high school friends.
You both sat down, double-checking your sunscreen layers before laying back, your head resting in his lap while he leaned on his elbows and observed passer-byers.
“What a great spot!”
“Ennoshita always gets the best spot.”
“What snacks did you get?”
Your eyebrows furrowed as you lifted your head, looking to the side where Nishinoya, Tanaka, Narita and Kinoshita had put another blanket overlapping yours, dragging some sand over in the process. “Why are you guys here?” Ennoshita yelled, making them all turn to him in surprise.
“You said today was beach day,” Nishinoya said as if it was obvious from there.
“Yes, with my wife.” His words were just sharp enough for you to sit up, sighing and handing him a water bottle to cool off.
“That’s okay, we can all have a relaxing day at the beach together!” you said positively. However, there was no mistaking the look in Ennoshita’s eyes. He did not agree.
And he was right.
Ennoshita tried to focus on you, he really did. At first, he was relieved someone could watch your stuff while the two of you took a long dip in the ocean, and Ennoshita couldn’t have been happier than watching you enjoy the beach even though you were wearing little to nothing. He had been there with you through learning to love yourself and loved you every step of the way.
“You’re so gorgeous, your husband is very lucky,” he cooed, sneaking his hands around you so you’d come close enough for a kiss.
“I’m the lucky one, he’s just a hopeless romantic.”
It almost made him forget about his friends until you returned to your spot and saw they had eaten up all your snacks.
Later, there was the terrifying exclamation Hey, I brought a volleyball! Even though playing got them to move away, Nishinoya had dived into the sand so much that when he came back asking for a water bottle, he carelessly dripped sand all over the two of you. Ennoshita wouldn’t have minded it so much if he didn’t know you hated having sand stuck everywhere if you could avoid it.
Finally, he had enough when the lot of them begged him to join their rally, even though they should have been perfectly fine with a two on two. You watched with pursed lips as it finally boiled over.
“Can you guys leave us alone?!” The ball dropped onto the sand with a soft sound and they were all blinking at him like sheep. “I am trying to enjoy the day with my beautiful wife before our joint vacation ends, and you guys were not part of that plan!”
One by one they pouted, kicking the sand like little boys and murmuring apologies under their breaths. “Sorry, Chikara. Sorry, Mrs. Ennoshita.”
“Don’t worry,” you assured them, laying a chubby hand on your husband’s shoulder and tilting your head cutely. “I’m having a very nice day.”

Ask Me Anything -- Keldin Sands
What were your initial thoughts upon being woken up and told you're the captain now?
For a solid week, I was dead certain that I was dreaming. I mean. I went to sleep under the assumption I’d be waking up in orbit around Hylara, then suddenly I’m waking up in the medbay but we’re still years away and the crew isn’t there and instead there’s these new people and the captain is Doctor Aspen Greaves? And then everyone’s like, oh, actually you’re the captain now? Yeah, I definitely assumed this was a coma dream. It took me a while to accept otherwise.
To be honest, even now, if I do suddenly wake up in orbit around Hylara with Captain Reimann there, I won’t be entirely surprised. I’d definitely be relieved.
Are you concerned that there are also colonists planted on the Courageous by whomever planted the crew members to sabotage/experiment on the ship?
Oh, yes. If that wasn’t a serious risk, I wouldn’t have been recruited.
Do you feel like the stressors of the many situations are getting to you?
I’ve been overstressed since I woke up from chronostasis. At this rate I’m just doing my best to keep the ship in one piece and the crew from degenerating into a violent stress-crazed mob.
When you first read Kinoshita's notes what did you think of former Captain Reimann's admittance that he also had a loved one aboard the ship? Did you sympathise with him?
Well, I went through proper channels and got clearance, and he smuggled someone aboard the ship against the rules, so I’m not sure how well he expected that to pan out. I mean. I do sympathise in that his loved one died; he had no reason to expect that. But he should’ve obeyed the rules, they’re there for a reason.
Do you regret taking the offer to be placed on the Courageous?
Yes! This is NOT what I signed up for!
Are there any Tarandran customs, or holidays you hope to continue on Hylara?
I don’t know how taxation will work on Hylara – I imagine that we’ll be working with a central planned economy for at least the duration of my lifetime so taxes won’t be a thing – but I intend to find some way to continue to celebrate the Yeartithe. It’s a beautiful little celebration done in Tarandra once per year, where families and friends gather for a party and exchange small gifts in thanks for the value that they provide each other. People are assured of what value they bring to the family and the community, and children are encouraged to think of their potential and showered with praise about what strong an asset they will become. Once everyone’s gotten their valuations straight, they’re ready to submit their taxes to the government as a final gift and acknowledgement of mutual value between themselves and Tarandra itself, the largest of their communities below humanity itself. It’s a wonderful celebration of individuals, families and communities, and how we help each other and bring value to the whole. Even if the economics are wildly different on Hylara, I hope to maintain enough of the celebration to keep the spirit.
It’s also a very popular time of year for marriages, adoptions, and sorting out inheritances, because doing so at the very beginning of the financial year makes next year’s Yeartithe so much simpler.
How did you meet your husband? Did you propose, or did he?
He’s a painter. My house needed painting. We got to talking when we were sorting out a shortage of Pigment XV-1994 and whether we should wait a month for resupply or just bite the bullet and go with Pigment XV-1983 instead. Ket looked me right in the eye and told me that I’d be staring at the walls of this living room for years and I didn’t need to settle for second best, snatched the pen out of my hand and rescheduled the painting for a month later on my wall calendar.
Three months later I told him he was right, I wouldn’t need to settle for second best, and I asked him to marry me. The Sands’ were a much more high profile family than the Yorlas, so convincing his family wasn’t hard; I bought him into the family with a three year free property lease for his mother that I borrowed off my grandmother in exchange for a concession on some unrelated complex family issues, and we were married by the end of the year.
If you hadn't joined the Javelin Program, what would your dream life have been?
Probably a peaceful life of designing spaceship engines and sipping tea with Ket in a Pigment XV-1994 coloured living room.
What made you fall in love with your husband?
I’m a stubborn guy, and so is he. We were always there to second-guess each others’ decisions and not let the other one get carried away with something that, in hindsight, would turn out to be very stupid. It’s a valuable asset to bring into a family or a business.
Do you miss Tarandan? What is the one thing you'd bring from there if you could?
My husband! Haha, I know, that’s a coward’s answer. The real answer is the food. The food on this ship is as good as the crew can make it, but it’s always a bit unfamiliar. It reminds me how far from home I really am.
If I could bring anything from Earth, it would be the sunset. I hope that when we build the environmental domes on Hylara, they’re transparent, or at least have windows. I want to sip coffee with Ket while watching the sunset again.
How do you imagine your first sight of Hylara?
Boringly, I expect it will be a long-distance image from the onboard light telescope, followed by an analysis from our Kleiner array to check whether Earth’s long-range data on the exoplanet is correct. We’ll want accurate data on Hylara as quickly as possible. At that distance, it’ll just be a dot in space.
Earth said that there’s a chance that there might be water oceans. I hope they’re right. It would be amazing to see oceans when we get close enough.
What are your hopes for the kind of society you guys will build when you get to the planet?
As stable and prosperous a society as we can. It’s going to be a lot of work. I don’t agree with the selection of colonists – an 80% criminal population is a horribly unstable start, and the non-criminal filtering process wasn’t all that great either. Being able to get these people all working together in a society where all of our needs are provided for and nobody’s going to steal or abuse or kill each other will be a massive challenge.
Fortunately, it won’t be my challenge. My job is to get us to the planet; the establishment of the colony can fall into more professional hands.
Did you have any pets before you left?
I had a small flock of pigeons a few years ago, but I handed them off before being selected for the program.
What do you think of Aspen now that you’ve met them, as opposed to only having read their books?
They’re… not what I expected. In writing, they’re much clearer, more direct, more certain. In person, they’re quite changeable and difficult to understand.
I think I just need to get to know them better.
What will you do if your husband doesn't make it?
I don’t know. I promised him I’d keep going. That was the promise we made to each other before going into chronostasis – if either of us had to keep going alone, we would.
But I can’t do that if he dies here. Too much is riding on my shoulders right now. If he dies, I’m going to be in a bad way for a long time, so that can’t happen until the ship and the colony no longer rely on me.
What was the worst bet you ever lost?
Oh I don’t gamble. Gambling is a mug’s game. I’ll take small ‘bets’ on the ship occasionally to help promote crew cohesion, but since the point of those is the social cohesion and not the stakes, merely taking them is a win.

Karasuno Hair Salon!AU headcanons
I went to get a haircut a while ago and my hairdresser had silver hair like Suga's and it inspired this whole mess. Also, I don't know much about the hair salon business so take this with a huge chunk of salt?? Mostly assessing based of the qualities of the characters. Do not look too closely because there will be gaps.
Characters: All of your Karasuno volleyball team favourites + Yachi, Kiyoko, Ukai, Takeda
Tumblr media
Sawamura Daichi
He takes on a senior/ manager role, has plenty of experience under his belt.
Makes small talk with the customer
Knows the regulars by names
Assigns shifts
Trains the rest of the staffs and is fairly good at all the roles
Covers whoever who can't make it
Used to give his siblings haircuts while they were growing up
I feel like he'd be open to going around to elderly homes and giving them free haircuts
Man's a guy who serves the community!!
Sugawara Koushi
He is so loved by all grandmamas and children.
Man can butter up ANYONE
and he lays it on thick
He's respectful, cheerful, and a good yapper
Children thinks he's kind and friendly
Generally pleasant guy
Will bribe children with candy so they stay still
Azumane Asahi
He knows the way he looks may scare kiddos away, so he uses his long hair to his advantage and styles it with lil' butterfly clips, pigtails and other accessories.
Has won a couple of hairdressing awards
Mostly the go-to person for more experimental styles
Has contacts in the modelling and fashion department which brings in a ton of money for the salon
The less shy children would go up to him and demands he lifts them like a lil' plane
He will never say no
Man makes a mean matcha though
Shimizu Kiyoko
Handles the makeup and photography should anyone come in with needs for bridal makeup services and other events.
Works closely with Asahi
Sometimes, they'll be out in the city together for side quests
She's a woman of many talents so pre-booking required!!!
Has a popular Instagram account dedicated to the bridal looks, mostly spread through word-of-mouth
Ennoshita Chikara
The hair salon prides themselves on incredible service as how they were trained under Ukai Sr.. So expect a nice lil drink while getting your next hairdo. The person behind the delicious coffee? Ennoshita.
Personally handles the coffee stock and orders
Has a good working relationship with the roasteries in town
Ensures each cup of coffee will brighten up your day
Does some cute doodles sometimes on the cups
WILL NOT GIVE OUT PHONE NUMBERS!! MAN'S KEEPING IT PROFESSIONAL
Cakes and other drinks are served too
Kinoshita Hisashi
Don't tell me this guy isn't the biggest gossip in this place. He easily encourages his customers to talk more, and is good at giving advice and reacting in an affirming way.
Him and Suga is always on top with the neighbourhood tea
He isn't a snitch but will act dumb about the drama
Narita Kazuhito
He plays a regular hairstylist role but helps out with Kageyama at the hairwashing station on busier days.
Has an adaptable personality so Daichi pairs him with new customers to have a feel for their personality
Tanaka Ryuunosuke
What many don't know about him is that he is a rather creative and artistic guy.
Paints nails and does incredible nail art
Can get eerily focused unlike his usual loud self
Practices new skills on Kiyoko (HIS WIFE!!)
Kiyoko ofc gets compliments and directs them to her incredible husband
And he recommends his WIFE'S makeup and photography services
SUCH A COUPLE
BUSINESS IS BOOMING
BIG MONEY BIG MONEY
Will also rock some sick nail designs, man does not care
The team also enjoy getting their nails done by him
Hinata's down for whatever's brightly coloured and funky
Kageyama doesn't do colour but does a clear coat
The team usually play with colours and designs but no rhinestones for them since it can get in the way
Nishinoya Yuu
When you need a dye job, he's the man.
Gets very excited when someone needs his services
Will talk you through the process, how to care for your new hair, and recommends the right shade for your skin etc
Does a very thorough job in explaining it all
Has a little steppy stool
I feel like he will change that dyed part of his hair quite often. Different colours. Same part. It's kinda funny.
Is very patient throughout the process
Will send a complimentary cake your way as a thank you for the many hours it takes
Hinata Shouyou
Makes light conversation with the regulars when he gives them a haircut.
Daichi also sends new customers his way since Hinata has a certain knack of interpreting someone's requests
Loves it when customers give him free reign
Usually uses that opportunity to film those blind pick challenges
Nails it usually
Kageyama Tobio
King of scalp massages
Gives a killer scalp massage
And a neck massage
Is very attentive to his customers and will always ask if the pressure is too hard or too soft
Instantly relaxing
Plays an assistant role to Noya, incredible eye for colour mixing
Approaches every task with dedication.
Man's also turning to Asahi for advice on creating the next big look
Star employee!! Despite being a little socially stunted
Is working on that though!!
Yamaguchi Tadashi
Apprentice under Ennoshita and handles social media with Yachi
Appears in their TikToks
Likes making different latte art designs. His current go to is a bear since it appeals to everyone. The peacock is a challenge though.
Brainstorms a lot of the content ideas with Yachi, but he's usually the face of it
Has a strong online presence though despite being a little shy in real life
Occasionally, he goes to Suga to ask for tips and learns from him. Suga's more than willing to share his knowledge!
Tsukishima Kei
I see him as taking this only as a part-time job though just for the money.
I see him working together with Daichi to go around giving free haircut to the community centres
He's being paid for it and that's fine by him
It's not the ideal part-time job but it's near his college, pays decently and fits his schedule
His best friend works there and enjoys it, so that's a little bit of a bonus too
I can imagine his brother being the type to be quite fond of caring for the community, so it rubs off on him a bit too
Daichi is understanding of his frank personality. In the end, it really is just a job so no big deal.
Yachi Hitoka
Handles marketing and social media.
It started as a kind deed to help the small business grow but ended up liking the team and stayed on.
Is definitely why they're blowing up online
Usually films the TikToks but plans the content with Yamaguchi
Very on trend, very quick on trends
Also knows who what the people want to see
Ukai Kenshin
Runs his mother's store but spreads the word about the hair salon.
His grandfather started hair salon, and when his dad married, his dad didn't realise that tending to the farm would be incredibly demanding and it was impossible to hold on to both businesses.
The hair salon went to his uncle for a while until he fell ill.
Somehow it fell into the hands of the Takeda family.
Completely entrusts it to the new team to run it.
Is very fond of the new team.
Takeda Ittetsu
He grew up going to the hair salon.
His grandfather used to hang out there with Ukai Sr. all the time.
They'd sit outside and have a smoke, next to lil Takeda who would be doing his homework.
Has many good memories with his grandfather at that hair salon.
So when it was struggling, he struck a deal to run it instead.
Now he's out building opportunities for them, getting them signed on with new businesses and partnerships.
He has a meeting with Shiseido next week.

MEET: EDNA NAMIKAWA
Tumblr media Tumblr media
◈Age: 54
◈Job: Before the time of her hospitalization, this retired nurse was a housewife.
◈Relationship Status: Second and immensely treasured wife of Hiroshi Namikawa. It's been 25 years and she still can't place what she did to deserve such love and affection but she appreciates it anyway. Then, return it 10 fold.
◈Family: Aside from her husband and daughter, Edna has no family living in Japan. Most of her family lives in the states. Before she got sick, Hiro made sure to fly her and Arika out a couple times a year to see her family for as long as she could remember. She almost forgot what being homesick was even like. For what she lacks in Japan, she makes up for it back home. She's the 5th youngest of 21 children- So, to say that she comes from a big family is a bit of an understatement. It may have contributed greatly to why she wasn't initially thrilled when she found out that she was pregnant with Arika all those years ago. It wasn't the sole reason (of course) but remembering her childhood made her petrified of motherhood. She's happy with her decision now though. She wouldn't trade her daughter for anything in the world.
◈Friends: Being the wife of a man like Hiroshi Namikawa comes with a lot of social pressure but Edna navigates it so elegantly that people naturally gravitate toward her with little effort from her end. She's made friends with the wives of Hiroshi's associates. Ironically, she knows that he truly can't stand but she's nothing if not graceful. So, they would never know it. Oh, of course! Hiro would love for the four of us to go to your husband's favorite golf resort. I'll be sure to run it by him but you know that man's schedule. He can never seem to give himself time to unwind! I just give him an earful about it... *playful sigh* But, men. What can we do? Hehe.
◈Hobbies: She's the reason Arika took up sewing to begin with. In fact, she taught her a lot of what she knows. She likes to make new things, she likes to fix old things and she likes mixing the old with the new and seeing what comes out of it. A lot of the cast can point to at least one, minimum, article of clothing that Edna has made for them at some point in time. It's not professional by any means but it's pretty good for someone self-taught. She likes to crochet as well. She's recently, taken up quilting but she only intends to make the one and leave it alone. Edna also has a knack for baking which makes her someone that people can call when they're struggling with homemade desserts. Also, (and this will come up alot) but she thoroughly enjoys singing, too. As a housewife, Edna found it was best to keep herself busy with little hobbies as much as possible.
◈Favorite food: There's no way around it: Red velvet cake. It's not food. It's dessert but still it's the best thing since sliced bread in her eyes. She's got a recipe for red velvet cake that can knock the Lord's socks off- her words, which is saying a lot because she tries to avoid blasphemy (funny). The real secret is in her cream cheese frosting but she'll never tell. Not even Hiro knows and he knows everything.
◈Favorite Item: For her 50th birthday, Hiroshi, Arika and Kenjiro all chipped in to get her this top of the line sewing machine and cabinet that she'd been eyeing for some time. She could have bought it any time but she hated spending large amounts of money on herself. And a person spending large amounts of money on her made her uncomfortable, which was why Hiroshi wasn't allowed to buy it for her. They all rationalized that if they portioned off the price, it wouldn't be as bad and she couldn't say no to all of them. She loved it so much that she cried. She made sure to make use of it as often as she could so that their money didn't go to waste. When she was sad that she had to leave it behind when she was transferred to the Okinawa facility, Hiroshi somehow made sure that thing was in her room before she even touched the ground that morning.
Want to learn a little more about the others?
→ Goro → Hiroshi → Arika → Kenjiro

Hi,.....if you don't mind me asking, can I ask your top 5 (or top 3) favorite characters from BNHA? Amd why do you love them? And your top 5 favorite moments from the series? Sorry if you've answered this question before....If you've answered them before, do you mind changed the amswers to Sk8 series....(Again sorry if I'm asking too much)....
Thanks so much for your blog, love reading them ......
HOW DID I ALMOST FORGET TO ANSWER THIS, WTH, KIYA?!
Anyways!
Okay, I'll do 3 since I also want to answer for SK8! First, BNHA!
My favorite characters are (and should be no surprise to anyone who has been following my blog long enough 😆)...
Miruko - hands down she easily became my favorite the moment she graced her presence in the story. She's the #5 Pro Hero who just hops around and kicks ass. She's a "no nonsense, let's get this done" character and I have to applaud Sakaya Kinoshita and Anairis Quiñoes for providing such great voices for her. Both women really put "I'm a badass and I know it" into voicing Miruko. There's also the fact that rabbits are one of my favorite animals.
Midoriya - He's unique to me. He has a range that I like. He could look like he couldn't hurt a fly and then the next he looks out for blood. His green curls and freckles are nice touches to his character. He's sweet, kind and has a sharp mind. But he's also stubborn, quick to anger, irrational. Out of all BNHA characters, he is the one I do relate to the most when it comes to having emotions. Again, I'm applauding voice actors here because Daiki Yamashita and Justin Briner bring Midoriya to life on the screen for me. I could not imagine any other voices but theirs for the sub and dub, I just can't.
Rock Lock - I'm giving Rock Lock love here because he just doesn't get enough of it. He's one of the few adult characters that really did bring up a good point about the kids in season 4 and yet does recognize their potential. He immediately gave me Dad vibes and I was right that he was indeed one. Which is another element to his character I love. He thinks about his family, he is really a softie. I love that for him. When he thought about making it back to his wife and son, I teared up a little. And I'll bring race into this for a bit because it is not often we do get Black characters in media with a softer side, let alone in media not created by Black people. So it was nice to see an actual family man with a job like his where it doesn’t affect said family in a bad way like Endeavor's does or even Captain Hero's in Vigilantes where he was having some martial problems. He's #1 Dad and husband in my book and I take no arguments on that. Also, anytime he talks I gotta to listen. Again, yes, voice actors, Yasuhiro Fujiwara and Gabe Kunda, love them. And his quirk, I actually love that quirk. It's a fun one.
Now for moments!!! Again, doing just three. And I'm sticking to just the anime here to avoid spoilers.
Ya'll already know I'm going to say the Miruko vs. High End Nomus fight. Out of all the fights in season 6, that is one of the best ones. Even leading up to her being Shigaraki's containment. I was actually surprised that made it on one of the recent Watchmojo anime videos for anime fights that caught the audience by surprise or something along those lines. Of course, not mad about it because oh my gosh, just watching her kick ass in a purple lit setting really just... I loved it so much.
I gotta bring up the dorm room episode here. It's one of the episodes I can rewatch and not get tired of it. There's so many funny moments in that episode and to be more specific my favorite scene is when they got to Tokoyami's room. From him trying to stop them from checking out his room, be overpowered because it was 2 to 1 and he is still fairly small (doesn't even have muscles until later) to the showcasing of the room. His room is my favorite. Gothic setting with black and purple lighting? Hell yes! I also love his "GEEEEET OOOOUT!" Don't blame him.
For the third one... hm... I have a lot of moments I like and I'll pick season 4 for this since not a whole of people talk about that season. And I'll choose... okay, when Eri finally smiled. That scene actually made me cry, did it. She's been through so much and all it took for her to smile was to see Midoriya on stage and have a fun time. Honestly, every time Eri smiles I want to or actually do cry. I did it in Mirio's flashback of his when she smiled at him in season 6. She's just so precious!
Now onto SK8 the Infinity! Starting with the characters which was hard to do because I do love them all as a whole.
Reki - he's literal sunshine who really has some great artistic skills. And out of all the characters, his design is my favorite out of everyone else's. I would wear his hoodies and I love how he wears many colors. He had a signature outfit, but he does change his clothes and his aesthetic is something I would wear. I am a sucker for colors and hoodies. Also, love hearing
Sketchy - Yes, that little pet is a favorite. He's just so freaking adorable??? Sassy little creature.
Nanako - Langa's mom is just so amazing. That woman really is just trying her best to be a good mom and you know she really does love her son and her late husband. She reminds me of Inko, Midoriya’s mom. Just a woman who has a kind heart and wants nothing but her son to be okay and safe.
And now for moments!!
The beach episode is overall is a favorite. I love that episode as a whole. It was a very funny episode... then episode 7 happened. I never thought the number 7 would betray me.
I really love that part where Reki and Langa were fixing skateboard, it's such a sweet moment.

Asahiko and the Three Voyagers
Once long ago in the distant land of Aomori, there was a prince named Tsuyomo Takeru. He was the son of the great Empress Tsuyomo Natsuko and her consort Lord-Prince Kujo Hachiro, and he was the handsomest and most noble lad in all the realms of the Chrysanthemum Ocean. All the princes and princesses and other royal heirs of these distant lands wanted to win his hand, but he kept to himself because he was waiting for his one true love to come along into his life, and none of the princes of Wancheng or Songnhieu or Pangaam or Sadhuvarta appealed to him in his heart. For he was looking for someone fairer still, more beautiful in soul than in body.
And so it was that Prince Takeru remained single and celibate until his seventeenth year, when he was riding along the roads of his future lands and saw a rather ugly man bathing naked in a river stream. The man was burly and large and covered in more scars than one would expect for a man of two-and-twenty. And initially, there was great mistrust between Prince Tsuyomo Takeru and the mysterious Samurai, the heart of the Crown Prince was changed immensely when the mysterious warrior slew six Tengu in a single battle to defend the little village of Kinoshita from the Tengu’s depredations. It was after this battle that the Ronin introduced himself as Kajiya Hiyoshi, and explained how he had been a Ronin ever since a group of Oni had killed his family when he was seven years old. Takeru and Hiyoshi fell in love very swiftly after that, and they returned unto Nijo, capital city of Aomori, and they were married four years later when Takeru was one-and-twenty and Hiyoshi was six-and-twenty. And two years later, cancer of the stomach took Empress Natsuko away from the mortal world, and Takeru was now Emperor of the realm of Aomori.
And yet, despite the love that they had for each other, Emperor Takeru and his husband Prince Hiyoshi were unable to conceive a child to succeed them upon the Lotus Throne. For many years, the two royal husbands tried desperately to have a child using every method that they knew from alchemy to sorcery and even unto consultations with the Great Divinities. Yet nothing worked for fourteen whole years until Prince Hiyoshi found a pair of mystical Azure Lotuses growing in the snows around Mount Sagarmatha and decided to bring both of them back to Nijo. The Emperor and his husband each ate one of the roses and became struck with love for each other as they gazed upon each other as if seeing each other for the first time ever. Without much hesitation, Takeru and Hiyoshi went into their Chrysanthemum Bedroom and stripped off every last inch of clothing till they were clad only in those clothes in which they were born. And then, with full passion emboldened by the power of the Azure Lotuses, the Emperor and the Shogun made love unto each other with the utmost vigour. And the Emperor’s womb was soon found to have grown, to put it moderately and mildly, very thick with child. And nine months later, a child was born who was neither male nor female, but rather possessed of both male and female organs and capable of becoming whatever gender they wanted to be. And because the child was born at the first light of dawn and filled his fathers’ lives with sunshine and love, they were named Asahiko, which is a strange name that combines the Aomori word for “Morning Sun” with the Aomori word for “Child”.
And once their child and heir was born, all of both high and low estate were summoned to give gifts and honours to the newborn heir to the throne of Aomori. In particular, there were six powerful witches who were invited to give gifts unto the child. The first Witch gave the gift of wisdom, the second Witch gave the gift of beauty, the third Witch gave the gift of strength, the fourth Witch gave the gift of leadership, and the fifth Witch gave the gift of song. However, just as the sixth and final Witch was about to give the gift of Magic, there was a storm in the courtyard and a swarm of spiders emerged from the walls of the palace and formed themselves into the Dread Queen Zarena, the Dark Sovereign of the Dreamless Realm. Zarena had discovered that the ancient contract whereby a child of House Tsuyomo would marry her son Prince Veratum was not to be honoured by Emperor Tsuyomo Takeru or by his husband Shogun Kajiya Hiyoshi. And as punishment, Zarena called down a curse upon Asahiko wherein the child would die of an enchanted snake bite to her left heel before the stroke of midnight at the end of their eighteenth birthday. The horrified Royal Guardians tried to bind Zarena and slay her with their mighty swords, but she struck them down, killing fifteen of the Royal Guardians and critically wounding another ten of them. However, the Sixth Witch offered a way out of Zarena’s curse by explaining how True Love could break open the walls of any curse and destroy even the Power of Death Herself.
However, Emperor Takeru and Shogun Hiyoshi were not taking any chances, and a campaign of war and violence was waged against all wild snakes who might threaten Asahiko’s life (However, this was somewhat foiled because many of Aomori’s denizens adopted non-venomous snakes as their own pets and cared for them as if they were dogs or birds or cats or rabbits). Furthermore, Asahiko themself was sent to live out in the woods in the company of an old carpenter named Takeshi and his two daughters Asuka and Kaede.
Many sad and lonely years passed by for the Emperor, the Shogun, and their people, with their only comfort being rumours of Zarena’s continued wrath and frustration. And meanwhile, Asahiko grew into a happy and cheerful but also very wise and considerate child who loved all the living creatures made by the gods and had a particular affinity for foxes. Asahiko would often go for long walks in the woods around her village (much to her adoptive father Takeshi’s intense consternation and disgust). And one day when she was hunting with her sisters in the woods, Asahiko struck down a deer with his bow and then he and Asuka and Kaede brought it home to their shared father’s cottage. However, little did they know that they were being watched by none other than Prince Veratum son of Zarena, who had been ordered by his mother Queen Zarena and his father Prince Tamuzuud to kill Asahiko once and for all so that the curse could be fulfilled. However, Prince Veratum saw no point in pursuing this ancient and ridiculous feud, and so he deliberately mistimed all three of his arrows and sent them flying off into the ethereal blue sky above the forest. Unfortunately for him, Zarena and Tamuzuud found out about what they saw as their son’s “treason” and they struck him down with furious fire, reducing him into ash and cinders with a stroke of Zarena’s right hand. And then, with that having been done, Zarena transformed her husband into a vermillion cobra and sent him to attack Asahiko in her home, ordering him to bring them down before the stroke of midnight at the end of Asahiko’s eighteenth birthday.
And so it was that Tamuzuud the Serpent stalked Asahiko and Asuka and Kaede on their way back to their cottage. And then he lunged upon them at the start of the day’s last hour. At the third minute of the last hour, he killed Takeshi the Carpenter and Himiko the Fisherwoman with a single bite on Himiko’s left hand and Takeshi’s right hand. Then at the halfway point between the fifth and the sixth minute, he bit Asahiko upon the throat. In a state of horror and disgust, Asuka set the wicked serpent on fire while Kaede pumped him full of one-and-twenty arrows, killing Tamuzuud at last. Unfortunately, Asahiko seemed as if she was dead.
Asuka and Kaede rushed their beloved sibling to the city of Nijo in search of a healer, only to be intercepted by Emperor Takeru and Prince Hiyoshi on the way. The grieving rulers of the land recognised their daughter and finally explained the truth unto the sisters. Asahiko’s wounded body was placed to rest in a secret bedroom where none could find or disturb it, and though the councillors of the realm begged the Emperor and his husband the Shogun not to waste much time on their daughter’s life, Takeru and Hiyoshi called upon the Sixth Witch to cast a spell upon them and their entire court so that they would sleep in exalted beauty and wonder for as long as it took for their child to awaken at last. Before that, however, Emperor Takeru trusted his sword and mirror and necklace of sacred beads to the Minister of the Treasury, the High Treasurer Hanayama Miyako, crowning her as the new Empress of Aomori. And as the Spell of Deepest Sleep was cast over all of Nijo, Empress Miyako and her court travelled on their horses and in their carriages to the city of Hirano, now the seat of government and power in the Realm of Aomori.
One-hundred-and-thirty-five years then passed as the Hanayama Clan continued to rule over the lands once ruled by Clan Tsuyomo. And in that time, the land still flourished and entered into a golden age of art and commerce, particularly with Samtang and Songnhieu and Wancheng. Hanayama Miyako was ruler of the land for eight-and-fifty years before she passed on to the Next World and left the throne to her eldest daughter Hanayama Masako. And Hanayama Masako was Empress of the land for six-and-twenty years and three months and fourteen days before she passed on and left the throne to her eldest scion Tsuneyo. And Hanayama Tsuneyo was sovereign of Aomori for twelve years and six months and sixteen days before they themself died of weariness and premature aging because of cancer of the heart and passed their throne unto their eldest scion Hanayama Daisuke, who ruled over the lands of Aomori for sixteen years and five months and seventeen days. And the last of the Hanayama lineage to reign as sovereign over the realm of Aomori was Daisuke’s eldest son Emperor Hanayama Yasuhiro, who reigned over these lands for twenty-three years and seven months and twelve days.
And in this age of the Hanayama Dynasty, the Old City of Nijo became a site of great pilgrimage and holy reverence for the people of all the lands around the Chrysanthemum Ocean. From Samtang to Oiliath, many princes came to try their hands at waking the beautiful scion of the Tsuyomo lineage. However, none of them could pull it off, for the curse remained strong and powerful over the beautiful Asahiko. And so the curse remained strong, and Asuka and Kaede became more and more desperate to awake their fallen sibling, turning to ancient books of lore and occult mystery in an attempt to wake the Prince/Princess. It was only in the 135th Year of the Hanayama Monarchy that Kaede of the Spear discovered the truth of how to find a wise Jinn named Shamhurasha who could give them the solution to destroying the curse that held their beloved realm and sibling hostage. And so with her sister Asuka of the Sword and Kazuhiko of the Bow (only scion and heir to Emperor Hanayama Yasuhiro), Kaede of the Spear set off for Hirano and crossed the ship in a boat that took them to Samtang.
Then did the Three Voyagers cross many lands and nations until they found the castle of Shamhurasha and her wife the Sixth Witch in the wild and mountainous lands of what is now Solvatia. And it was here that the Sixth Witch revealed unto the Three Voyagers that only The Truest Love of All could defeat the Power of Zarena’s Curse. Disappointed and left uncertain because of the Sixth Witch’s words, the Three Voyagers passed through Jylqyzan and Wancheng until they departed from Pan Yu and returned to Nijo.
However, midway through their voyage home, the Three Voyagers were attacked by a Leviathan sent by the wicked Shemala Olomunkatil to punish the Voyagers for interfering with the schemes of her lifelong ally Zarena. For a long while, Kazuhiko and Kaede saw no reason to fight onwards against the Leviathan now that their quest to save Asahiko and the rest of Clan Tsuyomo had seemingly failed, but Asuka of the Sword refused to give up or give in to the darkness surrounding her, and so she lured the Leviathan up to the mast of the great ship on which they had stowed away and leapt from the top of the mast and sliced her way down the Leviathan’s neck, killing it swiftly and spreading its blood all throughout the sea. Unfortunately, the ship itself was sent crashing to the shores of Hongdao and there was no way to get back on the open ocean. So Prince Kazuhiko went to a tavern in the city of Anping and asked for a vehicle of transportation to take them home to Aomori. The old fisherman Jin Huan told them of a Phoenix who lived up on the Mountain Called Honghui. Her name was Ehuang and she could fly around the whole entire world in forty-five minutes. And so on the Fisherman’s suggestion, the Three Voyagers all ascended the Mountain Called Honghui and met Ehuang at its peak. Sadly, she was wounded gravely and could not fly, for there was a jewelled spear embedded in her left claw. Kazuhiko, being a virtuous prince, took pity on the Phoenix and used their powers of healing to remove the Jewelled Spear from the Phoenix’s Claw and they were amazed to discover that it was the same Jewelled Spear with which Tsukura and Eienoto were said to have raised all the islands of the Chrysanthemum Ocean, Aomori most of all. And with the Jewelled Spear, Kazuhiko healed Queen Ehuang’s wounds and in gratitude, the Phoenix Queen lifted all three of the Voyagers up onto her back and flew them to the vicinity of Nijo.
Unfortunately, the Queen of Phoenixes was spotted by a group of Oni (Thirteen all in all) as she flew above the outskirts of Nijo, and they were able to shoot her down with a giant crossbow through the groin. The Oni then took the whole group captive and decided to have Ehuang cut up and eaten for dinner while the Three Voyagers would be returned unto Hirano for a hefty ransom. However, Kaede of the Spear was by fortunate chance a lover of riddles and so was Akatsuno King of the Thirteen Oni. So Kaede decided to sit down with King Akatsuno to do riddles and debate philosophy over the course of dinner. And within an hour and a half, Akatsuno decided to release Ehuang from her bonds and captivity and allowed Kazuhiko and Asuka and Kaede to travel onwards into Nijo.
Soon enough did the Three Voyagers reach the Chamber of the Leaping Deer in which Asahiko was asleep and poured some of the Leviathan’s Blood and Ehuang’s Four Feathers into the drinking horn that King Akatsuno had given unto them and put the mixture unto Asahiko’s lips. And because this drink was laced with all the love that had driven the Three Voyagers to journey across the world and slay Shemala’s pet Leviathan and give succour and healing unto Queen Ehuang and give friendship and companionship and amity unto King Akatsuno to save their friend, it succeeded in breaking Zarena’s curse and Asahiko was finally awakened from her enchanted sleep. And then once he was awakened, all of the courtiers and royal family members around Asahiko also awakened from their sleep and dreams. And then at last were Emperor Takeru and Prince-Shogun Hiyoshi reunited with their beloved scion, and there was much love and rejoicing all around.
Unfortunately, Zarena was soon made wholly aware of what had become of her once fearsome and terrible curse, and she turned into a sphere of purple fire and flew like a meteor unto Nijo’s beautiful harbour. In her state of endless ire and intense rage, Zarena dove into the sea as a ball of crimson fire and emerged as a great and terrible Sea Cobra whose head was all enshrouded in a hurricane of orange fire. And with this new and powerful form, Zarena unleashed a storm of raging fire and fiery winds upon the city of Nijo, laying waste to all in her path as she bit towards the Palace of Clan Tsuyomo.
However, little did she know that there was in fact an unintended side effect to all of her machinations. For because she had imbued some of her own magic into Tamuzuud’s cobra form so that he could carry out her will and destroy Asahiko once and for all, some of the magic (or rather, almost all of the magic she had given unto her husband’s serpent form) had leaked into Asahiko’s veins and bloodstream, giving them large amounts of Zarena’s fearsome power. And during Asahiko’s thirteen-and-a-half decades of endless sleep, he had learned to walk in the Realm of Dreams and had seen much of the world during this time of endless rest, including learning how to survive in Zarena’s Dreamless Realm. As a result, he made the decision to take up the Jewelled Spear and enter the Dreamless Realm to confront the terrible Zarena. And there a fight began between Asahiko and Zarena, which ended when Asahiko finally drove the Jewelled Spear straight through Zarena’s heart, causing her to be torn apart by Light from the inside before shattering apart and exploding into shards of diamond crystal.
Upon finally returning to the Mortal Realm, Tsuyomo Asahiko and Hanayama Kazuhiko married each other in a forest temple as Kazuhiko’s father Yasuhiro and his mother Matsudaira Eiko relinquished their crown and relics unto Emperor Takeru, who promptly reassumed the throne alongside his husband and reigned for another forty-six years before finally passing away at the biological age of three-and-eighty three years before his husband came to join him. And with his death, Asahiko became the new Sovereign of the land of Aomori and sat on the throne with Kazuhiko for six-and-seventy years and five months and thirteen days. During their time on the throne, Kazuhiko and Asahiko had two twin children, Mitsuru the Wisest of Priests and Kantaro the Great Warrior. Tsuyomo Mitsuru resigned their rights to the Lotus Throne and became a great philosopher-priest watching over a high mountain temple dedicated to the God of the Moon. However, Tsuyomo Kantaro remained in the Palace and trained to become the great ruler he was always meant to be.
All the while though, there was the bittersweet knowledge that Asahiko was now immortal and would never age like her family, and he was forced to live forever and be eternally young and beautiful as his family grew old and tired around him. And on the fourth day of the eighth month of the seventy-sixth year of Asahiko’s reign, Kazuhiko finally passed away in his sleep from pneumonia and Asahiko knew it was time to resign the Lotus Throne. Eight days later, Prince Kantaro became the new Emperor of the Land of Aomori as his Womb Parent walked out to the harbour to find a boat to take them to new and distant lands. Kantaro of course reigned wisely and well for two-and-twenty years and eight months and eleven days before passing on and leaving the throne unto his son Tsuyomo Shigeru, who ruled for thirty-eight years and six months and thirteen days…yet Asahiko themself is still alive in the world, travelling all of Tellus having adventures and searching for the meaning of all existence in all the lands of humankind. May they indeed one day find it.

Relationship: Family & Friends - Yuuya Kanata
Tumblr media
Tumblr media
Enchu Kanata (夏向 炎昼) † - Yuuya’s deceased biological father whom he cherishes so dearly. Going by the artist name “Natsumeku”, he was sung praises by fellow artists to be a god-tier composer who absolutely knows how to turn every piece of music into the heartfelt masterpiece. He has a friendly nature and worked in the entertainment industry for quite a time so he had built a variety of connections here and there, but very few knew that he also had a small band “Σummer sign” with a studio under the same name. Whilst being a cordial man at his core, he still got a divorce from his wife. After that, he strived to raise his son all on his own and that somehow sparked Yuuya’s interest into the world of melodies. Sadly, one day he was found dead after a fire broke out at his studio. The incident is identified as an accident, but is there anything deeper than that?
Tumblr media
Mayonaka ███████ (まよなか, 49 Years Old) - Yuuya’s biological mother who he desperately craved for her affection. A cold beauty whose expression always appears as stern and difficult to read, her husband used to be the only one that was able to get beyond her hard shell until she divorced him because of their disagreement on something. She also once worked as a journalist for Koyo TV news. From Yuuya’s childhood, she seemed to always ignore him for some unclear reason. The last thing he knows about her is that she has moved into the territory under Chuohku, taking his older sister along.

Tachi Kinoshita (太刀 木下, 21 Years Old) - Yuuya’s graduated senior who is now studying up north at the University in Sendai to become a P.E. teacher. As a jovial athlete who harbors a zeal for music, he used to be the president of the club Yuuya is joining and also the one who taught him how to perfect his guitar skills. Furthermore, he is a diehard fan of several music bands, including 86 and even the now disbanded Σummer sign. Both of them still keep in contact and message each other from time to time.
Tumblr media
Ojou-chan (approximately less than 1 year) - Yuuya’s new roommate and the special guest of Ajisai Residence. She is a petite Siamese kitten discovered in the mysterious package delivered to Saigo’s place. Noticing the collar around her neck, Yuuya thinks there might be somebody waiting for her return and eventually makes up his mind to find that person for her. She loves exploring but always hisses at strangers and won’t let most people touch her, she has soon grown to be quite attached to him though. Sometimes he just gets an odd chill that maybe she can sense something humans can’t.
████████ ███████ (29 Years Old) - The younger cousin of Yuuya’s biological mother. Notoriously known far and wide as the monstrous woman in the Party of Words who not even pays respect towards her superior e.g. Otome and Ichijiku, she has a peculiar thrill in crushing things people hold dear to them. Putting that aside, the Party of Words has granted her a special unit for the sake of her matchless rapping skills. It’s only a matter of time before she could get a glimpse of her new toy adorable cousin…

Ken Uehara and Kinuyo Tanaka in Yotsuya Kaidan (Keisuke Kinoshita, 1949) Cast: Kinuyo Tanaka, Ken Uehara, Osamu Takizawa, Keiji Sada, Hisako Yamane, Jukichi Uno, Aizo Tamashima, Choko Iida. Screenplay: Eijiro Hisaita, Masaki Kobayashi, based on a play by Nanboku Tsuruya. Cinematography: Hiroshi Kusuda. Production design: Isamu Motoki. Yotsuya Kaidan is one of the most famous Japanese ghost stories, put in classic form in the kabuki drama written by Nanboku Tsuruya in 1825. But in adapting the tale of a ronin, a masterless samurai, pursued by the vengeful phantom of the wife he murdered, Keisuke Kinoshita and his screenwriters, Eijiro Hisaita and the uncredited Masaki Kobayashi, jettisoned the supernatural elements to turn it into a psychological drama with overtones of Shakespeare tragedy: the ambition of Macbeth and the jealousy of Othello, abetted by an Iago-like villain. The ronin of Kinoshita's film, Iemon Tamiya (Ken Uehara), was dismissed by his former master for failing to guard the storehouse from a thief; he now ekes out a living with his wife, Oiwa (Kinuyo Tanaka), making and selling umbrellas. But while drowning his sorrows in sake one evening, he is approached by Naosuke (Osamu Takizawa), who plants in him the idea of wooing the wealthy Oume (Hisako Yamane), whose father has the connections that would enable him to find a master and restore his status as a samurai. Naosuke also plots with Kohei (Keiji Sada), with whom he served some jail time, to woo Oiwa, with whom Kohei has been infatuated since the days when she worked in a teahouse. Kohei's attentions to Oiwa arouse Iemon's jealousy, which Naosuke plays upon. As the prospect of marrying Oume becomes more likely, Iemon is given a poison to use on Oiwa, but he's initially reluctant to go that far. When Oiwa accidentally scalds her face, producing a horrible disfigurement, Naosuke provides an "ointment" that puts her in terrible pain and Iemon administers the poison. In the turmoil that follows Oiwa's death, Naosuke also kills Kohei. Freed to marry Oume, Iemon finds himself tormented by a guilty conscience, and when he learns that Naosuke was the one who robbed the storehouse that led to Iemon's dismissal by his former master, he turns on the conspirator. A fiery conclusion results. Kinoshita released the film in two parts, the first running for 85 minutes, the second for 73 minutes. Part I is more tightly controlled, efficiently introducing its characters -- there are lots of secondary ones, including Oiwa's sister, Osode (also played by Tanaka), and her husband, Yomoshichi (Jukichi Uno), who provide a kind of grounding in normal life. Kinoshita is not as successful at marshaling all of the secondary plots in Part II, and I tend to blame the director's tendency to sentimentalize, including the search of Kohei's mother for her son, for the weaknesses in the later parts of the film. But he gives his characters depth -- there is more sympathy for Iemon in the film than in more traditional versions of the story, which has been filmed many times.

One door closes, another one opens - Kinoshita Hisashi x reader
Kinoshita is described as the main pillar of Karasuno's cheering squad - so here comes my ode to this sweet bean!
Tumblr media
You’re in the middle of scrubbing the bottom of your largest pot when the door clicks shut.
You turn immediately, just in time to catch Hisashi poking his face around the corner.
He’s still wearing his new uniform and ever since you’ve told him that he looks smoking hot in it he’s gotten a little shy when wearing it around the house.
“Come on,” you tell him, voice barely above a whisper, “Don’t hide.”
“It’s your fault!” He whispers back. “You’re making me feel self-conscious.”
“I’ve seen you naked!” You remind him and his face erupts in pretty shades of pink and red as he groans.
Just two months ago the train company redesigned its uniforms. Hisashi has been suffering ever since.
-
You close the door as quietly as you can. But Hisashi still wakes, blinking up at you with bleary eyes.
“You need to rest,” you remind him as sternly as you can. He looks like he’s gotten hit by a bus and you doubt the cup of soup in your hands will do much help.
“I’m so sorry,” he whines, “I didn’t know the oysters weren’t fresh.”
“You couldn’t know,” you try to soothe him but he’s inconsolable. You take a seat next to him, pulling his head into your lap. His hair is soft beneath your fingertips.
“Worst honeymoon you’ve ever been on,” he groans miserably.
You can’t help but snort.
“Only honeymoon I’ve ever been on.”
“So far.”
Now you’re laughing, can’t help it. “Are you already divorcing me, ‘sashi? Over diarrhea?”
“I wanted this to be special.”
“And it will be. You just need to rest first.”
-
The door is wide open. You lean against the doorframe, exhaustion leaving you a little slumped.
“You’re disgusting,” Hisashi singsongs, face scrunched up at the smell, “Are you really related to me?”
“Well, I do remember our honeymoon-” You interject, only to watch him swivel around with a look of betrayal on his face. “Babe!” He moans, “Not in front of Atsuko!”
You giggle. Your daughter gurgles, possibly trying to recreate the sound. Or she’s preparing for the new diaper, who knows?
As soon as she’s clean, her chubby little feet thrashing around, he lifts her up and brings her over.
“Stinky,” Hisashi calls Atsuko affectionately, dropping a kiss on the crown of her head. “Like your mom.”
-
The door slams shut. You flinch.
“Shit, I’m sorry.” Hisashi slips out of his coat, water dripping. “It’s madness out there.”
You rush to his side, hugging him despite the wetness now seeping into your own clothes.
“I’m glad you’re safe,” you whisper into his neck as you hug him tight, “You shouldn’t drive when the weather’s like this.”
“Couldn’t stay away either,” he argues softly, “Did Atsuko fall asleep?”
“Barely,” you start but break off when thunder roars outside. You shiver at the sound. When it subsides, your ears pick up a low whimper.
“Atsuko-” Hisashi nods, is at the doors in seconds. You follow him down the hallway.
“Hey Baby,” he slips into his daughter's room, “Daddy’s here.”
It’s not surprising that Atsuko falls asleep in his arms. There’s no safer place in this world.
Not for you, not for her.
-
A knock on the door alerts you.
You put your book away and shuffle over, peaking through the door viewer. Narita’s grinning back at you.
“Hey?” You open the door, surprised to see your husband missing, “Where’s Hisashi?”
“He fell asleep in the car. Can you help me get him up?”
“Sure,” you slip your shoes on, “How much did he drink?”
“Not that much. But I guess he’s been a bit more tired this past week?”
“He did pick up a few extra shifts,” you agree, not yet ready to reveal the reason for them, “How’s Kame and the dogs?”
“Kame’s great,” Narita grins, “And the dogs are rowdy as ever. We’re thinking about adopting a third one. Or a cat. But we haven’t decided yet.”
“Adopting a cat will make you Atsuko’s favorite Uncle,” you tease, stopping at Narita’s car. Hisashi is snoring on the passenger seat, head snuggled against the seatbelt. You open the door and lean close, nudge his nose with yours. “Baby, wake up.”
He groans but doesn’t open his eyes.
“Atsuko’s crying,” you tell him, “There’s a monster under her bed.”
His eyes flicker open. “Wha-?” He asks, voice rough with sleep.
“Come on,” you unlock the seatbelt and pull him into you, “Let’s go up and get to bed.”
“Hm,” he leans into you, too heavy to hold him on your own, but Narita’s already at your side.
“What about Atsuko?” Hisashi’s words are more slurred than spoken, but his worry is audible.
“You want to check in on her first?”
He nods and you roll your eyes affectionately as if you didn’t know him already.
-
“Why is mommy throwing up?” Atsuko asks, her voice muffled through the bathroom door.
“That’s what happens sometimes when you’re pregnant,” Hisashi explains, “Your little brother or sister is making her body all confused. Do you want to make tea? That helps.”
“Yeah,” she crows and you can hear the pitter-patter of her feat when the door opens.
“Babe?” Hisashi’s leaning in. From where you’re hugging the toilet you can see the cardigan he’s wearing and the disheveled state of his hair. “Do you want me to go and get medicine? Or come in and rub your back?”
“Can you tell me a story?” You ask, exhausted from the morning sickness. It wasn’t nearly that bad with Atsuko.
“Course, what story do you want to hear?”
“Something about Karasuno,” you close your eyes, hoping to ward off the next wave of nausea. “I like those stories.”
He clears his throat and for a moment there’s only silence filling the room.
“In my second year, I got to play against Inarizaki in the nationals… I got sent in a few times, I mean, I was just a pinch server, but I was hoping… I was hoping to get a moment… of being heroic, you know?”
“Yeah.”
“And I didn’t. And I felt… like I was being left behind. Like I was the only one being less than average.”
Silence fills the air. It’s heavy, but not sad. Vulnerable, but not defeated.
“I don’t think I was a great Pinch Sever. I wasn’t bad, but I think they could have done without me on court just as well. I liked being part of the cheering squad. To trust in my teammates, to make sure they knew I believed in them. I liked that a lot.”
“You’re my cheering squad.”
Hisashi laughs.
“You’re my cheering squad,” he argues.
“Maybe we’re each other’s cheering squad,” you find a compromise. The pitter-patter returns.
“I made you tea, Mommy!” Atsuko exclaims and squeezes her small body through the gap in the door. You smile at her eagerness to help and to care. You know where she got that from.
She’s part of the cheering squad.
My Kofi if you want to tip me

Recently Viewed: Kenji Misumi’s Yotsuya Kaidan (1959)
[The following review contains MAJOR SPOILERS; YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED!]
Yotsuya Kaidan is Japan’s most popular and frequently adapted ghost story. While the core premise is basically consistent from version to version—penniless ronin Tamiya Iemon falsely accuses his wife of adultery as a pretext to divorce her and marry a wealthier woman, culminating in violence, regret, and vengeance from beyond the grave—the precise details of the narrative vary wildly between cinematic interpretations.
Tumblr media
Shintoho’s 1959 film (helmed by Jigoku director Nobuo Nakagawa), for example, is a relentlessly dark (albeit vibrantly colorful) and bleakly cynical morality play; the protagonist is casually cruel and unrepentantly vile, with his grisly fate framed as karmic justice that the audience is intended to enthusiastically applaud. Keisuke Kinoshita’s 1949 duology, on the other hand, depicts Tamiya far more sympathetically; despite his (thoroughly reluctant) complicity in the terrible crimes committed against his spouse, he’s motivated primarily by economic factors beyond his control and the corruptive influence of his slimy, manipulative, verminous “friend,” Naosuke. Indeed, it is implied that the “haunting” is merely psychological—a subconscious manifestation of the central character’s guilty conscience. (Ironically, this “social realism” makes Kinoshita’s movie feel more subversive and revolutionary than Nakagawa’s comparatively lurid and gory effort.)
Kenji Misumi’s radically revisionist spin on the classic tale, however, probably takes the most liberties with the surprisingly malleable source material. Here, Tamiya (played by megastar Kazuo Hasegawa—which goes a long way towards explaining the particular “quirks” in his portrayal) is borderline heroic—an archetypal gruff-yet-chivalrous swordsman cut from the same cloth as Zatoichi and Tange Sazen. He’s also so passive and devoid of agency that he resembles the eponymous “specter” in Hammer’s The Phantom of the Opera, remaining virtually blameless for the (unnecessarily convoluted) series of events that result in his tragic downfall. He’s totally unaware of Naosuke’s devious conspiracy to humiliate, defame, and ultimately murder his wife, and although he still participates in an extramarital affair, the relationship appears to be purely transactional (and may not be overtly sexual; the extent of the “lovers’” physical intimacy is left deliberately ambiguous)—driven to desperation by poverty, he only indulges his mistress’ affections in exchange for money and lavish gifts. The editing, in fact, at one point explicitly juxtaposes his infidelity with that of his sister-in-law, who works part-time as a “waitress” at a “bathhouse” in order to supplement her husband’s meager income. Naturally, Tamiya’s relative “innocence” completely recontextualizes the story’s climax and denouement; whereas the character usually suffers an appropriately shameful, pathetic, undignified demise, Misumi allows him to achieve a measure of redemption via his glorious, honorable, beautiful death—sprawled at the feet of a bronze Buddha statue, wrapped in his wife’s favorite kimono, bathed in heavenly sunlight.
Tumblr media
Pulpy, unsubtle, and unapologetically melodramatic even by Daiei’s standards, Yotsuya Kaidan isn’t the “best” adaptation of the original kabuki production, but Misumi’s various audacious departures from the “traditional” formula certainly distinguish it as one of the most interesting, unique, and undeniably compelling. For fans of chanbara and J-horror alike, it is essential viewing.
