Leo awoke with a senseless, overwhelming FEAR rooted deep within his gut. He sat upright in bed, his leg still aching from the beating he took in the Prison Dimension, but he knew that wasn’t what he was worried about. He started looking around, his eyes wide and red with terror. In the end, he was unable to find what he was looking for.

But then, all of a sudden, with no prompting whatsoever, fear turned into a DESPERATION so LOUD AND PAINFUL that Leo thought he would be crushed underneath it. It was a feeling unlike any other, an emotion he’d only felt once before, and it was CRUSHING him!

And for some odd, unbelievable reason, it all centered around Donatello.

His Twin.

Leo didn’t even give himself the time to think on it any longer. He just ran out of bed as fast as his still aching legs would go! He opened the door to his train car, almost ran right past Donnie’s because he’s still not used to the new layout of his brand new forever-home, but quickly corrected himself before getting to the kitchen and ran back towards Donnie’s room.

When he finally arrived, Donnie was already on his feet. He seemed frazzled, dazed even, by something that wasn’t even there.

And by god, Leo felt exactly the same way.

The two were inseparable within an instant.

Leo crashed into Donnie’s plastron immediately, making the two turtles crash back onto the soft-shell’s bed. The lack of retribution towards the sudden physical contact on Donnie’s end made the bubbling anxiety within Leo’s chest tighten, constricting on his lungs and making it hard to breathe. Leo tried to fight it back, because he knew that Donnie felt the same way, but it only led him to a new feeling he hadn’t yet felt. A feeling of loneliness, of grief, of being lost and worried he’d never be found…!

Nope. Wait, scratch that, he has felt this feeling before…

But for some reason, it’s worse this time…

Leo’s chest ACHED so so much with all these new, unprompted emotions that just came out of NOWHERE, and so he just… Cried. He cried into Donnie’s shoulder, tightened his grip on his twin, and just barely managed to lift the weight in his heart by a little bit. Slowly but surely, after what felt like an eternity, Leo’s tears slowed, his exhaustion from just being woken up taking up the space that the emotions left behind. Until eventually, there was nothing left to feel except an insurmountable emptiness and exhaustion.

The red-eared slider didn’t want to let go of his twin just yet, didn’t wanna leave the only proof of his very existence, but he knew the hug had to end at some point. So, with a heavy heart, Leo began to let go.

But Donnie, despite everything, still clung desperately to Leo’s body, muttering words that Leo couldn’t hear. His voice was a whisper, a desperate and sad version of a voice that Leo had grown to adore. It wasn’t the voice of exasperation or the voice of annoyance, no. It was the voice of longing and desperation… A voice that did not belong to Donatello in the slightest.

“Tello…?” Leo murmured into his twin’s shoulder, his own voice raw from the tears he’d just shed. “Are you good?” He didn’t get an immediate response, so he just hugged harder.

“I feel like…” Donnie suddenly began, his voice still quiet and sad. Leo tuned his ears so he could listen intently, not wanting to miss a single syllable. Because… What an odd way for Donnie to start a sentence. “Feels like you left and never came back.” Donnie said. “L-like you died or something, and that you were gone for years! Then I woke up and you were with me again, but something was still missing, and then you just… Then it clicked back.”

Oh. So that’s what that feeling was.

“I feel the same way.” Leo supplied carefully. His head was beginning to hurt from the sudden swell of emotions, but he pushed the pain away for the time being.

And then suddenly, before Leo had time to even process what the hell just happened, Donnie’s grip loosened and his head plonked onto his shoulder heavily. He didn’t just immediately fall asleep, but the turtle looked TIRED AS ALL HELL. Poor guy was probably awake all night again! So Leo did what any Good Samaritan would do and carefully set Donnie to bed, not wanting to touch his shell and warrant an unprompted panic attack. But just as he was about to leave Donnie to sleep, his twin grabbed ahold of his wrist and didn’t let go.

“I JUST- I want to be sure that you’ll still be here. My cameras were ruined in the attack last month and I haven’t gotten around to fixing the ones in your room yet, so I just… I-I need to-“

“Donnie, if you wanted a Twin Cuddle, you could’ve just said so!” Leo giggled half heartedly, the smile on his face feeling more like a grimace. “Now move over you big log!”

“Shut up, Dum-Dum.”

Idk how to end this so we’ll leave it there ig. This was inspired by a previous ask similar to this where they wrote in brackets that the present twins just spontaneously felt the same way as the future twins. Thanks for that little burst of inspiration!

Aw man I have an idea for a “Leo spends a lot longer in the Prison Dimension” divergence.

The way the Prison Dimension works is that it essentially keeps you alive so long as you haven’t completely broken.

Leo, despite how sure he was that he was going to die, didn’t want to, and that’s all the Prison Dimension needed to keep him “alive” and “resetting” him. His body is kept in the exact same state he was in when he entered the dimension - messed up, but mostly okay.

Also, Leonardo “jokes are how I cope” Hamato eventually uses his newfound “oh I can’t die” status as a way to relentlessly quip at Krang One. Sure, he “dies” many times doing this, but eventually he just treats it like a game. How much does he have to fuck around until he finds out?

The amount varies.

He’s thankful that his (Casey’s-) photo is still intact, though at some point he has to etch the names of the people in it (his family-) into the walls of whatever building rubble he called home.

Sometimes he and Krang One talk. It’s almost nice, at times, having another being there.

Leo doesn’t know what to think of this.

The nice feeling always ends with his “corpse”, anyway.

Leo’s eventually saved, of course, and he’s brought back home and he smiles, smiles, because of course his brothers saved him! Of course he got out! He never gave up, not really, so they didn’t either-

And then he noticed how tall they were. How Mikey had hair, how Raph’s scars had long healed, how Donnie’s tech was more advanced.

Six years, they tell him. Six years.

And Leo looks the same. Just as banged up as ever, still a mess of bruises and cuts that he’s grown so familiar with. (And it does not escape Raph’s eye how dark the ring of bruises around Leo’s neck are-)

And it’s fine! It’s fine. He just needs to play catch up, now. He’s technically six years older too, right? Only his body is sixteen. His wounds will heal, and he will grow up too.

Only that doesn’t happen.

Because here’s the thing about the Prison Dimension: it’s grown fond of Leo. Six years is nothing to it, but Leo was new, different from what normally comes through. Leo was a bright blue light that only grew brighter with time, coming back from where it was almost snuffed out. So, a piece of the Dimension attaches itself to Leo’s soul, living yet not, and he remains as he’s been for the past near decade.

His wounds do not heal. He does not grow.

He exists more than he lives. And in the back of his mind he can hear Krang One screaming.

He wonders if his own screaming was heard back.

i watched an angst tiktok, like, ONCE

something something leo thinks he has died when he went to the prison dimension and he’s living thinking he is in the afterlife and his brothers and the world around him is not a reality. his bros naturally don’t take this lightly.

(based on when leo says “took you guys long enough” when his brothers rescue him. he didn’t think they were rescuing him; mikey was NOT powerful enough, there was no way leo was saved. so he just. thinks they’re unreal because he didn’t expect them to come. he thinks hes being pulled into his limbo his afterlife AFTER HE HAS DIED. i do not remember who made this idea on tiktok but it ROTS in my BRAIN /pos)

just had a random question come up in my mind- if Void did in fact age in the prison dimension, but couldn’t die as he claimed in the fic, what would have happened if he didn’t manage to teleport? Would he have just continued to age? Does that incline that he would just grow super super old but never die from his old age? Perhaps there was a time loop thingy for the prison dimension where it makes you age multiple times: for example, you would grow very old and then “restart” to the age you were when you got trapped there. Like an endless cycle of aging. I mean- the place was created to be an inescapable prison of physiological torture and high chance of insanity-

well, to be honest... i hadn't thought about it too much. because, frankly, my base was that aging would not stop. which is probably a bit too Hard Core to think about, but I do love the idea of a cycle style hehe.

WELL this also may be over thinking it, but i like to think that Krang 1) have extremely long lifespans and 2) for them, there isn't quite a state of "death"...

Rather, I like to think that if a Krang becomes too old to fight or their minds start to deteriorate, they move on to their 'last stage of life'.... which is to be assimilated into the organic matter that makes their Krang tech. I like to think that the organic matter that makes up the Technodrome (and other Krang tech that utilizes the 'hive mind'/'organic piloting') is made up of Krang that have 'died'. That's how their tech can be organic and mesh with the pilot so well.

But!! That's just a fun theory. (A bit more comforting than Leo running into vegetable Krang bodies just laying around, right???) But for Leo, homie would have ended up looking like Master Oogway eventually LOL

Brief Summary:

It took them a while to notice.

The Krang were defeated, their wounds are still healing, and grief settles deep in the lair as everyone comes to terms with the loss of one of their own. It’s understandable that they’d write off the sudden cold spots, misplaced objects, and flickering candle lights at first.

It isn’t until items are breaking and doors are slamming that they considered the paranormal. As insane as it sounded, that was just their life nowadays.

Then the texts started to come in, from a certain slider’s number.

AKA: Leo died in the Prison Dimension. Unsatisfied with how he left his family, he returns, but not how any of them hoped. As it turns out, there’s a difference between being a Spirit, and becoming a Ghost.

We’re back! (More info under cut)

After ignoring the existence of this au for awhile I designed to revive the story but re write it to make more sense. In the original story, Leo was just supposed to die shortly after being pulled from the prison dimension and ends up in the afterlife with Gram Gram where life is like living in a retirement community, Leo finds a way to visit his family in the living world but only Mikey could see him. This was a concept that a lot of people seemed to like which made me really happy. But overtime, I started thinking that I didn’t really have much of a story. I didn’t even know what the end goal should have been. So I kind of just forgot about the whole idea. However, every once in awhile I would see that some people would find the dead au and like it which got me thinking about it again. I decided to sort of reboot the AU and rewrite the story. I first made this AU when I first got into the tmnt fandom so seeing how my art and story telling skills evolve like this is really cool to me.

✨ROTTMNT Ghost AU✨

The Rise of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Alternate Universe (ROTTMNT Ghost AU) Is a retelling of the aftermath of the ROTTMNT movie. Instead of being freed from the prison dimension and reuniting with his brothers, Leo dies shortly after being pulled out of the prison dimension and his family is unable to save him. Instead of ending up in the afterlife with Gram Gram and all of the other Hamato spirits, he ends up in some strange limbo.

The only thing in this vast nothingness is a tiny island with a tree and a little pond (that is there for plot purposes)

Meanwhile Leo’s family is having a hard time grieving the tragic loss of their Baby Blue. Raph won’t stop training (blaming himself for the death). Donnie, not aloud to where his battle shell as ordered by Casey, only wears the waited hoodie Leo gave him on their sixteenth birthday. He has also resigned to secluding himself in his lab.

Meanwhile Mikey is trying to find a way to at least talk to Leo no matter how much Casey and Draxum say he needs to rest after opening an interdental portal. He goes to the Mystic library for answers and ends up finding a Spell that lets him communicate with the dead, with that spell, he manages to communicate with Leo through his limbo. Now, Mikey is trying to find a way to fully resurrect his brother, so they can all be a family again.

2. Chapter

(quick note: all of the events are happening after the movie)

- After the fight with the krang aliens the turtles help Casey move in with April.

- Everyone that got hurt got treatment,but something felt awfully wrong...

- It felt too quiet, too tense ,too blank ,too empty...

- Everyone needed a break from everything so the turtles all went to their rooms.

- After a few days things started to get better not actually but noone said anything even Mikey was suspiciously quiet

- So one day Mikey decided to make lunch hopping to get someone to open up,but it was too quiet,too awfully quiet again.

- Until Mikey asked "Is anyone enjoying the food,I made?",Leo looks at him with tired eyes says trying to ack calm "Sure."mumbling to himself "So, you're just going to pretended like nothing happened?"and looks down.

...

- It didn't change anything the awkward silence wasn't gone

- Mikey looked down trying to hide in his shell,it was too awkward...too awfully awkward....

- Raph looked at Mikey like he wanted to say something,but ultimately saying nothing.

- It was too awkward, someone needed to say something again.

- Donnie trying to for the first time in a long while lighten up the mood he took a deep breath, trying to break the awkward silence and saying

"I'm going to my room.", slowly standing up, turning around and going to his room.

- Everyone was looking worriedly at Donnie except Leo that was too tired to even look up , right after Donnie leaves the room Leo uncomfortably calmly says "Im also going to my room."

- Now it was just Mikey and Raph in the kitchen it wasn't too awkwardly anymore, well that was at least a start.

- Raph a few minutes after Leo leaves the room says to Mikey"It's getting late, you should go to sleep.",Mikey pops out his head out of his shell and saying"Sure,but only if you go to bed too!",

Dr. Delicate touch is still doing their job hah.

- Raph agree's and goes to bed, Mikey doesn't keeps his word and goes to his room to draw until he's too tired sleep.

- After Leo went to his room he fell on his head and immediately fallen asleep.

- As Leo closed his eyes the room around him started to disappear.

- He was in the prison dimension re - liveing the same day of the invasion.

- The krang alien was beating Leo saying "I'll get that grin of your face!","YOU'RE the reason why my plan failed!".....

- Leo was calm like he was used to it already, mumbling annoyed "Not this again."

- The portal opened but on the other side were his brothers, laughing, joking, having fun, without HIM.....

- Leo was just standing there looking at his brother's having fun without him, without his annoying presence

- It was wrong, but he felt like he deserved it.

- The room replayed the day when he lost the key

- How fullish he was,how irresponsible he was.

- Leo starts to regret it

- Everything turns black and an intimidating voice says to Leo

"YOU ruined everything!"

"YOU almost killed them by being your irresponsible self!"

"YOU don't deserve to be happy!"

"YOU don't deserve to be safe with your brothers when you almost killed them!"

"YOU deserve to be stuck in the prison dimension for the rest of your life!"

"YOU should've died!"

- Leo starts to sob falling to the ground saying

"I deserved it."

"They would be much happier without me!"

"Why!?"

"Why did Mikey have to save me instead of leaving me in the prison dimension,like I deserved!?!?"

- Leo stops talking now fully crying curled up on the ground,as he slowly wakes up to reality sleeping on his bed safe,with his brothers he didn't deserve it.

10. Everyone's just fine with Donnie modding the moon buggy? (362 notes)

It occurred to me that despite being MASSIVE nerds for the Jupiter Jim franchise, the bros seemed awfully chill with Donnie taking an actual on-set moon buggy and modding the hell out of it.

A few people argued with me in the notes that the Turtle Tank is so cool no one could possibly be mad about it and I do think that's fair. The Turtle Tank is easily my favorite thing Donnie made in the show.

9. Splinter and Leo talk post movie (443 notes)

And then his dad walks in and says, “I would like to talk to Blue, please. Alone.” And suddenly Leo doesn’t feel so good anymore.

This is the most recent tumblr fic I've done (I think lol), so seeing it make it this high felt pretty good. I love Splinter and his boys... they make me emotional.

REALLY good. it's set pre movie so there's not that trauma, it's literally just the twins fucking the 12 kraang up and living up to their nickname while the 12 turtles (and rise mikey and raph) look on in horror
