Les Misérables: reworked for the modern audience
It took me a while to see @lesmisofficial at the Sondheim, but the new staging successfully updates and reinvigorates a classic.
The iconic musical is just as impactful in its reworked guise as the record-breaking original.

Just watched act 1 of the restaged tour and wow, I am not a fan of how it's directed. What are your opinions?
OHHHHH BOY.
We can go ahead and say I didn’t love it.
I paid good money, saw it, and I gave it a shot. To summarize, I should point you toward my scene-by-scene review of the National Tour from 2016 for ALL THE OPINIONS. If you want details, that’s where they are. All of them.
My opinion of the restaged tour is that it’s change for change’s sake, and was completely unnecessary. Only one or two minor elements of the reimagined tour enhanced the show, and nearly everything else detracted either from it or (at best) was just “there.” It seemed to dummy-down the design of the original by force-feeding the audience with new, obnoxious sets, which in Notes 1 almost made it impossible to focus on what is being said.
Blocking wise, there were many extremely poor directing choices here, from MOTN all the way through the Final Lair. Congratulations to Laurence Connor, who successfully made the Phantom a completely unlikable, potentially abusive jerk in the Final Lair scene alone (alongside Storm Lineberger’s completely unlikable Raoul, which left Christine with zero legitimate man choices). Basically the whole “love triangle” thing didn’t exist, which made Christine’s interaction with either the Phantom or Raoul feel extremely forced and stupid. Also it took the Phantom’s really cool character arc and made it:
The cast did the best with what was handed to them, but overall it seemed like Connor’s attempt to make a badly executed statement as a director on a show that required no changes to its direction. If anything, I think the restaged tour made me appreciate the original that much more.
I understand Connor being put in an impossible position by CamMac (either direct the show that doesn’t need to be fixed or be the man that turned CamMac down), but I can’t make sense of the direction approach at all and didn’t appreciate the direction he took the show.

JOSEPH AND THE AMAZING TECHNICOLOR DREAMCOAT
Birmingham Hippodrome, Wednesday 6th April 2022
Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice’s first (and best) musical is on the road again in this refurbished production by director Laurence Connor. There are a few interesting changes, most of which work brilliantly. Firstly, the use of children. Liberated from the usual choir corral, the kids come and go,…
