Epilepticon 2022 Movie Marathon
The Winning Team (1952) dir. Lewis Seiler
Summary: A biographical film on Grover Cleveland Alexander, a pitcher for the New York Yankees, and the personal and professional struggles he faced after developing epilepsy.
Representation: Halfway through the film, Alexander develops epilepsy due to an exploding shell injuring him during his service in World War One. He is shown to have epileptic seizures including in front of hundreds of spectators.
He sees a private doctor about his epilepsy and describes having auras (or “seeing a bright light” as he calls them) before having “blackout” seizures where his body goes completely limp, causing him to faint. The doctor recommends that Alexander keeps this information private as it could harm his baseball career.

Lewis Seiler’s WOMEN’S PRISON (1955), leaving The Criterion Channel at month’s end, seems to keep forgetting it has a plot, but the pieces making up the whole alternate between great fun and pure tripe. The film starts out focusing on the latter, with Phyllis Thaxter as a housewife doing one to ten for vehicular manslaughter Everything about prison sends her into hysterics, which gets old so fast that before long she’s thrown into solitary while the other more interesting stories play out. Audrey Totter, who has great eyes, is a woman whose husband (Warren Stevens) is doing time in the men’s prison just over the wall. He keeps trying to sneak in, with neither realizing that a little supply closet hanky panky could make it hard to cover up his visits. Meanwhile, sadistic warden Ida Lupino keeps locking horns with prison doctor Howard Duff, and floozy-with-a-heart-of-gold Jan Sterling steals everything but the guard towers. For all its silliness, the film has some fascinating touches, little godsends for the dedicated viewer. As awful as she is, Lupino is also presented as a victim of the ruthless warden of the men’s prison, who keeps threatening her job if she doesn’t crack down mercilessly on her charges. Sterling pulls off some impressive slaloms between brash tough-girl talk and vulnerable reaction shots, and she also lets herself get increasingly disheveled as her prison stay progresses. You also get Cleo Moore in a funny and endearing supporting role, Gertrude Michael as a sympathetic matron and Juanita Moore as a prisoner named “Polytechnic.”
