El Cortez Hotel & Casino, 1962. Santo & Johnny, Lorraine Barry, Martin Hale, and Marvelle on the board.
The legend of Fat Irish Green.
In 1962 Jackie Gaughan bought El Cortez from J. Kell Houssels, and inherited a permanent, non-paying resident that legend has come to know as Fat Irish Green.
El Cortez was owned in '45-46 by a group that included Ben "Bugsy" Siegel. It is considered the first mob ownership of a Las Vegas hotel-casino, a prelude to Siegel's involvement in opening the Flamingo Hotel.
In the legend of Fat Irish Green, Siegel places a satchel of cash in his care. After Siegel's murder in '47, mob associates search Siegel's Flamingo Hotel suite expecting to find thousands of dollars in cash and find only hundreds. The mob soon discovers that Fat Irish Green has the money.
According to Dean Jennings in, We Only Kill Each Other: The Life and Bad Times of Bugsy Siegel, “when the time came he surrendered the cash [and] he got his reward. For the past nineteen years Green has been living at the El Cortez Hotel in Las Vegas. He has never had a bill for room and board, and he gets small cash handouts now and then to pay for drinks and the other needs of life. The syndicate may cheat and rob and pay graft and kill, but they take care of a loyal man.”
Later versions of the story of Fat Irish Green imagine the man's character, depicting him similar to The Godfather's Luca Brasi, a bumbling killer who is devoted to the mob, stressing the quality of their loyalty to one another. Quotes or personal conversations between Siegel and Green have been invented in some stories, and the amount of money in the satchel ranges from tens to hundreds of thousands. The legend ignores that Green is rewarded a room at El Cortez after Siegel and mob associates had already sold the hotel. The account by Dean Jennings was the first time the story of Fat Irish Green was published, and the book contains no citations or sources. The story is also told in When the Mob Ran Vegas, which contains no citations or sources.
In a panel at the Mob Museum in 2024, Michael Gaughan, son of Jackie, was asked about this legend.
“You want to know about Fat Irish Green? He was never called Fat Irish Green. I was with him for seven years and no one called him Fat Irish Green. Someone wrote a book and called him that.”
“He was a money runner for Siegel,” said Gaughan, “and he was a degenerate craps shooter. He blew the money one day, and they kind of forgave him. Six months later he did it again, and they took him out to the desert and beat him with a baseball bat. He did no favor for Siegel. J. Kell Houssels and Benny Binion supported him.”
“My dad bought El Cortez from Houssels and we inherited this guy. My dad told him, ‘Find an apartment, wherever you want to go, any apartment, I’ll pay the rent. I just want you out of the hotel.‘ And the next day Kell called. After that he stayed there every day. He was not bright, but he caused no problems.”

#PBS "To Be Young, Gifted and Black," depicting the life and works of playwright Lorraine Hansberry, aired on "NET Playhouse" in 1972 and repeated the following year. The cast comprised Ruby Dee, Al Freeman Jr., Roy Scheider, Lauren Jones (above), Claudia McNeil, Barbara Barrie, and Blythe Danner.
Weaving together excerpts from the playwright's diaries, letters, and portions of her work, this TV adaptation of the Off-Broadway play includes many scenes shot on location in the South and on the streets of Harlem. The program was released on VHS in 1998, but a remastered DVD never happened.

After Marianne left school in April, Connell entered a period of low spirits. Teachers spoke to him about it. The guidance counsellor told Lorraine she was 'concerned'. People in school were probably talking about it too, he didn't know. He couldn't summon up the energy to act normal. At lunch he sat in the same place as always, eating sad mouthfuls of food, not listening to his friends when they spoke. Sometimes he wouldn't notice even when they called his name, and they would have to throw something at him or clip him on the head to get his attention. Everyone must have known there was something wrong with him. He felt a debilitating shame about the kind of person he'd turned out to be, and he missed the way Marianne had made him feel, and he missed her company. He called her phone all the time, he sent her text messages every day, but she never replied. His mother said he was barred from visiting her house, though he didn't think he would have tried that anyway. For a while he tried to get over it by drinking too much and having anxious, upsetting sex with other girls. At a house party in May he slept with Barry Kenny's sister Sinead, who was twenty-three and had a degree in Speech and Language Therapy. Afterwards he felt so bad he threw up, and he had to tell Sinead he was drunk even though he wasn't really. There was no one he could talk to about that. He was excruciatingly lonely. He had recurring dreams about being with Marianne again, holding her peacefully the way he used to when they were tired, and speaking with her in low voices. Then he'd remember what bad happened, and wake up feeling so depressed he couldn't move a single muscle in his body.

Oh you’re watching Bojack! Did you try watching it before? I feel like I remember saying you couldn't get into it, though probably thinking of something else. How do you like it so far, seeing you’re on season 3 now?
Yeah, i watched a couple of episodes of season 1 and didn’t find it funny but I was telling @rabbitsrants about the sopranos and she was talking about how there seemed to be some similarities between bojack and tony, which makes sense now that I’m watching it because I view bojack in the tony soprano mould, so when I finished my sopranos rewatch I decided to give it another go.
It’s definitely an interesting viewing experience because I recognize that it’s a good exploration of depression and addiction but I’m not all that interested in bojack as a character especially coming off of a sopranos binge because while bojack is a horse he’s coded as a white middle aged man and I’ve watched enough explorations of morally grey/not particularly good white male characters (walt -breaking bad) with depression (tony -the sopranos ) or dysfunctional back stories (don-mad men) who are creatives (hank -californiacation) and bojack as a character is a continuation of that thread but a horse and that doesn't really do much for me when i don't find anything particularly new about his character or about how they approach that emotional premise of the show, he's simply a horse, which is why I couldn’t get into the show in the first place because I was like I’ve watched this over and over. This type of white male character is essentially a staple of “auteur” television or “prestige” television (these came out after but like Barry or Succession, there’s no shortage of deeply flawed white men to watch).
BUT I find the tongue-in-cheek jokes about Hollywood and celebrity and movies/television really funny and clever so like when Jessica Biel makes an appearance and Diane doesn’t know who she is despite Jessica listing off her accomplishments and she’s like *sigh* I was on seventh heaven and posed topless for a magazine and Diane was like oh YEAH, i cackled or the pointed “this is about improv NOT Scientology” speech or the fact that they still call it hollywoo, or the fact that bojack sees a therapist briefly who is voiced by lorraine braco who played dr. melfi i.e. tony's therapist in the sopranos, that type of stuff, the minutiae of the world I do find hilarious because a lot of it is for people who love/watch a lot of movies/television so there's this appreciation for the medium in the show that i like, or when they incorporate aspects of them being animals into their personalities like mr. peanutbutter hating tennis and the mailman. and I do like the dark jokes like when a random bird tries to jump off from a building but starts flying and is like dammit I forgot I could fly. Basically, most things not bojack is what keeps me entertained.
Although there are some poignant lines around bojack that resonated. I’d seen people be like oooh yeah about Wanda’s when you look at things through rose coloured glasses red flags just look like flags but I was more oh damn about bojack’s explanation of why they’re breaking up i.e you didn’t know me then fell in love with me then got to know me etc. and I like the flashbacks with his mother because she’s terrible but has some really funny lines. And there are certain episodes that I do end up invested in seeing just how terrible he is, like the New Mexico episode and everything that went on with penny and charlotte and prom.
