22. Weirdest hobby the other endures?

Mario's a furry. He got into it in Middle School, made himself a Fursona, commissioned art of it, the whole thing. He does not have a fursuit, however, because he can't afford one. Yet.

Luigi, around the same time Mario first joined the Furry community online, got into anime. Unlike Mario, however, ended up growing out of his weeb phase and leaving it (mostly) behind him.

Being a Furry isn't exactly a weird hobby, but Luigi really relates it more to their Cringe Middle School ages, so to him it's weird. He's never outright mean about it, just takes the shots he's handed.

23. Food one hates and their partner loves?

Luigi can eat anything. Probably actually literally. Hand him something and tell him to eat it, he'll do it without even looking at it. Uncle Tony's gotten him to eat all sorts of random objects including and not limited to; A small piece of the drywall, a napkin with some pasta sauce on it, two nickles, several rocks, a nut off his dad's car, and 3 white chess pieces (two pawns and a knight)

Mario's a little picker. We know he's not a big fan of mushrooms, it's mostly the texture, he's also kinda weird about eggs, avocado in any form, mashed potatoes, and most leafy greens.

He's also not as big a sweet tooth as Luigi. Not that he doesn't like desserts, just not as much as his brother. On the flip Luigi's not a "could eat delivery pizza for every meal for three months" kind of guy like Mario.

I am always delighted to share the good news of John Webster! If you're not familiar with him, he was an early seventeenth-century English playwright known for being a slow, painstaking, but reliable writer. He did various collaborations with other playwrights (and acknowledges a bunch of his peers in an author's note to The White Devil, including Jonson and Shakespeare) and wrote some middling plays in various genres that could be more or less termed "original fiction," but he's remembered for two brilliant, bloody tragedies.

The basic premises/plots of both of these were essentially ripped from the headlines of the previous century, and Webster makes zero attempt to conceal that fact.

The White Devil is based on the actual murder of Vittoria Accoramboni in the late sixteenth century and the characters in the play are generally given the same or similar names as the real life people in the story as known at the time, so there's no attempt to conceal the play's origins (the anti-heroine/villain???[debatable] is named Vittoria Corombona in the play, for instance).

The original production of The White Devil largely failed, which Webster blamed mainly on bad weather and an audience who just didn't get his ~vision and what he was trying to do. It would not be unsurprising for a contemporary audience to struggle with it given that it's a complicated play in which, among other things, Vittoria is put on trial and rhetorically shreds the underlying misogyny of the entire legal process.

The Duchess of Malfi, generally considered a still greater achievement, is based directly on the murder of Giovanna d'Aragona, Duchess of Amalfi by her brothers (it was presumed, likely correctly). Lope de Vega also wrote a play about this tragedy not long before Webster did, though the plays are very different and it's unlikely that Webster would have had the time or linguistic knowledge necessary to read Lope's version. Probably part of the reason for the differences between Lope's and Webster's takes is that Lope had to be careful about the reception by the Catholic Church given that one of the murderers was a cardinal, while obviously an English Protestant like Webster could say whatever he wanted about eeeeevil cardinals.

Webster takes a lot of artistic license, a normal approach at the time to adapting previously-established narratives, but the source material is very recognizable. One of the commendatory verses at the beginning of the play (blurbs in poetic form from other playwrights) is like "I'm sure the real duchess was cool but she couldn't be as cool as Webster's heroine, wow <3". (One of the other commendations is by another fave of mine, John Ford.)

Bosola, the historically mysterious minion of the Duchess's murderous brothers (=Bozolo in the historical narrative) gets an elaborate quasi-redemption arc in the play. And the play is extremely critical of various characters' obsession with and attempts to control the Duchess's sexual behavior (a fixation that is often extremely normalized in early modern British drama, but which comes off really badly here).

Ultimately this obsessiveness leads to her brothers, the Cardinal (=the historical Cardinal Luigi d'Aragona) and Ferdinand (=Carlo d'Aragona) orchestrating her torment and murder in which she emerges with her sanity and integrity intact and dies with dignity. Meanwhile, the Cardinal is exposed as a remorseless villain (he proceeds to murder his mistress with a Bible) and Ferdinand's already-shaky sanity snaps under the realization of what he's done.

Webster's Duchess is often considered the first real female tragic hero in British drama—the tragic is especially significant because tragedy was typically considered a higher art form than comedy and the truly great female characters from that era of drama are often restricted to comedies or secondary roles in tragedy (a marked trend in Shakespeare, for instance). The Duchess in the play is virtuous, strong-willed, witty, and fairly unabashedly sexual in the context of the time, a concept that several hundred years of critics have struggled with. (My favorite OTT complaint is from Martin Sampson, an early 20th century critic who lamented the conspicuous absence of a "strong active man, following righteous things" in Webster's work, to which I say l m a o.)

Anyway, among scholars of early modern British drama, Webster is often considered second only to Shakespeare as a tragedian, on the basis of those two plays. And the modern obsession w/ originality and novelty makes this kind of fascinating, given that his "original" work (in our sense—again, the original vs fanfic dichotomy was not a thing in that cultural context) is sort of meh but his work with pre-existing sources turns them into these staggering dramatic achievements.

Concept: Mario destresses by using the cat powerup and going cat-mode. He keeps it Very Secret because . well. hes a little (lot) embarrassed about it , but honestly? its just really nice and peaceful. take a day to run off and lay in some sunbeams. chase some butterflies. no worries only catbrain.

The mareach part comes in when peach gets worried that mario seems to have vanished, and luigi doesnt have an answer as to where (just a shrug and "i dont lnow what he's doing, but he always seems a lot more calm when he comes back, so i let it go") so she tries to find him, and does! And immediately melts because she found him catnapping and its very cute and sweet.

idk . i just think mario deserves some rest you know . sometimes you gotta do what you gotta do. also i think the cat powerup would be awesome for stress relief . imagine actually being able to knead and skitter around and lay in a sunbeam like a kitty....

Um, hello, this is INCREDIBLE

It's so easy, too! Mario has a hard time relaxing, because he's always burdened with the feeling of needing to do something, if he's not doing something or if he's not taking on tasks then he's wasting his breath. The Super Bell bestows users with the subconscious of an actual cat while not taking away their cognition; the instincts are strong enough that he can give himself to them without even thinking about it, but he's still fully aware and able to actively enjoy himself. It's a little blip of freedom.

And then Peach... one day she finds him napping in a sunny field all sprawled out like this:

and it's fucking ADORABLE. Maybe she sits with him until he wakes up, or maybe she accidentally startles him, but he sees her there with the biggest smile on her face and realizes he's been figured out. And he just starts. Begging her to forget about this and not tell anyone, and he wants to go crawl under a rock and die because how else are you supposed to react to your crush finding out that you’re so bad at relaxing that it takes becoming temporarily part-cat just to get some respite?

But she promises that his secret is safe with her, and she assures him she doesn't find it odd in the slightest; actually, she finds it quite cute, and she's glad that he has some sort of outlet, because stars know he's bad about letting things pile on and insisting he can handle it, even when he can't.

And heck, maybe she joins him sometime. They spend all day destressing by chasing each other around and then curl up for a nap together. If this is pre-relationship, then consider: their cognition is still intact, yes, but Cat Brain overrides most things like shame or shyness, which leads to them sleeping in a patch of wildflowers all cuddles up together, like so:

Now, originally I had thought to keep it to more obscure games, or at least games that aren't talked about as much, like Super Mario 3d world. But I'm very stressed and exhausted at the moment, and I'm indulging with one of my favourite Mario games, so perhaps....

Overly Analyzing Luigi's Mansion 3; Mario Rescue cutscene

So, in order to rescue Mario, the player has to defeat the hotel owner, Hellen Gravely in her office. Each boss ghost has their own unique animation before being sucked into the Poltergust G-00, and hers is to demand Luigi pause long enough for her to apply her make up. Queen moment, if I'm to be honest.

Luigi also has a celebration animation after he defeats ghosts and bosses, and here he tosses his hat off in celebration. It's such a cute moment; he's been constantly terrified in this haunted hotel, but he's so proud of himself for conquering this particularly scary obstacle!

Now, the main reason I'm looking at this scene today. Luigi uses the Dark-Light feature of the Poltergust to rescue Mario from the portrait he was trapped in. Said portrait was hanging up in Hellen's office, and she used it to taunt Luigi to come fight her to save his brother, I should add.

Mario falls from the painting and is seemingly dazed and confused at first. Unlike in the first game, the portraits here are frozen, unmoving images, so it takes Mario a moment of checking out his body and arms to realize he's free.

The second he looks up at Luigi, though, he instantly lights up. I recommend you check out the scene for yourself, because the way he bounces up and stretches his arms out as he goes "OH YEAH!" is so cute and expressive. They really outdid themselves with the cutscenes in this game.

Mario runs over to Luigi, exclaiming "Way to go, Luigi!" and his joyful energy is immediately returned by Luigi. Luigi spreads his arm, happily exclaiming "Mario!" while Mario jumps into his arms and just. Look at them.

Look at them.

I can't even begin to describe how happy this makes me. Mario jumping right into Luigi's arms like it's so natural and common for them to do, Luigi's leg lifting up as he catches Mario, Luigi holding Mario up for a split second, Luigi's loud "MARIO, hey bro!" it's so tender and wholesome. This is the kinda sibling energy I wanna see with them!

There's so much display and affection and trust on display here in just a few seconds of animation. And there's just something about Luigi being the one to do the hug lifting that's just, so cute. Chefs kiss, no notes, perfect scene.

Luigi sets Mario back down on his feet, and I love that this shot allows us to see Mario's perspective. While this is overall a very joyful and upbeat scene, I think it's nice to also show Mario getting some much needed comfort after his third time being rescued from a portrait in the Luigi's Mansion series, poor guy.

Very briefly, before they step back, Luigi is also shown patting Mario's back with his hand. Again, even though Luigi has navigated this hotel scared out of his mind, the fact that he's shown to be consciously giving his brother some show of comfort is adorable.

Luigi steps back and they both laugh, Mario placing his hand on Luigi's shoulder. They're both equally happy to be reunited! Smaller note, but Luigi appears to be ever so slightly bending his knees, probably to be closer to Mario. Yes the height difference between them really isn't that noticeable, but I'll take what I can get, okay?

For a second, the scene lingers as they simply stare at each other in relief. Then Luigi seems to snap back to it, having a small "wait a minute-" moment as he looks at the camera.

Immediately, Mario's smile drops too, and his hand drops off Luigi's shoulder as he straightens up. You can tell Luigi kinda forget where they were for a moment, probably because of how relieved he was to see Mario again, and now he's remembering that oh yeah, they're kinda stuck in a haunted hotel with a giant Boo that specifically has it out for them.

Luigi grabs Mario by the shoulder and exclaims, "Come on! This way!" clearly referring to Professor E Gadd's lab.

A bit of context for those who haven't played the game; before rescuing Mario, the player rescues the three Toads who also accompanied them on the vacation trip to the hotel, and every time Luigi escorts them to the elevator so they can stay in E Gadd's lab, safe and sound from the ghosts. So we can infer Luigi's immediate thought was to also get Mario there, so he wouldn't be in danger anymore :'3

He keeps his arm on Mario's shoulder, and grabs his other hand to literally start leading him in the direction of the elevator. Which is just.... so precious. Literally "I just got you back and you are not leaving my side until I know you're safe" energy. They care so much about each other guys. I love protective big bro Mario with all my heart, but protective Luigi fretting and worrying over Mario's wellbeing is so special too.

However, unlike the Toads who were more than happy to stay in the safer lab, Mario has other plans.

While wiggling out of Luigi's gripe, Mario corrects him with "Ah ah, ah ah, this way!" and pulls him back into the office. Luigi's confused, and his hand reflexively almost reaches for the Poltergust since they're heading back in the direct of danger (or it could just be his arm swinging back from Mario's pull, but again, over analyzing.)

The camera pans over to reveal the wall with the portrait Mario was trapped in on it.

Mario turns back to Luigi, clearly gung-ho and ready to go. We don't see much of Luigi's face, but I like to think he had an "oh no, not this again-" expression, because he knows exactly what Mario is about to do.

Mario gestures over his shoulder with a "Come on!" and takes off, leaving Luigi to startle and raise his hand. Here we get their classic dynamic; Mario, head strong and determined, running recklessly right into the action, and Luigi, timid and cautious, taking a moment to really sit and think about the situation.

Mario throws himself at the sliding wall and pushes it aside, demonstrating some serious physical strength. That's a pretty thick wall, with a portrait and tv screen on it to boot, but he manages to throw it open fairly easy.

Once past that, we see Mario stumble a bit from the momentum of pushing the wall. He immediately sets himself upright, gesturing again for Luigi to "Come on!" without much of a pause. Again, so much character on display here; Mario is flinging himself right into the action, and while he isn't particularly clumsy, he's practically stumbling from how fast he's pushing himself.

You can read this as that's simply in Mario's heroic nature - to run right into danger without so much as a second thought - but you can also read it as him being ecstatic to be out of that portrait. Even though he knows at this point that King Boo is waiting for them and Princess Peach still needs saving, he's still smiling and urging Luigi to follow him, like they're on an adventure. This is much more his speed, as opposed to being the one needing a rescue.

So Mario opens the door, not bothering to actually wait for Luigi, and continues on ahead. I read it as a bit of his impulsiveness with charging ahead, and also as trust that Luigi will follow him anywhere - albeit at his own pace.

For a split second, Luigi hesitates with a confuse "Mario?". Even though he knows his brother, he probably wasn't expecting Mario to bounce back so quickly. But hey, if his brother is still willing to forge on ahead even though he just escaped a trapped portrait, Luigi can't hold himself back either, can he?

He grabs his flashlight and exclaims a energized "Okay!". Again, keep in mind that this whole game, Luigi has been terrified out of his wits and scared of every obstacle in his way. But now having his brother back has him grinning and ready to face the challenges up ahead. The way they inspire courage in each other can actually be so personal-

Even though Luigi's Mansion 3 came out first, and the two don't really have a lot of connections outside of being based on the same property, I can't help but connect the new movie's "Nothing can hurt us, as long as we're together!" theme to this scene here.

Such a good scene, great animation and personality on display. Literally my only complaint is that I want more of well thought out cutscenes in Super Mario games in general.

Oh, and more bro hugs. Definitely more bro hugs.

I'll give you two here, anon. One for Gravity Falls and one for SPM. (I tried to think of something Star Wars, but I honestly need to reread and rewatch a lot of content before being able to dig something up that I haven't ranted about before...)

Gravity Falls

While I don't think this is necessarily ignored, it certainly gets looked over in the greater commentary.

Bill and Stanford had off and on communications in the Mindscape for two years before Bill escalated their interactions to literal bodily possession.

That's...that's a lot of time. Not Palpatine-grooming-Anakin amounts of time, but still a significant portion of Stanford's existence and research in Gravity Falls, and this is before Fiddleford and the Portal and all of that jazz.

Ford had it...bad. However you want to interpret that statement. And Bill, apparently, found the perfect mark in Ford, considering he stayed with this plan for so long (although 2 years is probably an hour to a being who has existed for trillions of years).

Nonetheless, from Ford's point of view, this was the third-longest relationship we see him have, outside of his brother and Fiddleford. That's no small thing and I can't imagine the complexity of emotions (not even to mention the mirroring with his situation with Stan when they were 17) Ford experienced after learning of Bill's true intentions. It's...wild.

Super Paper Mario

Just how unbelievably fucked up this part is:

Luigi's decapitated head, animated with the power of Dimentio, is foretelling all of their dooms despite Mario and the gang seemingly defeating the Big Bad. It's a fascinating moment as it undercuts our usual expectations for the Big Boss Battle. Mario wins the battle, but loses the war. His brother is as good as dead, the world is still ending, and there is nothing he can do about it.

Mario fails.

Mario doesn't save the day.

It's in the subsequent cut scene where Bleck and Tippi resurrect the Pure Hearts one last time to save all of existence. Which is...a fascinating choice, both narratively and from a game play perspective. Something about free will, something about doing all you can and the final decision, your final fate, still being out of your hands.

It's one of the gazillion reasons I adore this game so.

Luigi being parental gives me life it’s just so cute so here’s some ideas that I think Luigi would do

I don’t know if you guys have seen that Tumblr post about how the Kooplings would make baby alligator noises but I want you to know that I have 100% adopted that head cannon cause it is too cute not to

So imagine with me Luigi and Junior are in the library because Luigi was there hanging out and Junior decided to join him since he had nothing else to do 

Everything is fine and dandy but then suddenly luigi hears a loud slam and then Junior crying out Luigi of course very quickly makes his way towards Junior asking him what’s wrong

Junior Merli points at a book that seems to be quite a hefty size and then points at a shelf that is just out of Junior‘s reach Luigi immediately puts the puzzle of the pieces together

Poor Junior was just merely trying to get a book, but it ended up falling on his head instead. Luigi will ask Junior if he could take a look while gently moving Junior‘s hand away from the top of his head where he assumes the wound is. after checking to see if it’s bleeding and realizing that it isn’t logically there’s nothing that Luigi can do to relieve the physical pain but that doesn’t stop Luigi from saying a small nursery rhyme

“pain pain go away don’t come back another day” while saying this Luigi will rub the top of Junior‘s head and then very dramatically act out a motion of throwing something away. that something being the pain after that Luigi will then blow on the wound

Once Junior stops giggling Luigi asks if he feels any better Junior simply nods in response

I imagine that Junior would then tell his siblings and his dad about what Luigi did saying that “he magicked my Ouchi away ” this ultimately leads to Bowser going to Luigi by the end of the day asking if he knows any magic

Luigi would say that no he doesn’t why do you ask once Luigi finds out that Junior was the one who told his dad that he knows healing magic he simply laughs saying that no that’s just an old nursery rhyme that my aunt used to do for me and Mario whenever we got a couple of cuts and bumps.

(bowser of course thinks that’s absolutely adorable but would probably keep that to himself)  also another thing that would happen is that juniors siblings will probably still think that Luigi can actually do magic and would go to him for small wounds like scratches or bumps and Luigi would do the same thing that he did for Junior although he now carries a small first aid kit with him wherever he goes just in case it needs a little bit more than his Italian touch

Also I imagine one day Bowser would have the same thing happen to him in where something falls on his head and The kooplings Witnessing this Would immediately drag bowser to Luigi asking Luigi to do his magic

And Luigi without hesitation because he’s done this so many times before only merely asking what happened before he continues to quietly say the nursery rhyme in the little Toon that it comes in and blows on the spot where the pain is

It’s only once Luigi was done with the whole ritual in where he realizes what he’s doing and once the realization hits he’ll very quickly take his hand away from the top of Bowser’s head looking away blushing like the tomatoes he uses when he makes him and Mario pasta

by some miracle he manages to say “feel better?“

Bowser just stares at Luigi while his brain is currently trying to process all that is happening

Now depending on whether or not Bowser and Luigi are thing(aka in a relationship) is what happens next

if they’re not a thing Bowser is probably going to be like oh my goodness that was absolutely adorable I mean not adorable what am I saying this is Mario’s brother I’m talking about he can’t be adorable I won’t allow it?!? 

Following those Train of thoughts he’ll then look away and notice that his kids are patiently waiting for an answer the younger ones have a worried look while the older ones have a Knowing smirk bowser then says that he’s doing better and as quietly as he could possibly go he’ll mumble a thank you to Luigi and if Luigi wasn’t paying attention he would’ve missed it thankfully though, he was.

Luigi will when Bury his face deeper into the book he was reading earlier (before the kids dragged bowser over) not wanting to look at bowser when he says it’s no problem.

IF THEY ARE A THING  bowser would definitely take this opportunity to flirt he would look at Junior saying you know what son I think you’re right then he’ll look back at Luigi to say it seems green bean does know some magic this would cause Luigi to bury himself in the book he’s reading waving a hand at Bowser telling him to stop your being silly I don’t know any magic

With either of these options it could lead up to the same results and that’s a couple of weeks later  Luigi would be in the kitchen cooking for the youngest kooplings junior, Larry, Morton and wendy a small snack .

 The kids were merely just roughhousing when one of them bumped into a counter  causing something to fall and hit Luigi‘s head he didn’t think nothing of it merely just running away the pain saying in Italian how “that’s gonna bruise”

He looked at the kids and noticed that they were all looking at him really worried he very quickly lifted his hands up saying that he was all right but that seem to only make things worse because in doing so a small triple of blood went down his face the kids all start to panic and start to cry/chirp? Luigi tried his best to calm the kids down but to no avail

Bowser hearing several of his kids calling for him he very quickly makes his way to where the noises are.

he passed through the doors asking “what’s wrong?!? what happened?!?” when he noticed all the kids surrounding Luigi

Junior looked at Bowser and pointed up at Luigi saying that they’re sorry and they didn’t mean to. It was only once Bowser looked at Luigi that he noticed a small triple of blood. it was nothing too serious just a bump with a tiny cut

Bowser sighs relieved that the kids were ok  bowser makes his way towards the kids picking up Junior saying I’m sure you didn’t mean to and I’m sure Greanie knows that too you’re not gonna get in trouble so don’t worry about it, all of you.

Bowser assumed that the kids were crying because they were afraid of getting in trouble but when they all shake their heads Bowser just tilted his in confusion. that was when Wendy muscled out between sobs “but he’s still hurt and that they don’t know how to heal him”

An idea sparks in Bowser‘s head and he places a hand on Luigi‘s head rubbing it gently saying the same thing that Luigi has done over and over again for him and his kids “pain pain go away don’t come back another day”  finishing it off by gently blowing where the wound is

There feel any better? Bowser would ask Luigi and Luigi in return will shyly look at the kids not wanting to look up at Bowser and say “Yep much better”

Even in a relationship Mario is pretty lay back but always sincere, he is pretty open with his feelings and affectionate but he is more of acts of service than physical affection

Mario knows how it is to be judged or constantly under the pressure of others, that is why he prefer to don't judge you and support and is always saying it to you

If you ask him if he could lend you his cap, he doesn't have troubles doing it but will ask you why out of curiosity (probably at the same time as he gives you the cap), it could also happen that you borrow it while he isn't using it, in any case he doesn't mind much if you borrow his cap

Seeing you using his cap is initialy surprising, is something that probably had never crossed his mind so he initialy doesn't know how to react and end up asking you what are you doing, but it isn't that he doesn't like it. It doesn't matter if you put the cap on when he is there with you or he find you trying it doesn't change much his reaction

After his initial surprise he finds it kinda adorable that you wanted to try his cap, he will compliment you and probably tease you a little bit (and laugh softly if you blush for it). If you try to imitated him he will laughs even more and start making some jokes about it

Mario has no problem with you using his cap whenever you want (as long as he isn't working, is part of his uniform) and he can't help but think that you look rather cute with the cap (and has no problem with saying it, sometimes with a little blush)

Luigi

Even when being in a relationship Luigi can be easily flustered, but at the time pass he win a little more confidence and doesn't get all shy all the time. As shy as he can be Luigi is actually pretty open with his love, but he is better at showing it on indirect ways (that way he doesn't get all flustered and blushy)

Luigi sincerely cheerish for you and support you in anything you want (as long as you aren't in danger or is something too scary, still he tries his best), he had learn from his brother and he want to be always there for you (just as he has always had his brother)

If you ask him if he could lend you his cap he will be really surpised, probably a little nervous for what you may have in mind, he will ask you nervously why do you want his cap but if you insist he will lend it to you (still a little nervous)

Seeing you using his cap will suprise him even more, making him a little flustered, if he had found you trying it he will probably turn around and go, not wanting to interrupt you or even embarrassed you. Luigi doesn't really say much about it unless you ask him something or you seem insecure, trying to reasure you that you look great with the cap (triping with his word)

At the end Luigi is pretty flustered but when he finally calms down he will just laugh at what happened, finding amusing and rather cute that you wanted to use his cap (he wouldn't mind if you want to use it again in the future, also he doesn't has the heart to tell you no even if you want to keep it while he is out for work)

I can’t stop thinking about Mario’s firebrand and how he must view himself because of it. He sometimes feels like his only purpose is to protect his loved ones, and this gift of magic serves that very well, but at times he just feels like a weapon because of it. His whole existence is to just be a vessel for this larger, dangerous use. He probably shares this during a moment of vulnerability, with Peach or Luigi, maybe both, and they encourage him to find other uses for it that aren't related to fighting.

So here’s some different things Mario learned to do with his firebrand over the years:

He uses it every morning to keep his coffee warm while he drinks it. On a similar note, he uses it to help Peach make tea during their weekly brunch get-togethers, putting a palm against the kettle until the water boils, and will happily warm up her teacup if she finds its getting cool.

You know I love artist!Mario, so he definitely tries his hand at wood burning art, sketching little scenes on slabs of wood using his fingertips. He gets pretty good at it after a while.

Oh, Peach and Luigi are cold? No they're not. He's a walking, talking heated blanket, and he's not afraid to get his snuggle on.

He's a great heating pad, too. If Peach has cramps, she knows just who to go to, and he'll lay down with her and set his palm against her abdomen, gently heating the area to ease the pain.

He learns how to give the absolute best massages possible because he can warm up his hands to the perfect temperature to work into muscles.

And uh, Peach finds other great uses for his warm fingers as well...

Welding!! A plumber's dream come true, he can weld anything together without needing a specialist or any equipment.

Luigi is a big fan of having Mario nearby in dark places, because with his luck, his flashlight always manages to run out of battery at the worst moments. Mario happily serves as a torch to light the way.

He's also great to bring camping, because he can start a fire anywhere, anytime. S'mores becomes a group favorite with all of them (though Mario once has the bright idea to roast a marshmallow directly with his hand, which results in a gooey, burnt mess all over his fingers)

When they're older, and his friends and family have arthritis issues, he's the go-to painkiller. He'll just hold someone's hand until their joints start feeling better. He's dramatic about it with Peach, though, and he'll make a big show about kissing her knuckles one by one to warm them up, which she secretly adores.

In general, he just learns how to use his firebrand in new ways to show he cares about people. Of course he will always use it to defend them if he needs to, without hesitation, but it's nice to have different ways he can express his love, too.

this resurfaces in my consciousness every so often and quietly bothers me like a pebble in my shoe, so let me tell you all about a small, formative memory.

I was playing smash bros melee with my two older brothers. the game came out right around my 9th birthday, so I was solidly 9 years old. I picked Luigi, and while waiting for the others to select their characters I idly scrolled through his outfit skins and landed on a pink shirt and cap with bright red overalls. "oh! he's pretty!" I said.

immediately both my brothers sprang at me with "woah! no he's not, he's a boy."

"well, then he's a pretty boy," I said, and they pushed back harder. "boys aren't pretty. don't ever call a boy pretty," they scolded. "the correct word is handsome." and I remember thinking something like, um, I'm looking at a boy right NOW and he IS pretty, so yeah they CAN be, stupid, but I was 9 and impatient and wanted to play viddy game, so I said "okay" and dropped it.

but he was pretty. Luigi was plenty handsome in green and the other palettes, but "handsome" wasn't the right word to me when his outfit made me think of strawberry milk and shortcake. why couldn't he be both? why was "pretty" a bad word only when applied to boys? why couldn't a boy be any descriptive word under the sun? why were we gendering adjectives?

I remember feeling weirdly ashamed in that moment, not because I'd done anything wrong but because the responses of those around me told me that I'd brushed up against some unseen social rule that was not to be touched. I knew, on some level, that the shame didn't come from me, but I couldn't make sense of why it was there at all.

it was such a small, fleeting moment, one that my brothers have probably long since forgotten about, but it's telling that I remember it, and specifically the feeling of wrongness about it that I couldn't articulate but felt in my bones.

at 9 years old I understood gender neutrality, a concept that seemed so simple and straightforward to me it baffled me that my brothers didn't get it. at 9 years old I learned, not that boys can't be pretty, but that grown-ups make up nonsensical rules about words, and about beauty, and about gender, and they get really sensitive about it if you challenge them. at 9 years old I understood boys could be pretty, and not long after I took it a logical step further and realized girls could be handsome, and my little world expanded.

as I grew up I observed men and boys in my life getting hung up over such small things. my brother lost his black umbrella and refused to borrow my pink one. my dad scorned high school boys he observed with painted nails, even though it was the in thing at the time with the influx of emo and scene culture. my partner in college bristled when I told him his eyelashes were the prettiest I'd ever seen. I observed that "man = pretty?" was used as a punchline in shows and movies and laughed about in real life. and I remembered Luigi and his strawberry outfit, and I thought, what a dull and restricted world you have all chosen to live in.

not everyone needs to like to be called pretty, and that's okay. it's important to respect how individuals want to be addressed. but time and again I've observed that the men who bristle most against it seem to live in a rigid world of insecurity and shame. and that stuff isn't inherent. it's learned and taught and reinforced.

Luigi would love to be called pretty. he would love to be called cute and adorable. if you are any shape of man or boy and want to be those things, Luigi supports you. it's all a bunch of silly grown-up rules anyway, so why not have fun and embrace joy?🍓

That was kind of ironic coming from your co-worker giving the fact that you were a photographer for FC Barcelona and that was your job: taking pictures of the players. "Actually that's what I'm going to do" you said, snapping some in the mean time of a certain player that always caught your eye: Pedro Gonzales. He looked adorable with that red tint on his cheeks after the game, and his smile when his teammates congratulated him for the 100th game in Barça's t-shirt and the winning goal he scored.

After the game ended and Pedri received his t-shirt, your co-worker, Luigi, was asked to take some pictures in the changing rooms because some of the players were looking indecent. You rolled you eyes, but waited until almost everyone was out so you could sneak in. You hoped Pedri wasn't indecent, but that wouldn't have been a problem. "Y/N? What are you doing here?" He asked confused. "Came to take some pictures with the man of the match" you said. "But Luigi—". "Shush. Pose for me" you said. "Alright" Pedri chuckled. "Perfecto" you whispered. "tú eres perfecto, no yo (you are perfect, not me)" he said. "I mean it, Y/N. You're so good in everything you do and you're so talented" he said when you opened your mouth to object. "Thanks Pedri. I should go, but congrats for the goal" you said. "Gracias". "Can I give you a hug?" You asked. "Sure, but you don't have to ask" he laughed. And just like that, you gave your crush a tight hug that lasted for about 5 seconds, but it will last forever in your memory.

"Nice pictures" You slightly jumped at the sound of that voice, a voice that caused butterflies to erupt in your stomach. "Gracias Pedri" you smiled. "Hopefully they'll post them" he said. You didn't realise how close he was until now: he slightly bent his head over your shoulder to take a better look at your laptop, his breath fanning over your neck. "That's PR. I'm just a simple photographer" you sighed. "The best photographer" he corrected. "¿Que esta pasando ahí? (What's happening here?" Pablo asked. "Pedro tratando de conseguir su amor para ser su novia (Pedro trying to get his crush to be his girlfriend)" Ansu answered. You looked a bit confused when Pedri told them to fuck off. "Sorry about that" he chuckled nervously. "It's okay... I need to finish editing these photos anyway" you said, closing your laptop and hurrying down the hall to your office. "Y/N... wait" he yelled, catching up with you. "Do you want to... maybe... watch a movie? Together?" He asked. "Are you asking me out, Pedro Gonzales?" You asked blushing. "It's just my cinema room. I don't really like cinemas" he said. "Then yes. Just text me your address" you said.

"No puedo esperar a verte (I can't wait to see you)" he mumbled. "Sorry?". "Third room on the left" he cleared his throat. "I'll bring snacks for us" he said. "Can I help you?". "No, it's fine. Feel like home" he smiled.

That was kinda ironic given the fact that his house was 10 times your apartment, but you didn't care about that now. You were too close to Pedri to even think about something straight. You sometimes looked at him, he was so fucking handsome, his brown eyes and his plump lips. "Hey... you okay?" He asked, his thumb brushing your cheek. "You drifted off" he clarified when you looked at him confused. "I think I'm tired. I should go" you said. "It's late. Why don't you stay here? I have a lot of spare bedrooms. And I can drive you to work in the morning" he suggested. "I don't know...". "Please?" He gave you the puppy eyes. "Okay... but tomorrow we have to stop at mine to get my camera" you said. "Of course" he said.

"You spent the night at Pedro's???" Luigi yelled shocked. "Shhhh!!! Yeah I did. We were having a movie night and it got too late to go home. So I stayed" you explained. "Did you two you know" he wiggled his eyebrows. "No, Luigi, we didn't. I stayed in one of his guest rooms and we met in the morning. Then he bought me a coffee on the way here" you said. "Awww". "And he asked the barista to draw some hearts on my cup" you blushed. "Oh my god! He likes you too!" He said. "Too? Who said I like him?" You asked. "It's clear you do. And you're gonna convinced yourself at the gala next month" he said.

"cloae su boca. Usted podría babear (close your mouth, you might drool)" Gavi said just in time because you were making your way to the two boys in your red dress. "Hey guys! Ready for the big night?" You asked. "Claro" Gavi flexed his biceps. "And you, Pedri?". "I'm...good... yeah bueno" he shuttered. "Well, I'll see you around" you said. "dile que se ve hermosa (tell her she's beautiful)" Gavi whispered to his friend. "Y/n, you look beautiful" Pedri said. "Thanks. You look good too. Both of you" you said blushing. "ella se sonrojó (she blushed)" Gavi said. "estás viendo estrellas (you're seeing starts, Pablo)" Pedri argued with him. "Shush you two" Ferran said as the ceremony was about to start.

"And the prize for the best photo of the season... first let's see it"

"And the best photographer, all go to Y/N Y/l/n". Everyone started applauding as Luigi helped you on the stage. You claimed your award and luckily didn't have to say anything because you surely couldn't do it.

After the gala ended, it was a little after party, so you all went there. "May I have a dance with the winner?" Pedri asked, snapping you out of your daydreaming. "Sure. There you go" Luigi shoved you into him. "Congrats. I told you you're the best photographer" he smiled down at you. "I wouldn't have won it if it weren't for the person I photographed in the first place" you said. "Now, don't tell me you won because of me" he laughed. "No, but your charm helped" you shrugged. "You think I'm charming?" He smirked. "Umm... yeah" you blushed looking down at your shoes. "Y/n... I really like you" he whispered. "More than a friend" he added quickly. "Pedro—". "No, it's okay, it's your perfect night and I ruined it" he panicked. "Pedro, just listen to me" you chuckled, cupping his face into your hands. "I really like you too...and you could make this the best night of my life if you would just kiss me". He blinked twice before he registered what you just said. So, with your permission, he pressed his lips softly to yours, wrapping his arms around you in the meantime. "Te quiero, Y/n" he whispered.

"Finally!"

"Took you long enough" His teammates patted his back. "Now I won't have to listen to him saying how beautiful you look every day" Pablo whispered to you. "We were dancing here" Pedri said. "Mhm. More like making out" Pablo said. You blushed, hiding your face into Pedri's chest as he swung your bodies to the music.
