Dick Powell | To The Ends Of The Earth (1948) | Film Noir | Full Movie
To the Ends of the Earth is a 1948 US film noir thriller movie that was directed by Robert Stevenson and starred Dick Powell, Signe Hasso, and Ludwig Donath.  The story is about a United States Narcotics Agent Michael Barrows (played by Dick Powell) is assigned to find an unidentified freighter suspected of smuggling drugs. When he and the Coast Guard spot the drug ship, along the California coast, they give chase. Barrows watches helplessly through binoculars as the drug freighter captain has about a hundred chained slave laborers thrown overboard to drown. The ship escapes by passing beyond the 12-mile limit and entering international waters. Horrified by what he has seen, Barrows determines to smash the narcotics ring even if it means  traveling "to the ends of the Earth" if need be.  TV Guide's review of the film. "An engrossing, globetrotting semi-documentary on the evils of narcotics pushers, specifically those who try smuggling opium onto U.S. shores...The chief factor in the film's success as an adventure picture is the realistic documentary approach." Julie Andrews in Torn Curtain (Alfred Hitchcock, 1966) Cast: Paul Newman, Julie Andrews, Lila Kedrova, Hansjörg Felmy. Tamara Toumanova, Ludwig Donath, Wolfgang Kieling, David Opatoshu, Gisela Fisher, Mort Mills, Carolyn Conwell. Screenplay: Brian Moore. Cinematography: John F. Warren. Production design: Hein Heckroth. Torn Curtain has one great scene that recalls the classic Alfred Hitchcock films: It's when Michael Armstrong (Paul Newman) and the farmer's wife (Carolyn Conwell) take an extraordinary time (for a movie at least) to kill Herrmann Gromek (Wolfgang Kieling). It's an exceptionally well-directed scene, harrowing in its unexpected realism in the midst of a film that's anything but realistic. I particularly like the way the struggle leaves Armstrong exhausted when it's over, a refreshing change from the usual movie action in which the protagonist picks himself up and dusts himself off after a fight as if it was no big deal. But there's nothing real about the way Michael and Sarah (Julie Andrews)  supposedly blend in with the crowds in East Germany. I  lived in Germany for almost a year and know how easy it is to spot American haircuts and clothes like the kind Newman and Andrews have in the movie, so their going unnoticed on a bus full of Germans is silly movie fakery. But almost everything about Torn Curtain feels fake. Andrews and Newman are miscast, apparently having been foisted on Hitchcock by the studio, Universal. Granted, Andrews's role is a particularly thankless one, the stand-by-your-man helpmeet, but it's particularly unfortunate in the context of a film by a director who had traditionally given women strong leading roles. And despite an opening scene that puts the two of them in bed, there is no sexual chemistry between Andrews and Newman. (Was there ever sexual chemistry between Andrews and a leading man? Is that a consequence of having been introduced to movie audiences as a nanny and a novice in a convent?) The one interesting performance in the movie is Lila Kedrova's Polish countess, trying to get Michael and Sarah to sponsor her immigration to the United States, but it goes on much too long, as if Hitchcock knew what a drag the rest of the film was and wanted to showcase this florid eccentric. This was the first film Hitchcock made without the team of cinematographer Robert Burks, composer Bernard Herrmann, and film editor George Tomasini, who had seen him through most of the glories of his 1950s and early '60s classics.

100. Geburtstag am Tag der Einheit
Tumblr media
4.04 He’s Alive
Director: Stuart Rosenberg
Director of Photography: George T. Clemens
“That's what we said, too. They were brown scum. Temporary insanity, part of the passing scene, too monstrous to be real. So, we ignored them or laughed at them. Because we couldn't believe that there were enough insane people to walk alongside of them. And then one morning, the country woke up from an uneasy sleep, and there was no more laughter. The Peter Vollmers had taken over. The wild animals had changed places with us in the cage. But not again. It mustn't happen again. We can't let it. We simply can't let it happen again. All, all that nightmare. Oh, no. No, not this time.“

WATCHED
I've seen it at least half a dozen time in my life, bits and pieces during Twilight Zone marathons. But I had never seen it fully start to finish and I haven't seen this story for at least 10 years or more. So I went to watch it in context with current events of the last four years.
Eerily prophetic. I don't think it's ever over as Rod Serling says in the narration:
"Where there's hate, where there's prejudice, where there's bigotry. He's alive. He's alive so long as these evils exist. Remember that when he comes to your town. Remember it when you hear his voice speaking out through others. Remember it when you hear a name called, a minority attacked, any blind, unreasoning assault on a people or any human being. He's alive because, through these things, we keep him alive."
Cautionary tales never end. There's always going to be that danger in the future.
