When it came to Emmy, I was playing with fire, but I would happily walk into the flames for her.

In my romance book era it seems
So here's some Emmy and Luke from Lyla Sage's Done and Dusted
And then below a doodle of Luke based off something Lyla Sage and B.K. Borison said during the Swift and Saddled book tour

Done and Dusted by Lyla Sage
4/5 stars ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Yay! My first smut of the year!
I’m going to start with things I liked:
The writing was fast paced and easy to read. The book switches between the couples POV and it was fun to get to know both of the characters.
The cover is BEAUTIFUL. What a vibe.
I like a book that doesn’t give the protagonist a terrible home life. I loved that Emmy had a good relationship with her family.
Side characters weren’t that bad (I’ll talk about this later), most of them were likable and I wanted to know more about them.
It was spicy, but not too spicy. Something about cowboy spice just hits different 🌶️🤠
It touches mental health, but not in a cringy way (I was worried it would) and gave us a decent understanding of what it was like for Emmy to go through her trauma and ADHD.
Also, this was Sage’s debut novel?! Not too shabby. Can’t wait for the next one.
Now for what I did not like:
I felt like some characters were not developed at all (I feel like this is because they will be the focus of the next book?).
Gus was not likable.
There were no twists (not that I expect that from smut). I just wanted to feel a little bit like Emmy and Brooks weren’t going to work out… just once!
My BIGGEST issue… we’re just going to ignore that she dumped her boyfriend with a post it note??
Things felt unresolved with the Brooks family.
Overall, I liked it. It was quick and easy to read. Some decent smut. And a fabulous way to start a writing career. Can’t wait for the next one 🤠❤️🌶️

Yee haw 🤠🐴🤎 Instagram
Thanks to my newfound love for Red Dead Redemption II, I have been diving into cowboy romances, and they have been an utter delight.
Done and Dusted was such a cute, wholesome read that helped bring me out of my month-long book slump. While I wish, there was more detail and character development woven into the narrative, I still had a great time with the story and loved Clementine and Luke’s sweet relationship. I can’t wait to read the second installment in this series! ✨

BOOK REVIEW: DONE AND DUSTED BY LYLA SAGE
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
TROPES
Brother’s Best Friend
He Falls First
No Third Act Break Up
Dual POV
I genuinely believe I’ve been reading the wrong type of western/cowboy romance novels. As someone who grew up tangentially to that lifestyle, part of why I haven’t liked previous cowboy romances are the caricatures of the people in that life, and the focus on the material aspects of it. This blew that notion out of the water, and it’s likely because the author herself is rooted in that life.
I love Emmy. Her fear is rational, especially as someone who has had similar experiences. And I totally get why, combined with her ADHD, she is then at a huge life crossroads. It’s really hard to come to terms with the notion that something you thought you’d be doing your whole life may not be an option for you anymore, and also to question how much you still enjoy it. While she questions her feelings at times, when she finally leans into them, it’s a nice payoff.
Luke has great growth over the course of the story. We learn through Emmy’s eyes how he originally was, how Luke perceives he was, and how different life events changed him now that he’s in his 30s. The two realizing that they never actually knew the other despite mostly growing up together is a wonderful journey to follow them on, especially because they feel like kindred spirits in a way. You can’t help but root for them, even if it seems like things will implode because of the secrets they’re keeping.
I also won’t quite look at whiskey the same for a bit. IYKYK
