the desserts! he misses good kunafeh and doesnt know how to make it like his mom used to (at some point hammond buys him niche storebought ones as a gift. tastes awful but he appreciates the gesture and i think YOU should try kunafeh one day and oops just realized trace is lactose intolerant and so he cant have kunafeh (its got cheese in it as literally THE main ingredient) sad! well lets just say he toughs it out because its the good shit

He also misses semolina pudding! (mamounia its called) This one he can make at home but its not the same as having it made for you yk?? its special and feels lonely eating it at a table alone instead of with family. (OH big thing with arabs is food and hospitality. if youre invited for lunch you get a second serving no questions asked. dining with familys a big thing)

I made kunafeh. I had a hankering for it for weeks now, n wanted to try and make it.

One of the local key foods markets had Kaitefeh (shredded philo dough.) I didn’t have orange food colour. I also used pecans instead of pistas (pistachios), as that’s what I found in the store at the time I did the shopping for ingredients.

Trader joes used to put out a frozen one during the pandemic. I remember the long lines I endured just for that. They also limited the purchase amount to I think 5? I used to heat them in the electric steamer lunchbox I have.

Cafe Outing

My sister suggested we go to one of our favourite cafes and get some good food and read some good books ^_^

Despite all our trips out and about we have actually never just sat and relaxed at a cafe so it was nice to do so today

I was reading a favourite book of mine and, I got to a bit that made me tear up and it made me think of that River Song quote

The one that’s sort of like, “I hate good wizards in fairytales, they always turn out to be him (the Doctor)”

Only in my case I just think… I love reading books and seeing my beloved friends in the characters ^_^ the compassion and kindness that only seems real in fairytales only it isn’t, it’s in real life too Alhamdulilah

And seeing a bit of myself, seeing parts of myself and where they came from

Oh the food was delicious also, they have also started selling a Dubai Chocolate themed cheesecake! So of course I ordered it, I guess today’s sort of a cheesecake day as a reward for persevering and wrangling down my simmering anxieties and worries that threaten to bubble over, during the day to day of my life.

As you may note it’s much flatter/shorter than the Dubai Chocolate Kunafeh cheesecake I get from another bakery, it also isn’t half as crunchy or pistachio-y I’m afraid. However, it’s easier to go to this cafe for cheesecake (they have several types and just generally have a great dessert counter)

So while I wouldn’t get it as a big treat the way I would for the other Dubai Chocolate Kunafeh cheesecake, it’s definitely a spot to go to for cheesecake days, especially since it’s closer so I don’t need to shell out for travel 🥹

I was rather extravagant getting two drinks as well as the meal and dessert but, c’mon rose hot chocolate I had to go for it 🥰 tasted lovely, like a warm rooh afza only fancier

OMG kunafeh!!! that's what I call them!! OMG that is ONE amazing dessert. okay I am very happy to talk about them!! I love the cheese kunafeh or cream kunafeh, especially when they're hot and drizzled with sugar syrup (I like drizzled more than soaked in sugar). and I esp love it when the outer layer of vermicelli is crisp and a bit reddish. mouth-watering! not quite fond of the pistachio ones but they're also nice. I once made one and they turned out good but not as good enough as one from a restaurant/sweet shop. (lemme see if I have a pic)
