Biography of Jia Ya

[From JS060. Great-grandson of a certain Grand Commandant Xu.]

Jia Ya, courtesy name Yandu, was a native of Wuwei, he was the great grandson of Wei's Grand Commandant Xu. As young he had aspirations and schemes, his capacity and prospects were very majestic. Of those who saw him, nobody were not happy to adhere to him. He especially had respect and admiration of martial men, who wished to be bringing about their fate [for him].

He began with nomination to an Excellency's office, and thereupon successively [held] prominent posts. He moved to Grand Warden of Anding. The Inspector of Yong province, Ding Chuo, was greedy and offensive, and lost the hearts of the hundred families. He therefore slandered Ya to the King of Nanyang, Mo. Mo used his Army-Minister Xie Ban to attack him. Ya ran to the Lu River. He and Peng Dangzhong of the Hu and Dou Shou of the Di joined together to be as brothers, they assembled a multitude and attacked Ban. Chuo ran to Wudu, and Ya again entered Anding and killed Ban.

Emperor Min* used Ya as General of Agile Cavalry and Inspector of Yong province, ennobled Duke of Jiuquan. At the time the hundred families of the various commanderies hungered and starved. White bones covered the countryside, out of a hundred, not one survived.

Ya** led 20 000 people of the Rong and Jin, and wanted to attack Chang'an. The Grand Warden of Xiping, Zhu Hui, likewise firmly defended. Liu Can heard about it, and sent Liu Yao, Liu Ya, and Zhao Ran to resist Ya. They first attack Hui, but did not overcome him. Ya intercepted, struck, and greatly routed them. Yao was hit by a fleeting arrow, withdrew and fled. Ya pursued him until Ganquan. He turned around from the Wei bridge to assault Dangzhong***, and killed him. Thereupon he welcomed the King of Qin****, and served him as August Heir-Apparent.

Later Dangzhong's son Fubao***** grasped and led the crowd of Hu to attack him. Ya was defeated and fled. At night he fell into a stream, and was murdered by Fuhu*****. Ya was brave and scheming, and had aspirations and steadfastness. He therefore restored again the house of Jin to be reliant on himself. He as unlucky, toppled and fell. At the time people were pained at the loss of him.

[NOTES:

*Either ”Emperor Min” is an error for Emperor Hui or Emperor Huai, or these appointments only took place later, after the future Emperor Min’s entry into Chang’an. Since in JS102, Jia Ya is still only Grand Warden, the second option seems more likely.

**JS060 neglects to mention Sima Mo’s surrender of Chang’an to Han, and Jia Ya’s temporary submission. From JS102:

“ When Liu Yao had occupied Chang'an, the Grand Warden of Anding, Jia Ya, and the various Di and Qiang all sent hostages. Only the Inspector of Yong province, Qu Te, and the Grand Warden of Xinping, Zhu Hui firmly defended and did not surrender. The Army-Protector Qu Yun and the Prefect of Pinyang, Liang Su, wanted to run from the mountains south of Jingzhao to Anding. They happened to meet Ya's hostage son at Yinmi, they took him into their arms and turned back to Linjing. They pushed forward Ya to be General who Pacifies the South. He led a multitude of 50 000, and attacked Yao at Chang'an.”

***According to ZZTJ087, Jia Ya’s former ally was now Han’s Inspector of Liangzhou

Kung Lao’s twin sister Kung Shi was not a monk, but at the age of fourteen, she decided to pursue the dream of becoming a doctor. Kung Peng may have accepted her dream, but he refused to let her go to public school or college when growing up. Throughout the years, because of his heavy pride and massive expectations for Kung Lao, he believed she could learn all she could from the Shaolin masters and their family, knowing well that Mao Xiang use to be a teacher and he knew of an excellent herbal medic who lived around the Kunlun Mountains. He had faith, but refused to send her out into the world where she wished to go.

She had no choice but to let her father take control, as she wished not to disobey him like her brother was. She was introduced to a woman named Lu Ya, and began training with her away from home up in the mountains. While living there and studying medical practice, she learned the basics of Kunlunquan, same as her twin but not as much as he learned. After two years, Kung Shi came across a weak, sickly young man in need of assistance. Alone, she succeeded in carrying him back to Lu Ya, and took part in helping with his treatment. During recovery, he introduced himself as Zhao Jian, who was the same age as Shi and was nothing more than a city boy-- a high school drop out, who planned on leaving for Taiwan, but his plans were cut off when he took ill. He didn’t know how he got to Kunlun, and couldn’t remember, but after taking almost two months to fully recover, he decided to remain and pay his debt to them saving his life.

Over time, he and Shi became good friends, bonding over their tough lifestyles, their hobbies, and much more. Within a year, they became closer, and their relationship improved; they began to develop feelings for each other, and soon started to date despite little free time. The biggest issue to Shi was introducing Jian to the family, especially to her father and her brother. So, she kept it secret until she turned eighteen. She brought him to the estate, and Jian received skepticism, as expected from Kung Peng and Kung Lao; Mao Xiang, though upset that Shi kept this from the family, was supportive, and welcomed Zhao Jian with open arms. As the years slowly went by, Kung Lao began to show acceptance, while Peng remained on a stern guard around his daughter’s sweetheart.

By the time she reached twenty, Shi announced that she was pregnant, and Jian was shocked. He was apprehensive at first, having never been a father, or had a good father in his life, but for his love, he stayed, and gladly asked her to marry him. When hearing the news, Kung Lao was surprisingly overjoyed; he had always dreamed of being an doting uncle. Mao Xiang was also very happy, and Lu Ya went on about how she knew this was going to happen, and of course, showing her support. Kung Peng was not so happy, but he at least respected Jian’s choice to marry her. However, he told the couple that the child would never share Jian’s family name. He felt the Kung name held far more importance and refused to watch his grandchild hold anothers’ family name when they held no meaning.

Nine months after the wedding, the baby was born; it was a little boy Shi fondly named Jin-- Kung Jin. Kung Lao absolutely adored his newborn nephew; he even cried the first time he got to hold him.

At the age of twenty five, Shi tried to stop her brother from participating in the tournament when it was Liu Kang who was chosen. Kung Lao could not be stopped, and after promising her and his little nephew that he would be back, he left...but the promise would not be kept.

After Liu Kang won the tournament, the Wu Shi is attacked by Tarkatans, leaving many monks dead in the process. Zhao Jian would become one of the casualties trying to assist in fighting them off and protecting his family, and Kung Shi tries her damn hardest to save him, only to fail. Mere moments after the dreadful attack, Zhao Jian dies from his injuries at the age of 25. Kung Shi is heartbroken, only for the ache to deepen once she receives word of Kung Lao’s death in the hands of Shao Kahn.

After his death, The Kung family lost their family fortunes and moved to America. Kung Shi, having lost her best friend/husband, and her dear twin brother, shut down. She became vexed, depressed, and so heartbroken, and it would only worsened when she realized the man responsible was none other than Raiden. Multiple times, she approached him, being told of Kung Lao’s true fate, and demanded he go and bring him back, only to be told there was nothing he could do. With two massive holes in her heart, she deemed herself unable to care for her son, and passed him to her mother to take care of him.

A year after Jian’s and Lao’s deaths, Shi disappeared from her family home, leaving only a letter that stated how much how sorry she was to leave, how angry she was at Raiden, and more importantly, how much she loved Jin and told him that he will grow up great one day. During a thunderstorm, she was found dead after apparently jumping to her death from the top of a hotel building away from home...
