No Rest For The Innocent.
Tumblr media
" Falling asleep usually leads into dreaming or darkness, and thats held close as relief. Calming, safe, and wanted...
Though, for some, when they slip into sleep?
It's not the same peace and relaxation.
For some, it's a reenactment.
A WarZone for others.
Never getting to feel the grip of sleep, instead only waking into alternative realities. Replaying the familiar scrips of their own stories, beloved creativity and creation. Turning sour as they're forced to live it's story out at night.
Writing, recording, all expressions leading into those hellish nights.
Leaving,
No Rest For The Innocent. "

TO THE ENDS OF THE EARTH (1948)
Tumblr media
Screenplay by Jay Richard Kennedy
Directed by Robert Stevenson
One of the first post-war movies that attempted to deal seriously with the burgeoning narcotics trade in defiance of a Production Code that forbade nearly any mention of the subject! In true “docu-noir” style, Treasury agent Dick Powell trots the globe trying to pin down the leader of a diabolical heroin ring with a series of surprising occurrences culminating in a stunning denouement. Directed by Robert Stevenson, this fascinating period suspenser is almost never screened theatrically. Don’t miss this one!
FORMAT: 35mm

WHIPLASH (1948)

Screenplay by Maurice Geraghty and Harriet Frank Jr.
Directed by Lewis Seiler
Blend OUT OF THE PAST with BODY AND SOUL and what do you get? An artist who falls for a mystery woman, pursues her to the Big Apple, and ends up fighting for the middleweight championship! A contentious Dane Clark is artist/boxer Mike Angelo, Alexis Smith is his sexy siren, Eve Arden the sassy girlfriend, Douglas Kennedy the scar-faced gunsel, and best of all, Zachary Scott is the sadistic wheelchair-bound fight manager! “Whiplash” is what you’ll get keeping up with the breakneck plot pacing culminating in a smashing finale!

Epilepticon 2022 Movie Marathon
The Winning Team (1952) dir. Lewis Seiler
Summary: A biographical film on Grover Cleveland Alexander, a pitcher for the New York Yankees, and the personal and professional struggles he faced after developing epilepsy.
Representation: Halfway through the film, Alexander develops epilepsy due to an exploding shell injuring him during his service in World War One. He is shown to have epileptic seizures including in front of hundreds of spectators.
He sees a private doctor about his epilepsy and describes having auras (or “seeing a bright light” as he calls them) before having “blackout” seizures where his body goes completely limp, causing him to faint. The doctor recommends that Alexander keeps this information private as it could harm his baseball career.

100+ Films of 1952
Film number 145: Operation Secret
Release date: November 8th, 1952
Studio: Warner Brothers
Genre: drama
Director: Lewis Seiler
Producer: Henry Blanke
Actors: Cornel Wilde, Steve Cochran, Phyllis Thaxter, Karl Malden
Plot Summary: After WWII ends, a tribunal is formed to determine if Peter Forrester, an American in the French Foreign Legion and US Marines, was responsible for murder and espionage. People who knew him throughout the war testify about their experiences with him.
My Rating (out of five stars): ***
We’re now 145 movies in, so guess what? It’s time for another “meh” film! As always with “meh,” it’s not bad... but it’s also not great. It’s a fairly standard war film that tries to fit way too much into its 108-minute run time. (some spoilers)
The Good:
Phyllis Thaxter. I didn't like her at all in Springfield Rifle, but in this she was the highlight of the entire film for me! I’m sure it’s because she actually got to play a strong and interesting character this time instead of a cardboard “good wife” role. I found her very charming and alluring.
Cornel Wilde. Wilde can turn me into a schoolgirl with his handsome looks and truckloads of charisma. In this film he didn’t exactly turn my knees to jelly, but I still enjoyed his performance. And I was happy that for once he wasn’t shirtless on the movie poster! He was a little more humanized this time.
Wilde and Thaxter did have some good chemistry.
For Hollywood, this covers an uncommonly shown aspect of WWII- the French Occupation from the perspective of French citizens. There was only one American character in the cast, which was unusual as well.
The film doesn't dumb things down for the audience. At least most of the time. (Cough. Anti-Communist propaganda. Cough.)
The Bad:
Accents!! Classical Hollywood films always treat character accents as a superfluous afterthought, but this was one of the most egregious I’ve seen. I adore Karl Malden, but his limp attempt at a French accent was distractingly bad. Many other characters, like Thaxter’s Maria, didn’t even try. I was frequently confused about who was supposed to be an American and who was supposed to be European, which sucked some of the power out of the movie.
This is another example of a film that has too broad of a scope for one story. It would have been better if it focused on one or two specific events instead of covering the entirety of WWII.
Even though the Germans were supposed to be the villains in this, remember that it was made in 195communist witchhunts2. A heavy-handed bit of anti-Communism simply must be included!
There wasn’t really any suspense or mystery for me about Wilde’s character. Of course he couldn’t be a baddie! He was a Hollywood hero!
A lot of the supporting characters, including the possible bad guys, were too similar. I kept forgetting who was who.
The film was ostensibly about the murder of a guy named Armand DuBois, but it never gave us any reason to care about or get to know him. By the end, I was kind of like, “Wait, who was that guy, again?”
It got pretty dry and monotonous at times with all the fighting. War films can do this to me sometimes- they lose their shock value after a while and it just becomes a numbing string of battle after battle. Now, in reality, this is probably what war feels like to some degree, but it just doesn’t work for me in the context of a movie.

Peter Seiler and George Ricci, laughter in the Death House.
It is the evening of December 15, 1927. At Sing Sing Prison the convicts are putting on their regular Christmas show, a light musical comedy called ‘A Sweet Little Devil.’ Some 600 of New York State’s toughest convicts are enjoying the show, one of several reforms instituted by famed Warden Lewis E. Lawes. Probably America’s most famous and divisive prison official, Lawes sees it as his job to…
