After watching the first episode of The Idol, I could already see some aspects of the “4 steps of cult recrutament” in Joss and Tedros’ relationship:
Picking the right target:  Research has shown that the people who are the most susceptible to recruitment are stressed, emotionally vulnerable, have tenuous or no family connections, or are living in adverse socioeconomic conditions.
Joss is said to have had a nervous breakdown and the loss of her mother doesnt help much.
Love-bombing: Having identified a stressed, emotionally vulnerable target, cults flood that person with affection, flattery, and validation. Cult awareness educator Ronald N. Loomis described this practice on college campuses as involving “a recruiter approaching the student and doing everything [they] can to make the student feel special and unique. They’re quickly trying to convey the message that I am your new best friend. And they will fake mutual interests in order to give the impression that they share many things in common.”
In the last scene of the first episode, Joss shows Tedros her new song, which she’s not confident in it’s potencional, that the song is too superficial. He assures her that the song is good but doesn't think she is confident enough to sing it and it's only after she "accepts" his invitation (the asphyxiation part) that he says she will be able to sing the song
Isolation:  Once they’ve enticed a recruit with approval or the promise of some fulfilling understanding of the universe, cultists then work to isolate the recruit. Often, this takes the form of a weekend retreat, where the recruit is immersed in the cult’s ideology over the course of a few days. Not only are recruits physically isolated from friends and family members who might otherwise provide a reality check, but cults often isolate recruits from outside information.
Joss already feels like it. The people around her all work for her and lie to her. In the trailer we see that Dyanne, someone who Joss is jealous cuz she “wishes she could dance like her”, is going to sign with Joss’ label. I don’t think they are going to make Jennie’s character a full villain (The Weeknd’s character is obviously the main villain, the summaries confirm it) but I believe Tedros is going to take this as a opportunity to isolate Joss futhermore from her staff.
Keeping control:  After convincing you that they’re the best friends you’ve ever had and bombarding you with the cult’s ideology, the cultists’ next job is to make sure they hang on to you. There’s a variety of techniques they can use to accomplish this, but these usually involve iteratively subjecting the cult recruit to terror and love.
Again, back to the last scene in the first episode. Tedros even mentions Joss’ deceased mother during the scene, something that she is still getting over it. That was a emoticional manipulating so he could recruit and control her.
I actually believe that was Amy Seimetz inicial intentions for the plot. Sam Levinson is an awful person but as far as I know he wasn’t the one who started with the idea. Seimetz wanted to show the dark side of fame, Levinson only a dark side.
I’m happy that people are not seeing it as a romantic relationship, but different from many I feel that, if done right, those kind of emotional maniputation could be made for TV and film, show that there are people like this in this world, that not everything is sugar and sweet, but also show that those people are also awful. Show the side that they let the victim see and then show their true form. Again, IF done right, something I don’t think Sam Levi will ever do. I hope that with time, The Weeknd’s character is shown like that. That they dont just sugarcoat his relationship with Joss.
Better show something fictional than fictionaze some real tragedy and have people romanticize it like some did with Dahmer.

Cinema Starview Presents: The Idol…? 👎🏽
Tumblr media
So, I’ve watched 3 episodes and have officially decided to stop watching. The reviews and critics of the show are right, but over exaggerate the narrative they’re trying to paint by sounding like prudes.
The series follows Jocelyn, an aspiring pop star, trying to have a comeback after suffering from a nervous breakdown, and the death of her abusive mother. These episodes revolve around Joce trying to reclaim her title as the sexiest pop star in America. With the hectic celebrity life, she begins a complex relationship with Tedros, a self-help guru and the head of a contemporary cult.
Tumblr media
I won’t disagree with the fact that it DOES showcases the overly sexual stuff, but it’s not extreme, it’s just annoying, not needed and doesn’t move the plot forward. It’s just there for the ratchet sake of our current hyper-sexualized culture and overexposure of the female body. If there’s gonna be nudity, it should be equal nudity or none at all.
This show has honestly just confirmed that Sam Levinson definitely needs to be investigated in the future for how much he over sexualizes his white female characters. I won’t be surprised if Euphoria gets cancelled because of his terrible erotic writing. I think this show HAS ruined the mystique of The Weeknd by showcasing how he doesn’t care about women stories. I never knew he was this pretentious as he is. Lily Rose Depp is the only grace I can give this show, but she doesn’t save the show at all.
Tumblr media
Also, we need to trash the entire narrative of the pop star with trauma, cause it never works the way it should and it’s always tying back to the negative press Britney Spears has received over the years. She needs a break, and shouldn’t be used for plot conveniency to progress a storyline about the darkness of Hollyweird.
I only kept coming back for Moses Sumney and they barely show Jennie, so K-POP stans were used and pandered to. Overall, I’m not watching or finishing the rest of this show.
SCORE: 2/10 ⭐️
(Please tip if you liked this review, tipping is a great source of revenue for a small artist & blogger such as myself 🤍)

The Idol (prod. Sam Levinson).
HBO’s salacious drama series about a troubled pop star (Lily-Rose Depp) recovering from a nervous breakdown and becoming seduced by a sinister, cult-like self-help guru and talent scout (played strangely by co-creator Abel “The Weekend” Tesfaye) is as enthralling as it is laughably silly. Levinson’s superficial exploration of sexual gratification through trauma and the luridness of the music industry never quite connects and feels more exploitative for little reason without every being particularly sexy or tawdry.

MOVE IN? WHAT THE FUCK
chloe can play and sang baby
WHERE DID THE BLACK GIRL GO????
YES HARMONY
oh poor leia
but like seriously WHERE DID THE FUCKING BLACK GIRL GO?????????
my overall opinion of the episode: way better than the first. I didn't feel that it was dragging on at any point. the writing is still a little iffy, although I understand why some characters say certain things. Abel, babe, either the acting ain't it bc the script is off or he just can't act. Like there were points were I liked his acting, but then he'd do something that just deducted 10 points for me. Not to mention that last scene when they were at Jocelyn's house and he started talking dirty to her, I wanted to throw myself out the window bc it was giving Wattpad/AO3 vibes and not in a good way. Overall, I give this episode a 7/10. Do with that what you will.

I would love your opinion too but careful anon were particularly rude to a blog https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/tv/tv-features/euphoria-tragedy-trauma-1235953050/
So much great gossip here! Thanks.
While Levinson could be generous and kind, he also had a tendency to become overwhelmed and angry. “Sam was so stressful to everyone around him. He is a person who needs to be handled,” says a source who worked on a Levinson-Turen production. His obsessiveness meant he has “no off button. He would shoot all night, if he could. He always wants to push boundaries and shock people a little bit. He needs someone to curate his thoughts and ideas.”
Here’s the thing. Sam’s not very good at directing and not good at all at writing. He’s up all night doing…what exactly? Thinking up some cuckoo plotlines? Are boobs “shocking”? Why is anyone “handling” this mid nepo maniac? The biggest mystery to me is who is wasting HBO’s money and why?
Zendaya, once such a close Levinson acolyte that she frequently hung out at his house, had cooled toward the mercurial filmmaker. Another insider says that as she pulled away, Levinson began to resent her.
Woohoo 🥳 Get out of that toxic relationship, girlie.
Zendaya was so perturbed that she asked for a meeting with HBO’s Bloys and Orsi, demanding to know why the network allowed Levinson to turn his attention to another show — an HBO show, no less — with Euphoria hanging in the balance.
Sources say her unhappiness deepened in March 2023, after Rolling Stone published a blistering article alleging that with Levinson at the helm, production on The Idol had gone “disgustingly, disturbingly off the rails” — chaotic and overbudget, with a toxic work environment. The show told the story of a fading pop star, played by Lily-Rose Depp, who becomes ensnared in a masochistic relationship with cult leader Tedros, played by The Weeknd. According to Rolling Stone, crewmembers were calling the series “sexual torture porn” featuring the “rape fantasy” of a “toxic man.”
Zendaya had nothing to do with The Idol but was swept up in fan backlash for a project she hadn’t wanted Levinson to take on in the first place. Sources note that she was already a seasoned actress when she appeared in Euphoria at 22, and she closely tracks the mood on social media. “Her image is pristine,” says an executive who has dealt with her. “And fans were turning against Sam,” urging Zendaya to distance herself.
Yes, absolutely. Zendaya used to routinely praise Sam and his genius and credit him for her success. Looking back it was probably a mistake to entwine her reputation with that of such an unstable, narcissistic, man-child. Love that she went over his head to HBO. To me, that sounds like a good professional move rather than the few-boundaries, weirdly personal relationship with Sam that she’s been trying to manage for years prior. Next step — and she’s so closeeee — is just to walk away.
Zendaya has told HBO executives that she doesn’t want Ashley Levinson to be the only executive producer on season three.
Oh Ashley Levinson sounds lovely 😬 Sounds like she’s the one who’s talking shit about Zendaya—
A source close to Levinson blamed Zendaya for dragging her feet with an eye toward a burgeoning film career that would soon include not only the studio franchises Spider-Man and Dune, but Luca Guadagnino’s Cannes entry Challengers.
And the rest is stuff we already knew, I think. Sam’s a self-important control freak who steals ideas from other people and enshitifies them. He’s a tornado of toxicity.
Sounds like Zendaya is on to him!🤞🏼

I don't know how many people kept up with this, but if you're on the internet you probably know about it, but there's a new Sam Levinson TV series that has been bothering a lot of people. It's called The Idol, and features Johnny Depp's daughter and The Weeknd, the former being this super popular singer and the latter as the cult leader who brainwashes Lily Rose into doing humiliating sex stuff with him with the excuse that it'll make her better at her job.
Now… the existence of this show bothers me a lot, and I know I'm not the only one, but while I can't attest to what others think regarding fiction, I know that I'm absolutely not one of those people who think that any depiction of sexual assault should be banned, or that kink has no place on TV, or that all sex scenes must advance the plot.
There's just something, in how those shows and movies are set up, that makes it all feel so exploitative and horrible in a way that, in fics, never seems to be.
Like... I'm a huge fan of Miss_Lv, who is definitely a "dead dove" author, and yet there's just something that makes me want to throw up at the idea that Sam Levinson shot a scene in which a bunch of guys (or maybe it was just The Weeknd, idk) come on Lily Rose's face and The Weeknd posts a pic of it on Twitter and makes it go viral with the tag #humancumsock.
I guess it's because it's acted out by real people, and there's a huge difference between "I'm imagining all of these characters doing these things in my head" and "These characters are played by actual people," but the amount of disgust the idea of seeing The Weeknd push an egg in Lily Rose's vagina and tell her that, if she cracks/drops it, he's not going to rape her is almost inexpressible while, if a fandom friend pitched me with this idea, I would simply reply with "That stuff makes no sense, but ok, I guess. Just good luck finding the tag for it."
My other best idea, as to why this whole series disgusts me so much, is that PR made Lily Rose go around interviews saying that she felt so empowered by the series, which is the usual crap that is pasted and copied from woman to woman whenever they act in a series in which their role is that of personality void human flashlight and doesn't really mean anything at all. It's that, and the fact that the series was supposed to be a feminist view on the world of celebritydom and Hollywood, but then the female director was fired in favor of hiring Levinson because The Weeknd threw a tantrum about the show being too focused on the female aspect of the question, rather than putting the spotlight on him.
I don't know, I feel like I'm the only one who's been conflicted about this series (which I have no intention of watching legally nor by pirating it, because it disgusts me to the bone) and wanted to know if someone else thought the same, or if there was no moral/interior conflict upon reading all the articles written by the exploitation of the female cast and how rape is depicted.
--
I hadn't even heard about it. I guess I haven't been watching much TV lately.
I think a lot of sexually transgressive media is made by people who, frankly, don't know how to execute something like that in a safe or self-aware way. You definitely do see examples where the actors say they were cool with it and I believe them, but the ones I can recall have mostly been indie movies or stuff from Europe with very different production dynamics.
I met a lady in L.A. who works as a... man, I can't even remember the term, but she's the person on set who works with the actors before a sex scene to figure out their limits and be a buffer between them and the director. For indie films, the usual procedure is to kick 99% of the crew off the set so the actors only have to deal with each other, the director, and the camera person.
I think live action media about weird sex stuff is harder to do safely and ethically than a written work is, but it can be done. That doesn't mean they did a good job in this case though.

I thought The Idol couldn’t sink any lower – then I saw the ending
A gross twist and a false rape accusation sees The Weeknd and Sam Levinson’s empty psychodrama plumb new depths
July 3, 2023 1:45 pm(Updated 6:44 pm)
After clashing with her team over her album's first single, Jocelyn pushes herself to the limit on the set of her new music video, while Nikki sees potential in backup dancer Dyanne; Tedros introduces Jocelyn and Leia to Izaak and Chloe.
Lily-Rose Depp as Jocelyn (Photo: HBO)
You don’t have to have seen a second of The Idol to understand its vibe. Grainy images from the drama – created by the man behind Euphoria, Sam Levinson, and Abel Tesfaye, better known as popstar The Weeknd – show Lily-Rose Depp as singer Jocelyn, always scantily clad, either hanging off the arm of her Svengali, Tedros (Tesfaye, whose performance is legions below sub-par) or looking longingly, despondently, dead-eyed into the middle distance. LA sunshine, sprawling mansions, sex, grit, bodies (but only women’s bodies). You get the gist.
After five episodes, The Idol has proved itself to have little substance beyond those murky aesthetics. Between horrendously cringe sex scenes, endless dance numbers designed to show off Jocelyn’s writhing limbs and bickering between her management and record label execs (the drama’s saving grace, if it has one, along with Depp’s brilliant performance), we’ve watched Tedros manipulate Jocelyn and his troupe of wannabes for power and sex. He is the show’s villain with not one redeeming quality.
But the last in the series is, shockingly, asking us to feel sorry for Tedros. The man who beat Jocelyn with the hairbrush – her mum used to hit her with – during a bondage session, the man who was revealed to have multiple domestic violence charges against him, the man who tortured Jocelyn’s creative director with an electric dog collar. How do the “sick and twisted minds” (as advertised by the drama’s promo material) of Sam Levinson and Abel Tesfaye turn Tedros into – in Levinson’s own words – “the victim”? By making Jocelyn the bad guy, of course.
While fighting for the upper hand in her relationship with Tedros, Jocelyn becomes determined to introduce her new persona to the world; Jocelyn's team discusses her increasing involvement with Tedros and his inner circle.
Abel Tesfaye as Tedros and Lily-Rose Depp as Jocelyn (Photo: HBO)
A twist reveals (or rather, suggests – telling a succinct story isn’t one of The Idol’s strong points) that Jocelyn has been aware of Tedros’s machinations this whole time, using him to further her career. Pissed off after finding out that their entire relationship was engineered with the help of her backup dancer Dyanne (Blackpink’s Jennie Kim) and now that she’s got what she wants from him – a new sound, new supporting acts, her tour secured – she can discard him: “You’ve served your purpose,” she cuts. “I’m done with you.”
Jocelyn’s transformation from a sympathetic, preyed upon young woman to a scheming, calculating bitch is misogyny 101. Rejection, or even mere disinterest, is kryptonite to sexist men who, like Tedros, believe their power over women is both a God-given right and beyond reproach. It’s the main thread of thinking behind the incel subculture, a group of men who are “involuntary celibate” and blame women for their lack of intimate relationships. The mass murders carried out by some incels – including Elliot Rodger, who killed six people and injured 14 others in California in 2014 – have been incited, the killers said, by being rejected by women. It’s a dangerous, harmful ideology to use as a plot point in a TV show driven by chauvinistic values.
As is the inclusion of a false rape allegation against Jocelyn’s ex-boyfriend, Rob (Karl Glusman), arranged by Tedros to get him out of her life. Fake accusations do of course happen, but they are entirely less common than the media would have us believe: only 3 to 4 per cent of rape allegations in the UK are thought to be entirely fabricated. Add it to the gross list of anti-women, misogynistic sentiment The Idol has pedalled for the past five weeks.

While Tedros was banished from Jocelyn’s life, Vanity Fair journalist Talia (Hari Nef) published an article about him, detailing his sordid past and creepy cult leading him to lose his nightclub. Again, we’re supposed to feel sorry for the bloke, who has been tricked by a woman who played him at his own game, but – like most stories of “cancel culture” – all I can see is a man having to deal with the consequences of his own actions. If you ask me, he’s got off lightly.
Still, Tedros turns up to the stadium where Jocelyn will open her new tour. Midway through the performance (shot at LA’s SoFi stadium, using The Weeknd’s real fans at one of his shows), Jocelyn brings him out on stage, snogging him for all to see before whispering in his ear: “You’re mine forever. Now, go stand over there.” Does it make sense? Not at all! Does it make Jocelyn look just as bad as Tedros and, he, in return, the victim? You bet.
This final episode tells us everything we need to know about how The Idol sees women: manipulative and scheming, but also malleable and objects of desire. It’s a grossly oversimplified version of abuse, a vague plot point and excuse to see Lily-Rose Depp on her knees as opposed to an all-too-familiar feature of fame that deserves a needling.
There’s been no word on whether HBO has decided to renew the series, but this confusing, stupid ending certainly leaves the door open for Jocelyn and Tedros’s messy games to continue. It would be to the benefit of everyone – especially The Weeknd, whose reputation is hanging on by a thread – if this cycle of abuse came to an end.

The Idol premieres today
The Idol, the new TV series from Abel "The Weeknd" Tesfaye, Reza Fahim, and Sam Levinson, is out today.
After a nervous breakdown derailed Jocelyn’s (Lily-Rose Depp) last tour, she’s determined to claim her rightful status as the greatest and sexiest pop star in America. Her passions are reignited by Tedros (Abel “The Weeknd” Tesfaye), a nightclub impresario with a sordid past. Will her romantic awakening take her to glorious new heights or the deepest and darkest depths of her soul?

LILY-ROSE DEPP
The full interview of Troye where he talks about Lily’s work and friendship
“As it turns out, Tesfaye and Levinson had tapped Sivan to play Xander, best friend to Lily-Rose Depp’s aspiring pop idol Jocelyn. Sivan had never met Depp before, but two weeks later they began a year’s worth of filming that seems to have bonded them together for life. ‘She’s one of my best friends,’ says Sivan. ‘I feel like we sort of went through high school together because we were seeing each other every day. We just became inseparable, basically.’
“While Sivan has been sworn to secrecy over details surrounding the series, which sees Jocelyn form a relationship with a cult leader named Tedros, played by Tesfaye, he will say that spending so much time on set made him question whether he’s cut out for the actor’s life. ‘Lily is obsessed with acting,’ he says. ‘It’s all she thinks about. It’s all she talks about. She lives and breathes it, sort of the way that I feel about music. That made me think: “Oh shit, should I be working harder at this?” Maybe there’s a little bit of guilt because I don’t feel I can give acting everything. I’m not gonna say no if something comes around that I’m excited about, but am I ever gonna quit music to be a full-time actor? No.’”
