P.S. This was the result of a HIMARS strike. It is a very expensive loss for Russian army! By the 503rd day of the war, the Russian orc army had already lost 414 air-defense systems in Ukraine.

Footage shows first confirmed destruction of HIMARS MLRS in Ukraine

The US-made M142 HIMARS multiple launch rocket systems (MLRS), the destruction footage of which appeared on 5 March, was hit near Nikanorovka by an Iskander air-launched ballistic missile, according to Russian media.

The Armed Forces of Ukraine (AFU) have reportedly moved the limited number of Western-made MLRSs closer to the front line, this time deploying HIMARS less than 40 km from the combat area.

Military experts note that such rocket systems have been increasingly used as long-range artillery to hold back an offensive. The Russian strikes come at a time when the HIMARS are preparing to fire and are not expecting an attack.

According to open sources, Kyiv received 20 M142 HIMARS MLRS and 15 M270 MLRS as part of military aid. Currently, it is reported that three HIMARS have been targeted.

Experts consider the destruction of Western equipment taking place in Ukraine as an anti-advertisement of the Western military and industrial complex. Furthermore, the shares of the US military company General Dynamics fell in value amid the destruction of the third Abrams tank in the combat zone near Avdiivka, Ukraine.

🇺🇲🇺🇦 It is now being reported that the US will in fact be sending ATACMS missiles to Ukraine

NBC News is reporting that a "small number" of ATACMS long-range missiles for the M142 HIMARS. ATACMS has an operational range of up to 300km (190mi), significantly longer range than the standard HIMARS munitions which typically have a range of up to 80km (50mi).

Ukrainian Spy-chief Kirill Budanov, head of the Main Intelligence Directorate (GUR) responded to the news that the US would be sending a small amount of ATACMS by saying:

"if it's 100 missiles, this won't change the situation"

The White House is still refusing to comment on the supposed weapons transfer, even as Zelensky was visiting Washington and the Biden Administration announced a new $325 million aid package to Ukraine.

"We are discussing all the different types of weapons and artillery, artillery shells with the caliber of 155mm, then air defense systems." Zelensky told an interpreter during his visit to Canada.

"We have a comprehensive discussion and work with the United States at different levels."

The Russian attack on Ukraine and the too slow arrival of Western aid show that it is essential for Eastern European countries to develop their own national military industry capable of producing advanced long-range weapons systems(..) as well as much closer military-industrial cooperation between the countries of the region should be developed by purchasing weapons produced here by local companies(..)

How much of a weapon system's range is related to the rocket, vs the rocket launcher? Apparently we've been modifying the launchers we send to Ukraine in order to keep them from hitting Russia. I would have thought it would have been the missile itself, rather than the launcher.

I admit I know very, very little.

If you're referring to this article regarding the M142 HIMARS launcher, the projectile is the primary determinant for range. Based on what I know about the M142 and the ATACMS missile system, it appears that the launcher was configured to not be able to fire the 610mm ATACMS, only the shorter range 227mm GMLRS missiles. So it is the missile that determines the range, but if you modify the launcher to only be able to fire the shorter range missiles, then you de facto limit the range of the weapon.
