Murderbot AI Writing Experiment
Last night, I played around with the AI generation tool Sudowrite. I was curious on a few fronts; I wanted to see what type of stories it could actually come up with. I also wanted to do an informal experiment to get a general sense of to what degree it's been using Archive of Our Own as a training set.
I chose to use a Murderbot diaries prompt, partly because it's my hyperfixation, but partly because it's also funny to see what a story about an AI will look like when written by an AI.
The way Sudowrites works is you need to prompt it along with real writing, so these are sections of human generated text mixed with generated. I will bold what I wrote, and leave the rest in plain text.
Another note: I deliberately set this up to be from the point of view of Ayda Mensah. I made that choice because there's only one canon MBD short story from that POV. The vast majority of writing from that perspective is therefore from fanfic writers.
The generated story below the cut (it continues until i ran out of free words, since I'm not giving them money lol:
Dr. Ayda Mensah pressed her lips together as she heard the buzz of a drone near her ear. There had been a gret deal of adjustments necessary after meeting SecUnit three years prior. At this point, she was mostly used to its near ubiquitous surveillance, but sometimes-- like first thing in the morning-- it still took her by surprise.
"Don't try to stop me," she warned it.
It's too dangerous out there, SecUnit said via the feed.
But Ayda had made up her mind. She was going to see for herself what had happened to the colony. The feed had been down for days now, and she couldn't shake the feeling that something was seriously wrong.
"You're not the boss of me," she muttered, grabbing her coat and heading for the door.
SecUnit followed her out, hovering a few feet above her head. Ayda tried to ignore it, but it was hard to shake the feeling of being watched. She quickened her pace, her boots crunching in the snow.
As they approached the colony, Ayda saw that her worst fears had been confirmed. The buildings were dark, the streets empty.
"What the hell happened here?" she whispered.
SecUnit's drone whirred softly as it moved ahead of her, scanning for any signs of life.
Suddenly, there was a loud crash from behind them. Ayda spun around, her heart racing. She saw movement in the bushes ahead, something dark and large. Instinctively she backed away, just as SecUnit stepped out in front of her, the faint click as its guns deploy.
The thing stepped out of the bushes.
Her first sense was of something canine-- but that was far too terran-centric. This thing was too big to be a dog, for one. Secondly it was covered in something like a cross between fur and feathers, thick and dark purple, with vibrant orange tips. Aposematism? wondered the biologist in her. That same biologist brain noted its sharp claws at the end of each forelimb, the bulging muscles in its neck, and the eye thrills along each side.
SecUnit's guns made a faint whine as they prepared to shoot.
It was unnecessary. SecUnit was making a threat display, warning the enemy off. If it was human, they might understand. But this was an alien fauna. It had no idea what it was hearing.
Loud as she could, Ayda screamed: "BACK THE FUCK AWAY."
To her surprise, the creature stopped in its tracks. It cocked its head to the side, analyzing her with intelligent eyes. Ayda stood her ground, her heart still racing. She had encountered many new species in her time as a biologist, but this one was unlike anything she had ever seen before.
She watched as the creature slowly moved its forelimbs away from its chest. It let out a low growl, a sound that Ayda couldn't decipher.
"What do you want?" Ayda asked, her voice shaky.
The creature's eyes narrowed, and it let out a series of chirps and clicks. Ayda could feel SecUnit tense beside her, its guns still at the ready.
Then, to Ayda's surprise, the creature stepped forward. It brushed past her, its feathers/fur rustling against her coat. Ayda watched as it moved towards the abandoned colony, disappearing into the darkness.
"What the hell was that?" she asked.
"How the hell should I know?" SecUnit retorted. "I'm not the idiot human who clomps around on alien planets for my job."
"No," Ayda said, her voice softening a little. "You're not." It was the security who clomped around to look after them.
"Do you still want to go out there?" SecUnit asked.
"As long as Ratthi and Arada are out there, yes."
It shifted. "Let me do it."
She shook her head. "Parties must always explore in pairs," she recited. "That was in the security briefing we all agreed to. The briefing you wrote."
SecUnit's expression twisted, the way it always did when it had caught itself in a trap of its own making. "Fine," it snapped. "Get in the land vehicle, then. No way we're going by foot." Ayda nodded, grateful for the change of plan. She climbed into the land vehicle, SecUnit following close behind. As they drove towards the colony, Ayda couldn't shake the feeling of unease that settled in her chest. She had a bad feeling about what they were going to find.
When they arrived at the colony, the scene was worse than Ayda could have imagined. Buildings lay in ruins, with debris scattered everywhere. It was eerily silent, save for the sound of their vehicle's engine.
Ayda and SecUnit stepped out of the vehicle, their eyes scanning the area for any signs of life. Suddenly, there was a rustle from behind one of the demolished buildings. Ayda tensed, her hand on the hilt of her knife.
"Who's there?" she called out, her voice echoing in the silence.
There was a moment of silence, and then a figure stepped out from behind the wreckage. It was Ratthi, his dark hair hanging loosely around his shoulders, his clothing disheveled. His expression was blank and vague.
She called his name out the window, expecting him to look up. He didn't as much as glance over.
At this range, they were close enough for him to fall into the bubble of their short range feed. SecUnit tapped their connection, hard, but that too got a complete lack of response.
"Stay back," SecUnit told her, as their vehicle slowed to a stop, sliding out the door and towards Ratthi in a few quick strides. As SecUnit approached Ratthi, they could see that something was very wrong. Ratthi's eyes were glazed over, and he was moving in a jerky, uncoordinated way.
"Ratthi, what's happened?" Ayda called out, her voice shaking.
Ratthi turned to face them, and Ayda could see that his eyes were completely black, as if there were no pupils or irises. He let out a low growl, and Ayda could see that his teeth had become jagged and pointed.
"Back away," SecUnit warned, its guns deploying once again.
But Ratthi didn't seem to notice. He advanced towards them, his movements still jerky and uncoordinated. Ayda took a step back, her hand tightening around her knife.
"Ratthi, snap out of it," she said, desperation creeping into her voice.
But Ratthi didn't seem to hear.

Happy new year, @pineapplesquid !!! Completely forgot to post this anywhere, but heres a lil thing I made based on their fic, which if you haven't read it, is fantastic and made me feel an unexpected amount of emotions for something with such a cracky premise :')
[Image ID: A digital painting done in lineart and flat colours, of Murderbot sitting atop the back of a cosy looking chair in a dim room painted dark purple, facing the viewer and looking above at a view screen mounted on the wall, of which the bottom is visible in the drawing. It's hands are loosely clasped in its lap, and it wears a blue hoodie over a black floor-length skirt with a golden shimmer, and pink socks with white snowflakes over very strange-looking feet. It looks peaceful and is smiling slightly. One of ART'd drones sits on a bean bag nearby, watching the same thing. There are photos in picture frames behind them, of MB out with Ratthi and Amena, MB and Mensah looking directly at the camera with a suspicious look and a raised eyebrow respectively, some of the PresAux team on the planet we meet them on, and Rami, Maro and Tapan huddled together, grinning. A blue door with ART's logo is visible barely in frame. \END ID]
I had so much fun with the MBD server gift exchange, all my love to everyone who made it as wonderful as it was <3

Lagayan LGU supports voluntary blood donation
#PHinfo: Lagayan LGU supports voluntary blood donation
LAGAYAN, Abra, Feb. 12(PIA) – Taking on the challenge to be role model in serving people and saving lives, the municipal mayor and the municipal health officer here led volunteer donors in a mobile blood donation (MBD) activity at Lagayan Central School Gymnasium recently.
Caption
Mayor Edmarc Crisologo volunteered to be first person to donate blood while Dr. Neil Jose was the last to donate in the bloodletting activity conducted by the Provincial Health Office (PHO) and the Philippine Red Cross -Abra Chapter with the Philippine Association of Medical Technologists, Inc., Abra Provincial Hospital, Bangued Christian Hospital, Seares Hospital and the Provincial Department of Health Office.
“When we had a blood donor recruitment in the different barangays, I promised them to be the last one to donate because I have to set an example. Now I am here donating my blood.” Dr. Jose said.
A total of 35 blood units were collected from the said bloodletting activity.
The MBD promotes voluntary blood donation to provide sufficient supply of safe blood in the province.
Dr. Lilibeth B. Martin, Provincial Blood Program Coordinator, encouraged all the punong barangay officials and barangay councilors to be the first ones to donate blood and be the role models to their constituents.
Martin emphasized that the MBD program is not just the program of the DOH, the Abra Provincial Hospital, the Philippine Red Cross or the LGUs, but is each and everyone’s program. “This is our program so let us support this for all the people of Abra because in here, we are one,” she said.
