“Frankenstein” by Mary Shelley Liveblog (Chapters 1-8)

Hey so I never read the original Frankenstein before. My only contact with it up to this point was the OUAT version so...yeah.

I’m required to read this for a class, so I figured instead of taking notes the usual way, I would instead liveblog my thoughts.

Idk if I need to warn about this but, spoilers for Frankenstein I guess?

Enjoy.

Introductory Stuff

- Ok reading the back I can tell why my professors picked this book. “Frankenstein not only tells a terrifying story, but also raises profound, disturbing questions about the very nature of life and the place of humankind within the cosmos: What does it mean to be human? What responsibilities do we have to each other? How far can we go in tampering with Nature?”

- If my professors ask one of those as the quiz question on Tuesday I’m going to combust.

- There was a little bio about Mary Shelley’s life. Her life could be it’s own book god damn.

- Apparently Frankenstein was inspired by a dream she had after a friend suggested a ghost story competition.

- Ok I mentioned how one of the questions is “How far can we go in tampering with Nature?” So there was a timeline of events around Mary Shelley’s life. More than 100 years after her death, the sheep Dolly, the first successfully cloned animal, was born. Bro.

The Actual Story

- At first I was like “Oh Victor’s dad adopts Caroline that’s cute! That means she will be his older sister when he’s born :D”

- Then I get hit with “Two years after this event Caroline became his wife.”...hello 9-1-1?

- “There was a considerable difference between the ages of my parents” YEAH, YA THINK???”

- “I was their plaything and their idol, and something better - their child, the innocent and helpless creature bestowed on them from Heaven, whom to bring up to good, and whose future lot was it was in their hands to direct to happiness or misery, according as they fulfilled their duties towards me.” This feels important to me. I know that he later goes on to create the monster, making him Victor’s child in a way. Family is gonna be a theme in this story, isn’t it?

- Alright, protective brother Victor! I’m down for it.

- Victor dropping “””””subtle””””” hints that he has a tragic backstory

- Victor’s Dad: Don’t read Cornelius Agrippa! It’s trash!

- Victor: Well guess what, I’m gonna read it even harder.

- “Wealth was an inferior object; but what glory would attend the discovery, if I could banish disease from the human frame, and render man invulnerable to any but a violent death!” - Frankenstein, 1818.

- Me, in 2022, in the middle/aftermath of a pandemic: Yeah I��ve got some bad news for you-

- Victor’s tragic backstory part 1. I knew it would have something to do with Elizabeth, his adoptive sister. I was expecting her to die (though I don’t want her to) but didn’t expect the mother to die instead. At least her death was described as calm, and not painful.

- Professor M. Krempe really just roasted this 17 year old jesus christ

- “I had a contempt for the uses of modern natural philosophy. It was very different when the masters of the science sought immortality and power; such ambition of the inquirer seemed to limit itself to the annihilation of those visions on which my interest in science was chiefly founded.”

- “Such were the professor’s [M. Waldman’s] words - rather let me say such the words of fate, enounced to destroy me...soon my mind was filled with one thought, one conception, one purpose. So much has been done, exclaimed the soul of Frankenstein - more, far more, will I achieve” One school lecture changed his whole world view goddamn.

- “his lecture had removed my prejudices against modern chemists” character development babyyyyyyyyy

- “In other studies you go as far as others have gone before you, and there is nothing more to know; but in a scientific pursuit there is continual food for discovery and wonder.”

- So the secret to animating lifeless matter had bad consequences he’s alluding to (kinda obvious given the story we’re reading but aight). But also he tells us he found out the secret to doing this, but is not gonna tell us until later. Boi why you gotta lead us on like that?

- Should’ve started with a smaller creature, my dude. You’re aiming too high.

- He considers if it would be possible to bring the dead back to life, along with animating lifeless matter. I think he wondered this, not just because it’s a somewhat logical question to ask concerning this, but because he may have hoped he could bring his mother back to life. l i s t e n

- Bro you made that shit. That’s your responsibility now my guy.

- Clerval is either gonna die at the hands of the monster, or will be able to help stop it. Idk which, so I’m saying both so I can say I called it.

- Victor stop ignoring your family challenge. I think you’ll pass in this chapter but idk.

- Elizabeth is best adoptive sister/cousin and best girl. You can’t change my mind.

- If this wasn’t a book from the 1800s I would think that Clerval and Victor were gay for each other.

- Ok idk if I’m reading this wrong but I don’t understand how William died. They explain it but I don’t get it.

- Ok William was murdered. But the muderer is unknown.

- Victor thinks the monster is the murderer. Idk if that’s true. If it is, it’s probably because it’s getting revenge on Victor for ignoring him and running away. If it isn’t, he’s just assuming it is because of how terrifying the monster looks and his bias.

- Hol up. So the monster has been around for two years, and nothing was done about it??? I get Victor was terrified of what he created, but he didn’t think of maybe hunting it down after he recovered from illness? Or telling Clerval of its existence and he could hunt it down? Did he think it would just die if he ignored it??

- Listen gang I didn’t expect this to turn into a murder mystery.

- Rn I’m thinking Justine is innocent, but that doesn’t mean the monster is the one who killed William.

- Ok why did Justine confess? Is she actually guilty, was she bribed, what’s going on?

- Update: her confession was a lie. She was pressured by her confessor into thinking she was guilty. I guess police tactics haven’t changed in the past 200 years.

- “he threatened and menaced, until I almost began to think that I was the monster that he said I was. He threatened excommunication and hell fire in my last moments, if I continued obdurate. Dear lady, I had none to support me; all looked on me as a wretch doomed to ignominy and perdition. What could I do?”

- Parallel between Justine and Frankenstein’s Monster. Victor had abandoned his creation, and had no support, just like Justine. Victor constantly refers to the monster as a “wretch,” which is what everyone now viewed Justine as. The confessor almost convinced Justine she was a monster/murderer, even though she is innocent. This is what makes her confess to being guilty. Everyone thinks she’s a monster, so she acts like she is. The monster Victor created was only deemed a monster based on how it looked. It had not done anything heinous up to that point other than look hideous. Victor treated him like a monster, so, assuming he did kill William, he acted like one.

- “William and Justine, the first hapless victims of my unhallowed arts.” So there are more...(no duh there’s more, there’s like 16 chapters left).

- This seems like a good place to stop for the night.

How did French Kate and Yelena meet each other? They couldn’t stand each other at first like all the other time periods?

I'm sorry I know you sent this 5-6 days ago and I meant to answer it right away. Y'all know I do all my writing on the notes app on my phone because I'm INSANE. It's all meticulously organized in folders by AU at this point but it's still just my Notes app. When I went to look for my notes, my French folder was empty and I have 19k notes so it's a clusterfuck to look through. Either I accidentally deleted all my research notes or idk wtf happened to them because no matter what terms I've used to search for them nothing has come up. Needless to say I've been HEATED and I had to walk away from this ask for a second lol. That was hours of not just French history research but also story groundwork that vanished 😩

I quickly just did some stuff from my shitty ass memory as best I could cuz I didn't want to leave you hanging any longer but it's not the same in depth answer you would've gotten had I still had my notes from before. I'll do it all again eventually but right now I'm too annoyed/mad/sad to bother. ANYWAY...

Cateline Evesque's husband is one of the king's Councillors. Her father is a Count from Southern France. She grew up in a Chateau until her mother died when she was five then her father sent her to receive a convent education. Her family has a long aristocratic lineage. She loved her husband when they married her off at like 16 but eight years later that has sort if evaporated. Especially after two children lost. That changes marriages and people and right now their relationship is rocky AT BEST. She knows he has affairs but she'd rather look the other way than make a big deal out of it. Him being busy with other women means more time with her friends at court.

Hélène Beauchêne is married to a Count/Marquis. Her family comes from money in Northwestern France as her father is a Duke and her mother is a French courtier/daughter of a Duke. Her and her husband are courtiers at Versailles (basically 1700s socialites lol). It was an arranged marriage based on financial and power brokerage between their parents. They got married when they were both like 16/17 and it wasn't terrible for a while. They were at least friendly and did what married couples are expected to do. They tried to do their duty and have kids but it never happened. They're now almost 30 and can barely stand each other after these many years together. There's a constant, suffocating pressure from both sides of the family for heirs but every night Yelena is like "if you touch me you will lose your penis in a really violent way" and he's a bit of a wimp so he doesn't do much about it 😂

SO...Kate and her man Henri have been living in their fancy Versailles apartment overlooking the gardens way before Yelena and her man Lucien move in. They're the new kids on the block but it's not like they're totally out of place. Everyone knows their families and that they're "purebreds" so they're not like...lepers. They've rubbed elbows with some of these people at some point before.

During the daily nigthtime salons it was common for it to eventually get separated by gender and the men went to do their thing while the women did their thing so Lucien ends up with the bros and Yelena ends up gambling and gossiping with Kate and the girlies. (Gambling was HUGE with the women at Versailles. It was in general. It's one of those things they did all day. Not like they had much else going on...)

Kate is like...GOOD at the cards. She's a shark actually. To the point where people almost don't want to play with her because they know they're just going to end up losing a shit ton of money when they do. But Yelena is the new arrival and she doesn't know that. Versailles is a viper's nest so the women went from being lowkey catty af to simply going "Lets just sit back and watch this bitch get demolished by Card Queen Kate." Problem is.........Yelena is actually holding her own. Like.......surprisingly well. She is actually kinda whooping Kate's ass.

Everyone eventually leaves the game and it's just the two of them, toe to toe. Gambling away shit tons of money and the entire court has basically surrounded the table watching popular girl of the court get a bit of a whooping by the new girl.

Yelena makes a huge bet and Kate matches it thinking Yelena HAS to be bluffing. She's been counting the cards. No way she has that good of a hand. She's going to win all that money back and her husband doesn't have to find out the ridiculous amount of money she's already lost tonight. He has no idea how much she gambles because she never loses. Well, that changed tonight and it'll definitely be an issue if she doesn't get it back. Yelena shows her hand. Kate must've miscounted somewhere because she just got FUCKED. She just lost more than a 1/3 of what her husband makes in a year in a single bet. Fuuuuck.

Kate's like "😬again?😬" but Yelena stands up and is like "Nah I'm good. But thanks for the money tho. Night night :)"

Kate is fucking SWEATING BULLETS. How the fuuuuuck is she gonna explain that one? She stands up and goes after Yelena. By now Yelena is in one of the dark, solitary hallways adjacent to the Salon. Kate's like..."Double or nothing?"

Yelena laughs and she's like "....look on your face tells me you can't even pay the single as it is and by the way tonight went I'm fairly certain I'll win the double. It would be unfair of me to take that bet." and just keeps walking. Kate's ass is CLENCHED as she watches Yelena leave but then............Yelena turns.

"I'll make you a deal."

"What deal?"

"There's something in Versailles more valuable than money."

"What?"

"Allies and people with information. Right now I have neither. You show me the ropes and we can consider your debt squared."

"Okay."

"Good night, Cateline."

She gives Kate a once over then starts to walk away as if nothing just happened. Kate calls after her once she's further down the hallway.

"Yo...you gotta be at church tomorrow at 10. It's a must. King will literally come for your ass if you miss it. I'll save you a seat. Dress well, but not too well. You can't upstage the queen."

And Yelena is like "Dope. Thanks. See? You're coming in handy already 😉."

i wish! that more of the book! was focused on roman & neo together and their friendship!! like i get that the first half was important bc they needed to show Just How Alone they both were before each other. but i would’ve gladly traded some of the beginning stuff for just a little more time with the two of them together. like maybe condense some of that and give us a few more anecdotes from their time training together?? just to show the development from wary partners to ride-or-die a little more. but idk. because the first half of the book felt a little slow for me but as soon as i got to the back half i could NOT put it down!!!!!!!!

i owe this writer (& the rwby writers ofc) my heart and soul and also probably my spleen. first cfvy, now roman & neo???? taking characters i didn’t have any strong feelings about but giving them personality and history and love and making ME love them???? AND WRITING FRIENDS/FAMILY SO WELL???? bro. BRO. i’m losing my MIND

ALSO. very excited for neo’s role in v9 now. and will also probably cry.

like. it would’ve been so easy for them to make roman & neo romantic. especially since there’s only like a 4 year age gap. but they DIDNT they let those two BE EACH OTHERS FIRST PRIORITY AND CLOSEST FRIEND AS FRIENDS AND I AM SO ECSTATIC ABT IT HOLY SHIT

1. How long ago did you start reading fanfiction? Writing fanfiction?

The first fanfiction i read was for The Lunar Chronicles when I was like 11?? and it was 100% on accident and it scarred me because it was a hardcore porn one with a period kink and i was like WHAT IS THIS??? OH MY GOD???? LMAOOOOO i didn’t pick it back up until i was 13-14 and really got into the Fairy Tail fandom. I still reread my favorites on ff.net cause i love them.

As for writing, I wrote a horrible, terrible x-men fanfiction when I was twelve. (my friend still brings it up and REFUSES to delete it so it still gets comments and views, that shit HAUNTS ME ELE.) then tried again for Fairy Tail, posted like two chapters before taking it down cause i wasn’t really feeling it. And then I posted The Intimacy Of Being Understood and here we are.

Omniscient third person. I don’t like it. Like I can understand that it can be a little hard to stay in one person’s perspective but, in my opinion, if you can, it shows how disciplined you are as a writer. Plus, i just get so confused when I go from A’s thoughts to suddenly what B is thinking about A.

When writers use ‘ ‘ instead of “ “. When writers put thoughts in ‘ ‘ instead of just italicizing them. It’s small things but like they just bother me sO MUCH. most of the time i can ignore it and try to enjoy but other times i just dip.

9. Tag 3 fic writers you think are underrated/unknown in the fandom/fanfiction community.

@espoir-et-reves !!!!! THEIR SHISAKU FICS ARE SO SO SO SO SO GOOD. And they have a warring states one going on THAT I AM SO OBSESSED WITH.

@writer168 idk if they’re really “underrated” but THEY HAVE SUCH GREAT FICS ON AO3. Like theres an AU with sakura, kiba, and shino that i reread constantly because it just. is. so. fucking. GOOD. and they posted a new one that i’m YELLING about.

@eggtoasties okay they only have 2 in the naruto fandom (one shisaku which is still ongoing) BUT THEIR WRITING STYLE IS SO NICE?? I ABSOLUTELY LOVE IT. I still go back and reread their shikasaku one cause UGH i can’t get enough. I love it.

Fandoms: Naruto, Soul Eater, The Old Guard, ATLA

Parings: KakaSaku/ShikaSaku/ShiSaku/MultiSaku, SoMa, Joe X Nicky, Zukka

Character: SAKURA. I will read anything with Sakura as the main character and her being a fuckin badass or becoming a badass. I love her.

17. How obsessively do you sit and stare at your fic after you’ve just posted and wait for feedback?

aha.. haha.. well. I check my email like three times an hour. its the first thing i check in the mornings too. I’m literally a whore for praise and literally eat up feedback like its going out of style. I also reread a lot of my stuff because i make so many mistakes and spelling errors, or the spacing is weird oR SOMETHING. plus, literally any and all comments make my day, i go back and reread them cause they just make me feel so tingly and warm like “wow. this person enjoyed the fic/my writing enough to tell me. thats HUGE!”

23. What’s your absolute favorite trope to write?

Angry, feral, bloodied, morally gray women. They aren’t bad guys, they’re probably the good guy, but that doesn’t mean they cant be fucking raging at the world with raw knuckles and blood on their teeth. I just love an angry woman who struggles with her emotions and just has so much inner conflict but that doesn’t take away from her character or badassery, it adds to it.

24. What’s a trope that you’d like to never hear about as long as you live, let alone write?

The fake dating or miscommunication troupe. LIKE GUYS JUST TALK. AND TELL EACH OTHER OMFG. the entire like obliviousness of “nah they dont like me” while the They holds their hand and kisses their cheek. MOFO WHAT. it makes me so impatient and like mad HAAHHAHA. its probably because i’m a pretty confrontational person so seeing stuff like that just “cmon bro, USE YO HEAD.”

28. How do you deal with writing pressure (ie: pressure to update, negative comments, deadlines, etc)?

I have yet to receive a negative comment! Which i was really surprised about tbh. As for deadlines or pressure to update, i just kind of do whatever. I do set goals, but i set them flexible enough that hey, if i can’t do it, that’s okay.

I have a lot of mini goals, like “i want to write this chapter and get it done this week” and then the large goal is “FINISH BY END OF MAY” so i have time.

Actually, now that I think on it, the entire pressure to update thing is probably why i’m waiting until I have all of OL&W written to post it weekly,, cause well. I wouldn’t wanna leave you guys waiting as I tried to write and work out the next chapters and stuff, you know?

34. How much of yourself and your life experiences do you put into your writing? What do you think your readers’ image of you is?

None of my experiences match up to anything I write tbh,,, probably the only thing that is me in my writing is maybe the emotional turmoil? I’m pretty emotionally and mentally mature because from a pretty young age i started forming my own opinions, started looking into the world around us and being like “dude what the fuck this is not what disney advertised”. Then i started talking (read: arguing and debating) with my dad about a lot of it. So, like emotions are kind of hard for me. Like i’m pretty good at controlling them or understanding them, but still. idk its hard to explain ig.

Like the weight of stress, the anger, the sadness. It’s kind of therapeutic to write. Cause i don’t know how to put those feelings to verbal words so writing them really helps.

As for my readers’ image? Probably like some kind of hunched over figure typing away in the dark with a maniacal grin on their face. I honestly don’t know AHHAHAHA but it is fun to think about. I think they’d see me as someone with potential but a lot of room to grow and someone who is imperfect but in a charming way LMAOOOO

38. What does your writing process look like? How chaotic is it on a scale of 1 (very tame) to 10 (you can’t handle this kind of chaos)?

I’m gonna be real honest. Its probably like a 2. I’m a bit of a control freak so I almost always go in chronological order, my writing is pretty linear. Unless, i get bored and jump to one of my fav parts. It's pretty much i sit down, i open the doc, read over my notes and just start writing.

It’s a little boring to explain AHAHAHA but once i get into the groove of things its really fucking great, I can like feel myself in the world, I can feel what i want the characters to, i love it. I catch myself mouthing the words as i type too, which i find hilarious.

39. What’s something about your writing that you pride yourself on?

I rather like how raw my writing is sometimes. Which might sound really vain, but i do like the way i word things or describe things. I love juxtaposition and repetition, or making a good ole circle back to some minute detail that wouldn’t stand out until i repeat it at the end and you’re like “omg” AHAHAHAHA.

Like those little poetic snippets or certain wording i just sit back and go “damn thats kinda good nadia! go you!’ HAHAHA

40. How did you come up with the idea for The Intimacy Of Being Understood?

AAAAA this fic is like my first child, my pride and joy LMAO

so the idea initially came when i was reading some fic, idk if it was even naruto, but i was like “i don't like this, but i do like the rain symbolism.” And I knew i wanted to write something kind of slow paced, something a little sad and angsty, but would show KakaSaku slowly but surely falling in love.

Idk if you’ve noticed but a lot of my fics, the pairings don’t change each other dramatically. They accept each other as they are and then they grow with together. Like that acceptance is something i just love writing, its so subtle, it isn’t something you declare. Its simply “I am going to love you. I am going to love you despite your flaws and faults. I am going to love you unconditionally because I know you, I understand you, and there is nothing you could do to drive me away.”

The fic kind of wrote itself after that first scene. I kept going back to the rain, go being ghosts, and resurrection, and the small epiphanies one gets. I wanted to focus on each character’s growth with each other. They didn’t find light in life because of each other, but with each other. And i think that’s my favorite thing about that fic.

I wanted something raw and real and just something beautiful. I’m actually really proud of it tbh. Would i go back and rewrite/edit it? Oh of course! I’d do that with every single one of my fics, but i’m not gonna cause i think its in its rawest form right now. :))))

1. Why did you choose your URL? - It's one of my favorite LOTR quotes. (Well, technically a song but... you get me.) It makes me feel optimistic.

2. Any side blogs? - Nope. I do have several twitters but now use them only to lurk. For several years I was very active in ARMY fandom (BTS), but now find keeping up on ARMY twitter too time consuming. (And frankly frustrating, lol.)

6. Why did you choose your icon/pfp? - Jung Hoseok is one of the most versatile artists around; he's a natural talent, a hard worker, has the kindest heart and is a pretty, pretty princess. My bb is a style icon! What's not to love about Hoseok? 💜

and after some many more conversations with him, he finally asks you an important question

“ok last question” he laughs, “i know it’s kinda weird but i really like your company and i know we met through a sugar daddy/sugar baby app but would you like.. stay with me..?” he asks cautiously

you stared at him with wide eyes

“i’ll pay for everything you want.. just,, stay or keep me company..?”

you kept quiet, just in shock on what just happened

months has passed and you’ve been with chenle through everything

every time something happened in his company, you were there comforting him or just keeping him sane through out everything

and within those months, you’ve seen different sides of him as well

like the serious side of him– when he’s in business meeting and you’re his plus one

aside from his secretary of course

the funny side of him– when he’s cracking jokes to literally everyone

sometimes he takes days off in the midst of his own company just to pull pranks on his secretary, renjun

and of course, his vulnerable side– when he feels he can’t do what his father left him, the family legacy

there were night where you had to stay over at his place just to make him calm down or just to make sure he’s sleeping or eating well

and tonight was those vulnerable nights of chenle

here you were in his room, on the floor holding his hand as he rants about how his day turned to shit

“it’s just so.. hard you know?” he opens up, “when everyone expects you to follow a certain life but i’m not all about that business shit life! i want to sing or fucking play the piano or do some teenager shit not this paper work life!” his voice cracks at the end of his sentence

“ah shit i’m crying in front of you again” he laughs, wiping the tears

you don’t say anything but held his hand tighter

“thanks y/n.. you’re the best” he smiles down at you

“anything for you, chenle. that’s why i’m here for you right? to keep you company” you smile back

“can you.. come up here with me” chenle motions for you to sit beside him on the bed

you agree and climbed up

chenle sits up awkwardly, staring at you.

“woah this is the first time i had a girl on my bed” he giggles

“then i’m honoured” you laugh

suddenly your phone vibrates multiple times

you take a look and its your brother looking for you

“who is it?” chenle asks

“it’s my brother, he said i should go home” you slowly push yourself from his comfy bed

“no, it’s late. i’ll take you home first thing in the morning”

“i don’t want to be a burden to you lele” you say shyly

“you’re never a burden to me y/n” chenle smiles again

that night, you slept in his very arms for the first time

you wake up earlier that him and decided to prepare breakfast for him

you set the eggs and bacon on the table with orange juice

you smiled at your efforts, hoping he’d like it

chenle woke up in distraught since you were no where in sight

he was in his pajama pants and he rushed downstairs to check if you were still there

and thankfully, you were

you were on the dining table, waiting for him with breakfast ready

“good morning” he grins, face looking brighter than ever

you smile back at him, “good morning to you too, sleepyhead. help yourself with some breakfast”

chenle takes a seat and sips on the orange juice next to him, “did you make this?” he asks

you nod, “for you”

you could’ve swore you saw him blush for a moment there

and with that, you two ate in peace, just enjoying each other’s company

a few days later

you couldn’t make it to chenle’s office since you had classes and it was exam week

chenle was obviously very lonely that week

even his own secretary checked up on him cause he was awfully quiet ever since you came into his life

“so how are you and y/n huh” renjun casually asks chenle who was busy reading papers on the table

“we’re doing great” chenle replies nonchalantly

“are you two going steady now?”

that question made chenle halt to a stop on what he was doing

renjun notices that chenle turned quiet

“i never asked her to be official” chenle gasps, scaring renjun in the process

“wha-”

“renjun hyung can you get me the biggest bouquet bundle you can find” chenle rushes

renjun nods and grabs his ipad, looking for what chenle requested

“fuck.. what did y/n wanted again” chenle asks himself, trying to remember the bag or things you told him about

“call jisung and tell him we’re going to the mall” chenle tells renjun yet again, rushing to the elevator so he could go to the mall with his best buddy

“so what are we buying your special someone again?” jisung asks chenle who was busy pacing around the mall

“y/n said she wanted a bag but i cant remember what was it” chenle tells jisung who just looks as lost as he was

chenle ended up going to every luxury store they had in the mall

like louis vitton, gucci, prada, balenciaga, fendi

you name it he went there and bought one bag each

he even went to some make up stores thanks to jisung’s suggestion

surprisingly he had a girlfriend who was a makeup artist and puts make up on jisung’s face when they have nothing to do

and of course, chenle followed what his best friend suggested

now they were on their way back to your place cause you just texted chenle that you were almost done with your exam

chenle and jisung unload his car and went straight up to your apartment that you shared with your brother

and your brother answers the door

“uh chenle? what are you doing here?” jaemin answers the door

chenle stood there in shock once again, “jaemin hyung? you’re y/n’s brother?” he stares at jaemin confused.

jaemin nods slowly before realization hits him, “you’re the person y/n is seeing?!”

chenle nods uncertainly, slightly offended you never told jaemin about him but quickly shrugs it off.

“well surprise! now can you help us with this? i’m asking y/n to be my girlfriend when she arrives home”

jaemin immediately steps in and helps the two boys

after an hour or so, everything is now set into place

now they were just waiting for you to arrive

chenle stood there with his usual work attire which was a formal suit, holding a big ass bouquet and the paper bags right behind him

“jisung how do i look?!” chenle looks at jisung who was showing him two thumbs up

“dashing bro, she’ll say yes in no time”

and as if on cue, you walked in

and to say you were shocked to see chenle standing there

“lele! what are you doing here?” you covered your mouth in shock as you saw the never ending line of paper bags right behind him and the bouquet he was holding

“i’m here to ask you to be mine” he replies, staring at you once again

“does my brother know you’re here?” you look around your living room and you spot jaemin in the kitchen, watching the entire thing go down

“yeah. why didn’t you tell me he was your brother” chenle pouts, but shakes his head as he hands you the bouquet

chenle clears his throat once again, “na y/n.. would you be my first and last girlfriend?” he closes his eyes tight, waiting for your response

“i would be honoured” you take the bouquet off his hands and jumped into his arms

“about time you asked her” jisung comments in the background

“baby look, i got you some gifts!” chenle puts you down and shows you the abundant amount of things he got you

you smacked him in the chest, “what did i say about you giving me expensive gifts!”

“let me spoil you, please? you showed me how loving someone wholeheartedly is priceless, and i want to return the favor in my own way” chenle shows you his infamous puppy eyes.

“lele you’re making me cry!” you tear up, hidng your face in his neck

“also because i can’t remember the thing you told me you wanted a few days ago so i had to compromise” chenle giggles

you were happy

and he was happy

who knew an app could bring you two together and end up like this

I adore these characters so much bc theyre so real?? Lke we truly watch them grow up. Something about the way 11y/o Ginny covers her face and runs away vs how she acts in the later books just. I adore it.

So this is where I broke my own heart and froze for a solid 15 minutes. I was beginning to write “I hope the twins sang ‘His Eyes Are As Green As A Fresh Pickled Toad’ at their wedding” before I realized that only one twin got to attend Harry & Ginny’s wedding. I trailed off at the S in twins and you can see how shaky my hand got in the writing (i wrote all of this out in a journal)

Riddle’s personality is so well preserved. (and then I remembered that he made his first horcrux that year and THATS why bc this is 16/17 y/o voldy’s soul)

In Riddle’s memory, he stops by the potions room after speaking to Dumbledore on the staircase. Slughorn is teaching that year. Harry says he is stuck outside that room for “what felt like an hour.” Is this where Tom asks about horcruxes? Technically at this point, Myrtle has already been murdered and its been a while but I’m p sure he asks about horcruxes after class one day. But idk. It really seems plausible, and It’s possible that he altered the memory to show Harry...

this is my least favorite book so i just wrote “this is the most boring book. I’m skimming.”

Quidditch mathces are EARLY (im used to sports matches in the evenings but i guess soccer matches are early and such so it makes sense) (my american is showing)

Is sitting at any table allowed? I never understood that and it used to bug me in the movies. Is it only required to sit at your House table during important feasts? Is that how a lot of inter-house relationships come to be?

Fudge’s wardrobe was ROBBED in the movie. A Guide to Seventeen

This lil guide is mostly for @sugarboyuto, but honestly this is for anybody who wants to get into Seventeen. They’re definitely not slept on, but there are a lot of people who are wary of a lot of members, so hopefully this makes it a lil easier.

Despite being called Seventeen, there are 13 members. They did a show while creating the group called Seventeen TV, which you can probably find on YouTube or somewhere on the internet. 24. Ah Christ, I have a shit memory. Uh- All I can remember is kinda sad/angry shit. I’m gonna kinda tell a story that’d been on my head instead, I guess?

So. I go to my University to study Drama performance. We had a teacher who was really fuckin’ cool. He was TOUGH but he was SUCH A SWEETIE! He paired up teams to do a scene together for our final and I got the most ANNOYING person that i’ve met in my LIIIIFFFEEE! Imma call him Tom for this story. So, our professor gives us a scene that’s tense because my character’s dad died but HIS character was pretty horny for mine. and Eventually my character starts to be okay with it. Fucking christ, it was SO uncomfy. The annoying ass Tom fucking bitched and whines at me for not showing up once to one of our rehearsals (I was sick) and DEMANDED A FUCKING DOCTORS NOTE. LIKE?? I DON’T OWE YOU CRAP, BRO! And because how angry and unsettled I was around him, It was EXTRA hard to memorize my lines. And then the day came where we had to perform ... AND I HAD TO CARRY THAT ASSHOLE THROUGH THE ENTIRE SCENE BECAUSE HE FORGOT HIS FUCKING LIIIIIIINNEEESSSS. I was SO tempted to deck him right then and there, jesus FUCKING christ.

Hello naughty children, it’s time for Nissa’s Opinions

Coming in RIGHT under the wire for October book club, but still. I have read the reboggles I could find on T’s tag (bc tumblr search is what it is), and now it’s my turn.

General Questions:

1 - What did you like best / least?

I liked the worldbuilding a lot - I want to know more about the Reaches and the Travelers and why everything is made of wood in Kolonya?? Least... we will get to lol

2 - Would you read more by this author?

mmmmmmmmmmaybe. Like I want to know wtf happened, but I’m also still pretty mad about the ending. We shall see.

3 (a) - If this story followed a different character’s POV, who would you pick and why?

tbh the last thing this book needs is more POVs

3 (b) - Did you like how the three different sister’s POV was used to push the narrative forward? Did it make your reading experience more or less enjoyable?

idk, it was a little slow for my tastes. I did like that the girls all had different perspectives, but I wish they’d had more different personalities. Like Ren and Akeylah are the same person, just brought up with different abuse. And if Zofi has a personality beyond anger, she’s probably the same, too.

4 - What scene stuck with you the most?

I really liked the first time Ren and Zofi confronted Akeylah in the library - it was kinda “did we just become best friends?! YUP!” but also FINALLY gave them a team vibe and distinct specialties.

5 - What kind of lingering questions were you left with (besides the obvious cliffhanger WHY DID YOU DO THAT TO ME ELLEN)

literally what was the point of this being its own book if the single main conflict wasn’t actually resolved???

6 (a) - Could you relate to the characters & their story arcs?

Meh. I mean, a little bit? But overall I didn’t find them terribly relatable.

6 (b) - How do you feel about each character’s ending?

WHAT. ENDING.

7 - Were there times you disagreed with a character’s actions / would have done something different in their shoes?

YES MANY.

8 - Were you rooting for any character or pairing in particular?

I wanted to like Akeylah best bc she seems really sincere and genuine, BUT then suddenly all of her “I’m a secret genius” calculating stuff comes up and it’s a little tough to reconcile those things. I liked each of the girls okay, but I didn’t feel like there was a clear answer to who should rule (aside from Ren’s musing about all 3 of them, maybe).

9 - Do you picture any specific fancasts when reading the book?

The only one I have any clear idea what she looks like is Akeylah, but I can’t think of anyone who looks like that, you know? I think of Zofi as looking like an angry Ice Climber from Smash Bros. And like...idk maybe Letitia Wright for Ren? Maybe Lupita Nyong’o or Gugu Raw for Rozalind, unless she’s supposed to be the girls’ age, then somebody younger, I guess? Idk.

Story Specific Questions:

11 - Did you enjoy how each girl’s secret was teased out? Do you like when authors slow-roll this kind of information?

I do like a slow rollout (”who taught him ‘rollout’?!”), I think there’s a lot to be said for setting readers loose in medias res, BUT I also think it wasn’t handled amazingly here - idk maybe it’s just me, but I felt like it was sort of stage-whispering. Like “oh no I hope no one guesses my TERRIBLE SECRET!!! I would be in SO MUCH trouble!!” It just felt very obvious to me, although the secrets themselves weren’t obvious (the first time we learned about them).

12 - Do you think each character was fleshed out sufficiently, such that you had a sense of the different personality for each sister?

Not really? Kind of. An attempt was made with the girls, but basically no one else got any dimension whatsoever.

13 - Do you have guesses on who the blackmailer is?

Not really, bc this book broke every rule of how to write an engaging mystery. Like literally the only people who could POSSIBLY be it from the information we have are Rozalind, Vidal, and Andros, none of which really make sense given everything else, but like???? I guess Rozalind is my best guess bc she was acting kinda sus re: the acolyte etc. But I think that would be a bad choice unless a lot of other things change between now and that reveal.

14 - Was Yasmin a believable antagonist to you?

Like. I thought she was SCREAMINGLY obviously a red herring the entire book. She was brusque with the girls, and there was some weirdness in the first scene where the girls meet the king where I thought maybe she was possessing him, but that’s obviously just the weird mind link thing they did, and that’s it. Like being a bitch isn’t illegal.

15 - Do you think the daughters’ secrets were defensible actions?

Kinda? Like, definitely understandable, but like, is murder ever defensible? Ren had no reason to suspect her information would be used the way it was (whether or not Danton knew is something I’m not convinced on either way), Akeylah had no reason to believe she wasn’t cursing the man she fully expected to kill her (although MAYBE she should have paid closer attention during the cursing itself?? Like, the distance seems like it should have played a role in how hard it was to find “her father”), and Zofi perhaps overreacted, but used what seemed like appropriate force at the time in defense of another’s life (or rather she couldn’t/didn’t want to think of a way to simply restrain or incapacitate Nicolen, so stabby stabby). Was it stupid? Yes, for all of them. But they’re children (are they 18? I forget how old they’re supposed to be. Also, why are they the same age, if they are? was that just Andros’s Good Fuckin Year?)

16 - How do you feel about this unique system of magic?

WEIRD. I NEED MORE INFORMATION. WHY does the blood have to be drawn? Where does it go? What is the scarring situation with these people? What about the SHARDS OF GLASS permanently embedded in Zofi’s legs? Speaking of which, how the FUCK are Travelers out here hand-blowing glass in a mobile way??? That’s not a pick-up-and-carry craft! What’s the cooldown period for tithing? Why is it CALLED tithing? Who are you tithing TO? What negative effects are there for tithing for too long? Zofi mentions that they exist, but this is never explained. I feel like after all her reading, Akeylah should be able to answer these questions for me. BUT SHE DIDN’T.

17 - Was the theme of racism sufficiently handled?

BAD. VERY BAD. It was like the ending of Cars in that it retroactively ruined a lot of the book for me. NOTHING was accomplished in this ENTIRE book WHY
