VIFF 2023 Review: Lynx Man (Ilveskuiskaaja)
Finnish hermit Hannu and his fascination with the endangered Eurasian lynx is the subject of the documentary Lynx Man. The documentary Lynx Man showcases a man who you’d first think to be an eccentric. Over time, you’ll see his work is less of a hobby and more of a mission. The film begins with an old Finnish man finding a dead Eurasian lynx near the street. He picks it up and takes it with…

Comic-con Tom is back!
Quick recap: Tom showed up in a fit we've seen before cuz that's just who he is (and I respect that). Host was giving kind of a weird energy ('she's asking if you'd like to be punished'???), but okay, no harm done and we don't have to shit on random dudes.
He got asked some of the same questions from earlier cons and some new ones. In summary: Sandman s2 is halfway through filming, the helmet is real and you can see through the eyes, eternal waking is a worse punishment than eternal sleeping, he loved doing Sea Wall, he likes dark Belgian chocolate, he got into acting through Punk Rock, his main inspiration in portraying Dream was the the novels (rather than something external to them), a fav scene to act was the dinner table scene with all siblings in upcoming s2, he'd like to be Destiny so he can live alone in a garden and read, main characteristic of s1 Dream was Dream finding his connection to humanity, fav line is I Am Hope, he's excited to watch Dead Boy Detectives, embodying Dream had its challenges, little to no CGI was used in creating the other versions of Morpheus (iykyk), he tried meeting Morpheus in his dreams, working with Neil was wonderful, he wants to work with great creators (people 'cleverer than him' as he always puts it), he's done a lot of dark roles and if it's happening this many times, he guesses there must be a kinship between those and his personal self (mmhmmm?), for filming he wakes up/starts for the studio around 4 a.m. and starts giving shots around 9 a.m.- time between that is hair+makeup and getting into character, and last and definitely the least, he got asked to do the Dream voice yet AGAIN (please don't do this, people).
It was really, really good to see him. Watch the full video at Klara Himmel's channel.

i don't want to run ahead, but i was curious how other girls of venus are feeling in this timeline. are they soloists as well? are they in other groups and labels? i know that they're not your main focus here, but i still wanted to ask. i apologise for the irrelevant question! :(
Dthis is a very fun question! thank you, nonnie! I'll give you a run down of what every venus member is doing in this alt timeline since that seems so much fun!
CHLOE LEE would stay under Pledis and compete on the first season of PRODUCE 101, ranking first in the finale. She would debut as the center of I.O.I and become Korea's sweetheart virtually overnight. Once I.O.I's promotions ended, she would debut as the center of Pledis' second girl group, Pristin.
We all know how that ended.
With Pristin's disbandment, Chloe left Pledis Entertainment and signed an exclusive contract with Source Entertainment in 2019. She would debut as their first soloist in 2020 with the song "POP!" which would skyrocket her to fame. Besides being adored for her music, Chloe is also a treasured actress, having acted in several dramas and films.
Chloe and Baebi don't have much of a personal relationship but a very strong business one. They are the it girls of Korea, and putting them on the same stage is easy money.
You can follow Chloe at @sourchloe !
SENA KIM was destined for greatness. One of the seven female trainees at BigHit Entertainment, she was slated to debut in a girl group that never came to fruition in 2018. While the other girls were moved to Source Music to continue their training, Sena would be kept at BigHit and begin training with the potential members of BigHit's new boy group, TXT.
To everyone's surprise, she made the final lineup and debuted as their single female member in 2019. Her debut was met with instant backlash, lots of it, but Sena and Bigghit were persistent in her presence in her group.
"I'm as much a member as the boys are," Sena said during a group livestream shortly after their first comeback. I love being a member of TXT, and I'm not going anywhere, so...Get over it."
Over the years Sena has cemented herself as an it girl and stan twitter's favorite punching bag. Despite this, she's become one of the industry's most talked about and known idols.
Sena and Baebi have a close personal relationship often calling each other 'sisters' and posting each other on their social medias.
You can follow Sena at @txtsena !
Klara Blix has been a trainee at SM Entertainment for what feels like an endless five years. She didn't have "the look" for Aespa, her alleged NCT unit fell through, and every plan for a girl group gets shelved or canceled. She feels like a permanent SM Rookie until the downfall of NCT Universe. With angry NCTzens and falling SM stocks, everything changes. Sungchan and Shotaro are suddenly removed from NCT, causing even more uproar. Realizing they need to make a bold move to save their company, SM decides on something daring and unprecedented - Klara's debut in their new group, RIIZE.
She made her debut as RIIZE's MAIN VOCALIST and LEAD RAPPER. Her outgoing and lively nature makes it difficult to determine who she is closest with, as she is often seen spending time and playing around with all the members, earning her the title of the "FAKE MAKNAE."
Klara seamlessly integrated herself into RIIZE. In fact, her presence as the only female member of the group was so natural that hardly anyone remarked on it. BRIIZE greatly appreciates her, especially for being the most outspoken OT7 member and gaining popularity for her English vlogs on TikTok. Klara is an up-and-coming IT GIRL, adored by fans for her charming personality and refreshing visuals.
You can follow Klara at @talklara !

Hello Neil! Today again I read about the casting process of The Sandman’s Lord of Dream and that the most convincing reason to choose Tom in the end was his voice and the way he delivered the lines so intensely perfect. I was wondering if you know about the the dubbing voice in other countries and if you had any influence on that. That’s because, and I am sorry for the dubbing actor in THIS special case, I highly criticize the voice of Morpheus in German. It is the complete opposite of Tom’s tone and rhythm. Honestly, I couldn’t stand it for more than 2 episodes and nearly gave up. Fortunately my husband convinced me to watch The Sandman in the original language and BOOM - I was hooked and since then I am a huge fan of The Sandman, the comics and it let me to dive into your awesome worlds. So, sounds and voices are so immensely important. I know not everyone is able to watch movies in OT but I wish everyone could enjoy this masterpieces as authentic as possible. Hopefully you can get this as a well-intentioned feedback and tell us if there are in fact possibilities for writers or directors to take care of the dubbing of their screen / film adaptions. Thank you for enriching my little world. Best regards! Klara
I'm afraid we don't have any say in the casting or dubbing of foreign voices. We just have to hope.

Taika Waititi's tenure with the #Thor franchise continues to split opinion among #Marvel fans.
Reflecting on the backlash he faced when he was announced as the director of #ThorRagnarok, #TaikaWaititi remarked, "Fans said, 'He's gonna ruin Thor!' I responded, 'You don't know what you want until I give it to you.'" While Ragnarok and its sequel, Thor: Love and Thunder, were financially successful, they received mixed reviews and criticism for their tone and departure from the earlier films.
With Waititi not returning for a potential Thor 5, some fans may feel justified in their skepticism. He is now focusing on other projects, including an adaptation of Klara and the Sun.

Day One of CinemaCon is in the can.
What wares did Sony bring to the proverbial tent?
-The long-threatened four picture "cinematic event" that is the Sam Mendes' films about the members of The Beatles.
Four films too many, if you ask me. Hitting the theaters April 2028 (please let Sir Paul McCartney and Sir Ringo Starr still be around).

-A double dose of Spider-Man (Spider-Men?).

SPIDER-MAN: BEYOND THE SPIDERVERSE swinging to theaters on June 4, 2027.

-Nia DaCosta and Danny Boyle were on hand to talk 28 YEARS LATER: THE BONE TEMPLE. Boyle confirms Cillian Murphy's return to the film series, but just not yet as he is still seeking funding for a third film.
I'm satisfied with Aaron Taylor-Johnson.

-Footage from KARATE KID: LEGENDS with Jackie Chan reprising his role as Mr. Han from the 2010 KARATE KID and forever Daniel LaRusso, Ralph Macchio reprising his role from the films and the just-ended series COBRA KAI and newcomer Ben Wang.

-Favourable response to teaser footage from the follow-up to I KNOW WHAT YOU DID LAST SUMMER featuring Jennifer Love Hewitt and Freddie Prinze Jr. reprising their roles.
-Audiences were treated to the trailer of A BIG, BOLD, BEAUTIFUL JOURNEY starring Margot Robbie and Colin Farrell; who reunites with his AFTER YANG director Kogonada for the film which is described as, "...an original tale of two strangers and the extraordinary emotional journey that connects them."
-Zach Cregger teased his plans for RESIDENT EVIL; saying his film "will focus on one central protagonist going on a point A to B journey, slowly falling more into hellish territory."
-GODZILLA MINUS ONE director Takashi Yamazaki will bring his first English language film to Sony: GRANDGEAR.
-Word that Neill Blomkamp's STARSHIP TROOPERS will be based on the novel and not the camp classic film. In other words; expect a tonal difference.
-You didn't ask for another JUMANJI? Too damn bad, cos you're getting one. JUMANJI 3 rolling the dice in theaters in December 2026.
-Trailer for Darren Aronofsky's CAUGHT STEALING starring Austin Butler, Zoe Kravitz, Matt Smith, Bad Bunny and Liev Schreiber was shown.

-Other projects bandied about: the live-action LEGEND OF ZELDA releasing on March 26, 2027; Nate Bargatze's comedy THE BREADWINNER and Taika Waititi's KLARA AND THE SUN.

i'm more than happy to fuel your metas about Anora, I'll probably send you a couple lol.
Something I loved about the 'romance' in the 1st act was you can kind of tell it's not gonna end well but you also completely get how Ani got swept up it. Vanya's charming, rich and her age, unlike the other men at the club. His boyishness is charming when it's fun. And while Ani doesn't seem to hate her job, it's a minimum wage service job with shitty hours and no health insurance, of course she leaps at the chance to escape that.
And there's great moments of her brushing over some red flags with his immaturity, him ignoring her during and after sex etc. And when he's shit to service people she looks uncomfortable but brushes it aside because she wants to believe she's not 'one of them' anymore, and of course thats not the case
Seriously, send me anything — I love talking about this movie!
You're totally right: the little warning signs with Vanya were definitely there, but like Ani we get so caught up in the whirlwind of it all that they get brushed aside. Part of it, I think, is that from the very beginning we can see how hard this girl is working (not just physically from the dancing, but mentally and emotionally) and we're rooting for her to finally get a break. One of the brilliant things the film does from the onset is establish Ani's pure hustle — “Hi, I'm Ani,” “Let's go to the ATM and get you some cash,” “You want to go to VIP, maybe?” — but how charming and effortless she makes all that striving appear. It must be so exhausting; no wonder she falls asleep on the subway coming back at night.
And you nailed it on Vanya: he's not old or gross and he compliments her on things that aren't just her body. With him it was probably much easier for Ani to do her job, but she never forgets that it's a job and that the transaction is based on her performance, be it flirty conversation or companionship or lap dances or sex. (I think part of Vanya wants to pretend it's not quite so transactional, the way he invites her to his New Year's Eve party like he might with a friend or asks her to “be [his] horny girlfriend for the week,” but Ani's under no illusions with her “holiday rates” and demands for cash up front.) But, yeah, he is charming in his boyishness and enthusiasm, and I think it's a testament to Mark Eydelshteyn's performance that — in the first act of the movie, at least — his wealth doesn't seem to have made him into a fully-spoiled jerk. (In the third act, well, the charm is gone, and he's gone straight from spoiled to curdled.)
Still, it's not hard to see how the line between the reality of transaction and the fantasy that is Vanya's life would begin to blur. Instead of having to hustle for dances each night, she's going to clubs, getting massages, flying on a private jet to Vegas, and hanging out with him and his friends, all on his dime. (Interestingly enough, the only real difference between Ani and Vanya's friends/hangers-on is that she has sex with him; in a way, their relationship with him is nearly as transactional as hers.) For someone who's grown up poor (or at least lower-middle class) like Ani has, the world the wealthy inhabit has to feel like a dream. Your bed is always made, there's always Voss water in the fridge, you have a regular suite at Caesars Palace, you buy whatever you want but never pay a bill. You can see some of her discomfort with it — like when Klara is vacuuming around Vanya or at the casino when Vanya goes all in at blackjack with more money than Ani would probably see in a year — but with his proposal, she can give in to the fantasy that this is her new life. She's not going to be one of the people vacuuming the carpets or giving massages (or dancing naked for gross old men). She's not going to have to hustle any more.
That's part of the fantasy, too, though. It was never not going to be a transaction. As his bought-and-paid-for “horny girlfriend,” Ani had to be continually available and up for anything, whether it was partying or jackrabbit-style sex or curling around him like a koala bear while he ignored her and played video games, and all with a smile on her face. For all her illusions about being in love, as his wife she was just as bought-and-paid-for, only with a sable coat, a four-carat ring, and a mansion that belonged to someone else. Money, not love, was always going to be the thing that mattered. And with Vanya holding all the cards, she was never going to get to stop performing.

Movie Musical Divas Tournament: Round 1
Helen (1938- ): Prince (1969) - Sophia | Caravan (1971) - Monica | Sholay (1975) - special appearance in song "Mehbooba Mehbooba" | Don (1978) - Kamini Dubbed by Asha Bhosle.
"Asha Bhosle, who was frequently Helen’s singing voice in films, said this about her: “She was so pretty that the moment she would enter the room, I would stop singing and look at her. In fact, I would request her not to come when I was recording! Do you know that famous story when I told Helen that I would have eloped with her if I were a man! That is true,“" - anonymous
Lone Hertz (1939-): Frøken Nitouche (1963 - Charlotte Borg) | Sommer i Tyrol (1964 - Klara Müller) Dubbed by Katy Bødtger.
This is a long shot, but I just have to submit this icon of my childhood. I hope the video gets some of her cheeky charm across, even for the non-danish speakers. For context: She's a student of a convent school who secretly becomes a revue singer and this is her first performance (as far as I remember). Her singing voice is dubbed by Katy Bødtger.
This is Round 1 of the Movie Musical Divas tournament. Additional polls in this round may be found by searching #mmround1, or by clicking the link below. Add your propaganda and support by reblogging this post.

Excerpts:
Do the characters Murphy plays stay with him? He talks about playing Tommy Shelby on Peaky Blinders for a decade. “By the fifth or sixth season he would be driving the car, not me ... I understood the character so well that sometimes he would make the choices, not me.” He laughs. “That sounds really pretentious and wanky, but that’s the truth.”
Murphy’s wife, Yvonne McGuinness, is a visual artist, and one of their two sons, Aran, who is 16, has been cast in Taika Waititi’s adaptation of the Kazuo Ishiguro novel Klara and the Sun. At home “there’s an awful lot of discussion about books and plays and shows”, says Murphy. “That’s always been the way if you’re two artists who are in a relationship – and then, naturally, the kids get stuck with it.”
Has he been enjoying the ceremonies? “Much, much more than I anticipated,” he says. “And mostly because you meet all these people whose work you’ve admired and watched throughout the year, and you get to have a really good chat about this sort of stuff, about art and music and making things, and that’s been, for me, the best part ...“I will say that it’s been so brilliant being out there and seeing all this amazing Irish talent, seeing Barry Keoghan and Andrew Scott and Paul Mescal, and then Ed Guiney and Andrew Lowe, who produced Poor Things. It is a staggering footprint we have on the world of cinema.”
“I think the most important thing is that we support and encourage and promote the next round, the next generation, all these young film-makers and actors who are coming up,” he says. “I think Screen Ireland is doing a good job of that, and I think the Government has got to keep funding it. I think it’s up to my generation, too, to encourage the next. I remember working with Brendan Gleeson [early on], and he was the most open, patient, kind man. He gave me a lift home and really listened to me when I asked him questions. He had no need to do that.”
Is he more conscious of that because Aran is now in the acting world too? “I am,” he says. He pauses and adds: “And he did that on his own ... It’s the next generation are the most exciting ones. Barry Keoghan and Paul Mescal, it’s kind of staggering how good they are.”
Is he nervous about the Oscar ceremony? “I get nervous, but there’s nothing you can do. I mean, the die is cast, and what will be will be. You just try to have a good night.” But he’d like an Oscar, right? He laughs and then smiles enigmatically. “No comment.”
