In 1888 Holland, the graves of a Catholic woman and her Protestant husband share a sad story. Colonel Jacobus Warnerus Constantinus van Gorkum, a member of the Dutch Cavalry, was laid to rest on the Protestant side of the Roermond Kapel cemetery in Limburg, Netherlands. In contrast, his wife, Lady Josephina Carlina Petronela Hubertina van Aefferden, found her final resting place on the Catholic side.

Despite this religious division, this devoted couple, who were married in 1842, managed to come together even in death. Their graves are marked by two clasped hands, symbolizing their enduring connection that transcended the religious divide.

A Stolen 2,000-year-old Pompeii Marble Relief Sculpture Found in Belgium

An important marble relief depicting the earthquake of 62 AD, stolen from the ruins of ancient Pompeii in Italy in 1975, was found in a family home in the quiet village of Herzele in Belgium’s East Flanders region.

For 50 years, the ancient marble artifact has been installed in a wall lining the staircase leading down to the basement. The homeowner’s son, Geert de Temmerman, explained that the mini monument had been brought back from Pompeii as a souvenir five decades ago.

On a family vacation to Italy, Geert de Temmerman’s father was offered the artwork by an anonymous man who fled the scene as soon as the deal was over. Not realizing the importance of the object, the family installed it in their house as a decorative feature.

Curiosity about the marble’s worth prompted the family to seek professional assistance as they prepared to sell their home. The Gallo-Roman Museum in Tongeren (Limburg) experts were astounded to discover its authenticity.

The marble relief sculpture, which dates from around 62 C.E., is a narrow strip depicting an earthquake that occurred that same year. Most notably, it depicts the Pompeii gates collapsing. The marble relief had been stolen on July 14th, 1975, from the house of banker L. Caecilius Iucundus where it originally hung above the atrium altar.

The head of exhibitions at the Gallo-Roman Museum, Bart Demarsin, confirmed that the relief matched another piece depicting the same earthquake.

“It closely corresponds to the original piece that we recognize from the photos,” confirmed Bart Demarsin, the museum’s head of exhibitions, speaking to VRT NWS. “That piece corresponds to a similar piece, which also depicts buildings that collapsed during that earthquake.”

The marble will undergo further research to confirm its authenticity, after which it can be reunited with its companion piece in Pompeii’s Antiquarium.

“It’s the cultural heritage from Pompeii, and it belongs there,” said An Christiaens, deputy mayor of culture for the local city of Tongeren.

Local police opened an investigation into how this pilfered treasure ended up in a Belgian home after the artifact was identified. Meanwhile, the family expressed hope for potential compensation, citing the long-term preservation of the artifact.

Het urnenveld Boshoverheide is de grootste urnenveldsite in Noordwest Europa. Er liggen naar schatting 3100 grafheuvels die komen uit de Bronstijd 4500 jaar geleden. Toch kennen veel mensen het urnenveldcomplex niet. Om het urnenveld bij een groter publiek bekend te maken, heeft de gemeente Weert samen met Grenspark Kempen~Broek een subsidie van €125.000,- aangevraagd bij Interreg VI Vlaanderen – Nederland. De Provincie Limburg stelt €207.450,- beschikbaar. Samenwerking met de regio De subsidieaanvraag voor het urnenveld Boshoverheide is onderdeel van een grotere aanvraag voor de Limburgse grensstreek van Weert tot Maastricht. Hiermee haalt de grensregio zo’n 1,5 miljoen Europese middelen binnen voor verschillende projecten in het gebied. Geschiedenis urnenveld zichtbaar maken Met de binnengehaalde subsidies willen de gemeente en Grenspark Kempen~Broek het complex beter toegankelijk maken en meer van de geschiedenis laten zien. In het plan worden onder andere de parkeerplaats heringericht en informatie voorzieningen geplaatst. Denk hierbij aan informatieborden en een reconstructie van een grafheuvel, zodat bezoekers kunnen zien hoe deze zijn opgebouwd. Wethouder Recreatie en Toerisme Martijn van den Heuvel: “Het urnenveld is een van de best bewaarde geheimen in onze gemeente. Door dit project ontsluiten we dit geheim voor een groter publiek.” Educatieprogramma Om het verhaal voor een breed publiek kenbaar te maken, wordt een informatie- en educatieprogramma uitgewerkt. Hiervoor wordt samen met Natuur- en Milieucentrum IJzeren Man en Museum W een pakket ontwikkeld. Daarnaast wordt er gewerkt aan een Suske en Wiske strip, waarin het verhaal van het urnenveld op een originele manier verteld kan worden. Wethouder Cultuurhistorie & Erfgoed Suzanne Winters: “We willen mensen meenemen in de geschiedenis van deze bijzondere plek. Door verhalen te delen en zichtbaar te maken wat er onder de grond ligt, komt deze plek weer tot leven.” Vervolg van het traject De gemeente wil in totaal zo’n €400.000,- euro investeren in het gebied. Nu de verkregen subsidies concreet zijn, wordt gewerkt aan het verkrijgen van de gemeentelijke cofinanciering. Voor de verdere uitwerking en realisatie van het project gaat de gemeente samenwerken met Grenspark Kempen~Broek, Museum W, Stadsgidsen, Natuur- en Milieucentrum de IJzeren Man, belangenorganisaties en ondernemers in de omgeving. Omdat het urnenveld een beschermd Rijksmonument is en in Natura2000 gebied ligt, zijn er verschillende vergunningen van Defensie en de Rijksdienst voor Cultureel Erfgoed nodig. Deze procedures nemen enige tijd in beslag. Het streven is om de vernieuwde site in het voorjaar van 2025 feestelijk te kunnen openen.

where is better to visit? im interested

it depends on what you're looking for! i really like utrecht, amersfoort and zwolle, if you still want a city vibe. leeuwarden is really pretty too, and so is groningen. if you wanna see some nature, the veluwe is a really pretty area, and places like apeldoorn are still big enough cities but also have amazing nature close to them. we've also got many beautiful museums, like the teylers museum in haarlem, kröller müller in arnhem, or the mauritshuis in den haag if you're more into art. the islands (waddeneilanden) are also worth a visit, you can visit most of them from noord holland or friesland. i haven't really been to the south very often, so i don't have many recommendations for that region (zeeland, noord brabant, limburg) but i know limburg has beautiful places for hiking, zeeland has great beaches and the big cities in brabant like eindhoven or breda are also very nice! plus the biggest theme park of the netherlands, de efteling, is also in brabant, i love that place a lot too. oh and my favourite zoo of our country, gaiazoo, is in limburg!

this got much longer than i expected lmao but yeah there is so so much to do here, even the touristy stuff like the kinderdijk is cool, and of course amsterdam is still worth a visit (i am in love w the museums there) but it's definitely not the only stop to consider :)
