I really hope we start getting more adult/real world/workplace BLs. I'm more than a little bored with the whole school boy shtick.

Thougths on Life. Love on the line (2020)
Another great BL from Japan, Life. Love on the line is a beautiful, mature, deep love story that relies heavily on symbolism and aesthetic, without being vague or unnecessarily complicated. It's poetic, but also very realistc and relatable.
The Line is the leitmotif that accompanies the protagonists in the different stages of their life. It's a (red) string of fate and also a boundary, that has to be acknowledged before to be overcomed. A line that connects, but can be interrupted because of the wrong choices.
Lastly, for Akira and Yuuki, it's a bond stronger than death itself. Yet, despite them being clearly coded as fated lovers, their happy ending feels earned, as the result of their own decisions and struggles. Destiny means nothing without free will.
Another beautiful, symbolic detail is the Compass engraved on the lighter.
Akira lost his compass and Yuuki found it, not without effort. Akira got lost on the way, confused by familiar pressure and expectations toward living a "normal life".
Yuuki, thanks to a supportive environment (his mother), has always known who he is and where he stands. He warned Akira about the dangers of not following the line (being untrue to oneself) from the very beginning. He wasn't upset about the unexpected kiss, but afraid for Akira, who "could have died" in their fantasy teenage world. And isn't living a life lying to oneself and others almost like not living at all?
The turning point for Akira - where he understands the mistake he made and starts to get free from the chains of his fake life - happens when he stares at the lighter, alone at the bar. He remembers the moment when a smiley Yuuki found it in the sand ("gold in the desert").
Yuuki is the one who holds his inner compass, his true self, the way to his happiness.

Best Siblings Round 1: Prapai & Plerng & Phan (Love in the Air) vs Akira & Hitomi (Life: Senjou no Bokura)
[Submitted Reasons Under Cut]
Prapai & Plerng & Phan: "gotta love an attractive, slutty trio of queer siblings"
Akira & Hitomi: "Hitomi was always a free spirit, forging her own path and making her own future. Since Akira was always the opposite of this it was hard for him to come into his own. Being that he was so scared of being an authentic version of himself his older sister wanted him to break out of his shell. When she saw Akira and Yuuki holding hands she was just instantly proud of him. Not even a moment of hesitation happened. She hugged him and said she was happy."

Prompt from MacReid: Hi. Can you please write a hurt/comfort fic about an insecure Yuki (Nishi) from Life-Love on the Line shortly after they get back together? Him acting overly cautiously, perhaps still fearing that Akira (Ito) would change his mind and leave again even though there was the promise. Thanks. Your writing is awesome.

I've left pretty seashells on the beach, knowing they weren't meant for me, though I'd pick them up still, to admire them, before I leave them to, someone's else's handle, on the crystals of the sand. Or perhaps to, be drug away by the ocean, again, lost, with the last memory of my admiration before its gone. I've left pretty things before for being too good for me, being too much, because I know at home I have a, boring shelf awaiting them, or a tinted vase, to which they'd be encased, and never spoken to again but from me, isolated by my joy in their existence, because it is a shame, to be loved by me, and for that to be a life. So, I Leave things, for better people, on better days, and never consider, that hiding away might not be such a bad thing, when treasured by a gaze.
