What did you do today?
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Because I sat on the floor in a car park and took pictures of birds.
Bonus, because birds are delightful and ridiculous;
The most baked-looking woodpigeon showing off his cleavage;
Tumblr media
The same woodpigeon going full-on Naruto;
Tumblr media
And whatever the fuck is happening here.

I never upload to this blog anymore but I wanted to share some pics bc today I had my first birdwatching boat trip and it was insane
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I literally spend 3 of the 4 hours like this 😧 looking at everything LMAO, the audouin gulls specially were flying a meter away from you making direct eye contact and the number of yellow leggeds was huge... Apparently we had an incredibly good number of shearwaters (balearic, cory's and scopoli's) and they flew so so close to the boat for a really long time. I felt really emotional when I saw them hovering over the water upclose, it's so magical the way they do it. I didn't get any good pictures of them specifically but you can see them here and there in some of the photos

We also saw a European storm petrel, a parasitic jaeger (I was expecting more in number, and hopefully a long tailed but no luck; still super good views of it) and the cherry on top a 1st summer caspian gull 🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰 I'm so so happy with the trip and I can't wait to get on a boat

A little bit of Nature before we go along. The first is a spectacular flower - no idea what it is, but I loved it. Then some Broom, a Caper flower (they both grow wild) and a bird - would you believe a Yellow-legged Gull - Larus michahellis michahellis! More unidentified flowers (ask Heather - she probably knows) with the last one being a Hydrangea - I think I know that one - it is not a rose or a dandelion because I know them too. But one that fascinated me was the one that looks like a somewhat spindly Scotch Thistle. It is probably a subspecies, but we have seen it in various shades of blue, pink and yellow.

Round 1, Side A: Match 7
Tumblr media Tumblr media
[Image ID: Two pictures of gulls. The left is a glaucous gull standing on a rock with a glaucous gull chick behind it. The right is a yellow-legged gull standing on a rock with a cityscape in the background. /End ID]
The glaucous gull (Larus hyperboreus) lives and breeds around the Arctic. The second largest gull behind the great black-backed gull, they typically measure 55-77 cm (22-30 in) in length and 132-170 cm (52-67 in) in wingspan. They may weigh over 2.3 kg (5 lbs), making them the heaviest gull species in the world. They are very pale in coloring, with no black on the wings or tail. They have white underparts and head, pale grey back, pale grey wings with white tips, pink legs, and hefty yellow bill with red spot. They feed on fish, invertebrates, carrion, small mammals, and other birds, and steal food from other birds.
The yellow-legged gull (Larus michahellis) was only recently accepted as its own species. They are found in Europe, the Middle East, and northern Africa. They typically measure 52-68 cm (20-27 in) in length and 120-155 (47-61 in) in wingspan. They have white underparts and head, grey back, yellow legs, and yellow bill with red spot. Their grey wings are black at the tips with small white "mirrors." They feed on fish, invertebrates, small mammals, other birds, and carrion.
