Do you have any more recs in a similar vein as the Human Omega series? I never would have read it without your recommendation but I did and I loved it!
The one that immediately leaps to mind for having Large Aliens, Very Different Alien Culture, and a delightful language barrier, is Lyn Gala's Claimings, Tails, and Other Alien Artifacts.
If anyone else has recs that hit some of those buttons, I would also be glad to have them!

Ugh I'm reaching out to tumblr because I reaaaally want to read a human x alien romance where the alien is actually an alien. If I can see a hot naked guy or a silhouette of a couple kissing on the cover, I don't want it. Give me aliens who have nothing like a human form, maybe don't even have a concept of romance like humans do, massive cultural differences. Give me the SCI FI.
Help me monsterfuckers of tumblr, you're my only ho.

Ranger Gathering 2023 Day 1: Camp
Promps by @theraven-gil-lyn
How well the RA characters would’ve stayed on theme for the 2019 Met Gala ranked worst to best
Warnings: Language
Theme:
Camp- Intentionally over the top, ironically quirky ( I think a good camp focus more on the outlandish than extravagance)
Halt
Didn’t know what camp was so just showed up in a basic ass black suit
0/10 Served no Cunt
Pauline
Had someone explain Camp to her, wasn’t a fan of the concept because she’s a classic bitch. Broke theme on purpose in an elegant black gown, but is above Halt because it’s still Camp that she broke theme on purpose
3/10 Served some Cunt
Will
Really just another man in a suit but there’s mesh and ruffles…. Still not Camp tho
3/10 Served minimum Cunt, really could’ve done better
Tumblr media
Alyss
Technically it’s Camp, there’s led lights, it’s big, but there’s not really a statement, it’s extravagant but not outlandish
5/10 Served technical Cunt
Tumblr media
Jenny
Okay so imagine the dress below but made of string worms. Jenny killed it on the quirky and cute but still kinda basic
6/10 Served quirky Cunt
Tumblr media
Gilan
Showed up in satanic version of catholic religious garb (a la Papa Emeritus)
9/10 Served that religious trauma, hot priest Cunt
Tumblr media
Cassandra
Wanted to go to the Met wearing her duvet… and by god her stylists made it happen
10/10 Served the comfiest coziest Cunt
Tumblr media
Horace
Didn’t know what Camp meant, thought it meant literal camping. showed up wearing a canvas tent as with the poles in as a top coat with the flaps open to reveal a sleeping bag for a dress. Wore a bucket hat with fishing hooks and completed the look with a tackle box “clutch”
10000/10 His whole pussy was out on this one

2024 Book Recs 1-4/?
Tumblr media
1- Tress of The Emerald Sea by Brandon Sanderson
This book tells the story of Tress a young woman who’s fiance is kidnapped by a witch and goes on a daring adventure in hope of rescuing him. It has a very interesting worldbuilding, colorful side characters, and the heroine was so compelling, I won’t say to much because I do think it’s best to experience Tress and her development without knowing much about it but I can say that Tress felt a lot like she could have been a Discworld heroine. This is a Cosmere universe novel but it is not necessary to know anything about it previously to understand the book.
Recommended for: Fantasy fans, lady pirate fans, people that liked The Princess Bride, Stardust or Discworld.
2 - Unruly : The Ridiculous History of England’s Kings and Queens by David Mitchell
A history of the england monarchs told by David Mitchell (not the Cloud Atlas author, but the one we know from peep show, would I lie to you, upstart crow and many other british comedy shows), really interesting and fun and made me learn a lot of stuff I wasn't aware before, also it was cool to read a history book by an author that doesn’t even try to pretend to be impartial
Recommended for : History buffs in general, people who like David Mitchell’s type of humor, Horrible Histories fans
3 - Earth Fathers are Weird/Earth Fathers are Odd by Lyn Gala
The cutest story ever written about a guy getting accidentally impregnated by aliens.
Recommended for: people that like unconventional love stories and fluff
4 - The Art Thief : A True Story of Love, Crime and a Dangerous Obsession by Michael Finkel
This book tells the story of Stéphane Breitwieser, a successful thief who stole over 400 pieces from museums, auctions and churches in 7 different countries, not for money but for an obsession with art and who eventually lost everything because of it.
Recommended for: People interested in true crime, obsessive collecting, and narratives about human hubris

Does anyone have any recs for novels + short stories of a gay sci-fi variety? Particularly when one of the love interests is an alien. And on the more explicit side, although that isn’t a necessity.
I was playing Alpha Hole Prison recently (and other games in the same genre) and while I found them less hot and more… hilariously campy, I realized that I need to mentally rail some fictional brightly-colored guys with horns.
(Comic recs are welcome, too. Actually any type of media.)

Unnecessary throwback, I just reread The Wind that Cuts the Night AGAIN (one of my faves) and I think about this every time i do, are there any authors or books in particular that influence your writing style? Because the vibes are impeccable in this fic and it’s something that makes me wonder about any inspiration you may have had <3
Hi anon!
I have read literally thousands of books, and I think every single one of them - especially the ones I've loved - have all influenced my writing style a little. From non-fiction to fiction.
There's definitely no single writer I want to emulate, because I pretty much never find exactly what I want to read out there. It's more like I find moments, and then I think 'oh I want to make a reader feel the way this writer made me feel right now' but that doesn't necessarily mean I want to write in their style? Or if it does, it will still be influenced by all the other things that have influenced me in the past.
*thinks* I've read so many authors it's almost impossible to single out the ones I love the most re: writing style, but here's a few: Ursula K. Le Guin, dgalerab on AO3, Robin Hobb (though I feel like I've aged out of her writing now), CS Pacat, Suzanne Clarke, Bill Bryson, Robert Holdstock, Mark Z. Danielewski, Asumiko Nakamura, Andrea Gibson, Martha Wells (particularly re: Murderbot), Hinako Takanaga, Chuuya Nakahara, John Fowles, Orson Scott Card (for all that he's a bigot homophobic dickhead), Sarah Monette / Katherine Addison, Alan Ball, Mike Schur, Brian Jacques, Cecilia Dart-Thornton, Dan Harmon, Randall Jarrell, Thomas Harris, Yana Toboso, Ono Natsume, Kim Dare, Moto Hagio, Scott Heim, Gerald Durrell, Tanith Lee, George Mackay Brown, early Lyn Gala, early Sidney Bell, early Roan Parrish, Ann-Marie MacDonald, William Goldman, a bunch of classic authors and poets that we don't have time for, Tamora Pierce, Philip Pullman, and like...more fic authors I'm forgetting, lol.
(There's a mix in here, including fic writers, poets, essayists, scriptwriters and novelists).
(Also I am under no illusions that I am anywhere as good as any of these writers, they're just the ones whose styles really inspire me. Except I know I'm missing like 100 others and that's going to annoy me, lmao, I am okay with being mediocre, when I have this greatness to aspire to).
(For all the people who've ever asked me to rec some stuff, there you go, there's the list sdalkfjas).
(For anyone who thinks my writing is good, all I can say is read broadly, widely, across genres, across mediums, it's the best way to improve what you do. Though I'm mad as fuck that the list doesn't have more POC in it. I need to read far more broadly).
(Anon I'm SO glad you enjoy that fic! It was such an indulgent little story :D)

You've been a romance writer for a bit and I was wondering if I could ask a question. I've been an avid reader of romance since I was a tween, years and years ago. I've read every genre and every trope, including psychic space aliens and regency spies. I got into the LGBT romance fairly early, mostly because I've just about read everything else.
My question is, what happened? I've seen fantastic writers taken down, petty arguments between writers, publishing houses collapsing left and right. Some favorite writers are done with the scene. What is going on? I was just going to move on to something else, but my personal breaking point came when I read that J.L. Langley isn't finishing her Regency space series and we're never going to know what happened to Trouble and Rexley.
I am honestly wondering what went on behind the scenes to cause the implosion. I have three writers that I still follow from early days. You, Amy Lane and Lyn Gala.
You don't have to answer, but I thought I'd ask an insider if they could possibly shed some light on it.
DW: I don’t know any specifics about why some writers are choosing to step away. All I can say is that it’s hard work to write, and sometimes I guess people want a break. Sometimes you get burned out on a series, which is a shame for the readers, but you can’t get blood from a stone. Like I said though, I have no idea about that writer’s personal circumstances at all, so that’s just speculation on my part.
As for publishing houses collapsing... that’s a tale as old as time! It’s hard for publishers to stay competitive when self publishing is so accessible. And sometimes, like Dreamspinner, they’re lying thieves who deserve to collapse but, for some unaccountable reason, are still hanging in there. I guess it’s easier to turn a profit if you don’t bother pay your authors, artists, translators or editors! I’ve been with publishers before who closed, and who did everything right, both when they were in business and when they were closing. And I thank them for that. But Dreamspinner can go fuck itself.
As for “fantastic writers taken down”, I’m not sure who you’re referring to. The only writers I know who’ve been shunned by the community are those who were lying about their identities in order to scam readers, or those who were caught plagiarising. And good riddance to them.
I don’t think that there is any more drama in LGBT romance than any other genre, honestly. It’s just a small community, so sometimes these things feel amplified. But we’ve got nothing on YA for drama!
I think if you dig a little behind the scenes of any industry, you’ll find a lot of drama. Most readers remain totally unaware of it, but once you take a look behind the curtain, you can’t unseen it!

currents 2023.01
weekly roundup in media [1-7 january 2023]
[reading]
Lyn Gala’s Claimings series - sci-fi mlm romance - Trying to get back into reading original works this year and kickstarted my motivation with my favorite reread series.
leading the call by @dontcallmebree - MCU/au-canon div - A fun Sam-centric story featuring Steve/Bucky as the background chorus.
There Are No Words Adequate For This Day by pagination - MDZS/Harry Potter crossover - I enjoyed the outsider pov feel to this story. It was a fun read.
[listening]
the Billage of Perception, ch 2/Billie
Pansy/Taemin
Madness/Astro
[watching]
What’s Wrong With Secretary Kim? - Finally went back and finished this one. Loved it. If billionaire romance novels had male protagonists like Yeong Joon I’d read more of them.

The celeb that made Mel Buttle realise she was gay
New Post has been published on https://qnews.com.au/the-celeb-that-made-mel-buttle-realise-she-was-gay/
The celeb that made Mel Buttle realise she was gay
Tumblr media
Each month we ask Queensland entertainers to spill the tea about themselves, their craft and the local scene. This month it’s national comedy star Mel Buttle who reveals how she got into comedy, who made her realise she was gay and what her first-ever gay bar was.
Mel was born and raised in Brisbane and is a regular on Australian radio and TV. She has appeared in I’m A Celebrity… Get Me Out Of Here! Australia, The Great Australian Bake Off and recently co-hosted ABC’s Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras coverage.
Growing up in Samford, Brisbane was….
Pretty cool, if you liked playing in the creek and setting things on fire, which, surprise I did, very much. I would now kill to live out there on acreage, but as a teenager, I thought it was boring and too far away from my friends who all lived somewhere cool in the inner city. Now, I realise it’s the lesbian dream to live on a big block and grow your own veggies.
I got into comedy because…
I was a high school drama teacher, and I was always into watching the Melbourne International Comedy Festival Gala and one day I saw a flyer for a short comedy course and gave it a go. Then, I got bitten by the bug and wanted to chase the high of performing all the time. Also, sleeping in was a huge factor in my decision. I’m no good before Dr Phil’s been on.
Being a teacher taught me…
That I’m not all that interesting.
I knew I could make a career out of comedy when…
You think I can? Gosh, I’m still surprised when the phone rings.

The best gig I did was…
In regional NSW. The whole town came, the mayor gave us a tour of the beetroot farm and we had dinner at the RSL. The gig was in the school basketball court and it went off.
The worst audience I had was…
A football club luncheon, I wasn’t experienced enough and should’ve said no.
The most famous person I’ve met is…
Hmm that’s subjective, but Matt Lucas from Little Britain was up there.
My dream gig is…
Breakfast radio and some tele show where I cook food with chefs in my pyjamas.
I knew I was a lesbian when…
I had impure thoughts about Nigella Lawson.
My first gay bar was…
Sporties in The Valley for Karaoke!
My celebrity crush is…
Hayley Raso from the Matildas, she’s a babe.
youtube
Becoming a parent is…
Doing wonders for my ability to multitask, I can now make a curry, play monster trucks and book in swimming lessons.
The inspiration behind my character Lyn is…
Every mum I’ve ever met lives in Lyn.
The joke that got me into the most trouble was…
About my pubes and Julia Gillard.
What people don’t appreciate about Brisbane is…
No one gives a shit about being fancy.
The best thing about doing comedy in regional Australia is…
The pub feeds and the yarns afterwards with the locals, my gosh the best jokes I’ve ever heard that I can’t repeat here.
Mel Buttle is currently on a national comedy tour until August. Follow @melindabuttle on Instagram for details.
