Little Dragon: Slugs of Love Opening with an immediately catchy bass line, Little Dragon’s “Slugs of Love” is a jaunty, sparkly, ’80s-tinged bop. The Swedish indie-pop band says in a statement, “Did you know that Leopard Slugs perform a very sensual and acrobatic dance, an exchange between two individuals carrying the same set of reproduction systems? Maybe we are all yearning for love and ecstasy, as we turn more sluggish … https://coolhunting.com/culture/little-dragon-slugs-of-love/

Hiya, I like your blog and your overall style. What music do you listen to?
Hey there! Thank you so much!! This is such a good question, and a hard one to answer at that. Good job ;)
I listen to a little bit of anything and everything. For context, I grew up in the deep south and lived in a jazz city for some time, so... some of these things are not like the other (lol).
Hozier, Sleeping At Last, and Richy Mitch & The Coalminers are my all-time favorite music artists.
Indie folk/rock, like forest ranger in the mountains vibe, this is definitely my biggest category (Hozier, The Paper Kites, Fleet Foxes, Richy Mitch & The Coalminers, Lord Huron, Gregory Alan Isakov, Caamp)
Calm indie alternative in a poetry-writing and introspective mood (Sleeping At Last, John Vincent III, Novo Amor, Amber Run, Radical Face, Daughter)
Alternative rock/indie alternative rock (flipturn, Rainbow Kitten Surprise, Florence & The Machine, Fleetwood Mac, The Orion Experience, alt-j, Greta Van Fleet)
Modern-pop or 2000s pop (MARINA, Coldplay, Taylor Swift, Imagine Dragons, Lady Gaga, Glass Animals, BøRNS, Fall Out Boy, Lorde, Chappell Roan, Macklemore, Pitbull, Rihannna)
Folk country or bluegrass (Watchhouse, Jimmy Buffett, Zac Brown Band, Johnny Cash, Zach Bryan, Colter Wall, Tyler Childers)
Female rage and hyper-pop mania vibes (also MARINA, Paris Paloma, Olivia Rodrigo, Mother Mother, AURORA, The Crane Wives, Grimes)
"I grew up in jazz culture" (Count Basie, Stevie Wonder, Sonny Rollins, Caro Emerald, Miles Davis, Weather Report)
2000-2010s radio EDM/Dance (Calvin Harris, Martin Garrix, Caravan Palace, Axwell, Empire of the Sun, David Guetta, Swedish House Mafia)
Orchestral or soundtrack for when I'm writing in my fantasy series (John Powell, Woodkid, The Amazing Devil, Hans Zimmer, Two Steps from Hell, The Oh Hellos, Cody Fry, The Family Crest)
60s/70s/80s pop bops (ABBA, Elton John, Queen, Franki Valli & The Four Seasons, Indigo Girls, Glen Campbell, The Dream Academy, Bob Dylan, The Cranberries)

Metalocalypse Characters & What Their Tumblr Blogs Would Look Like
Masterlist
Post Type: Headcanons
Warnings: None
A/N: idk man im bored
======
Nathan:
Mostly follows tags he deems "brutal"
Doesn't really post his own stuff much, but reblogs dark and gritty aesthetic pictures
Enjoys reading original poems and stories from Tumblr writers
Follows tags like DnD, Fantasy, etc
Pickles:
Reblogs heritage posts mostly
Probably follows a lot of gritty tags and reblogs mood boards
His blog is a mess (like my main blog)
Also follows all his bandmates
Cries when he sees everyone saying they were born in the wrong generation because they wanted to see SnB in their prime
Skwisgaar:
He has two blogs. His main blog is all aesthetic pictures and mood boards while his second blog is skincare and haircare tips
He posts in both English and Swedish (his English is slightly better than Toki's, but not by very much)
Aside from aesthetic pictures, he's posted a lot on dragons
Secretly adores Toki's cat pictures
Toki:
You already know this guy posts/reblogs cats (and cute birbs)
He also might post a lot in Norwegian (him typing anything in English is adorable, he's trying)
Follows his bandmates
Probably also follows the cottagecore tag
Murderface:
Reads what little fanfiction there is about himself
Actually really adores Tumblr, but would never say it
Will join in on the discourse
Reblogs a lot of horror and history kinds of stuff
Charles:
Only has Tumblr because of the band
Reblogs plant care tips
Also follows everyone else
Will reblog Toki's cat pictures and gets a chuckle out of Pickles' reblogs
Knubbler:
Also a cat post enjoyer
He's probably akin to a Tumblr Hipster TM and a Tumblr Veteran
Remembers 2013-2015 Tumblr fondly
His blog is mostly pictures of cats and him finding out new stuff about his eyes ("you're never gonna believe what i found out my eyes can do! *does something weird* SEE?!")
Isn't even Tumblr famous from Dethklok, he's Tumblr famous for his story on how he lost his eyes
Magnus:
Either one of two things: he runs a Dethklok hate page (pre-doomstar) or he runs a vent blog (post-doomstar)
In the case of a vent blog, he mostly vents through music and posts mostly guitar covers of miscellaneous songs and takes requests. The first song he posts is an entirely instrumental song that takes you through a whirlwind of emotions and is based entirely off of him joining Dethklok, being kicked, seeking revenge, failing, and healing (aka The Rise and Fall of The Hammer)
In the case of a Dethklok hate page, he goes under a pseudonym and spreads slander and digs up dirt about the band
(Based on my Fix-It Fic: Might also post pictures of his therapy cat, Magna)

Late-to-the-Party D&D Movie Review
In 1974, ABBA sang Waterloo at the Eurovision song contest to near universal acclaim, handily winning with 24 points (fun fact, the event was in Brighton, and England didn't give them any points at all). In the eight years that followed, ABBA released eight consecutive number-one albums and cemented themselves as one of the greatest pop bands that have ever existed.
But the thing is, they didn't really need to be. When you think about ABBA, you don't think about their blend of disco, europop, and lush orchestration, you think 'You can dance, you can jive, having the time of your life, ooh', or 'HALF PAST TWELVE!', or, if you're me, how Björn Ulvaeus sort of looks like a character from Mighty Boosh.
ABBA made an instant name for themselves and could have easily coasted on that alone for the rest of their natural lives, but instead they decided to actually put some effort in. ABBA were better than they needed to be.
You know what else happened in 1974? Gary Gygax and Dave Arneson came up with a little hack for Chainmail called The Fantasy Game, which they then changed to Dungeons & Dragons: Rules for Fantastic Medieval Wargames Campaigns Playable with Paper and Pencil and Miniature Figures, more commonly referred to as D&D because that other name is a bit... well. You know. It too received near-universal acclaim, if when you refer to the universe you mean specifically a few hundred nerds living around Lake Geneva.
If you want more history of the game itself then hey, there's a podcast called Roll History you should listen to. All you need to know is that D&D became a massive phenomenon worth millions, and much like ABBA's Mamma Mia!, it would end up on the big screen several decades later.
And again just like ABBA, Dungeons & Dragons: Honour Among Thieves is much better than it needed to be.
I don't have a whole lot to say about it—hence why most of this review is me talking about a Swedish pop band—but it's fun! The performances are charming, it's got a great D&D-game-worthy found family, and it does a good job of showcasing that the Forgotten Realms are NOT just Middle Earth (even though they are)! I especially liked leaning over to Sami whenever a spell was cast and going 'That's ✨Bigby's Grasping Hand✨' or 'That's ✨Maximilian's Earthen Grasp✨' even though Sami definitely knew already.
Plus, any plot contrivance could be easily dismissed by saying ‘ah, that was the dice’. Tripping while running? The dice. Easily sneaking past a guard? Dice. Intellect Devourers totally ignoring the party? Well it’s actually because none of the classes are INT-based so nobody would have a high enough score to—
Well, almost any plot contrivance. The film does in fact contain a straight Tiefling. I can only suspend my disbelief so high.
It was good! I was expecting another movie like the 2000 one with famed incest-jurisprudent Jeremy Irons, but instead got a competent, well-shot, tightly-plotted film with memorable characters, impressively-above-average choreography, and a total lack of Drizzt Do'Urden. The winner takes it all!!

Not really reading anything at the moment. The last book I believe I read was Kith and Kin by Marieke Nijkamp. Before that I started The Faceless Old Woman Who Secretly Lives In Your Home by Joseph Fink and Jeffery Cranor but I never got around to finishing it (it’s a good book I just keep forgetting about it)

Well I’m literally allergic to spice/peppers so definitely not that. Depending on the day I could go sweet or savory but probably more sweet

Finishing up my art for @percahliaweek! I’ve gotten the main stuff done but I’m reworking part of one of them just because I didn’t spend a lot of time on it and it shows and it’s bothering me lol

Album Review: 'Slugs of Love' - Little Dragon
Tumblr media
Welcome. Little Dragon are gonna whistle a little melody for you. And it goes a little something like this...
Clocking up over 15 years together as a band, the Swedish quartet have consistently delivered off-kilter yet soulful electro-pop, often from within the intimate confines of their Gothenburg studio.
After settling into a comfortable kind of groove on their past couple of albums, the band finally get a little more experimental, letting their freak flags fly on seventh album, Slugs of Love.
‘We’ve been exploring different ways to collaborate and communicate,’ frontwoman Yukimi Nagano tells Stereogum. ‘Dissolving patterns and making new ones. Nurturing our ability to curiously press down keys, to bang — sometimes hard sometimes gently — on different things, strumming strings, recording sounds and investigating the limits for how much or little a sound can be tweaked… Together, we have developed, replayed, danced to, cried, and laughed to this music as it has evolved forwards, backwards, sideways, and all around, but now finally as a complete masterpiece… This feels like our finest work yet. We are very proud.’
Unlike 2017’s Season High or the colourful boldness of New Me, Same Us, Slugs of Love is quite an insular record despite the kooky title, more indebted to the jazzy and nocturnal as the band turn slick nu-disco into something cool and contemplative, moving in small, considered steps rather than full-on busting a move.
‘Dear legends, you've been brave/This soul needs to be saved/My God, my God/I'm a neurotic mеss,’ Nagano intones on moody opener ‘Amöban,’ a smooth, seductive slice of neo-jazz that recalls the sultrier takes on 2014’s stellar Nabuma Rubberband, evoking the feel of a ghostly Stockholm winter. It’s rather revealing of the band’s creative processes, fraught with insecurity and self-doubt even after almost two decades of cult success and critical acclaim. ‘Frisco,’ meanwhile, is rubbery, jagged and hypnotic, replete with longing. ‘I never wanted to leave this behind/Chasing a dream always comes with a price,’ Nagano admits, still plagued by creative anxieties.
And yet, the rest of the record proves a lot more optimistic, whimsical even as Nagano finds herself in a rather romantic state of mind.
The dreamy, Eastern-tinged ‘Stay’ has the vocalist swooning over bouncy, synthetic bass, assuring ‘We're gonna be just fine, baby/No matter how it roll/Or how the endin' go/Leave your armour behind, baby’ while drifting further into a boundless night. ‘Gold’ is a glittering standout, groaning with subterranean bass and sleek with stylish synths, interpolating Whitney Houston’s ‘Million Dollar Bill.’ On ‘Disco Dangerous,’ she’s a ‘junkie for the rush,’ exchanging shy glances across the dancefloor; twinkling, pulsating and unashamedly girlish. Even when a friendship is crumbling on ‘Kenneth,’ Nagano tries to look on the bright side (‘Bitter spells/Bitter rain/Never last/Always pass’).
Things take a thrilling left turn of the title track, more ‘Whip It’ than ‘Let It Whip’ with its angular bass and New Wave-powered urgency, along with some beautiful floating sax riffs, providing a magical backdrop to Nagano’s languid musings on post-lockdown romance and hedonism.
Occasional stumbles, however, can pull you out of Slugs of Love’s gauzy reverie. Damon Albarn’s appearance is wasted on the six-minute space epic ‘Glow,’ starting off as a soulful experience of   before listlessly drifting off into the void, inevitably losing steam, proving a rather weak facsimile of its celestial predecessor, ‘Empire Ants’ from Gorillaz’s 2010 album Plastic Beach.
The album, however, rebounds nicely with sweet finale, ‘Easy Falling,’ an electro-folk lullaby swooning with retro girl group tones that has an eager Nagano running back in the direction of love, a soft, summery burst of nostalgia borne out of the bitter darkness of the Swedish chill.
Slugs of Love is not the most dynamic disco pop record. But it is stylishly produced and there’s a lot to love about its loose, sleek and minimalist grooves. It might not meet Nagano’s lofty descriptions of a ‘masterpiece,’ but it still proves rather mesmerising, reminding us of the beauty in simplicity in a world mostly indebted to extravagance and excess.

Little Dragon – Brooklyn Steel – October 16, 2023
Tumblr media
Little Dragon have been steadily putting out music since the band’s eponymous debut LP arrived back in 2007. Their seventh studio album, Slugs of Love, dropped this past July, and for the past three weeks the Swedish funk-tinged electronic-pop quartet has been crisscrossing North America in support of the new tunes. And on Monday, they closed out their tour in style at a Brooklyn Steel.

the teacher i mentioned was honestly a gem though. some things i remember include:
he on a few ocassions involved me in debates he was having with other students (one about whether you get chromosomes from both parents- ended in him calling a relative who worked in medicene because the girl who had started the discussion refused to believe you got them from both, which i'd just done a project on, one on the trope of the strong woman in fiction, & one on how/if grades can measure intelligence tmm)
gave me a random ass writing assignment for fun & a copy of a book he wanted me to read to borrow out of nowhere at the end of 7th grade
had to deal with my 8th grade self deciding the themes i wanted to handle in my writing that year were drugs, addiction, cultural standards of attraction, self-destructive behaviour, lgbt+ identity, and hate crimes
had to deal with the fact that my mother gave me the girl with the dragon tattoo series in 8th grade knowing nothing about the series, only for me to then decide that it was what i was going to do my book reports on (he put heavy emphasis on reccomending not to watch the american film without an adult, and the swedish film until i was older)
had to deal with me signing up to an art's program in 8th grade, then having a nervous breakdown & not attending the audition (he was very sweet, and i learned he'd been in a band)
heard someone (who was not cishet) refer to the high school we planned on attending as the gay school (it was the first to have a GSA in our area iirc) and then told him off & gave me a knowing look about it. (looking back i did not intentionally come out but the man had to have known)
survived me handing in petekey fanfiction because one night i was like, yk what, mikey is the one i currently think about the least. i should write something with him in it. and pete is cool. and then by the time is finished i was too tired to write the actual assignment i had due the next day so i just made a few changes and handed it in (i got an a)
gave me a very kind little chat about how i'd improved as a student, only to then near word-for-word repeat it when giving me an award at graduation.
oh one time he took a book from me because i kept reading during a lesson he was giving, and i then proceeded to immediatley pull another one out of my desk.
also he asked me for a writing assignment back one time because he "needed it for a second", only for me to turn my head & find he'd begun reading it to the class as part of the lesson that day. funnily enough even though that story had my name directly in it, people did not realize i'd written it at first.
but yeah like i really do think good teachers deserve the world. sir, i hope you got to write your theatre pieces.
