Discharge Petition for H.R. 7152, the Civil Rights Act of 1964

Record Group 233: Records of the U.S. House of RepresentativesSeries: General Records

This item, H.R. 7152, the Civil Rights Act of 1964, faced strong opposition in the House Rules Committee. Howard Smith, Chairman of the committee, refused to schedule hearings for the bill. Emanuel Celler, Chairman of the Judiciary Committee, attempted to use this discharge petition to move the bill out of committee without holding hearings. The petition failed to gain the required majority of Congress (218 signatures), but forced Chairman Smith to schedule hearings.

Omg, Whims is 💯 inspired by Underworld! You may have guessed by my username that I'm a sucker (pun intended) for Vampires and Werewolves. Underworld, with its lore and forbidden romance just fits so well with Clexa imo. Add in the canon Primes, and you've got the perfect cast of characters. The entire story started with this:

Sidney Hopper- These two and Jonathan would have totally been like the three musketeers growing up so I could see a besties turned worst enemies and back progression with them.

Stacy Byers- Similar to Sidney, I'm seeing a "sisters in all but blood" situation

Ainsley Winchester- Roxy always wanted a sister so I think she would love Ainsley. I can see them trying to be the peacekeepers of the family and rolling their eyes at the boys constantly.

Deborah Winchester- these two would have either been best friends or constantly at each other's throats after John found Roxy. Either way, I think they would have loved each other. I could see them being a formidable hunting team to rival their brothers.

Elle Winchester- the adopted sisters with the secret pasts? I love it!!! Potential for lots of drama and shocking reveals!

Esther Cott- I'm not sure exactly what these two would do together but I feel like they would make interesting friends

Drea Jones

Ana Andrews- Total parallels for their brothers. They have the brain cells. Do not get paid enough for this shit.

Charlotte Jones- The female role model Drea needs in her life. Sister Bonding (TM). Will fuck you up.

Delaney Carlyle- Chaos. All the chaos. I like it!

Fallon Parris Jones- You know that part in The Parent Trap between Annie and Hallie realizing they're twins and the end of camp? I feel like that's these two when Fallon comes back to Riverdale

Harper Harrison- These two would be great friends. Drea is totally the kind of friend to learn sign language along with Harper so they can talk shit about people without anybody knowing. Also was Riverdale High Drama Department's designated choreographer, she would talk about musicals all day with her

Kris Keller- As Kevin's best friend, I could see Drea becoming a regular fixture in the Keller household to the point where Tom will walk into one of the twins' rooms to find Drea sprawled on the floor with her sketchbook and just be like "yeah sure why not?"

Lyra Lovell- Creative dancer girls!!! Will spill blood for Jughead Jones. Exhausted by Gladys Jones.

Tanya Conway- As someone who loves a good mystery and, thanks to Archie, never really believed Svenson was the Black Hood, dress would totally help Tanya prove her dad's innocence.

Roni Stark

Alessia Stark- We could do some interesting things here with both of them having the serum used on them. Plus I've never considered Roni having a big sister. Could be fun!

Adelaide Stark- Roni would absolutely ADORE Adi! She'd be the cool aunt who took her on trips aunt bought her whatever she wanted. She'd also be the one to bake cookies and make pillow courts for movie marathons.

Aris Stark-- Much like with Adi, Roni would be Aris's ultimate supporter growing up. When the boys go to space and the girls are left behind, Roni tries to guide Aris through developing unexpected superpowers. She's been there herself so she should be able to handle it, right?

Athena Stark- Ultimate Aunt Roni would help her ambitious niece get anything her little heart desired

Ava Potts- Ava describing Roni "my aunt who's not really my aunt bursts into flames. Sure why not?"

Cora (& Orion) Royce- Roni would totally love this little girl and her determination to help protect her family. She'd do everything she could to help her

Zora Wright- I could see these two being great friends

Cora Hargreeves

Alice Hargreeves- Cora likes to think she was the empathetic sibling growing up. She tried to include Viktor as much as possible and would have treated Alice no different. When they grow up and find themselves the most stable of their family, they're have to be the brain cells to help keep everyone focused to stop the apocalypse

Andromeda Hargreeves- Cora would try to help Andromeda develop her powers by levitating small objects around her for her to try to catch. She doesn't blame her for leaving and welcomes her home

Audrey- They would totally bond over music and being the "artsy" siblings

Cassie Hargreeves- Oh this could be fun! Cora's psychic but she has a lot of trouble with that part of her powers do when cause around he uses Cora more for her telekinesis. Then when caddies gone he would push her more to have visions.

Cleo Sullivan- Anyone who can work with Diego on a regular basis and not kill him is immediately a friend of Cora's. She'd be glad to have another girl around who knows how to fight

Kamaria Hargreeves- We love a long lost sister in this house! I see a lot of room for shenanigans here

Max Carmichael- Cora would either love Max or she would annoy the hell out of her. I'm not sure which. Maybe both

Mira Hargreeves- "My thirteen year old brother and his eighteen year old daughter just fell through a time portal to stop the apocalypse. Sounds about right." -Cora Hargreeves

Mireille Labonair- Cora would probably be wary of anyone who agreed to work with her father but once she got past that, she'd love that Luther had someone who made him happy

Odessa Hargreeves- Cora would hate having her sister resent their family but she wouldn't her.

Poppy- Cora would love Poppy! She adores Grace so having a sister like her would be awesome. When they grow up she would love getting to finally show her the world!

Sierra Nearing- Cora actually works at Griddy's after leaving the Academy. Sierra would probably be her first real friends and I love that! Cora would show her all the sculptures she works on when she's not at the diner. Curiously, her shifts never line up with her siblings' visits so she still doesn't know Sierra knows them beyond what's she's told her. Even Diego and Klaus who she actually sees regularly.

Vienna Montgomery- As Diego's designated favorite sibling, Cora would have met Vienna and immediately love her. They would be great friends and cora would only be mildly surprised but not unhappy when Vienna shows up to the funeral.

Virginia West- Cora would absolutely love Ginny! Books are some of her favorite things and watching Ginny literally bring stories to life would be like magic to her.

Wilhelmina Hargreeves- Cora might resent Willa a little bit for leaving, but she still loves her and understands why she did it. When she comes back for the funeral, Cora is glad to see Willa just like all the others.

Mickey Daniels (& Melissa van Aren, Emily Kirkpatrick, and Amy Turner)

Alyssa Solomon- If there's one thing Mickey Daniels loves, it's a challenge. Befriending Alyssa Solomon has proven to be one of the bigger challenges Mickey's encountered. The girl has secrets on top of secrets. Lucky for Mickey, secrets are her chosen trade.

Annalise Goode- Mickey's part of the welcome committee for new students so she'd be totally excited to meet Annalise! I could see them being like workout partners and training together

Leia Gallagher- Mickey would think it's so coul that Latoya is a direct descendant of Gilly! They'd probably spend a lot of time talking about places they've travelled and having parental figures who are always away.

Sami Upton

Abbie Hudson- These two would totally have been best friends growing up! They would have spent all their time practicing gymnastics moves and driving Finn and Noah crazy. They probably would have decided to join Glee together just to try it and both fell in love with it.

Christina Hummel- Sami doesn't agree with the way the football team treats the Hummel twins. She also doesn't do much to interfere for fear of losing her own social standing. As an original Glee member, she's been friends with Kurt and at least frenemies with Christina since freshman year.

Joy Schuester- Sami would totally be the friend Joy would look at when Will does something crazy/stupid/embarrassing like "Do you see what I have to deal with???" Only for Sami to sheriff and start laughing like "I'm sorry I can't help you, but this is hilarious."

Kendall Pierce- Sami would love Kendall because she too would see no reason to choose between cheer and Glee. I could see them being kind of a mirror for Quinn and Britt

I Can't Live Without You

word count: 2050

Chapter 2

“We met when I was at a cafe, recovering after a fight of ours. I was nursing a cup of coffee. She’s a reporter,” he mumbled.

“Oh, a real Clark Kent, are we now?’ I clapped my hands together. “Your turn. I choose truth.”

“How did you get your cat?” He asked, looking at Evangeline.

I tilted my head. “Long story. And it might make me seem more human, and, god forbid, like I have feelings.”

“I want to hear. Or, you let Evangeline and I go.”

“Fine. Back when I was just a small witch, when I was seventeen, I went to the local pet shelter, around September, and adopted this tiny black kitten, just weaned. I didn’t intend to name this cat or actually care for it, because I was going to sacrifice it on Samhain, to Arawn, or the Horned God. Depends on which Celtic religion you follow. Beside the point.” I took a deep breath. “My plan was to keep this kitten alive until Samhain, then sacrifice it. As I took the cat, the lady at the desk told me her name was Bagheera. You know, the bitch from The Jungle Book? Someone had found the bag in the ocean, just barely sinking, rescued it, and found it full of kittens. This one was the only live one.

“I took the cat anyway, and she was the sweetest little thing, cuddling, mewing softly every time she needed something, and already knew to use the litter box. Samhain rolled around, and I just… couldn’t kill her. I had gotten attached. I never referred to that damned cat by name, but I decided Bagheera was an ugly name, so I named her Ophelia, after the Shakespearean character who drowned herself.” I smiled. “Truth or dare?”

“Wow, Nyx. That’s actually really nice of you. I didn’t know you cared about animals that much.”

“Shut up. Truth or dare?”

He ignored me. “You actually took pity on a small animal? You’re not psychotic after all!” He marveled.

Sick of his shit, I pulled a knife from my book and held it to Evangeline’s throat and wrenched her head back. “Truth?! Or dare?!” I yelled. “This isn’t ‘Compliment Nyx: The Game,’ Lucian! This is a matter of life and death!”

Lucian’s eyes widened, and I could tell her was panicked. “You wouldn’t.”

“Oh, I would, Luc. I definitely would. I’ve changed since I adopted that stupid cat.”

Evangeline sniffled, reminding me that she was supposed to be a part of this game. “Oh, Eva,” I said, leaning down to her ear. “Truth or dare?”

“Um… Dare?”

“Perfect! What fun!” I untied her blindfold and put my hands on her shoulders. “I dare you to absolutely rip Lucian to shreds. Tell him every mean thing you’ve ever thought about him.”

Her eyes welled with fresh tears. “I-I couldn’t do that to him, Nyx,” she mumbled.

“And why is that?” I asked.

“Because I love him,” she whispered.

“What was that?” I asked. “I didn’t quite hear you.”

“Because I love him, okay?” She blurted. “I love Lucian, and I can’t hurt him like that.”

“Oh, you’re no fun. Laynie, grab the tongs,” I ordered. “And the scissors.”

“What are you doing to her?” Lucian struggled against the chains. “Don’t hurt her. Please, Nyx, I’ll do anything.”

Delaynie handed me the scissors and tongs, and I paused. “Anything?” I asked.

“Anything. Just, please don’t hurt her,” he begged.

“Ugh. You’re lucky I’m feeling merciful today. Let the girls knock you back out so I can sleep peacefully, knowing you won’t know where I am.” I turned. “Laynie, Deya, get the blindfolds.” I walked out the door to begging screams from Evangeline.

I got on my motorcycle and rode home. As I got to my apartment door, I heard music coming from my number. Not having any conventional weapons on me other than a pocket knife, I crafted some darkness into my hand, the type that would send whoever it touched into madness, depending on how much they had seen and what. I opened my door and saw a figure on my couch. I wound back, getting ready to throw.

“That won’t be necessary, Nyx. I’m just here for a visit.” The voice of my mother filled the room.

I lowered my hand, darkness dissipating. “Mother?”

The figure stood, and I ran to her, capturing her in a hug. “I’ve missed you so much, Momma.” I hugged her tightly and inhaled deeply, trying to smell her gingerbread scent. But she smelled differently… empty. Suddenly, I collapsed on the floor. “No!” I scrabbled at the floor, trying to smell that wonderfully spicy smell. “Mother!” I curled up. “It’s not real, Nyx. It’s just your mind playing tricks on you again. You fell for it. That’s what happens when you’re locked up repeatedly in solitary.” I took a deep breath and crawled to the couch, climbing up and covering myself with a blanket.

Ophelia, sensing something was wrong, hopped out of her kitty tree and onto the couch, curling up in the curve of my stomach. I hugged her and started to cry, my tears disappearing into her soft fur.

I woke up, wanting to commit a crime. Wanting to go all out, I put on heavy eyeliner, dark purple lipstick, mascara, and enough bronzer to carve out my cheekbones to the gods. I looked in the mirror and smiled, spraying leave-in conditioner in my hair and putting it in a voluminous side part. Pinning it in place with a bobby pin, I looked in the mirror. “Perfect. Now for clothes.”

I opened my closet, settling for a black tank top with a red-and-black flannel, and black jeans. I laced up my combat boots. Tucking a gun into the waistband of my jeans. “There. Now I’m ready for the day.” I fed Ophelia, cleaned out her litter box, and strolled out the door, twirling my keys around my finger. “I think I’ll take the motorcycle today. It’s a nice day.”

I called Delaynie. “Hey.”

“Hey, girl.. What’s up?” Delaynie sounded happier than usual.

“I’m about to go for a ride. Just in case, could you watch Ophelia if I don’t come back? Her litter box has already been cleaned, I just need you to feed her tonight. I’ll call you if I get arrested.”

“Okay. And why did you feel the need to call me instead of texting?”

“I don’t know, I just wanted to be nice for a change. You know, instead of texting.”

“Alright. Love you, mon ami.”

“Je t’aime.” I made kissy noises into the phone and hung up. I walked around the parking garage before realizing my bike was gone. “What the fuck?” I called Lucian.

“This is Lucian. Leave a message.” Voicemail.

“Lucian, you absolute whore! If my bike is gone because of you, Evangeline will be the last thing you need to worry about!” I shouted into the phone. “Give me my fucking motorcycle back!”

I stormed out of the garage, wandering around downtown Long Beach. I stopped by Starbucks and walked in. A short guy with dyed red hair and a septum piercing stood at the counter, looking like he was 5 minutes away from blowing his brains out. When he saw me, he forced his face to brighten. “Welcome to Starbucks, how can I help you?”

“I’d like a grande dark chocolate mocha with extra espresso, and a sausage, cheddar and egg sandwich.”

“That’ll be ten dollars, please.”

I handed him $15. “Keep the change.” I leaned in. “If I were you,” I looked at his nametag, “Levi, I’d go into the back room. Go pretend to wash dishes or something.”

He blinked slowly. “Look, I just moved here, and I really couldn’t give less of a shit if you kill me. I’m barely making enough for both housing and food.” He sighed. “God, I fucking hate California.” He put the money in the tray and turned to say my order aloud. He turned back around. “Name?’

I smiled, a little taken aback. “You don’t know who I am? Seriously?”

He stared tiredly at me. “I got here like a month ago. I don’t follow the news.”

“I’m Nyx. You know, the girl who keeps breaking out of prison, robs stores, and has the power of the night at her fingertips?” He showed no recognition. “You know what? DOesn’t matter. Order for Nyx.”

“Alright.” He punched my name into the system.

I moved to a couch against the far wall and sat there, legs crossed over one another. I pulled out my phone and smiled at the picture of Delaynie and I sitting on a rooftop, legs dangling over the edge. We were smiling and licking ice cream cones; taken right after high school graduation. I scrolled through my pictures, and saw a text from an unknown number. Attached image. I furrowed my brow and curled over my phone, clicking on the message.

Evangeline? It’s the girl from last night, dressed in scandalous red lingerie and heels. I got another text from the number.

I enjoyed being tied up last night… I thought it was something Lucian set up. Wanna come over and continue? ;)

I quickly turned off my phone. What the hell? My name was called for my food and coffee. I stood up and grabbed it, relocating to a table in the corner, where no one could see over my shoulder. I texted her back.

What the fuck? How did you get my number?

Some things are best kept secret…

Don’t fucking play with me. Aren’t you and Lucian a thing?

Don’t worry about it. So are you coming over or not?

Fuck no. And delete my number. I may be evil, but I’m not cruel.

I groaned and took a bite of my sandwich and a sip of my coffee. “Damn, this is pretty good,” I said. I finished and threw my trash away, and smiled. Timing is everything. I took the gun out of my waistband and shot it into the air. People screamed and cowered.

I climbed onto a table. “Now. Who here can contact Lucian on a whim?” No one moved. “Come on, don’t be shy.” I smiled, admitting I looked a little crazy.

The guy behind the counter was the only one who didn’t look scared. “Could you please get off the table?” he asked. “That’s a safety issue, and I don’t want my supervisor on my ass for it if you fall.”

“Oh, shut up,” I shot back. I looked around. “Seriously? No one here has his number? The whole fucking city is obsessed with this man, and no one knows where he is. Ugh.” I hopped off the table. “Thanks for the coffee, by the way.”

I walked out and around the town, looking for Lucian. “Where are you?!” I yelled at the sky. Giving up, I decided to find Lucian myself. I ended up on Artesia Boulevard, in front of a ramshackle apartment building and saw Lucian walk out.

“Hey, Lucian!” I called. I walked up to him. He ignored me, but walked faster. “Lucian!” I caught up to him and grabbed his elbow. “Hey.”

He spun around, fire in his eyes. “What, Nyx? What the fuck could you possibly want from me?”

I took a step back. “What? I just needed to tell you something.”

“Really? Are you going to tell me about how you texted Evangeline and asked her to sleep with you? I told you not to touch her, and you fucking ignored me! That was the one thing we agreed on, Nyx! We don’t touch partners!”

I narrowed my eyes. “For the record, Golden Boy, I was going to tell you she sent me a picture of her in lacy lingerie and asked me to go over to her house. I may steal objects and money, but I don’t steal from people. Especially from those as insecure as you.” I shook my head. “Go fuck yourself, Lucian.” I turned to walk away.

“Oh, no, Nyx. You are not pulling this bullshit on me today.” I saw a burst of light from behind me and I shielded my eyes. I started to run, and heard footsteps behind me. “Nyx, get your ass back here!”
