working in a library, i encounter a lot of people who are in the process of filling out important forms, sending important faxes, and copying important documents. and the more important these things are, the more stressful, meaning i end up assisting a lot of really stressed people with a lot of really stressful paperwork, and have thus developed the ultimate line to immediately validate and empathize with their situation
“they don’t make it easy, do they?”
i nearly always use this line at some point in the conversation & it works without fail, because there is ALWAYS a they and they are ALWAYS not making it easy. you don’t have to specify who “they” are. you don’t even need to have an approximate idea of their role in this process.
job application? disability paperwork? insurance documents? financial aid paperwork? in any situation, the person visibly relaxes & enthusiastically agrees, because someone understands their plight: they are out there & they are NOT making it easy

Its been said many times before but honest if you assume that all children are little gremlins and are trying to ruin your day by existing unless they act 100% angelic then I simply can't trust you

a thunderstorm just hit us really fast and so hard it knocked the power clean out for at least my whole block. we've got several severe weather alerts, so naturally I am standing on my balcony smoking a joint and watching my street flood

Happy Library Workers Day to library workers everywhere. To those who are seen on social media or websites, but also to those whose day-to-day work keeps them out of the spotlight. To the staff answering Ask-A-Librarian queries at the speed of light. To those who are, at this moment, cataloging. Organizing. Archiving. Digitizing. Repairing. To those who keep our buildings clean and safe. Who keep our websites, including countless public-facing services and documents, secure and available. To those who help libraries, museums and businesses across the state access vital funding. To those working tirelessly so that all Californians have access to education, food, community, and more. To those who have put in decades of service. To those whose journies have just begun. Thank you for all you do to support your libraries and the communities they serve.

Today is National Library Workers Day, which I only found out about an hour ago. Lauren took notice, though!

A long while back I was asked what sort of supervillain I would be. Back then I was vaguely about having my own library organization order. Nowadays I would make anyone who wants to use the library take a library etiquette course, and if they didn't follow it, revoke their library privileges (with leeway for kids bc I am a supervillain, but not out and out evil, thank you)
(YOU might not drink coffee but someone sure stained half that book with a dark liquid and you WILL have to pay for it bc there is no way in hell it was checked out with this level of damage) fess up and pay, you're good, if not, ban >(

me: uhm. would you like a website or a boo-
patron: are you simple or something? its an obvious question. why do you need to ask follow up questions? just get me the information i asked for
me, now resolved to be as minimally helpful as possible: alright sir :) i will page a book in elizbethian english poorly reprinted in 1907 for you. all the pages are falling out and you'll be lucky to read the blurry type. it will take 3 hours to get from the stacks as several pages get lost and die in the attempt. will sir be requiring anything else today? :)
