there's glitter on the floor after the party: the deleted scenes
i'm sure it'll make someone happy because i think we all need it! just as a note, this is all unedited so some of it might make no sense and that's okay.
(i recommend the google doc for easier reading otherwise the whole thing is under the cut)
Chapter one: 2023
I don’t have anything to show…anything I did cut has already been long deleted. My bad. The first two are very sparse because I was cutting unwanted things as my Google docs was lagging whenever I opened it. The only thing I remember writing that chapter was that it was meant to coincide with Daniel’s return to COTA in real life but I ran out of time so I pushed it back to Las Vegas.
Chapter two: 2024
CUT: Daniel winning the championship
WHY: Felt too rushed and easy. No emotional pay off, you were only just introduced to Daniel in RBR again. Also don’t ask me what happened to Max for him to not just clean sweep 2023-2027. Also don’t ask who won the championship in 2026. I declare that your favourite driver won it and I definitely did not forget to give a championship.
DANIEL: Oh my god, it’s just surreal like I don’t know how to describe it. Especially after the past couple years, it’s just—yeah. And to do it with Max too, it’s just something special for me and the team.

DANIEL: Doors are meant to be opened.
[00:15:09]
PRODUCER: Worst thing about racing in Formula 1?
DANIEL: Accidents, hands down. It’s horrifying as a driver to watch someone crash, because that’s when everything sort of gets a reality check in the cockpit. Like we are racing around at three-hundred kilometres an hour, and there is a real chance that something could go wrong. I’ll never forget Max’s Silverstone accident, just—yeah it just a horrible thing to witness.

INT. RED BULL RACING HOSPITALITY - DAY
[00:00:00]
MAX: Hello everyone and today we are playing the newlywed game.
DANIEL: Are you excited?
MAX: I mean I have to say yes otherwise I look like I’m in an unhappy marriage.
DANIEL: Wow—
MAX:—Also the name doesn’t even make sense. Newlywed? That isn’t us.
DANIEL: [To off screen] Guys, I would get someone to approve your overtime, we’re gonna be here a while.
[00:02:01]
OFF SCREEN: Who is more likely to overpack for a holiday?
DANIEL: Don’t look at me!
MAX: We have three suitcases.
DANIEL: It takes effort to look this good.
MAX: Three suitcases every single race weekend.
DANIEL: What’s the next question?

Hi all,
Please see attachment below for finalised details regarding your press strategy and talking points this weekend. Media have been advised to not ask any questions about the ring and we’d like to keep it that way. Remember to keep it vague if you do get asked, and if you don’t feel comfortable a simple no comment will suffice.
Please email for any further clarification or questions and good luck this weekend. (And please no spur of the moment Las Vegas—Elvis impersonator weddings you two.)

CUT: The chaotic Abu Dhabi super seat swap
WHY: I had to cut this because I altered the timeline, Las Vegas was going to the second last race. In an earlier version Max and Daniel were gonna come back in 2026 and also drop the Matilda news at the same time but I wanted more content just out of Maxiel so I had to leave this on the cutting board. Some of it made it into the published fic but the original thing was more chaotic. (Also I changed the Red Bull junior driver at least once a week because they kept dropping them. It went from Hauger, to Crawford, to Maloney and then I just gave up because I could not keep up.)
lights-out-away-we-go
red bull needed to replace two drivers and they did in THE MOST CHAOTIC way possible. okay, just listen:
the official red bull reserve driver is liam lawson (of alpha tauri, so he obviously gets pulled up)
alpha tauri then call on zane maloney to replace liam (alpha tauri’s reserve driver)
BUT, daniel’s car still needs to fulfil the mandatory rookie free practice session (max’s was completed in mexico when maloney drove)
red bull can’t get zane in daniel’s car again cause he’s got to drive liam’s… so they’ve got to find someone who has the super licence points … we’ll come back to this
so right now car 3 is being driven by liam lawson, car 40 is driven by zane maloney. i hear you ask… who is driving car 1? it’s none other than yuki tsunoda (of alphatauri)
I KNOW, but red bull have quite literally run out of contracted reserve drivers and i believe because every driver is technically employed by red bull (whether they drive for RB or AT) they’re able to pull them up or down without the FIA kicking up a fuss
i’ll wait for why red bull pulled up both AT’s
this means yuki tsunoda’s alpha tauri will be without a driver and once again, red bull call Pepe Marti
#i don’t even know if this is 100% correct i could be so wrong

SKY F1 SPORTS- 2025 ABU DHABI GRAND PRIX - FREE PRACTICE 1
David CROFT: Welcome ladies and gentlemen to our final race of the 2025 season, to our first free practice session under the blistering sun of Abu Dhabi and if this is your first time watching, welcome along cause this will certainly be an interesting race weekend. Now, eagle eyed viewers may have caught that AlphaTauri driver Yuki Tsunoda is in the Red Bull, and his team mate is sitting in the next garage over not in a car. Anthony Davidson is with me—Ant, care to explain to our viewers at home the driver seat swap chaos that’s happening down at Red Bull?
Anthony DAVIDSON: Hello everyone, wherever in the world you may be watching and yes, chaos is the right word for it isn’t it? I’ve got about five pieces of paper and I’m going to do my best to explain, what I think, is the most complicated driver situation in F1 history.
CROFT: Yes, for those who didn’t join us last time out or who may be new to F1, I promise driver seat talk usually isn’t this complicated but we’ll do our best to make sense of it all. Now we’ve got to start at the last race for it all to make sense. Red Bull driver Daniel Ricciardo had a nasty crash with Enzo Fittipaldi of Haas that left him with a concussion and bruised ribs, which is why presumably he isn’t racing today, and we wish him well in his recovery. Red Bull’s other driver Max Verstappen was also not able to race this weekend for an unspecified reason, so Red Bull are left with two empty seats.
DAVIDSON: We know that Red Bull’s official reserve driver is Liam Lawson, so that’s no problem there. He’s driving Daniel’s number 3 car, but here’s where the trouble starts. Car number 3 still needs to complete its mandatory FP1 session, which Zane Maloney was planning to do this session. But you’ll notice that Zane is in Liam’s car right now, the Alpha Tauri—and this is because he’s Alpha Tauri’s reserve driver.
CROFT: Still following everyone? So far, car number 3 is being driven by Liam Lawson, car number 40 is being driven by Zane Maloney. But Liam Lawson isn’t even in car number 3 at the moment, it’s Pepe Marti, who is currently racing in Formula 2 and part of Red Bull’s junior academy. He’s competing the mandatory rookie FP1 session for car number 3.
DAVIDSON: So now we move onto Max Verstappen’s car, which is being driven by the other AlphaTauri driver, Yuki Tsunoda. Which now means AlphaTauri needs a driver to replace him and it’s Red Bull junior driver, Isack Hadjar who is in car number 22.
CROFT: Right, so it’s Yuki Tsunoda and Liam Lawson in Red Bull for the race, Zane Maloney and Isack Hadjar in the AlphaTauri’s and Pepe Marti in Liam or Daniel’s Red Bull for FP1. Confused? Don’t worry, so are we so bare with us if we accidentally get names and teams wrong because I believe this is possibly the biggest driver change in F1 history.
DAVIDSON: Yes and because I know people will be asking, “Why didn’t Red Bull just put Maloney in Daniel’s car for the whole weekend?” and we have an answer and officially, it’s because of contracts. Whatever behind the scenes isn’t allowing him to drive that Red Bull which is why they called up Yuki instead. Maloney has also said he feels more confident driving the AlphaTauri all weekend rather than the Red Bull, so that also may play a factor in this.
CROFT: But also this is a perfect opportunity for Red Bull to compare both drivers, should the opportunity for one of them to make the move into Red Bull when the time arises.
Chapter four: 2026
CUT: Netflix Drive to Survive script
WHY: Once again, I was lazy and didn’t want to write a script. I kinda wish I did though, I think it would’ve given Las Vegas 2025 more substance, especially because you only see it through a fan perspective whereas DTS allows you to get the driver’s perspective, but I do plan to finish this off…. eventually….

INT. KITCHEN - MORNING
We see scrambled eggs on a frying pan.
OFF SCREEN:  Daniel? Where is my jumper? The blue one?
The camera zooms out from the eggs to see Daniel, wearing a light blue jumper, grimacing at the camera.
DANIEL: (Under his breath) To be fair it was my jumper first.
The camera swings to Max in the doorway, arms crossed as he narrows his eyes at Daniel.
MAX: I heard that.
(In the garage, during the crash.)
RED BULL TEAM MEMBER #1: Has anyone told Max?
RED BULL TEAM MEMBER #2: We’re not telling him.
RED BULL TEAM MEMBER #3: Seriously?
RED BULL TEAM MEMBER #1: He thinks his husband is dead, we’re telling him!
INT. HOTEL ROOM
PRODUCER: Do you have some fears about allowing the world to know about your relationship?
DANIEL: God, of course I have. We both have. But we spent so long being—not scared, but worried let’s say about the consequences of us just being together. But then Las Vegas happened and all I wanted was Max to sit by my bedside and make a stupid joke about me being in hospital again. And it was when Christian literally had to fight multiple people to get Max into that hospital I realised that what we were doing was unsustainable.
PRODUCER: Unsustainable?
DANIEL: Are you married?
PRODUCER: Yes?
DANIEL: Have you ever watched your partner crash into something at three hundred kilometres an hour and no one telling you if they were even alive? Because I’ve done that. We’ve done that. Multiple times.
Montage of different Max & Daniel accidents.
DANIEL: And then you have to go on with your day, going to debrief, doing press but all you really want to do is go to them and make sure that they’re even alive?
PRODUCER: …
DANIEL: So yeah. Unsustainable.

Daniel talking about his relationship with Max on and off the track:
Q: Do you think it’s been challenging to balance out the relationship given your unique relationship with Max?
Daniel: No, and I think people over dramatise the complexity of it all. I mean sure, it has been somewhat difficult, especially at the beginning but in the end it is just racing, you know? We’re both aware that we are something different from the other drivers, but I like that. Not many people get to do what they love with their partner right next to them, so I definitely take every race we do together for granted.

CUT: Alternate ‘M’ reveal
WHY: I genuinely spent like half an hour thinking if fictional Max and Daniel would show Matilda, I had earlier drafts where they hide her face until I was like okay, this is fictional. Bad things do not exist in this universe, so it’s fine. Plus, Matilda is so cute I can’t hide her.
[Video: Daniel, standing in front of a door.
DANIEL: I know a lot of you guys might have noticed that I’ve been dropping clues towards who this mysterious M is and it’s finally time to reveal who it is.
He opens the door and pans the camera to Max.
DANIEL: M stands for Max. Sorry to break the news, it’s not that exciting. Wait, who’s that?
The camera pans further down to show Max holding a baby, she’s sleeping soundly in Max’s arm.

CUT: The half-completed TIME article about Daniel
WHY: I did not have it in me to write another 1000 word article. I spent around a week just writing Daniel’s The Players’ Tribune article. But what I did write, I did like. Was also around the time TIME named Taylor Swift as their person of the year, so that’s where I got that inspiration.
How 2025 was the year of the Honey Badger—Daniel Ricciardo on winning his first Formula 1 Championship during a historic year.
by Tylda Rune-Liberi for TIME
February 15, 2026 9:33AM EST
It’s 2017 and F1 driver Daniel Ricciardo was asked in a press conference what race he would like the new owners of F1 to host. His answer? Las Vegas. In 2023, five years on, his wish was granted. Two years later, in 2025, the race he had proclaimed as a dream race would turn into stuff of nightmares.
Leading the race and looking like he would take a first win at Las Vegas after a podium in 2023, it looked like everything was going Ricciardo’s way until a bizarre accident with Kick Stake Sauber’s Theo Pourchaire causes a major accident, leaving Ricciardo wedged in the cockpit for over half an hour.
Pourchaire had given way to Ricciardo as he was being lapped, before attempting to unlap himself, choosing the wrong moment as Ricciardo was heading into the pitlane. Radios released after the accident have Pourchaire admit he “didn’t think he was going into the pit lane.”
It’s a horrifying crash to watch—even with the knowledge that both drivers would be okay, and it would soon be clear that no one felt it more in the pitlane than Ricciardo’s own teammate: Max Verstappen.
Formula 1 drivers all drive with the knowledge that a crash could happen at any given moment, but this accident was different.
[Photo: Daniel, in a dark navy denim blue overshirt and jeans.]
Ricciardo and Verstappen have had a long and varied partnership throughout their career, first starting in 2016 where Verstappen was brought up mid season from then-Red Bull junior team Toro Rosso (now Visa Cash App RB), winning his debut race with the team, where it looked like the win would go to Ricciardo instead. They would go on to be teammates for another two seasons, before Ricciardo announced a shocking move to Renault (now Alpine).
One thing that stood out about their initial partnership was how their off track friendship never seemed to waver, even in their most turbulent of times (see Hungary 2017 or Azerbaijan 2018). In an era where friendships between teammates seemed to famously end in failure, in the likes of fan dubbed ‘Brocedes’ (Nico Rosberg & Lewis Hamilton; best friends growing up who’s friendship ended in rivalry fighting for a championship) or former Red Bull teammates Sebastian Vettel and Mark Webber (Multi-21 Seb?), it was an outlier that the two remained such good friends, even after Ricciardo had departed Red Bull.
Even Ricciardo mentions that Lewis Hamilton had gone up to him to ask how Verstappen and Ricciardo had managed to keep their friendship going even though they had tussles on track. “I don’t really know,” Ricciardo says. “I mean it’s definitely all in hindsight now, but I think it was because we—or at least I—knew that our friendship was really important. Like it was no matter what happens I don’t go and screw up this friendship I have with Max.”
Ricciardo would go through a bumpy time in his post-Red Bull career, going through two seasons at Renault, two seasons at McLaren before a 6 month break where he was named ‘Third Driver’ for Red Bull, a 6 month stint in Red Bull sister team AlphaTauri (formerly Toro Rosso, now Visa Cash App RB) which was marked with Ricciardo missing 5 races due to a hand injury during a free practice session in Zandvoort before returning back to the very seat he left six years earlier, Red Bull announcing Ricciardo’s return at the 2023 Las Vegas race.
A move that was then deemed as a surprise move by many pundits, all was put to rest when Riccardo finessed his AlphaTauri in the podium position, grabbing the team 3rd place and their first podium since Pierre Gasly in 2021.
Something was different about this second stint, and it wasn’t the journeys they’ve both gone on since they both parted ways. There was something different about them together.
[Photo: Max and Daniel laughing in the Red Bull garage.]
Nine years on since their first race together, it was oddly reminiscent of their first. Verstappen crossed the line to win a race his teammate had been poised to do so. Only this time, the celebrations were much different.
With Ricciardo in hospital, Verstappen quickly left the race track after a tuned down podium ceremony, skipping out on mandatory post-race media duties, where competitors and team can attract fines for doing so. (The FIA opted not to fine Verstappen and Red Bull in this instance.)
Even during the red flag it was clearly Verstappen was antsy, with his radio calls after finding out his teammate was in an accident conveying his state of worry. Leaked video from inside the Red Bull garage has Verstappen mention not finishing the race, wanting to be by Ricciardo’s side instead.
///
“I remember I posted the post and people were like ‘Oh, maybe he meant it in a friendly way’ and I was like f***, I’ve got to actually spell it out for them.” Hence, the iconic post that broke the F1 world was born.
[Daniel’s tweet.]
It’s 2020, and the Australian Grand Prix has just been cancelled due to COVID.
All the drivers and teams are left scrambling to try and leave the country before the borders close, and Daniel Ricciardo has just invited Max Verstappen to stay over at his house in Perth.
“I don’t think I can even call it a friendly gesture, because as much as I like the other guys on the grid, there’s no way I would’ve invited them over.”
///
“Yeah, I won a championship. But I’m still the same person.”
Ricciardo’s often been somewhat of an open book, he says—whether it was for the better or for the worse. Every aspect of his life has been so highly publicised, from winning races to what it looks like when he’s not, it’s remarkable how he still holds nearly the same candour, even if his name and career has seemingly been dragged through the mud a thousand times over by the media.
Last year he publicly came out in a F1-related podcast, to what he says was very unplanned. “I didn’t plan to come out, let’s say, it just kind of happened.
“I didn’t even plan to come out, let's say, it just kind of happened? I was recording a podcast and I was talking about 2022 and how it unfolded, the support systems around me and I said “my partner”, and a part of me went Oh, shit! I hadn’t talked about my relationships at length before that, and I knew people were going to absolutely run with it and then I was like—well, might as well just go the whole nine yards, so then the second reference to my partner I very deliberately dropped in he. And that was it.”
“I remember so vividly, I went home that night and I told Max, oh I think I did something stupid and his mind immediately went to me accidentally leaking like team secrets or something big like that, and I was like no, I may have accidentally came out and within like three seconds you could see is brain just switch.
“There is no we found the elephant in the room or whatever. The elephant has always been in the room and it’s just decided to make its presence known.”
“Look, I definitely understand some of the criticism that some people may have with F1 or Red Bull or us capitalising on our relationship or whatever, but I think now more than ever there’s a need to perhaps know who the drivers are when they aren’t driving.” Ricciardo adds.
“Because it’s all fine and good if John Smith is winning races and driving amazingly, but if you know next to nothing about the person because it seems like they’re packed up and shipped race to race, you’re not going to root for the guy because they’ve made no connection.”
Ricciardo quickly clarifies that it’s not a negative for sports people or celebrities to maintain their personal lives, but he sees it more as a way to express or show what he wants to show in his own lives. “We spent nearly five years it near complete secrecy from the outside world and whilst I’m not saying that we should’ve just been public right from the start—we probably wouldn’t have survived—I was just wanting to post a photo of Max burning dinner or something and not have gossip magazines or Instagram accounts dissect every pixel of it.”
Did Ricciardo get pushback from the FIA or his team? It’s a difficult question to answer, he tells me. NDAs and whatnot. He says, “The team was wonderful about it, though. Had multiple team members come up to us willingly to fight the higher powers if needed which was very sweet.”
“Let’s just say there were conversations that I had been made aware of that had made me feel like we weren’t even allowed to look at each other when we were in the paddock. I felt like they were asking me to only refer to him as my teammate, stuff along those lines.”
///
“One of our friends told us at our wedding something along the lines of for F1 drivers, you did move pretty fucking slow in your relationship! And Max was like yeah, did you know who we were in 2018?” Ricciardo laughs loudly, scaring one of the cats who seemed ready to take a nap.
///
“I used to rely so much on what other people thought of me, it wasn’t enough that I thought I was the best guy out there, you also had to think I was the best guy out there.”
///
Racing has always been part of Ricciardo’s life, but he doesn’t want it to be the only thing now in his life. He wants you to ask about things not related to racing, like how much he loves his family or how he thinks the Buffalo Bills are the greatest NFL team on earth.
“I’m not going to do this forever, you know?” He says, finishing the can of Red Bull he’d been slowly sipping throughout the course of this piece. “I hope when I look back at these years of my life I’m going to be equally proud of what I did in the car and what I did outside of it.” — With reporting done by Tylda Rune-Liberi and Nicolas St. Revelate.
CUT: Max and the team getting called up to the FIA
WHY: The FIA seems like an organisation who might send me a cease and desist if I wrote them as quietly homophobic. I don’t have money for a lawsuit. Also wanted to keep the universe happy because the real one is not. Still think my Mad Mex reference is funny.

Breaking: Max Verstappen summoned to the stewards after allegedly breaking parc ferme rules.

F1 - 2026 AUSTRALIAN GRAND PRIX - POST RACE PRESS CONFERENCE - TRANSCRIPT
23.3.26
Q: Sorry, Daniel just coming back to you now. We’ve just received word that Max Verstappen has just been summoned to the stewards for breaking parc fermé conditions, any reaction on that?
Daniel RICCIARDO: For what?
Q: Uh, we think it might be related to post race procedures around weighing. Not entirely sure yet, his meeting is at 6:15pm.
DR: Well there goes our dinner plans. To be fair our dinner plans were literally just Mad Mex in our hotel rooms before flying to Perth, but still.
Jack DOOHAN: Mad what?
DR: Mad Mex? You know, the Mexican fast food place. Surely you’ve had it.
JD: Oh, I thought you said Mad Max and I was like, “He finished P4 that doesn’t seem too bad.”
DR: Did Max not do the weigh in or what?
Q: He did, after your podium. Sorry mate, even more bad news for the team, they’ve been summoned to the stewards as well.
DR: If I find out I’m going to lose another podium about ten years on after the race here I’m gonna be pissed.
Q: This one is related to Article 26.13 b, where “Unless authorised by the FIA, no one under the age of 16 is permitted in the pit lane at the following times: b) The period commencing fifteen (15) minutes before the pit exit is opened to allow cars to cover reconnaissance laps and the time when the last car enters the parc fermé after the sprint session or the race has ended.”
DR: What cause we had our daughter with us at the podium celebration?
Q: Quite possibly, yeah.
DR: That’s interesting. I—yeah, I’m just gonna say that’s interesting.
Oscar PIASTRI: Kevin had his kids with him in Monza twenty four, didn’t he?
DR: Yeah, I’m sure the team will have a lot to say so we’ll just leave it at that.
CUT: Reaction to Australia winning

DANIEL: Yeah, I just didn’t think I was able to have this, you know? If you had told me like seven years ago that hey, “You’ll be winning again and Max and your kid will be right along with you”, I would’ve laughed in your face. First photo really Daniel did you have to shame me further . I thought we had a promise. Anyways, here's the video of me meeting them.
[Video: Jake meeting Daniel, in Red Bull hospitality. They’re both sitting down in chairs, and Jake has his hands on top of a frame placed face down on the table.
JAKE: Do you remember like two years ago in COTA you wore a leather jacket outfit and basically the internet blew up because of how good you looked?
DANIEL: Yeah, with the cowboy hat and everything!
JAKE: And there was a tweet that trended on that weekend—
Daniel sits up in his chair, eyes widening in realisation of who Jake is.
DANIEL: Oh my god you’re “Max Verstappen can you fight?” guy?!
JAKE: Embarrassingly, yes.
DANIEL: (offscreen) How did you find him?!
OFFSCREEN: Remember when I said I was going to bring my boyfriend this race?
Daniel looks back and forth behind the person offscreen and Jake multiple times before bending over and laughing hysterically.
OFFSCREEN: Yeah, I’m not happy about it either.
DANIEL: Oh my god did I like cause you two to meet?

CUT: Interview with Lawrence Baretto
WHY: I ran out of time. I had planned to post this at the end of Jan, but since I didn’t post that NYD bonus fic, I didn’t wanna go a month without an update so this got culled. Also my vague illusions to Max’s dad felt a little weird.
Exclusive: Daniel Ricciardo on retirement, 15 years of F1 and family with Lawerence Barretto
When I ask about his daughter and if they have any interest in making her follow in her parents footsteps, he shuts down my line of questioning pretty quickly.
“No,” he immediately says. “I’m not going to write out a path for her to follow, or put expectations for her to go into karting because of a family legacy. I think Max knows it a little bit more than me, how the expectations of someone who’s meant to take care of you can tarnish the thing you love.”
Jos Verstappen, Max’s father and former F1 driver hasn’t been seen in the paddock since 2023. Both declined to comment when asked.
“If she wants to start karting, then we’ll probably have a very long conversation about how it’s important that she finds it fun and if she doesn’t then she doesn’t. It’s not important to me that she wins or whatever, I just want her to enjoy it.”
Chapter five: 2027
CUT: Drive to Survive script
WHY: I did not have the energy to write a full script, and I felt like there were too many events to write about and I could not do it justice. Also I would like idk if Max and Daniel would show Matilda on DTS which is crazy because Matilda is not real…
Drive to Survive
Season 10 Episode 10 “One final rodeo…”
After fifteen years in the sport, Formula 1 says goodbye to Daniel Ricciardo.
[00:20:26]
INT. HOTEL ROOM INTERVIEW
PRODUCER:  We don’t have to talk about Las Vegas.
DANIEL:  No, it's fine. Probably should. Uh—yeah.
PRODUCER:  We can take a minute.
DANIEL:  Yeah, thanks. I didn’t talk about it last year did I?
PRODUCER:  No. Okay, we’ll cut.
CUT TO BLACK.
Sound of car crashing into wall, before it fades in to show the Red Bull in the pitlane wall. Cuts to people reacting—Red Bull employees, fans in the grandstands and then a birds eye aerial view of the crash, showing the medical and extraction crew.
PIERRE HAMLIN (V.O): Daniel, are you okay?
Cuts to Max’s T-CAM footage, him driving past the car.
MAX (V.O): What the fuck happened?
PIERRE: Daniel, please just press the radio button so we know you’re okay.
Cuts to Daniel’s T-CAM footage, his helmet leans against the left side of the halo, indicating he’s unmoving.
PIERRE: Daniel, can you hear me?
Cuts to showing the Red Bull pitwall, everyone looking at each other worried.
DANIEL (V.O): The first thought I had was: Shit. This is really bad timing. Second thought I had was: Max is going to kill me.
Cuts to Daniel's forward facing cockpit onboard, him moving his head and looking up and down the cockpit.
PIERRE: Daniel?
DANIEL: Yep. Fuck. My chest, fuck. Shit, is um the other driver okay?
PIERRE: Yes, he's okay but don't worry about him. Do you think you can get out of the car?
DANIEL: Yeah no, I don't think that's happening with breaking something. Fuck, my ribs. Oh god. I think something's broken.
PIERRE: Okay Daniel, the medical team are nearly there but do not move if you think it will cause more damage. The car is safe, so do not worry about anything else.
DANIEL: Yep, okay. Um, will someone tell Max I'm okay? Just, don't freak him out yeah?
PIERRE: Copy Daniel, it will be okay, it will be okay. Just keep radio on please.
DANIEL: Okay. Fuck, this sucks.
INT. STUDIO
TEXT: Max Verstappen, Red Bull Racing driver
MAX VERSTAPPEN: Been a while.
PRODUCER: Didn’t think you were going to agree.
MAX VERSTAPPEN: Would be a big thing if you made it look like we hated each other again!
PRODUCER: We asked Daniel what his first thought was when he had that accident. He said “This is really bad timing” and that you were going to kill him. Why?
MAX: Well, because of Matilda.
EXT. PORT HERCULES, MONACO— MORNING
Long shot of Port Hercules, Monaco, filmed from a balcony. It’s peaceful, quiet—the city sounds filling the background before we hear a baby scream in joy.
DANIEL: Matilda!
Matilda is on the floor in the living room, on a playmat and she plays with wooden blocks. Max is next to her on the ground, with his back leant against the couch, Daniel is on the couch.
DANIEL (V.O): Yeah, she’s one of the best things to happen to me. For a long time my whole life was just racing, but now she’s my whole life. Like it’s okay if I have a bad race or whatever, I’ve got to move on quickly because she’s there at home waiting.
MAX: Having a kid does change you, I think. Daniel will not say his driving has changed, but it has.
PRODUCER: In what way?
MAX: I think now he is more focused on winning every race, not that he wasn’t before. But because maybe he knows that every race matters more now. You hope that the others around you will not be too reckless so that you can go home after the race.
EXT. CIRCUIT OF THE AMERICAS — MIDDAY
TEXT ON SCREEN: 2025 UNITED STATES GRAND PRIX
RED BULL EMPLOYEE #1: Hey, welcome back Danny!
DANIEL: Thank you, thank you. Hope you didn’t miss my handsome face too much.
RED BULL EMPLOYEE #1: I didn’t know Jake went on holiday!
DANIEL: I’m gonna crash the car just for that.
RED BULL EMPLOYEE #2: No, we’re just kidding. So how’s the baby?
DANIEL: She’s great, do you wanna see a photo?
RED BULL EMPLOYEE #1: Oh, she’s adorable. Matilda was her name?
DANIEL: Yeah, yeah. We had a list but I think Matilda was the only one that stood out to us. She just looks like a Matilda you know?
///
The camera swings to the right, as Daniel’s head sticks out from the door.
DANIEL RICCIARDO: You aren’t talking shit about me, Maxy?
MAX VERSTAPPEN: Of course I am.
///
MAX: I have raced with Daniel in every single year of F1. I think it will be weird.
DANIEL RICCIARDO I think I was a pretty good darn car mechanic.
CUT: Max’s interview with GQ
WHY: If you haven’t learnt by now, I am very lazy. Honestly, I just wanted this chapter out and I knew I didn’t have the time to write a whole article. Also I don’t think Max would be this open about this relationship but maybe Daniel made him more open in this universe. I still stand by the first sentence, it is possibly the truest thing to come out of the fic.
You can’t talk about Max Verstappen without eventually talking about Daniel Ricciardo, and you can’t talk about Daniel Ricciardo without eventually talking about Max Verstappen. This was a true statement in the earlier part of Verstappen’s career, but now perhaps even more so. “He’s made me a much better person,” Verstappen comments when I ask him about his husband. “I maybe wasn’t the best person to be teammates with when I was first in Formula 1, but he stayed friends with me. Even after he left and I was not being nice to him, he still stayed. That was very important to me.”
There’s a certain aura of happiness that comes from Verstappen when he starts talking about Ricciardo, and he says it’s probably one of the most documented love stories of F1.
It started in the early morning after the final race of the 2018 season, and a drunk voicemail to Ricciardo kicked things off. “I was still mad that he was going, and I had too many gin and tonics and I called him at like 12 am or something. Obviously he didn’t answer because he was sleeping but I said really embarrassing stuff in that voicemail.” He left one more a couple hours later, asking Ricciardo not to mention it.
“He really took that to heart.” Verstappen laughs. “I don’t really know why, we would talk when we saw each other on race weekends and pretend that everything was fine between us.”
They were seemingly friends only when it was the race weekend, but off track they had never been further apart. There was a lot of resentment and unsaid conversation from Verstappen’s side, self proclaiming that his stubbornness had put a pin in their relationship. “It’s easy to say now looking back, but I thought Daniel leaving Red Bull was also leaving me. And I didn’t take it well.”
But a little bit of push and shove from his fellow friends made him realise that having Ricciardo in his life was more important than whatever feelings he had towards him leaving.
///
Verstappen proposed two years later in December 2022 at that same house. “Coordinates of the house and everything on the ring,” Ricciardo comments when he drops in to grab something from the office. “Cried like a baby when I realised.”
Deleted Epilogue:
WHY: I still can’t decide if Matilda would go down the F1 path. If she did, she is definitely a Ferrari driver. Just to mess with her dads. I think she would sign with Red Bull in the junior seasons, maybe do two seasons with Red Bull then switch to Ferrari. A Sebastian Vettel if you will…let’s hope it turns out better for her than him.

SKY SPORTS: 2048 AUSTRALIAN GRAND PRIX
David CROFT: And Matilda Verstappen-Ricciardo absolutely sends it down the inside and makes it stick, and what a move! Gosh, I was not expecting her to pull it off but she absolutely does and gets a roar of a cheer from the home crowd, Verstappen-Ricciardo is currently in P3.
Jenson BUTTON: I mean, we should not be surprised. Daughter of Max Verstappen, a six time World Champion and Daniel Ricciardo, another World Champion. A lot of racing talent in that family, I thought the last of the late breakers was Daniel but she has really put a new meaning on late!
DC: And speaking of there is Max and Daniel Verstappen-Ricciardo, who I imagine are probably the most nervous parents in the paddock right now! A lovely nod and clap of encouragement as we watch the reaction of Matilda’s overtake for P3.
matilda verstappen-ricciardo @/MVR
if you’re wondering if it’s embarrassing to have your parents show up at work to congratulate you just wait till one of them interviews you in front of the tv…. thanks dad i’ve never felt so uncool before

POST RACE: PARC FERME INTERVIEW
Daniel RICCIARDO: Matilda!
Matilda VERSTAPPEN-RICCIARDO: Oh my god, please be cool about this.
DR: Just wait till I convince F1 to let me and Max double host it.
MVR: This is actually my worst nightmare. Like maybe three other people will understand what I’m feeling right now.
DR:
///
MVR: I mean I’m not worried about a legacy, if people think I’m here to start or continue a legacy then they can think that, but I’m here to race. Not carry on whatever my parents did.

Do you have any Will content like you have Jontent? After hearing him have to ask are you okay twice I need to know who he is 😭
everything of Will on my blog is tagged as "Will Joseph" or "and Will"
Will is one of Lando's performance/race engineers, a role he shares with Jose and Jarv (who shared with Will in 2019 and is now back to McLaren F1 after other ventures) so they'll be the voices you hear over the radio with Lando
he's been in the sport a long time, he joined McLaren as a build/faults engineer in 2010 and he's been with the team ever since, Lando's 100th race was also Will's 250th :)
Tumblr media
baby pic of Will celebrating what I believe was a Lewis P3 in Bahrain back in 2010
he's also very very good with Lando, he's good at reminding him to drink (because Lando forgets A Lot), he's a good engineer and he's pretty funny, and he's also really good at handling the sass and occasional brat behaviour (affectionate)
Will loves flying and has a pilot license (at least for helicopters anyway) and Lando took him with him when he did a Sky Sports feature with the Red Arrows and Will loved it (plus a bonus jontent pic)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
one of my favourite moments though was Imola last year, where Lando scored the one and only not RB/Ferrari/Merc podium spot and it also happened to be Will's mum's birthday and we got this lovely moment:
and now just for a small collection of old team pics Lando used to take after pretty much every race, Lando would have to lose his shoes (just the rules) and even when Will wasn't there Lucinda got him in the pic

Aisha Campbell known children and oc children. Aisha got done dirty by the franchise. All of the Stone Canyon Trio did, but she was done dirty. At least now we know she did come back from the past fine, and is thriving but…man. She’s a great character and they did nothing new or interesting or explorative with her. And they still really aren’t? Can we get a proper comic for the Stone Canyon Trio that lets them really shine? I’m tired of the ones that seem to then focus on the originals or Matt last minute. Nothing against Matt. At least fanfiction can fix it but still.
Canon Children;
None that we know of
OC Children for Aisha Campbell;
Tommy Oliver;
While Aisha acknowledges Tommy as the leader, she doesn’t let him get away with shit. Uniquely while Kat and Kim and Trini didn’t either, Aisha and Tommy had just enough of a rivalry together that Tommy couldn’t quite dare to pull some things around Aisha. Aisha came after the whole “villain Tommy” and just knew him as the himbo dork who loved his friends and being a power ranger.
They never got married, but they do have kids together. Mostly they live with their lives revolving around each other and their kids, but never quite together together. Aisha didn’t think she could be whatever Tommy was looking for and Tommy knew he wasn’t that for Aisha either. But, they liked each other enough for kids, and they’re still good friends. It’s fairly amicable and flexible. They have twin daughters, Fillipa and Lucinda Campbell, aged sixteen.
Fillipa is older by eight hours. She’s into sword-dancing and gymnastics. Friendly to everyone, but doesn’t let anyone walk over her. Fillipa is the school class president, and helped set up a other species welcoming committee into the school. Other variations of humans, aliens, mutants, magical species, even androids, are welcomed and the committee helps incorporate them into the school into friend groups to encourage fellow classmates and teachers to treat these new classmates as normal people. It’s an uphill battle, but she thinks it’s worth it. Her running mate and best friend is a young Tenga queen named Clack, and both of them believe everyone could benefit from a friendship like theirs. It’s been bumpy but it’s somewhat working. At the very least it seems the current ranger team is made up of a wide range of species, and this makes Fillipa very very happy. Not associated with a color but if she were it’d be yellow.
Lucinda Campbell is a rodeo horseback rider, and does the Indian bareback racing and bronco riding. Aisha saw her daughter fall in love with mechanical bucking bronco rides at the mall, looked over at Tommy and went “if I see her as a red ranger later I’m blaming you.” Lucinda isn’t a red ranger.
She’s a green.
Hilariously neither Tommy nor Aisha seem to have realized this yet. Then again, the most green she wears is a green braided bracelet and socks. She loves her sister, and is grateful to her and Clack for being advocates for normalizing species integration, because she couldn’t possibly ask for a better team. They have each other’s backs, cover for each other, take part and enjoy each other’s hobbies, and she loves them all deeply. This is her team.
She’s not supposed to be doing anything with wild horses; she promised her parents not till she was in her 20’s. She’s also got such a skill with them now that if they saw her they’d instantly know she was a ranger. So, this is also a secret. At least good old uncle David’s willing to keep the secret. And offer advise to the team and his nieces when needed.
Kat Hillard;
Tommy wasn't the one who managed to break Kat out of the mind control; it was Aisha. Aisha and Kat both left the rangers, and Aisha chose Tina as her replacement. They got a job together at the animal shelter, and they adopted several years later as chaos reigned around them. They have one daughter, Natalie, aged fourteen. They adopted Natalie at birth. The girl is wise beyond her years, and often too serious, but she's also got wells of dry humor and likes teasing her moms. not associated with a color, probably better off for it.
Kimberly Hart;
They quickly became fast friends, and Aisha caught feelings for the pink really really quickly. However, she didn't say anything until Kim left the rangers and was replaced by Kat. She was going on scholarship, and they started a long distance relationship. Eventually they got married after Aisha herself retired from rangerdom. Together with Anubis Cruger, they founded SPD. The wives have one son, a wild card named Benedict "Ben" Campbell. Aged 24. Benedict is currently in Ranger Academy, and has broken nearly every rule so far. Just for fun, just to see what'll happen. He's not a bad guy, he just simply wants to test limits. Of both himself and the world around him. When he graduates school he will be a Pink Ranger on D Team.
Adam Park;
It was just natural for them to get together. They’ve been friends together since forever, they’ve always been friends and it progressing to a little bit more made sense. They got married a little after joining SPD together. They have four kids together. Wendell, aged 26, Rocky, aged 26, Koniqua, aged 19, and Jacqueline “Jaq” Park, aged 17.
No way they weren’t going to name one of their kids after their closest friend aside from each other. Rocky was best man at their wedding even. When they found out they were having twins they simply used the middle name they were intending for a boy for Wendell. Rocky’s the older by eight hours, Wendell was a more difficult pregnancy and took his time, which actually was a foreshadowing to the twins’ personalities.
Rocky Park is rambunctious and a goofball. He loves making people laugh. Like his mom he’s empathetic and strong willed. Like his dad he’s prone to flashes of intense introspection, but never for long. Surprises people with his love of classical music. He’s enthusiastic to the point of being intense. Can be hard for him to dial it back. He’s a yellow ranger for his team.
Wendell is everything Rocky is not, and is a little bit of a little shit. He's often not noticed by other people, and tends to use that to his advantage. He knows his brother is a yellow ranger, and while he's not a ranger, he takes the opportunity to tackle or ram cars or steal from the monsters of the week. he's not noticed and it gives other rangers openings usually. He's given Rocky everything he's stolen, and is pleased when they're incorporated into the team's arsenal.
Koniqua is a lover of poetry, fables, and the history of the power rangers. She's determined to be one of the scientists who creates a new team, or unlocks the mysteries of the grid for general use. Pragmatic, quick thinking, happy to help her dumb brothers. They don't think she knows. She knew who'd saved her as soon as Rocky said "you're safe now civilian" and tried to act dumb. She barely resisted the urge to call him out. Doesn't bother fighting the monsters, her brothers got that covered, but she does help get other civilians to safety when needed. not associated with a color. She's going into historical costuming, with the intention of working for tv productions.
Jaq would love to know why earth is so valuable to bad guys that they keep trying to take it over. Genre savvy type, and doesn't take shit. Has psyched out two villains and one of the comedy duo by just asking over and over "okay but why". Not popular, has two best friends and they're all kind of outsiders. Prefers it this way. You will not find Jaq anywhere near the monsters when they appear, she's gone and dragging her friends off with her. not associated with a color, but has made the big bad main villain question themself and then cry. her brother was torn between disappointed, impressed, and terrified of his little sister. Jaq's considering maybe being a therapist specializing in rangers and their villains would be a lucrative career move.
Rocky DeSantos;
Rocky and Aisha fit well. She gets his humor, he knows how to match her energy and keep her from burning the wick at two ends. So when they got together nobody was remotely surprised. They have two kids, one naturally and one adopted. Landon, aged 12, and Saffie, aged 14.
Landon's been with Rocky and Aisha since he was three, and he's been really happy with them for as long as he can remember. He's a bit of a bookworm, but mostly prefers nonfiction. If he has to read fiction, it's nothing sci fi related. It bothers him too much when they get simple things you can look up wrong. Like what Tenga Warriors look like, or what space ships need for fuel. Or planets earth trades with. He likes spicy food, and birds. He probably knows more about bird related aliens than the average human. Doesn't know what he wants to be when he grows up, but he does know he wants a parrot. His parents are trying to convince him to choose a bird with a shorter lifespan. He and his sister have a very kind spirited joking relationship. They don't feel like they aren't actual siblings, and he's as protective of her as he likes being a mild pest to her now and then, and she him. Not associated with a color.
Saffie was a surprise baby. Aisha and Rocky had been trying for a kid for a while at this point, and nobody was sure why it just wasn't happening. When they applied for adoption, Saffie was conceived. They still went through with the adoption, and are glad they did, and Saffie is too. She loves Landon a lot, and they have a fairly healthy sibling relationship. Saffie's not exactly a social butterfly, but she's by no means a wallflower either. She keeps to herself, and likes skateboarding and parkour and rock music. Being able to brag about the fact she knows the Skullovitchs personally and she sometimes gets babysat by Eugene Skullovitch's son? Oh it's amazing. Cheeky, high energy, and knows what she wants in life. She's dancing to the beat of her own drum, and is quite happy doing so. Likes reading poetry, a lot, and diy'ing her own clothes (she is not allowed near bleach dye for her jeans after an incident of not screwing the lid on tightly enough and leaving it on the living room floor. Fabric paint is still okay, though). Rocky and Aisha are a little confused by some of her interests, but then she turns around and is so much like both of them they have to laugh. Saffie's just Saffie. Not associated with a color.
Jason Lee Scott;
Surprising everyone, including himself, Billy was chosen for the peace conference, not Jason. Rocky became the blue mighty morphin, and Jason struggled with the new dynamic. He often butt heads with Aisha, who stood up for Adam and Rocky against the Red when her boys wouldn't. Adam, Rocky, and Aisha became a throuple, but Aisha also married Jason, who while he did have to get used to it, likes Rocky and Adam as friends and paramours, and likes that Aisha is happy. Together, Aisha and Jason have one son, Seth Landon Scott, aged seventeen.
Seth is not a ranger, and he's not interested in being a ranger. He's more interested in being a park ranger for national parks. Any would do, just so he can be out in nature. He's not really interested in the ocean, and is far more interested in forests and mountains. strong willed, stubborn, imaginative, and happy to help. Is friends with a lot of rangers and ranger's kids, but, he's happy not being a ranger despite their not so subtle recruitment efforts.
Farkas Bulkmeier;
Nobody saw this coming. However, he invited her to a dance, and she didn’t say no. Then they just saw each other as friends for a few years. New Year’s party and nine months later….well. Actually they work well together, who knew? Bulk can make Aisha laugh, and she helps him set more realistic goals. And they kick ass together. Recently divorced but not on bad terms. Hobart “Hobie” Bulkmeier, though…is struggling. New purple ranger, parents recently divorced, trying to keep grades up and a steady job on top of it? This is. A Lot. He’s a ballet instructor for a babies first ballet type class. Does not put up with bullshit for anything. Not afraid to call people out. He’s dating the green ranger and that’s fine, his parents like his boyfriend. It’s just everything on top of everything on top of everything. Has a bit of an anger issue but he is stressed out. Doesn’t really know how to talk about it, either. He’s usually a very upbeat, positive, and easy going kid. But everything has happened within six months of each other and if he doesn’t get a day off he’s going to blow. His parents are trying but they don’t know how to help if he doesn’t talk to them. He needs a weekend with his boyfriend and no life or death situations for five minutes if you so please.
Eugene Skullovitch;
She asked him out and he thought it was a joke. It wasn't. They found they actually challenge each other in interesting ways. She also hates his mom and her parents love him, so that helped a lot. They've got a daughter, Kensie Campbell. Aged 15. Excitable by nature, is in the drama club. Has a near perfect memory, uses this for shenanigans, mostly when sassing her many many honorary aunts and uncles or annoying villains and monsters. Eugene is so, so proud. Aisha sometimes worries the know it all attitude is going to get her in trouble. However, nothing's happened-yet-and Kensie does seem to slowly be learning how to read the room. She plays piano to help her think. Her favorite is moonlight sonata. It partially annoys Skull, but his favorite composer is Bach, so it's more of a principle thing. Kensie is a soccer player, and has a very close best friend. Skull's getting the "what to in case you're kidnapped by a monster with your best friend" speech ready, just in case a group of crime fighting teenagers with attitude show up. not associated with a color
Scorpina;
When Scorpina pretended to be human, she befriended Rocky, Adam, and Aisha. When the boys fought over her, ‘Selena’ decided to have Aisha as a guide. Although Aisha didn’t trust her and was proven right; There was such an immediate bond it became a matter of contention. Aisha saw through the disguise and decided to make Scorpina regret it, by giving her a reason to be a good person. It worked a little too well, and the two began a very angsty situationship where they had to fight the person they loved most. Constantly. Scorpina couldn't take it anymore, and tricked Aisha into submitting to a mind control for a time so Scorpina wouldn't have to choose between her cause and her girlfriend. The others did break the spell, but Aisha did choose to stay for a while, just to stick with Scorpina. They're not together anymore, but Scorpina did have a daughter with Aisha. Aurellia, aged 19. Aurellia is a warrior and has been in Rito's employ for about two years, but she does want to join her other mom. She wants to know Aisha better, aside from the tense and brief interactions the small family has on her birthday. She wants her moms to reconcile, but is coming to the conclusion that this won't happen. So, she's doing her best as she is, in her current situation. Is a gold ranger.
Rito Revolto;
Aisha can barely stand Rito, but has to acknowledge he's not as stupid or simple or silly as those he loves considers him as. When he lost his memories, Bulk and Skull let it slip to her. Aisha rightfully flipped out on them, but kept it more in the "you turned two people with amnesia into your unpaid SERVANTS?!" and when they thought about it, yea, that....was not a good look. Aisha's plan was redeeming Goldar and Rito while they'd be amenable to actually listening to the reasons for why. She was right, he wasn't dumb, and once he had a little bit of context realized she was the yellow ranger. Rito watched all the carnage and realized the little yellow ranger was right. And when he got his memories back, still agreed she was right. They have one daughter, Phoebe Revolta, aged 22. Phoebe doesn't get along with her cousins Thrax and Selena very much, but she does for the sake of her dad. He believes he can help redeem his niece and nephew, she's not going to argue with this. She's getting pretty upset though, that Grandpa Vile keeps trying to push her dad into teaching her dark arts when Phoebe couldn't be less interested. Wants to be a poet, just trying to get through school. One one side she’s got the Power Rangers on the other she’s got Rita, Zedd, their nightmares, and Vile. Aisha’s become the bane of Vile’s existence on behalf of her daughter and partner. Unfortunately, the mystic side of the family likes causing trouble. Rito’s been unable to get rid of them, so he’s tried to make the best of it, unfortunately for Aisha and Phoebe.
Matthew Cook:
They sort of got together because they just happened to be in each other's vicinity. Everyone was pairing up and they sort of fell into each other as a matter of convenience. They got married, and they're content. They have one kid, Isaiah Cook, aged 16. Aisha and Matthew decided to help Grace and Terona with ranger things, including making a homebrew team such as the Mutant Rangers or Dark Rangers. They're often gone training their teams they've created for the military, much to Isaiah's chagrin.
Isaiah is rebellious in the fact that they know that the best way to get their parents attention is go on about how much they do not want to be involved with power rangers or villains or the comedy duo. Their aunt is the one raising them for the most part, and they travel around America during the long stretches Matt and Aisha aren't around. Isaiah is happy being the background character of their own life. They're just happy to do as much as they can and experience as much as possible, they've only got one life and it's better spent not wasted. And power ranger related shenanigans is wasting it. Currently hoping to be a plumber or go into textile art. They have the skills with both. Isaiah is not associated with a color. If they were, it'd be yellow.

The last two stages of the Vuelta a Burgos Fémina seemed almost inevitable, but how we got there was a bit more complicated.
Stage 3 was for the sprinters, and after her team did its work to place her in the bunch, Lorena Wiebes (SD Worx-Protime) shot out like an arrow, easily putting almost three bike lengths ahead of the rest. There's no dispute, Wiebes is the best sprinter in the world right now, full stop.
Tumblr media
Stage 4 saw a similar display of dominance by Wiebes' teammate, Demi Vollering. It was a chilly and rainy day that must have been pretty uncomfortable on the bike, but Vollering didn't let it slow her down. Or, at least, we assume, because the bad weather prevented the aerial relay of pictures until the final 10k, when Vollering was already solo with a sizeable lead on the descent. Lucinda Brand (Lidl-Trek) was chasing, but she was no threat on GC after losing 3 minutes when she stopped to attend teammate Elisa Balsamo, who crashed at high speed on Stage 1.
Tumblr media
Evita Muzic and Karlijn Swinkels were close behind, cementing their podium places. But Vollering was a cut above. She's the best climber in the world right now, and the rest of the peloton has its hands full to combat her dominance in stage races.

Part 1 Headcanons for MySt: Ro'Meaves
Headcanons for MyStreet So I fucking love giving these guys headcanons, and I was originally just going to do all of my favorite neglected blorbs, but I decided to split it up into people that hang out/family. So first up is the Ro'Meaves and their problems. Vylad is travelling the world rn, good for him. He comes home every once in a while and when he does, Garroth bursts into tears because the last time he saw him was two Christmases ago and he can't stand the thought of Vylad leaving again. Vylad feels uber guilty about staying over at his brothers' places, so he decides to sleep on the streets half of the time. Sometimes the Shadow Knights (household) finds him and takes him in for the night. Zane, being on neighborhood watch, sometimes finds him too. Vylad went no-contact with his parents a long time ago, but he has tried to go no-contact with Garroth and Zane, but he continues to message them back when his phone is on. He has stayed in many homes across the world and kinda considers the Shadow Knight household to be his "American Home". He doesn't want to settle down because he doesn't feel as if he belongs somewhere. Zane doesn't feel like he needs to connect with Vylad or Garroth because he constantly was ignored and thought he was going to fail from the beginning. His mom really does love him and tries to support him, but Zane cannot stand the "I support you, but" from her. He cut off Garte a long time ago, because he never truly loved him as a son. Zane also does hang out with Laurance, but it's only to go to Pride and watch Drag Race or other Drag related things. Laurance is a Drag queen, so Zane goes to a few of his gigs here and there. Zane is a witch, who he works with if anyone, I'm not exactly sure, but maybe Loki? He knows he won't ever be a witch like Lucinda, but she's a great help when she's awake-- Although Zane says he hates Garroth, and to a degree he does, at the end he does care for him. He has a hard time accepting Vylad, especially when Vylad isn't around half of the time. Zane is also the only one who knows that Aaron is a gorgon. Garroth is trans, and his parents only accepted him because it would give Garte a first born son. Garroth has kept this fact hidden from everyone on the street aside from Zane (bc they're brothers? He would know). He decided that he didn't want to deal with being apart of the LGBTQ community when he was young, so he just pretended his feelings about sexuality didn't exist. He continues to push off Laurance and his advances because he doesn't want to admit to his parents that he might not be the straightest man in the world. When he got top surgery, he had to ask Zane to pick him up because he forgot to ask someone else and he didn't want to get found out, so out of whatever kindness Zane has in his heart, he picked up his loopy-ass brother and took him home and took care of him. Garroth is the only one of the brothers that actually tries to care about his parents, but he knows that some day he will probably have to let them go. All of the brothers went to a private school for a long while, eventually were homeschooled for a bit, and finally when they all reached Freshman level education, they could choose to go a public school, private, or continued to be homeschooled. When they all had the chance, they went to a public school. The three of them never really knew anyone else in childhood, so when Garroth and Zane went to FalconClaw University, Garroth tried to make them both as many friends as they could and also reconnect with the few people they met in Highschool.

OFFSCREEN POST
A Bridge Between Worlds: Part Two | Final Part
Lucario stumbles out of the fog, breath heavy as he finally steps onto the solid earth. He made it. He didn’t turn around. He’s fine. He’s vaguely aware of the fact he had been crying for about half of the experience that was the bridge. He shouldn’t let Bingo see that. She’d ask what’s wrong, and he’d have to come up with some excuse or dodge the question.
Speaking of Bingo, where… was she? She’d been pushed onto the Bridge first, why wasn’t she here? He can’t sense her. Where is she? He turns around, looking back to the fog. Shit. Fuck. NO! After every horrible thing he’d seen and heard on the bridge, after every single memory he’d been forced to confront, it was for nothing. Bingo was trapped in the fog. His entire plan, gone in an instant. His one chance to fix things, ruined. All because of a FUCKED UP BRIDGE. He starts to laugh. No, not laugh. Cackle. After having every choice you’ve ever made laid out in front of you followed by what is essentially your daughter now just dying and you having no clue, what the fuck else are you supposed to do? He collapses, curling in on himself as cackling turns to sobs. Everything has gone wrong in just one instant.
“Mister Lucario, are… you okay…?”
Lucario scrambles to uncurl and look behind him, wiping away the tears. There he sees Bingo, completely fine, not even slightly stressed out by the fog. “I’m fine. I thought you didn’t make it,” he says, shakily.
“Oh… I’m okay, Mister Lucario!” Bingo slowly steps forward, gesturing to the fog with her tail, “The Voice made sure I was safe… and that I didn’t stop or turn around.”
“Th– The voice? The voices didn’t try t’make you turn around?” Lucario asks, clearly trying to make it look like he was not just having a mental breakdown.
The Lillipup awkwardly shook her head, attempting to not address the elephant in the room that was Lucario crying, “No. She made sure I kept goin’. And there was only one Voice.”
“Only one–” Lucario is cut off by the sound of massive wing beats as Cyclone bursts through the fog, flying overhead. As she stops flapping her wings and falls into a steady glide, the sound of a Pokemon singing becomes clear. “Rumble, tumble, great big trouble, a dark storm’s on its way! Lightning flash and thunder crash, much to the town’s dismay! So grab that horse and pull those reins, there's no time to delay~ay! Racing through the streets of town, here comes Lucinda Gray!” the voice sings. As Cyclone flies farther and farther away, the song continues, growing quieter with each word until it can no longer be heard and the Mandibuzz is a far speck on the horizon. The voice in the fog…

hey guys! here’s a snippet from chapter 3 of my dorlene fic ‘Only The Good Die Young’ on ao3. chapters 3 and 4 are out rn :)
The game began again, Gryffindor team in high spirits and Emma had the quaffle, she began to race towards the hoops when out of the corner of her eye…Yes! It was the snitch. Marlene had seen the snitch. She reached out to grab it, her finger tips stretching towards it, they brushed the top of it and…it flew through her fingers.
It flew behind her and she turned her broom around at breakneck speed, eyes fixed on the small golden ball. It twisted and turned, veering left and right and Marlene fought to keep up with it, ending up upside down on her broom at one point and nearly careening into the stands at another. This endless game of cat and mouse was making her exhausted and soon, something was going to give and Marlene thought it was going to be her. But she wouldn’t give up, she couldn’t. James was one reason and another was…well, she really wanted to prove to everyone she was just as good a seeker as Dorcas Meadowes.
She was getting closer now, flying with an outstretched hand in front of her and…she stopped. In the middle of the air, she just stopped. Because Dorcas Meadowes was sitting in the stands in front of her. She was sitting on her own, wearing black trousers and a blue long sleeved top and jewellery, a gold ring threaded through her nose. Her hair was twisted up into a bun with her wand and she was wearing the Doc Marten boots she always wore.
She was holding a notepad and pen and was focusing intently on the game, legs crossed. She was looking at all the other players, James and Dirk and Davey and Bertha and Lucinda and Emma but not her. Dorcas Meadowes wasn’t looking at Marlene McKinnon. Her dark skin glittered in the sun and Marlene began to breathe heavily. She wanted Dorcas to look at her and smirk, snigger, anything. She just wanted her to look at her.
Suddenly, she remembered where she was. The golden snitch flew in front of her face and she grasped at it but too late. It started to fly down and she pushed her broom towards it, whistling towards the ground faster than light. She flew faster and faster and faster, too fast to stop before she hit the ground. She reached out her hand and… it closed around the little golden ball.

Princess Anne
Horse & Hound | Published 13 August 2020
“IT was a fairy story ending,” read the 1971 Horse & Hound report of the Princess Royal’s victory at the European Championships at Burghley. “Of course, everyone knows now that Princess Anne won the individual championship, but only those who were there can appreciate the extent of the popularity of her victory, or the tension that gripped the thronged arena during her jumping round on Sunday.”
The reporter WW Thomson’s gushing account of the 21-year-old’s performance aboard Doublet perhaps reflected a nation gripped by this sporting tale; a rapid rise to the top, a home-bred destined to be a polo pony and a mother who happened to be The Queen.
Tumblr media
“This really was a fabulous event. The Queen and Prince Philip were there, the weather was right, the winners were right, and Princess Anne not only beat the best in Europe, but trounced them,” it read.
In the following decade, the Princess was on the podium at another European Championships with a different horse, at an Olympic Games and in the top 10 of the world’s biggest four-stars, silencing any sceptics who’d wondered if Burghley had been a chance feat.
“It was very new really, having a woman royal doing such a tough sport,” reflects her fellow competitor and former team-mate Lucinda Green. “Not long before, eventing was considered a man’s sport. She was more than up to the task of eventing, but she just had to deal with the press, which is never easy. In retrospect she did our sport a huge service.”
FOR someone barely out of teenage-hood when she reached the sport’s highest echelons, the Princess’ start in the saddle was refreshingly low-key, with ponies turned out rugless and ridden straight from muddy fields.
The setting was, of course, grander than most – Windsor, Sandringham and Balmoral served as sprawling riding schools, and early equestrian thrills came from riding in her grandmother’s carriage to watch Trooping the Colour on Horse Guards Parade. But there was also an unremarkable Shetland (Fum), a hefty Welsh pony who stood on her toe (Kirby Cane Greensleeves) and humiliating bending races on the 13.2hh Bandit.
By the time she was riding the 14.2hh Watersmeet High Jinks, who was stabled at the Moat House riding school in Kent during her last year of boarding school, there was no escaping her gilded status.
On one occasion, workmen spotted the Princess’s policeman leaning against the end of the school, before calling out “‘Oi! You!... Are you royalty or something? Why’s that man watching you?” she recalls in her 1991 autobiography Riding Through My Life.
“At the age of 16 or 17 you’re not terribly ready with an instant repartee to queries like that, so I replied, ‘Well, yes, I am.’”
Competition discipline and manners were instilled by the riding school’s owner Cherry Hatton-Hall, one of many who helped shape the Princess’s eventual prowess. Before the Princess and her older brother were competent enough to ride with The Queen, Her Majesty would impart knowledge from her bicycle as she rode alongside them. And then there was the groom Frank Hatcher at Windsor, who was a stickler for ensuring feet were picked out and tack was on correctly.
But it was perhaps Alison Oliver (see box, above) who was the vital piece in the puzzle that enabled Princess Anne to transition from a horse-mad schoolgirl to a sportswoman riding for Britain in just three years.
“I was very fortunate to be in the right place at the right time,” says Alison about her royal student. “We just clicked.”
Tumblr media Tumblr media
WHEN the Princess realised that a conventional career didn’t seem viable on leaving school, she was determined to channel her energy into doing something well – and the answer was equestrian sport.
As Mary Gordon-Watson, who was part of the British team at the 1971 Europeans, says: “She was obviously very determined and hard-working, like she is in everything that she does. She wanted to succeed, and she did, at the highest level.”
At first, the Princess was lured by the prospect of polo; riding her father’s ponies had given her a taste of the competitive spirit of horses. But it was the combination of being lent the crown equerry Lt Col Sir John Miller’s horse Purple Star, who sparked her interest in horse trials, and being sent to Alison Oliver’s stables at Warfield in Berkshire, that meant that an eventing career was set.
By the time she won gold at Burghley in 1971, she’d ridden at just two other-three-day events, but it was soon obvious that this was no flash in the pan.
“You couldn’t fail to be impressed when she achieved success all over again [at subsequent championships] with Goodwill, who was a totally different type of horse,” adds Mary.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
“From Doublet, Princess Anne went to a veritable hurricane in Goodwill,” says Lucinda about the difference in the Princess’ two championship rides; the first who was bred as a polo pony was polite and willing, and the latter was a famously strong former showjumper.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
“If Doublet had turned up later in my career, we would all have looked at him and said: ‘What’s that?’,” the Princess told Eventing magazine about the gelding who The Queen had bred out of an Argentine mare and on whom Prince Philip had played polo.
“It was only because he came along at such an early stage in my life and because he was home-bred that he got his chance to be an eventer at all.”
In contrast, she remembers Goodwill as “nearly everybody’s idea of the ideal type of event horse… with excellent conformation, strong, active paces and well-developed jumping muscles”.
The pay-off for this raw talent, however, was having to learn to adapt to the gelding’s strength.
“Dressage was largely a case of containment,” she admitted.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
AT the 1973 Europeans in Kiev, the Princess’ and Goodwill’s appearance came to an abrupt end when she fell at the second fence.
But out of the saddle there was also her own high profile to contend with; a bugging device was found in her hotel room telephone, and on one occasion she was accosted with outstretched arms by an over-friendly hotel maid.
“She might have mistaken me for somebody else, somebody more famous like Lucinda Prior-Palmer for instance, but then we shall never know,” quipped the princess.
At the Europeans in Luhmühlen two years later, she was subjected to press speculation that Goodwill’s good dressage score was the result of doping, when what they had in fact seen was Capt Mark Phillips giving the horse a sugar lump before the test.
This angst – combined with waking up on cross-country morning with a cold – didn’t detract from her performance. She clinched the individual and team silver medals, a triumph she looks back on with greater satisfaction than her gold four years earlier.
“By that stage, everything that could have gone wrong had done, and I’d started again,” she told Horse & Hound.
However, it was at the Montreal Olympics the following year that the Princess was given a stark reminder of the levelling nature of the sport.
Tumblr media
With her parents and three brothers watching on, concussion after a fall on cross-country day meant that she was even stripped of the satisfaction of remembering finishing the course. But her upbringing had armed her with an enviable sense of perspective and the luxury of being able to see her sport as a hobby.
“I had other things to do that would not be affected by my performance, good or bad,” she reminisced in her autobiography.
The following year, her son Peter was born, and although she went on to finish sixth at Badminton in 1979, no more championships beckoned. For over a decade, however, whether photographed with a medal around her neck, or dusting herself off after hitting the turf, the media – and public – were captivated. Eventing had been dealt an ace card.

Honoring a Trailblazer: Dr. Harriet Rice, Class of 1887, the first African American woman to graduate from Wellesley
Cleo Hereford ’09
As presented by Hereford during the Wellesley Alumnae of African Descent Annual Meeting on Sunday, June 25, 2023.
____
During this year’s annual meeting, we wanted to highlight a true trailblazer - Dr. Harriet Rice, the first African American woman to graduate from Wellesley College. Rice was born just one year after the Civil War ended in 1866 in Newport, Rhode Island to father George, a steward for the Newport Steamship Company and mother Lucinda. A talented student, Rice achieved the highest class ranking in Greek at Newport’s racially integrated Rogers High School. After graduating in 1882, she matriculated at Wellesley a year later and was one of only three black students. One can only imagine what it was like to be a black woman at Wellesley during the 1880s but College archives do provide some insight. In 1935, the Alumnae Association sent Dr. Rice a biographical sheet asking about physical or other handicap to which she responded “Yes! I’m colored which is worse than any crime in this God blessed Christian country!”
Tumblr media
Nevertheless, she persisted.
After receiving her degree from Wellesley in 1887, Rice, following in her brother’s footsteps, earned a medical degree from the Women’s Medical College of the New York Infirmary for Women and Children in 1891 at a time when few women pursued medicine. She then sought additional training while interning at the New England Hospital for Women and Children. Her advanced medical training is especially notable when one considers that up to 1904 only half of all medical graduates of any race or gender received postgraduate training making Dr. Rice a highly qualified physician.
As expected, given the post Reconstruction time period, black physicians faced rampant racism and discrimination often relegated to only working with black populations while female doctors, including white women, were often denied appointments at hospitals due to gender based discrimination. Rice was amongst only the second generation of black female physicians but also female physicians in general in the country. (For those interested, Rebecca Lee Crumpler was the first African American woman to become a formerly-trained physician receiving a medical degree in 1864). By 1896, there were just 115 Black female doctors in the country.
Despite this, she forged ahead determined to be a successful physician. Though largely prohibited from practicing medicine in any American hospital as an African American woman, she found a way to utilize her skills providing medical treatment and care to low income individuals at Hull House, an organization offering a variety of social services, on Chicago’s Near West Side. It was in Chicago where Rice worked alongside famous social worker, women’s suffrage leader and first American woman to receive the Nobel Peace Prize, Jane Addams. Much different than the Chicago we know today, however, only 1.3% of Chicago’s population in the 1890s was black and Rice faced discrimination, particularly from Hull House’s white European immigrant clientele (black residents were limited to residence on the South Side, far from Hull House). Further, working at the settlement house offered little in the way of financial compensation, upward mobility or recognition for Rice; at one point, she was listed as a secretary at the organization when she was in fact running the medical clinic. Rice sought other professional opportunities and, in 1897, she became the only doctor at the Chicago Maternity Hospital and Training School for Nursery Maids providing obstetric care.
After years working in the medical field in Chicago and later Boston, Dr. Rice opted to serve on the frontlines as a military physician for three years during World War I. Throughout the war, which lasted from 1914 through 1918, women of color contributed to the effort both as individuals and through organizations such as the YMCA. At the start of the war, Rice attempted to join the American Red Cross effort to provide medical services to American troops but was ultimately denied because of her race. Again, she persisted contacting the French government who leapt at the opportunity to have an experienced medical doctor available to treat French troops. Joining the effort at 49 years old, Rice served on hospital duty in France from January 1915 until just after Armistice in 1918, longer than most American troops. This period in Rice’s life finally afforded her the opportunity to both practice medicine and be recognized for her work, opportunities that had previously alluded her. As a result of American racism, she made important contributions to the Allied war effort, not under the American flag, but the French. In 1919, Rice was awarded the Medal of French Gratitude at the French Embassy in Washington, DC for outstanding service in French military hospitals treating wounded soldiers. The medal was specifically created to express gratitude by the French government to non-military participants who, in part, had performed an act of exceptional dedication in the presence of the enemy during the war. After returning home, Dr. Rice continued to work in medicine before retiring in West Somerville, MA.
Dr. Harriet Rice, Class of 1887, passed away in 1958 at age 92 in Worcester, MA and is buried in Newport, RI alongside her parents in the God’s Little Ace section of the Common Burying Ground. She is remembered as “a woman of valor.”

The fact that Charlotte still loves Lando, her post when he got the podium this year, she follows his photo account, was appaerntly one of the first ones to do so,,,
I can't Wait for her reaction to his first win. It'll be epic. I Hope its a w series race so she can be there.
She, Helen and Lucinda took great of Lando, when they were at McLaren (Lucinda still does)... They love him so much, I remember Helen's post when Sochi happened... Also there were rumours that it was helen who posted that Alpline tweet during Barcelona about Lando being ill, that got deleted as she was pissed.
The hug between Charlotte and Lando in Miami because W Series were there too makes my heart squeeze, and her post about his podium was so sweet. As I said before, she's been such a huge cheerleader for him since he started with McLaren, and I sometimes forget that Lando was 18 (actually younger when he won the McLaren drive). He was barely legally an adult and she stepped into that sort of mum role that he needed, not to baby him but to be that unwavering support, so her continuing to be a huge supporter for him makes sense and yet is still so lovely to see
Even if it's not, McLaren best get her a private jet and fly her over immediately so she can join the party
Lando is just incredibly endearing, it's no wonder he attracts pseudo grid parents or older sibling figures. I was devastated about Charlotte leaving McLaren until I saw more of Lucinda and saw he was still in safe hands. I don't have Twitter so I never saw that Alpine tweet, but that sounds like something I would do so I wouldn't be surprised

Jasper Weatherby's grandpa worked with Martin Luther King Jr., his grandmother marched in Selma, now he hears his calling
Jasper Weatherby remembers the conversation.
His brother, Kevin, was about to make a cross-country drive from their father Dicken's home in Vermont to their mother Lucinda's home in Ashland, Ore., for the first time.
Before hitting the road, Dicken sat Kevin down to have an important talk.
He told Kevin to be extremely careful on his drive and instructed him, if he gets pulled over by an officer, to make sure his hands are in full view at all times. He gave him a general idea of which towns to stop in, and said to be careful even when filling up with gas.
It caught Jasper's attention, because he had driven across the country numerous times during his hockey-playing career. He had completed that Oregon-to-Vermont journey himself. But nobody told him these things.
"The only thing my dad ever said to me was 'don't speed,'" said Jasper, a junior center on UND's hockey team.
Jasper knew why things were different, though.
He's white. Kevin is Black.
Although brothers have grown up together since the Weatherbys adopted Kevin 16 years ago, Jasper is keenly aware of prejudices and racial inequities that exist in America, and why things can be different for them.
"Kevin is the friendliest guy you'll ever meet," Jasper said. "He's the nicest guy I know. When I was young, I was oblivious to a lot of stuff, because I never understood why anyone would treat us any different.
"Our dad is such a good dad and cares so much that he thinks about those things. But it's messed up that he has to say that. That hit home for me. I thought, 'How am I going to help this? Am I going to do something more?'"
Since the death of George Floyd in Minneapolis police custody in May, Weatherby's normally quiet Instagram feed has been filled with posts and stories supporting racial justice and the Black Lives Matter movement.
He participated in a Black Lives Matter march in Grand Forks. He visited Floyd's memorial in Minneapolis to pay his respects. He protested back home in Ashland, Ore. He has tweeted support for the movement and has led discussions among his UND teammates.
Few college hockey players have been as outspoken as Weatherby this summer. And if you know his life story, his family's history, you understand that Weatherby has been raised for this moment, shaped by civil rights fighters that line his family tree.
Weatherby's grandfather, Ralph Temple, fled the Nazis as a 7-year-old Jewish boy growing up in London. In America, he became a civil rights lawyer, who fought Jim Crow in the courtroom, became a member of the NAACP Board of Directors, worked underneath Thurgood Marshall at the Legal Defense Fund and alongside Martin Luther King Jr., on a couple of cases.
Weatherby's grandmother, Ann Macrory, was a pioneering civil rights lawyer, who participated in the famous Selma to Montgomery march, stood in the National Mall watching King give his 'I Have a Dream' speech and fought for things such as housing equality and immigrant rights.
His mother, Lucinda, grew up in Washington, D.C., protested apartheid at the South African embassy and successfully lobbied her high school to divest from any companies that had South African ties.
And there's his brother, Kevin, who the family adopted at age 8 from Costa Rica. Through DNA and ancestry research, they determined that Kevin is the descendant of an enslaved African from Nigeria, who was taken to Jamaica.
They've all had significant influences on Jasper, who hopes to use his platform as an NHL draft pick of the San Jose Sharks and a key player on UND's No. 1-ranked team to shine a light on race issues and make any advances possible.
"My grandma always said, 'It's never the wrong time to do the right thing,'" Jasper said.
Fleeing the Nazis
Jasper's grandfather, Ralph Temple, was dodging bombs at age 7.
Growing up in London in 1940, nightly Nazi bombings became so common that his family slept in an air raid shelter for six weeks. Sometimes, the bombings occurred during the daytime, too.
"I remember my mother, with me in her arms, running with many others in the streets amid the din of explosions, to the tunneled public shelter in Beaumont Street Park," Ralph wrote in his memoirs . "After the raid, it was strange to see houses sliced open and their insides exposed, the profiles of the different floors, the furniture, scattered clothing and belongings, piles of rubble."
Ralph's mother agonized about whether to flee to America, where she and Ralph could get in because of a family connection. Doing so meant they would have to leave behind Ralph's father, because he was being called into the Royal British Army.
They did, though, and settled in Miami. They weren't reunited with Ralph's father for 10 years.
"It was a terrifying experience to have to flee," Ralph's son, Johnny, said. "He carried with him a deep, deep rage at the Nazis. I think any injustice would remind him of what he, a Jewish person, had to experience fleeing while bombs were falling. My dad could lose his temper, a frightening rage, and it always had the flavor of being bombed by the Nazis."
After graduating from Harvard law school, Ralph went to work underneath one of the most impactful lawyers in American history, Thurgood Marshall, at the NAACP Legal Defense Fund. Marshall had just successfully argued the Brown v. Board of Education decision, which ruled segregation in public schools unconstitutional.
In 1964, Ralph spent two weeks in St. Augustine, Fla., working on cases to uphold the 1964 Civil Rights Act. He worked with Martin Luther King Jr., who had been arrested in St. Augustine months earlier, on a case.
Ralph continued his civil rights work with the American Civil Liberties Union. He worked extensively on behalf of protesters' rights and on ending racially discriminatory practices.
"My dad was deeply patriotic to the United States," Johnny said. "To him, the United States had saved his life and saved his family and saved other Jewish people. He bought into this notion of freedom and justice for all. He bought it hook, line and sinker. That was part of the reason he was so outraged by the treatment of African Americans. He did a lot of work with racial justice, because injustices against Black people reminded my dad of the Nazis."
In 1980, Ralph met Ann Macrory, who already had four children, including Jasper's mother, Lucinda. They met through their civil rights work, where Ann also had a deep background.
Marching in Selma and beyond
Ann, Jasper's grandmother, was attending law school at Georgetown in Washington, D.C., during the heart of the Civil Rights Movement in the 1960s, and soon became deeply involved.
On Aug. 28, 1963, she stood in the National Mall watching Martin Luther King Jr., give his famed 'I Have a Dream' speech during the March on Washington.
Less than a year after graduating with a law degree in 1964, she watched on TV as Alabama State Troopers brutally beat protesters, led by John Lewis and Hosea Williams, on the Edmund Pettus Bridge in Selma, Ala. That event became known as Bloody Sunday.
Compelled to act, Ann, age 25, drove to Selma. There, she joined protesters in their five-day march to Montgomery and the steps of the state capitol in support of voting rights. Ann recalled walking alongside a Black woman, helping hold her baby, as they marched through Dallas and Lowdnes Counties. At times, racist locals yelled at them.
Ann also fought for civil rights in the courtroom. She helped launch the Washington Lawyers Committee for Civil Rights Under Law and served as co-director for 20 years, fighting for immigrant rights, housing equality and judicial selection committees.
"My mom was my hero growing up," Lucinda said. "I was so proud of the work she did. She stuck up for people who didn't have as much as we did. . . for all the disadvantaged. That was inspiring."
Protesting apartheid
Lucinda, Jasper's mother, was immersed in civil rights from the beginning.
Although the family grew up in a wealthier Washington, D.C., neighborhood, Lucinda's mother, Ann, and father, Patrick, sent her and three siblings across town to attend a nearly all-Black school for kindergarten.
"My parents wanted us to get the experience of being the ones who were different," Lucinda said.
Every Christmas, their family would invite a financially struggling family over to join them. Whenever they went on vacation, they'd bring an inner-city family, who had never left the boundaries of D.C., along with them.
There was protesting, too.
Ann once took Lucinda to the South African embassy to protest apartheid.
Soon after, Lucinda lobbied her high school's administrators to divest from any companies that dealt with the South African government during apartheid. School administrators agreed.
Jasper's childhood
Jasper was born in January 1998 in Oregon, where his parents, Lucinda and Dicken, had settled. By that time, Ralph and Ann were married and living in Oregon, too.
So, Jasper grew up surrounded by civil rights fighters, who heavily influenced his life. Lucinda and Dicken raised Jasper to educate himself, read the news, be aware of issues and to build bridges with others.
Jasper was always engaged. At just 5 years old, he would challenge Ralph in debates. Ralph, the powerful and dynamic ACLU litigator who took on the Jim Crow South, would not let Jasper off the hook. In his thunderous, bellowing voice, he would argue back.
"You would think a kid would shrink and be terrified," Lucinda said. "But he wouldn't."
They would go back and forth. After a while, Lucinda would hear a pause as Jasper thought.
"Then," Lucinda said, "you'd hear Jasper say, 'Good point, grandpa.'
"It was the cutest thing."
Ralph's civil rights work continued in Oregon.
"He would go after any signs of injustice or racism," Jasper said. "If he read something in the paper, he'd go out and protect minority families, homeless people, anyone he thought the law was failing. I was really young and didn't really grasp what he was doing all the time, but it's one of those things you look back and wow, he was a powerful man who was doing the right thing."
The family made several trips to Costa Rica as Jasper was growing up. They did not stay at the common tourist destinations on the Pacific Ocean side. They stayed in a shack without electricity on the Caribbean Sea side, near a reservation where the indigenous Bribri people lived.
Jasper always fit in with the local children.
"He would run around and want to hang out with them all day long," Lucinda said. "It was an experience for him being in the non-majority. He was the only White kid. He fit right in. He would be hugging them and swimming with them and playing with them."
One of the children in the pack of friends was Kevin, whose mother was Bribri. Kevin grew up on Telamanca reservation in Costa Rica before moving to Cocles.
Jasper gets a brother
Kevin was staying with his aunt, a friend of Ann's, at the time. Through that connection, Lucinda and Dicken learned that Kevin had been bouncing around between homes in Costa Rica and was looking for a permanent home.
They went through a lengthy process that took over a year to adopt Kevin.
"I was super excited," Kevin said about the idea of moving to the United States with the Weatherby family. "I feel like most of what I saw (about America) was on television. I was thinking about big cities. So, I was surprised when I went straight to a farm. I envisioned more of a city. But I grew up in Costa Rica in jungles and beaches, so a farm isn't too distantly far from that. It was a really beautiful area."
Kevin only spoke Spanish at the time. He had four months to learn English in order to start third grade.
There was a big adjustment to American life, too.
"There were a lot of social aspects I wasn't used to," Kevin said. "I wasn't used to being tucked in (before bed). That's not really how Latin culture is. I remember thinking hot tubs and saunas were so weird. 'You guys do this for fun?' Come winter, I figured it out. I had never seen snow before. It was a big adjustment."
Kevin, who is two years older than Jasper, is extremely outgoing, very curious, can hold a conversation with anyone -- something that has served him well while working jobs as a barista and bartender. He's currently pursuing a degree, potentially in a medical field like physical therapy.
Kevin's talents span many different areas. He speaks English, Spanish and French. He plays guitar and writes his own songs. He can play piano. He has acted in plays. He's an outstanding dancer. He's into poetry. He paints and draws. He lifts weights and excelled in sports growing up, especially soccer.
"I always joke that I stuck with hockey because he was better than me at everything else," Jasper said.
George Floyd sparks a movement
In addition to growing up with a diverse group of friends, Jasper also was exposed to activism as a child.
He joined family members at environmental and prison reform protests growing up. As he got older, he became more and more aware of the role his grandparents played in the Civil Rights Movement.
"I remember thinking that was so long ago," Weatherby said. "Then, I started thinking about how it's not that long ago. Then, it was like, 'Oh my God, this stuff is still happening.'"
Weatherby was driving from Oregon back to Grand Forks in early June as the country erupted in protest over the death of George Floyd in Minneapolis police custody. When he arrived in Grand Forks, only a few teammates were in town, including his roommates, Jacob Bernard-Docker and Mark Senden.
They discussed the Black Lives Matter movement together. They watched Ava DuVernay's documentary, 13th, which explores the history of racial inequality in the American prison system.
When a Black Lives Matter march was organized in Grand Forks, Weatherby, Bernard-Docker and senior Peter Thome attended it together.
UND players have been discussing ideas on how to keep the movement going during the upcoming hockey season, one in which the Fighting Hawks will likely start as the No. 1-ranked team in the nation.
"We've had some healthy conversations," said Weatherby, the 6-foot-3, 212-pound center who had 10 goals and 18 points last season. "What more can we do? It's time for a change to happen. We're in a great spot with our platform.
"I think people thought that the impact of slavery and segregation ended when the Civil Rights Act was passed, but I think that's so not true. What you're seeing with mass incarceration, people being moved into projects, going to bad schools and being set up for failure is very real and it's still happening. I think with hockey, I'm in an interesting place where maybe I can use this platform to address a group of people who might not be as exposed to it."
For the time being, he continues to offer his thoughts on social media. Weatherby's Twitter bio reads, "Black Lives Matter." His Instagram page has just one collection, labeled "BLM."
A message on Instagram
Johnny Temple, Ralph's son, lives in Brooklyn, N.Y., and is the founder of Akashic Books, a publishing company. Among the company's specialties is publishing books from African-American authors and other Black authors from the African diaspora.
One of those books is "We Matter: Athletes and Activism," which was written by former NBA player Etan Thomas. Johnny interviewed Thomas, one of the first athletes to speak out against the War in Iraq, about his book. Johnny said he's struck by athletes who are willing to put their careers on the line to speak out.
"I've been impressed by how compelled (Jasper) is to speak about injustices when he sees them," Johnny Temple said. "That's something my father had. Jasper seems to not just be someone who wants to do the right thing, but feels emotionally compelled to speak up when he sees something that isn't right."
It was late one morning this summer when a personal message landed in Weatherby's Instagram inbox.
It was from a UND student, who had noticed Weatherby's activity on social media.
"I don't know if you'll ever get this and I don't know why I'm sending this," the message started, "but I had an urge to say thank you. As a black student that attended UND, I've never felt comfortable on this campus so seeing you use your voice for the movement honestly makes a difference."
It was validation for what Weatherby has been doing.
Ralph and Ann have both passed away. Ralph died in 2011. Ann died in January.
But their legacies, carried from London to Washington, from St. Augustine to Selma, from Ashland to Vermont, are living on through Jasper in another moment of racial reckoning.
