Elizabeth sat at the foot of your bed as you rummaged through your closet. You were already clothed in a white sleeveless turtleneck top as you flipped through all of the plaid skirts you had collected.

“Should I go with yellow, black or blue?” you pondered over the three skirts, waiting for one to jump out at you. Elizabeth approached you with a critical eye and took the skirts from your hands. She handed you each one in turn so that you could press it against your waist and simulate the look of the whole outfit. It was so quiet as she thought that you could hear your brother’s Beatles record playing in the next room over. After you tried all three and still had no answers from your best friend you became annoyed. “Elizabeth, please. I need your help.” You knew you sounded whiney but you didn’t care. She had promised to help you get ready for this date with Beomgyu and she was slacking big time.

“Okay, in my opinion I think the yellow looks best. That way you can wear your white boots too. But honestly, Y/N. You could wear a paper bag and Beomgyu would think you look pretty.” she sighed wistfully and plopped back into your pillows. You shimmied into the yellow plaid garment and sat down next to Elizabeth on the bed, clutching the stuffed bear that Beomgyu won you on your first date. In the back of your mind, you knew she was right. Ever since your first amusement park date with Beomgyu, the two of you have been basically inseparable.

“You don’t know that. He’s sweet, but he still hasn’t…” your voice trailed into silence as Elizabeth sighed.

“Don’t lie to yourself.” Elizabeth heaved herself up to hug you from the side. “You got the best boy out of that group.” Her sweet voice soured and you knew she was referring to her failed date with Beomgyu’s older friend, Yeonjun.

“‘M sorry that Yeonjun was such a bummer.” you offered loosely.

“He wasn’t just a bummer! He bugged out on me.” she whined loudly into your shoulder.

“And he’s an idiot for it. Even Beomgyu agrees. He told me all about how he called Yeonjun and told him he was being way too much of a square to be his friend. They even didn’t talk for a few days over him bugging out on you.” Elizabeth offered a tiny smile at the knowledge. Suddenly the doorbell rang and you jumped out of your skin. Both of your parents were out of the house so you knew you had to rush down to answer the door for who you assumed was Beomgyu. Luckily, you were able to quickly slip on your shoes and grab your purse from its spot on your vanity. Elizabeth trailed behind you, planning to exit your house just after you. You bounded down exactly 12 carpeted steps to get to the living room and open the front door. The smell of freshly cut grass flooded your nose yet your primary concern was the boy standing in front of you. Every time you saw your boyfriend he made your heart flutter. Today, he was wearing a powder blue short sleeved button up and a pair of neatly pressed black slacks.

“Hey, sugar!” His voice was bright as he held out a hand to guide you out of your home. Elizabeth emerged behind you and Beomgyu’s face split into a crooked smile as he regarded her. She offered him a polite wave and patted you on the back as she said her goodbyes. Beomgyu ushered you to the car, making sure that you didn’t have to open your own door. The sleek white convertible was the envy of all your friends and your boyfriend was not afraid to show it off; especially with you sitting inside. He slid into the driver's seat easily, a sleek metal dashboard reflecting his every move. Beomgyu began to drive. You had no idea where the two of you were going but you couldn’t really find it in yourself to care. Downtown was busy this afternoon. Cars lined the streets and people filtered down the sidewalks, apparently all soaking up the sun together on this summer day. You passed the diner you worked at and noted the crowded tables, feeling grateful that you had gotten the day off. As the car came to a stop at a traffic light, you voiced that same thought to Beomgyu.

“Hm, I’m glad you got the day off, too. D’you think you can ask them for a steady schedule? I wanna make the most of our time together. If you had a schedule like that, maybe we could plan a little road trip to the beach.” He reached a hand out to lace into yours so that you could feel the cold metal of his rings against your palm. You hummed happily at the idea of a steady schedule that would allow more concrete plans with your boyfriend. The light turned green again, and Beomgyu kept only one hand on the wheel so that he wouldn’t have to let go of you. Storefronts whirled past until Beomgyu began to slow in order to pull over to the curb. He parked the car and wiggled his hand out of yours. A loud laugh escaped him as he looked you over.

“Your hair,” he took a beat to collect himself as well as he could. “The wind got it all messed up.” With anyone else, you would have shrieked in embarrassment, but you simply allowed Beomgyu to fuss over your hair for you. He was very particular, so you knew he would never let you down. Once he was satisfied, he clapped happily and made his way out of the car. No matter how badly you wanted to open your own car door you sat still; knowing Beomgyu was obsessed with the romantic gesture. The boy linked his hand in yours again and pulled you into a store you didn’t have time to examine.

It was much cooler inside, and as soon as your eyes adjusted to the darker interior you recognized the music shop. Records were carefully stacked on shelves, organized in perfect alphabetical order. Along the back wall, dozens of record players were on display for customers to examine and choose from. Although he had obviously known you were going to end up here, Beomgyu was just as awed as you were.

“Close your mouth or you’re gonna catch flies,” you poked his side in a teasing gesture. He merely faked upset by pressing his lips into a thin line and dropping your hand. Two could play at that game. “Okay, well if you’re going to be a baby I guess I’ll just...wander over there.” Your finger was pointed right at a gaggle of boys huddled together around the discount bin. Backing away slowly, you kept your gaze locked onto Beomgyu so you could see the split second his attitude changed. It didn’t take long before he was lunging toward you and wrapping his arms around your waist protectively.

“Please don’t go over there, sugar. They’ll snatch you right up,” he was surely pouting at the idea, which only made your smile grow fonder. Turning to face him properly, you squished his full cheeks between your cupped hands.

“Well it’s a good thing I have a big, strong boyfriend to scare them away.” Beomgyu keened at your praise and pushed into your hands, obviously thriving under your attention.

“Let me show you what we actually came here for.” He dragged you between the shelves of records, walking in erratic directions that would have made your head spin if he hadn’t been holding your wrist. Eventually you came face to face with a wall of electric guitars in every color you could have dreamed. You traced your fingers over some of the lined up amps and knit your eyebrows together. It was still a mystery as to why Beomgyu wanted to bring you here so badly. He had wandered away a bit, but you could hear his voice talking to someone else so you simply followed the noise. Where you arrived was simply the corner of the store with padded partitions on either side of a stool, a guitar stand and an amp. Your boyfriend stood with his back to you, conversing with a middle aged man in a uniform.

“Beomgyu, what are you doing?” Curiosity got the best of you once the employee walked away.

“I have a surprise!” His eyes were sparkling even under the harsh fluorescents of the music store. He sat down on the stool and produced a black and white electric guitar from a place you hadn’t seen before. A pair of big headphones slid over the top of his head and cushioned his ears. Slowly, you stepped closer to him. He plugged the guitar in with ease only a practiced player could have. His hands curved perfectly around the instrument as if he had placed them there thousands of times. Puzzle pieces began to click together in your brain.

“Do you play guitar?” Part of you already knew the answer already, but you had to ask. Beomgyu simply nodded but you could feel the pride radiating off of him. Your boyfriend was nothing if not confident. You watched on as his skilled fingers plucked the strings to produce a tune you didn’t quite know but enjoyed nonetheless. Beomgyu was truly in his own little world as he played guitar, head bobbing up and down with every note. There was nothing to do but look on in awe. Your heart swelled in your chest at the hidden talent of your already extraordinary boyfriend. The tune didn’t last long because Beomgyu became distracted by the wondered look on your face. He unplugged the guitar and set it aside in favor of waving you over to him. Standing between his legs, you were able to get a better look around the padded booth.

“Can I see the guitar?” Beomgyu picked up the instrument and set it into his lap so that you could easily examine it. It curved easily beneath your fingers, slightly warm from where Beomgyu had just been holding it. The strings were wound perfectly, tightened to the perfect degree in order to produce every note you could want to pluck out. More amazing than the instrument though, was the boy who propped it up.

“Why didn’t you tell me?” You weren’t offended, only truly curious as to why he decided to hide such an amazing talent from you. He hid his face behind one of his large hands.

“I dunno. It just never came up, I guess. But that’s why I wanted to bring you here. I wanted you to know two new things about me.” He peered up at you with wide eyes before finally discarding the shiny instrument and standing to his full height. The proximity between the two of you made your eyelids flutter instinctively.

“Two new things?” You inquired, trying to recall anything else out of the ordinary he had done. Beomgyu hummed in confirmation.

“Yeah, two. One, I play guitar. Two,” he waited a beat, letting the general atmosphere of the store sink in on you. “Two is that I’m in love with you.” It was only then that you noticed his hands were shaking between your bodies. You encircled them with your own and brought them up to press a reassuring kiss to the flesh before speaking.

“Hey, guess what? I love you too.”

The rainforest is on fire.

Last month it seemed every form of modern media was talking about the Amazon rainforest fires. Everyone seemed to have an opinion, including, but not limited to, environmentalists, celebrities, singers, and political leaders. Social media exploded with outrage about how climate change was causing this beautiful forest to burn to the ground. Media outlets such as CNN and Fox news reported the story, however, other news outlets, such as Forbes website claimed CNN and Fox news were reporting false information.

The Amazon rainforest is located in South America, 60% of the forest is located in Brazil followed by 13% of Peru and 10% in Columbia, as well as minor amounts in many other countries. The amazon represents over half of the planets remaining rainforests. It spans over 2 million square miles and is famed for its biodiversity, it is crisscrossed by thousands of rivers that are dotted with many river towns that portray 19th century architecture ("Amazon rainforest," 2019). This rainforest is home to 10% of known species, 40,000 different types of plant life, and 2.5 million insect species, and 3,000 different types of fruits grown. Fun fact: if you are caught in a rainstorm in the Amazon rainforest you have 10 whole minutes to find your umbrella because the trees are so tightly packed that it takes 10 minutes for the rain to reach the ground.

All of these facts about the Amazon rainforest support how important the topic of it being on fire should be to the World. However, it is important for this story to be told with only true facts. One of the topics looked at by the media outlets mentioned earlier was, what is causing these forest fires? Fox news mentions that while climate change many not have a direct tie to the cause of these fires that, “environmental activists have said there is still a connection between a warming planet and more frequent extreme-weather events (Carbone, 2019).” However, CNN meteorologist Haley Brink believes that the fires are man-made, he mentions it is extremely difficult for the rainforest to simply catch fire, even during the dry season. He explains that farmers and cattle ranchers use fire to clean land making it ready for use, that way they can grow produce. Brink states, “"It's the best time to burn because the vegetation is dry. (Farmers) wait for the dry season and they start burning and clearing the areas so that their cattle can graze. And that's what we're suspecting is going on down there” (Scutti, 2019). In Shellenberger's article, it is mentioned people are upset that famers set fire to the land to grow soy beans, which most people do not feel is an important food. Shellenberger argues that soy beans are extremely important by saying, ‘What does your kid eat? Milk, chicken, eggs? That’s all soy protein fed to poultry” (Shellenberger, 2019). Both of these reasons why the fires are spreading seem to be personal opinion of the media source. However, neither is presented with scientific data to back it up. Therefore, both are presenting their opinions to be true without supplying solid evidence to their readers.

Many celebrities got involved with the spread of this issue. Famous actor Leonardo DiCaprio for example, he shared a photo on Instagram of the fire with the caption, “The Amazon rain forest – the lungs which produce 20% of our planet’s oxygen – is on fire.” It was later proved that the picture he shared was actually over 20 years old. CNN reported that the Amazon forest is the “lungs” of the World and that the Amazon remains a net source of oxygen today. On the contrary, Shellenberger reports he spoke with one of the World’s leading Amazon forest experts, Dan Nepstad, about this statement CNN made. Nepstad replied, “there is no science behind that. The Amazon produces a lot of oxygen but it uses the same amount of oxygen through respiration, so it’s a wash” (Shellenberger, 2019). Another statement made by CNN was “If enough rain forest is lost and can’t be restored, the area will become savanna, which doesn’t store as much carbon, meaning a reduction in the planet’s ‘lung capacity’”?Again, Shellenberger reports Nepstads reply, saying, “The Amazon produces a lot of oxygen, but so do soy farms and [cattle] pastures.”CNN also had one of its leading climate reporters state, “The current fires are without precedent in the past 20,000 years.” While according to Shellenberger, while yes, the 2019 fires are up 80% from 2018, that overall, they are only 7% higher than the average amount of fires within the last 10 years.

After preforming research on this topic, I am feeling confused. I am not one to stay up to date with current news and situations, however, this topic was very upsetting to hear about. It raised so many questions for me. How can we let this happen? What happens to all the people and the animals that live in the forest? Why isn’t there more rules and precautions for the farmers burning the land? Through this assignment I learned it is important to get your news from multiple places and from places with different viewpoints. It is even more important to do your research on a topic, so that you can find out if the information being presented to you is the truth. I am also saddened by the fact that the news isn’t always trustworthy, I feel they should always tell the whole truth, even if it does not back their political agenda or belief. From now on I’ll be taking my mother’s advice to, “not believe everything you hear!”

Ahhh it’s been too long my dearest NYC.

My last trek to the city was back in 2015 with the whole O’Hara clan. I’d been itching to get back up there as we used to go quite regularly while growing up. Need a new pair of boots? NYC trip. 13th birthday? 16th birthday? New Broadway Show with phenomenal music? NYC.

THIS trip was even more exciting for another reason… Family friends of ours who used to live in California and who have since relocated to Arizona were coming to the Big Apple for the youngest’s College Graduation trip. TBH I hadn’t seen any of them in about 22 years… Yes. You read that correctly. Over 2 decades.

I was hoping to see them a few years back in Cali when the oldest “cousin” got married, but it was the same weekend as a college roommate of mine so I split to Lynchburg, VA while the family jetted across the country.

I was around 7 years old when we took the trip to California. My uncle lived out in LA for a while, but I can’t remember if we visited him first or if this was our first trip. I just remember it was a time when airlines used to serve kids meals in coach (with a stuffed plane toy like a happy meal) and Dad used to get special perks which allowed us into the cockpit of the plane to meet the pilots and DO NOT TOUCH ANY OF THE BUTTONS.

Little Brother was around a year old at the time, and there were quite a few firsts for that trip. His first haircut, we went to Universal Studios & Disney Land, Saw Gloria Estefan in concert AND handed her roses/shook her hand on stage *cue the I’m-never-washing-this-hand-again promises*, Uncle Denny tried to teach us how to water ski, and plenty more fun.

Yes, I still have the newspaper from the day after the concert, That’s August 17, 1996

I luckily had enough credit card points to purchase my direct flight from Charlotte to LaGuardia and met the family late on Thursday night for our stay at the Renaissance Times Square. After all the hello hugs, we headed up to the restaurant lobby for a quick snack, and then to get a good night’s rest before Mom & My tour guide services would be needed.

One of the best parts about staying in a hotel with Mom & Dad is that Dad reverts back into the old Softball tournament ways and finds breakfast to bring back to the room 🙂 The even BETTER part about sharing a hotel room with Mom & Dad in NYC is that the breakfast he brings back, is New York Bagels!! Breakfast in Bed, why yes I am on vacation – You’re the best Daddio!

The hotel was centrally located to just about everything – right in the heart of Times Square so Mom & I planned our loop to see the most we could before the rain was supposed to start.

First Stop? Central Park of course! A quick 13 blocks straight up 7th Ave allowed us to wander in the natural beauty of the park that almost feels like you’re in a completely different place. It looks like a giant rectangle from the sky, but when you’re in it the paths wander and roll, bringing you up to lots of memorable movie locations such as the Bethesda Fountain in the Boathouse area (27 Dresses, Elf, Maid of Honor) and Literary Walk on the Mall (Enchanted, Definitely, Maybe and about 194729 other movies).

Then up to the Met, and back down to the Plaza (Bride Wars, Eloise)… I’ll be honest, I don’t know Eloise. But our friends were very fond of her, just…. not the $500 toddler dress available in the shop downstairs.

Since we were on 5th ave, we just haaaad to stop into Tiffany & Co of course – but we were all pretty taken aback by the $22,000.00 price tag on a custom Tiffany’s Huffy Beach Cruiser bicycle. We headed up to the only floor we could afford – the Sterling Silver section, but did not leave with any blue bags in hand.

About this time it was getting close to lunch so we started to wander towards Rockefeller plaza (where the Christmas tree and ice rink is usually set) however in the summer it transforms into a lovely outdoor cafe.

NYC is almost like Disney World in the sense that there are hidden gems under the streets. In our case – our lunch spot for the day. Sadly though, there’s never enough seating so like a good New Yorker – you sit wherever you find available, even if that means the floor.

We did a little more shopping before deciding last minute to head to the Met’s Game as the rain was supposed to hold off for us! A quick stop at my usual favorite (Grand Slam in Times Square) for a replacement of NY Yankees Boxers as mine were over 15 years old and sporting holes – plus some fairly well priced sweatshirts. Then we jumped on the subway and off to Citi Field!

A Met’s win sent us back home on the Subway tuckered out with over 20k steps on the day. We all slept fairly hard that evening in preparation for Saturday’s Broadway Matinee!

It rained on us almost all day, and wasn’t seeming to let up but we kept on like New Yorkers do and walked down to Macy’s to ride the wooden escalators….

And then on to the Gershwin Theater to enjoy Wicked on Broadway – Mom & My second time seeing the show, Dad and the rest of the gang’s first. We had planned to change into proper Theater-wear, but by the time we got back and considering the next walk – we were going to be soaked anyway so we went as is.

I do love this show – the music is moving and the lighting/effects are really breathtaking. We looked at Daddio at intermission and asked him what he thought after Defying Gravity, and all he could say was “WOW”. 🙂

The rain did let up a little bit after the show and we headed back to the hotel to regroup and find dinner at one of my old favorite bars off Times Square – The Mean Fiddler. I found this spot while interning with CBS Sports the summer of 2009 and fell in love with it. The staff is all from different parts of Ireland so if their accents don’t get you – I don’t know what’s wrong with you. The food is good pub food, the beers are cold & below the main restaurant is a space for karaoke, salsa dancing, etc. depending on the night! I stumbled back to my apartment a time or two from there that summer.

Because it was also a celebration weekend for my parents (34th wedding anniversary) the waitress we had brought the entire table of 7 Cinnamon Toast Crunch shots and then took the boomerang of all of us!

With our tummy’s full we decided to jump in with the rest of the tourists at the M&M and Hershey’s stores right next to our hotel for the sugar fix. Hershey’s store is definitely more affordable than M&Ms (although you can choose your individual colors & flavors) plus they give you a fun size Hershey bar as you walk in the door – Just like at the end of the ride at Hershey Park!

All of our tired butts headed back to the hotel for bed and the final stops Sunday before flights out of town. We went together to Daddio’s Bagel spot for breakfast, Pick-A-Bagel on 8th ave, and with the tiny restaurant so packed, we came back to the Firefighter’s memorial park on 47th ave. We all reminisced on our favorite parts of the weekend and started planning for our next trip together… maybe New Orleans?! 😉 But definitely not in the thick of summer – maybe in the Fall…. October.

A couple of us headed back towards St. Patrick’s Cathedral and took in a piece of Sunday Mass while admiring the artwork inside. I jumped in an uber with the extended family for a ride back to the airport while Mom & Dad called their car for the 4.5 hour drive back to Virginia.

I really lucked out with my flights – not only because they were technically free, but when I arrived back at LaGuardia to head home to Charlotte I didn’t have a seat assignment yet. So I breezed through TSA Pre-Check (totally worth it not to have to remove electronics & shoes) and onto my gate where I was placed in the exit row, window seat.

My little legs were happy for the extended space and I arrived back in the Queen City with NY Bagels in my backpack for the following week.

A great time back in my home away from home – you know that total relaxation feeling you get when you walk in the front door to your home after a long day? That’s how I feel in New York City. While I wouldn’t be able to live there again, I like my space too much, I know where I am and how to get where I want to go when I’m there. The people really aren’t all as rude/mean as you think they are – you can ask anybody down in the subway for Directions and they’re happy to help.

Carriage House Days

Just off the corner of Connecticut and N Streets in Washington, DC is a reasonably imposing red-brick urban mini-mansion, which, a small plaque informs you, once belonged to General Henry Robert, who, you probably don’t know, wrote Robert’s Rules of Order. But back in 1975 when I worked there as a file clerk, we called it “the Carriage House,” because of the large room in the basement which indeed had once been a carriage house.

Like everyone else in the Carriage House, I worked on the “White & Case Case” for the law firm of Arnold & Porter, started in the late forties by two New Deal alumni, Thurman Arnold and Abe Fortas, who were then joined by another New Dealer, Paul Porter. Fortas was appointed to the Supreme Court by his very good friend Lyndon Johnson, who ultimately but inadvertently all but ruined Fortas’ life by seeking to elevate him to Chief Justice, leading to a number of scandals that both prevented Fortas from getting the job and, later, forced him to resign from the Court altogether, which might not have happened if Fortas hadn’t been Jewish, and would have been the nation’s first Jewish Chief Justice.

This was all ancient history by the time my association with the firm—mute, inglorious, and brief—began. Thurman and Abe’s original idea, it seems, was to found an early version of a “boutique” law firm, handling just a few “interesting” cases. Unsurprisingly, that strategy fell by the wayside as Washington boomed. The firm was originally housed in a number of the row houses on N Street, most spectacularly by an impressive mansion on the corner of N and 19th that had been owned by Teddy Roosevelt when he was Assistant Secretary of the Navy during the McKinley Administration. However, by the time I arrived at the Carriage House, most of the senior staff were housed in the I.A.M Building, a Washington, DC sized “skyscraper” on the corner of N and Connecticut, owned by the International Association of Machinists, whose president, William “Wimpy” Wimpisinger, was regarded by some as the most “dangerous” labor leader in America, though if Wimpy ever did anything dangerous, I never heard about it.

Most of the people in the Carriage House were young women, either paralegals or secretaries, which left me doubly the odd man out, or even trebly so, because I was quite possibly the oldest person there—of the regulars, at least—though a fortunately youthful appearance kept my presence and position there from looking as dubious as in fact it was.

I spent most of my time copying and collating documents. The enormous Xerox machines of the time could only copy a single page at a time—no automatic feeds and, of course, no automatic collating. I once spent three days assembling 50 copies of a 300-page document. Occasionally, I would read through transcripts of depositions and circle the names of "important" people whenever they appeared. One of the attorneys at many of these depositions would introduce himself at the start of each session in the following manner: "My name is Bobby Lawyer and I am an attorney."

I lived on Q Street, just a few blocks away from the Carriage House, in an efficiency I rented for $175 a month, furnished largely from what I scavenged from the street. I slept on a $50 mattress and listened to a $1200 stereo, both spread out on the floor. I sat in a worn wicker chair and ate from a worn card table, kept my books in a worn bookcase and my 100-odd jazz albums in a cardboard box.

The young women in the Carriage House who were single would often go to a bar they called “the Airplane”, located nearby on 19th St., but I was far too shy to do that. I would not have wanted to go to a “pick up” bar of any sort, and most certainly would not have wanted to go to a pick up bar frequented by women I knew at work.

However, there was a jazz club located in the basement of the town house right next to the Carriage House, “Harold’s Rogue and Jar”. I never found out what the name meant. I would go there occasionally and sit at the bar without talking to anyone. I would order a bacon cheeseburger with steak fries and a diet Coke. I can’t remember any of the names who appeared at the club, but it was serious jazz—nothing like the terrible “cool jazz” of today. The house drummer was a woman named Dottie Dodgione, who I think was the club manager as well. She was in her fifties, I would guess, with a stiff bouffant hairdo who wore pant suits, and ended each number with a furious solo. Sometimes, despite the jazz, the stress of being around so many people would get to me, and I would take my meal home, wrapped in heavy aluminum foil, and I would sit in my wicker chair and eat my rich bar food in peace and quiet and solitude.

After eight months at Arnold & Porter, I was fired, something anyone with the slightest percipience could have foreseen. Somewhere in Moby Dick Herman Melville warns sea captains not to hire “Platonists”—those with their eyes fixed only on invisible horizons—and he could have offered the same advice to law firms. But my time at the A&P was far from a complete loss. A month before I was fired, I was feeling so flush that I shopped for furniture, at Woodward & Lothrop, then DC’s largest department store. I chose a $400 sleeper sofa, blue and white plaid, a $150 butcher block table, and two Breuer chairs, which I had first seen in an optometrist’s shop and had thought were very classy. I didn’t have a credit card and didn’t know if Woodie’s would take a check, so I paid with $800 in cash, in the form of 16 fifties I had withdrawn from the bank the previous day. It was an investment that, though it might have seemed ill-timed, was in fact very much the reverse. Shortly after being fired, I started dating a young woman who would change my life significantly, a young woman who, I think, would not have dated a man who slept on a mattress on the floor and ate from a card table and a worn wicker chair.

Afterwords The rear windows of the Carriage House faced on the alley behind N Street. A “celebrity” hair dresser, whose name I never learned, parked one of three classic cars that he drove to work each day in that alley—a funereal-looking green and black pre-war Rolls Royce, a post-war Rolls that was cream with red pinstriping, and, surely the pièce de résistance, a midnight-blue coffin-nosed Cord convertible with a tan roof, its chrome supercharger exhaust pipes gleaming in the sun. I wonder how many people would drive such cars in rush-hour traffic today.

The top floor of the IAM building had both offices for Arnold & Porter and the Machinists’ Union. The A&P had lots of attractive, stylish young women who worked as secretaries and receptionists. One of them who sat at the front desk of the top floor told me how difficult it was to keep a straight face when the Machinists’ big shots came swanking in in their horrible 70s-era polyester leisure suits—mint green with white piping and matching white shoes, or what smirky journalists liked to call a “full Cleveland”, white suit, white shirt, and white shoes.

Shortly after I left the A&P, the Carriage House was commandeered by Carolyn Agger, a senior partner and Abe Fortas’ wife. Carolyn, who had been housed in the IAM building, was afraid of elevators, and wanted an office in a building with a nice staircase.

A year or so after I left, Arnold & Porter deserted N Street entirely, building the “Thurmond Arnold Building” at the corner of New Hampshire and M, but they didn’t stay there long. The firm has now merged with a New York law firm, Kaye Scholer, becoming Arnold & Porter Kaye Scholer LLP, with offices all around the world. The DC office is on Massachusetts Avenue, just southeast of Mt. Vernon Square, a stretch of road that constitutes one of several “lobbyist lanes” radiating from the Capitol.

During the McCarthy years, Arnold, Fortas, & Porter defended many people accused of communism. Fortas in particular was a frequent opponent of Joe McCarthy, but the opposition to his appointment as chief justice seemed to come mostly from southern Democrats, who often saw integration as a Jewish/communist plot. When Jesse Helms (R-NC) was elected to the Senate in 1972, one of his goals was to “get” the Jews. He was a furious opponent of Israel until the Reagan years, when it was finally explained to him that you couldn’t make it to the very top in DC unless you learned to play ball with AIPAC.

The White & Case Case involved another law firm, in New York. One of its senior partners, a Mr. Eply, was facing criminal charges brought by the Securities and Exchange Commission, accusing him of criminal behavior based on the advice he gave to a White & Case client, Cortez Randell, a sixties wheeler and dealer who ended up doing time, though, I’m pretty sure, Eply did not. The SEC’s case against Eply was one of first impression, and naturally White & Case was willing to move heaven and earth to protect both Eply and other attorneys who might find themselves in legal peril merely for trying to turn an honest buck or two.

The story of Cortez Randell and his company, National Student Marketing, had been spectacular enough to be the subject of a book, out in paperback while the White & Case Case was still gaining momentum, called The Funny Money Game, by Andrew Tobias, perhaps not the first and certainly not the last up and coming Harvard graduate to make a name for himself by writing a book about his experiences on Wall Street under the tutelage of Mammon.

The way National Student Marketing “worked”—the reason why Cortez Randell got so rich so quickly and then imploded—was that Randell had either discovered or invented “synergy”. This meant buying out firms that provided goods or services complementary to whatever it was NSM was already selling—“better together”, one might say. But the “real” secret was that NSM didn’t buy other companies with money; it used NSM stock instead, which was better than money, because it increased in value every year.

There are lots of things wrong with this model—NSM was going to run out of “complementary” firms to buy, NSM stock was going up because the economy was expanding and all stocks were going up, not because NSM was so fabulous—but the biggest and simplest reason of all is that any financial instrument that can be better than money can also be worse than money, setting a pattern that has repeated itself a number of times since, on a scale far more spectacular than NSM’s. Someone comes up with a brilliant idea, a better mousetrap, and makes a lot of money, and creates a financial instrument based on that idea—be it a simple share of stock, a mortgage-backed security, a collateralized debt obligation, or whatever—that is “better” than money, and a lot of people get rich on that financial instrument. Eventually, however, the better mousetrap, whatever it is, stops being better, and becomes the new normal. It’s lost its edge. But the people who have gotten rich off their “better than money” gimmick can’t believe that, or won’t believe that. The line that went around among the Wall Street geniuses who almost sank the world’s economy back in 2008 was that you don’t stop playing “Musical Chairs” until the music stops, even if you see the chairs disappearing. However, when the music had stopped, they started singing—and telling lies—until there were no chairs left, leaving the government to pay for all the furniture they’d destroyed.

The Spread of Mangroves in Senegal

Many of Senegal’s largest rivers are flanked by corridors of green and interlaced with networks of sinuous creeks and streams. These lush green areas are havens for mangroves—short, shrubby trees with waxy leaves and tangles of finger-like roots that rise from shallow tidal areas.

The blend of land, water, and wood that define Senegal’s mangrove forests are not just beautiful; they are important. Mangroves store large amounts of carbon. Studies have shown that mangrove forests sequester at least two to four times more carbon than other tropical forests. They also provide breeding grounds and nurseries for fish, prevent erosion during tropical cyclones, and help cleanse waters of pollutants.

While scientists estimate that Earth lost at least 35 percent of global mangrove habitat between 1980 and 2000 (often due to aquaculture and other coastal development), there are signs that these ecosystems are surviving and even retaking lost ground in some areas. For instance, Senegal’s mangroves have experienced significant regeneration and expansion since 2000, according to a satellite-based analysis by NASA scientists Lola Fatoyinbo and David Lagomasino. Over the 16-year period, the scientists measured an expansion totaling 48 square kilometers (19 square miles), or 2 percent. They observed regeneration across 148 square kilometers (57 square miles), an increase of 6 percent.

This regrowth after decades of loss likely had several causes, the scientists say. A prolonged and damaging drought in the 1970s and 1980s killed many of Senegal’s mangroves; the water became too salty when the freshwater flow from rivers dwindled. The easing of that drought allowed mangroves to recolonize many areas. Meanwhile, the normal deposition of sediment along river edges has created new shallow areas that mangroves have been able to colonize.

Senegal has established parks and used other conservation measures to protect some mangroves from being damaged or cleared. Several non-governmental organizations and environmental groups also launched mangrove-planting projects. The Saloum and Casamance deltas, in particular, have been a focus of “blue carbon” restoration efforts, with one organization reporting that it planted more than 79 million trees in the two deltas.

The map above shows how mangrove forests along the Cassamance River changed between 2000 and 2016. The analysis is based on Landsat satellite observations of the “greenness” of vegetation, or the Normalized Difference Vegetation Index(NDVI). Areas marked as gain (teal) had no mangroves in 2000 but measurable growth by 2016. Areas marked as having regenerated (green) had mangroves in 2000 that became significantly greener and denser by 2016. The natural-color image below was acquired by the Operational Land Imager (OLI) on Landsat 8 on March 5, 2018.

“For decades, there has been so much negative news about losing mangroves that it is easy to forget that these are plants that are almost perfectly designed to trap sediment and colonize empty mudflats,” said Fatoyinbo. “The regeneration of mangrove ecosystems is something we are actually seeing in several parts of the world now.”

Editor’s Note: March 21 is the International Day of Forests, a day established by resolution of the United Nations General Assembly to celebrate and raise awareness of the importance of all types of forests. Fatoyinbo and Lagomasino conducted their analysis in support of a partnership between NASA and the United Nations to track progress toward achieving Sustainable Development Goals. Several NASA initiatives are underway to demonstrate how satellite data can be used to help countries monitor progress towards a number of these goals.
